Sincerely, I am starting to think the Q9450/X3350 processors like my favorite mATX board.
Edit: Or actually... since it's a brand new board and a brand new processor, I conclude that the FSB wall on these chips are due to the design of the motherboard... or maybe older chipsets just cannot handle the chip as well. Now I'm really interested in seeing how a QX9650 would clock on a G35 board...

Anyway I am expecting a Q9450 OEM start of this week and see by myself what the Rampage with water cooling can give for quad-cores.
But from reading a lot of boards and tests my understanding is you can get a safe overclock (no voltage over Intel's suggested maximum, no 70°c+) with good cooling like that for the quad 45nm:
Q9300 -> 3.4Ghz
Q9450 -> 3.6Ghz
Q9550 -> 3.8Ghz
QX9650 -> 4Ghz
And if you are lucky (about everything counts: proc-mobo-ram-psu liking each other), you can get up to +200Mhz with a safe voltage/temp.
that's a nice cpu but the price is pretty high for a dual core?
man the highest I could pull with this p5e3 dlx is 490fsb.
heres some pics from last night. the pic of me in the turbo nerd glasses is actually posted at 500fsb but you can see by my sarcastic gesture it froze right at the windows splash screen. :(

You mean the strap? I keep it on auto and rather define the memory speed directly below, in this case somewhere around 900MHz so I can be sure it's not a problem (it's a Micron D9xx G.Skill set, RMA replacement of a same set which did 1166MHZ @ ~2.3V).Quote:

3.80GHz and 3.90GHz was child's play for this board... and I suspect that with some better chipset cooling... and some modifications (or a very stable stable PSU), you can get 4GHz quite easily, too.

Yeah... settings as stated above. Actually, give vPLL 1.60v and vFSB (VTT) 1.36v so that you have some room for voltage drops or something. Of course, with a tier 1 PSU, that won't happen (at all?) but I was using a tier 3 PSU. :p:
And... unfortunately, 4GHz still requires 1.422v on both chips. Only 1.38v is needed to boot into Windows, though.
And... since I'm using a Raidmax PSU, the system won't stay stable at any other settings than stock. My 5v line with this PSU is always undervolted.
But it's bootable up to 512 FSB FYI. I'll plug an external graphics adapter in right now... and see how much more I can get. :D
Was able to post and get into XP at 480 x 8 - but it cannot run benchmarks.
3DMark06 will begin to load at startup but stops and only appears as a Ghost Screen. Very Transparent.
475 x 8 was able to run CPU Test on 3Dmark06 and got 6250 as a CPU Score.

T2K That is why I sold my Maximus for a Rampage. It got me another 20 CPU FSB Increase.
My Maximus Formula could Only do 440-445 x 8. It was a NO GO at 450 x 8.

Hmm... after some measures, I've found that the true vNB required for 4GHz is... actually real 1.732v - 1.742v. A northbridge voltage mod for ASUS P5E-VM HDMI is possible... but seems like we'll be dealing with adding resistors instead of pencils... oh well. :p: But my current board already has a +0.018v measure on the northbridge volt by default... so setting 1.71v in the BIOS gave me 1.732v real... barely enough for 4GHz... and that explains why I was able to get 4GHz to go more stable on this new board. :) More reports to come in later!
I believe my Tier 1 Corsair 750W PSU is limiting me in running both my CPU and VGA with Massive Overclocks.
As i can run my X3350 at 480x8 it will not run 3DMark06 when I OC the 8800GTS at 805/2250/2010 (a 25% OC).
With out OCing the VGA it will run the 3DMark06 CPU Test. See below.

I would be VERY surprised if it was your PSU holding you back. To find out if it is or not, get a cheap digital multi-meter and put the probes into a molex plug (preferably +12v and ground) while running 3DM06. If you see a big voltage drop just before it crashes (eg if the voltage drops to like 11.0v or lower), then it's your PSU, otherwise, it's most likely instability elsewhere.
