I seem to be having the same issue as you FrOzE. I've got a 0922APMW as well, and simply can't get the system stable. It hard locks as soon as I Prime95 load it. Reducing the clock down to 2.6GHz and lower didn't seem to help either. Neither did higher vcore. I can only assume that this is a BIOS bug of some sort. I haven't been able to find any examples of BE 550 owners unlock successfully (with stability) on the GD70.
I'm using 1.4b3 right now, which seems like a good BIOS with the exception of the stability issues. It seems that just about everyone is able to get these 0922APMW chips stable on gigabyte and DFI boards. Most are overclocking well up to 3.8+ GHz as well. I'm hoping that either the retail 1.4 BIOS or perhaps a new beta will solve this issue. Too bad I don't have another board to test with to confirm that my chip is good.
EDIT: Has anyone confirmed that 1.4b6 still has issues with stable 550 unlocking? I havent tried that latest one yet. MSI mentioned "Fixed BTS error" but I'm not sure if that is related at all.
Sometime i feel that it's the GD70 that having the problem :P
Bro, the only good bios for me at the moment is 1.3 or 1.4b3.
I am currently running on 1.4b6 but I am not going to play with unlocking 4 cores on my X3 720 till MSI releases a much better bios.
I know my X3 720 can definately unlock as it was running for a couple of months with 4 cores o/c to 3.2ghz at 1.37v with no issues on another mobo before I switched to the GD70.
So just wait for MSI to fix the bios. I think they messed up something in there which is why we havent received a new beta bios for the longest time since they released a slew of 1.4 betas over a fortnight.
I am wanting to pull the trigger in this board Friday.
I have 2 questions, which ram is everyone using? I wanted to use the Mushin, because its blue :)
Or this OCZ because I have had some hellishly good luck with OCZ, the volts are low, and the timings are good.
My other question is really a concern. It seems the number one rip on this board is people can't buy a dual core or tri core processor and get a free quad core phenom II out of the deal.
I understood that if you wanted a quad core, you bought a quad core, and if you got a dual/tri core, and you could unlock the 4th core, good news for you, but its not supported, or even advised. Why is a mother board being talked bad about because people can't get something for nothing out of it.
If all dual dual cores and tri cores where meant to be unlockable to be a quad core, shouldn't that be a feature? Since they are not, why are people talking bad about a motherboard because it can't unlock cores on a processor that where supposed to be disabled?
Is this the only issue with this board?
I don't see it as an issue. It's a shame that MSI hasn't been able to get a working bios out that unlocks while their competitors have, but it's not a knock on the board. I'm using some g.skill pi 1333 sticks because they were on sale when I bought them, but overall any good quality sticks that have decent timings should be fine unless you're benching.
Hello people I have 2 questions.
1. Will this board start with Phenom X2 II 550 without updating bios ??
2. Does anyone use on this board OCZ Platinum DDR3 2x2GB 1600 MHz CL 7.0 [OCZ3P1600EB4GK] ??
Thanks for answer...
Hi everyone, as you can see, this is my 1st Post.:)
I just bought this mobo recently and believe it or not, have read through this WHOLE thread! Why? Well I got quite a bit of general PC experience and am a PC Tech actually, but have no overclocking knowledge whatsoever.
I'm looking to overclock the CPU about 20% (3.84GHz) but if it proves too hard, I may fall back to, what seems to be for most, a pre-voltage tinker clock of about 3.6GHz. Hoping to keep Cool'n'Quiet on too, during overclock.
(I hope I'm not veering things OT, if so, please at least redirect me, but I think this all applies to this motherboard.)
So here's some questions:
- Is overclocking memory necessary, because I bought A-DATA DDR3-1333 RAM that I don't think is very overclockable at all & :smoke: is not an option for me.(Answered by shadow_419=post #819)
- I noticed SNiiPE_DoGG bought the OCZ Platinum AMD Edition, which is lower voltage wise compared to the OCZ Platinum Enhanced Bandwidth Edition I've had my eye on (extended RAM heatsinks are not an option for me). The AMD edition says it's meant solely for AM3, which is hard to sell later, so my question is, is the higher 1.9v vs 1.65v bad for the Phenom II? (Answered by TurboDiv=post #816)
I was thinking of getting the 1.9v and trying to dail down the voltage as best I can. Does that sound ok?- What is the benefit of NB overclock, is it speed gain, stability or to enhance the ability to overclock the CPU and/or RAM?(Answered by shadow_419=post #819)
- Lastly, does overclocking decrease the lifespan of components? If so, it is significantly so? (obviously I don't mean Xtreme overclocking, just a 24/7 OC)
I'd also like to get maximum life out of the equipment, hence my modest overclock ambitions.(Answered by shadow_419=post #819)
I hope I get some responses, looks like I got to this thread quite late when most have moved on.:(
@xplosiv: I saw online, that the OCZ3P1600EB4GK RAM is successfully used with this board. It's the same one I'm eager to get. Note the EB is for Enhanced Bandwidth.
Also, the 1.3 BIOS supports the 550, and the boards currently being sold should already have it, so I think that's another yes.
@Slave1974: I'd recommend u get the same Enhanced Bandwidth OCZ as I was talking about in my 2nd question and xplosiv is asking about.
Well if you're shopping @ Newegg, there's almost no doubt its 1.3.
I definitely do think the RAM is good, and wish I could get it immediately. It also looks like OCZ gives good support and is willing to exchange anything faulty. It's just a matter of manually setting the timings, freq and voltage to match what OCZ has given as the RAM's default.:yepp:
My GD70 started without an issue on the retail 1.0 BIOS release. It identified it as "AMD Processor Model Unknown" but worked perfectly fine. Flashing to a more recent revision corrects that.
I'm running this OCZ kit, which is playing very well with the 550 and GD70: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227381 . I'm only using two of the three sticks though.
http://www.ocztechnology.com/product...um_amd_edition this is 2 modules
http://www.ocztechnology.com/product...triple_channel this is 3 modules so keep 1 spare
http://www.ocztechnology.com/product...triple_channel this is 3 modules so keep 1 spare
notice there is a cl6 kit in there for 1600, this may need cas7 on AMD platforms...but 7-6-6- is still fast. All kits need 1.65V or less
froogle search for Animal, remember these 1333's are really 1866 with a different sticker/part number.
http://www.google.com/products?q=OCZ3P1333LVA6GK&aq=f
@Tony: are u saying it's better to go for a 1.65v and avoid 1.9? If so, why?
Guys, pleased help out with post #808 :)
Not a problem. I don't have any experience with "EB" kits on Phenom systems, but if you are most interested in stability, I'd stick with one of the OCZ kits Tony listed above instead. They definitely play well on Phenom II systems. I can personally attest to the Platinum 12800 "LV" or "Low Voltage" kit working well on the GD70. They should have a decent amount of overclocking/timing headroom as well if you ever decide to start pushing it.
The "Animals" kit he linked is definitely the best bang for the buck and is an excellent clocker too.
Thanks TurboDiv. If they're recommended I guess they should be good.:rocker:
After reading through this thread, I saw that even 2v is possible, but just wanted to confirm that the higher voltage doesn't stress the CPU's memory controller and eat away lifespan.
Any word on any other of my questions?
1) Overclocking memory is not required. All you need is ram that will run stable at whatever frequency and timings it's rated for.
2) Answered
3) NB frequency is tied to your L3 cache. The faster your cpu-nb the faster your L3 cache is running. Performance is the reason to overclock this.
4) Overclocking by itself does not decrease the lifetime of the cpu or motherboard. The heat generated if not dissipated properly is what degrades the components and leads to decreased lifetime. I have an opteron 165 running at 2.8ghz(1.8ghz stock) for 3 1/2 years never a single problem. I have a Athlon XP 2500+ that I ran at 2.3ghz for 6 years 24/7. I finally semi-retired that old bad boy. Take a rest good buddy you've served me well. lol
Thanks shadow_419, you rock.
Well in that case, I'll be pushing the rig quite a bit harder and look forward to reaching your guy's ranks.
No problem, I help with what I can. Just watch your temps and add voltage when absolutely necessary. The 955 don't need huge amounts of voltage usually to get up in the 3.8-3.9ghz range but they do need to be kept cool.
Without a doubt get the AMD Edition OCZ I talked about in the 2nd question on post #808, I just got the confirmation here:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=223668
that it's universally supported (not just on AMD platforms), it's just called AMD Ed. because it's dual channel, as opposed to the i7's triple, and it handles the best for the price +it's low voltage +it's "animal" series +it's very overclockable and stable as said by chew* and other Xtreme overclockers.
There's a problem with stability using the available betas with unlocking. My x2 550 unlocks, but it hard locks with any ram intensive stress testing (p95 blend, large fft, ect.) There's a promise of a fixed bios soon so we'll just have to be patient.
This is true it could be the cpu, but just about everyone that's posted x2 550 unlocked has the same problem with this board. Some of the posters in the x2 550 thread even showed the same chip unlocked on other boards running fine.
Anybody running 8GB of those Ballistix Tracer DDR3 PC3-10600 on their gd70?
Got mines yesterday and would like to get a rough idea of what to expect when i'll get a gd70 next week when i return from that rock festival week-end.
If you can not find the animals then look for the 1600 AMD edition, same IC type just slightly different BIN...they do pretty much the same clocks.
I am trying to come up with a 6-6-6-24 1600 kit not using Hypers, it may have to go to 7-6-6-24 though but they will feature Blade HS and be branded for AMD use.
more soon
For anyone still having issues with 550 unlock stability, check out the new 1.51 BIOS posted by Toppc in this thread.
I haven't tried it yet, but may give it a go tonight..
EDIT: Works great :)
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...1&d=1247870515
Finally my 4th core from my X3 720BE is now stable..!!
Kudos to the person who made the 1.51B BIOS!!!
Now gonna see how far this chip can go...
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...4/Untitled.jpg
Three hours blend stable at stock clocks and volts. Next up how low can she go.
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8049/x4b50test2.jpg
have any of the new BIOSes released fixed OC stability? I'm on 1.3 and I'm back at stock speeds because of random BSODs that I couldn't trace down to anything  :(
I've never had any overclock instability with 1.3 or the 1.4betas. I haven't tried any over clocking with this bios yet but I'll report back.
Just got the gd70 and the 720 unlocks with the new 1.51b bios...am now at stock...and have the OCZ 1600 kit...any help to OC would be great.
Ok am unable to boot with anything over 1066 on the ram...any help????
EDIT: now its at 1333, but with very low timings....someone please help..I have installed the ram in slots closest to the cpu.
9 hours blend completed :hehe:

Leave your HTLink and NB Frequency at auto (HT1600/NB2000) for now and give it a shot.
Seems some people are having issues with HTLink pushed to 2000 on this bios. Wont boot and stuck at FF. I had the same issues running the new bios off the bat with my usual settings and its currently fine with HT1600/NB2000 with 4 cores overclocked to 3.4ghz on my 720BE on low speed air.
I will start to tweak settings one by one to isolate the issue.
Thanks...did just that and am able to now boot and run prime at 1333 Mhz 6-6-6. Seems to be stable. Now to the next level...anyway what do u use to check temps with the cores unlocked?? Am not able to get a temp reading out of any program..
mav2000, try increasing the cpu-nb vid to at least 1.25v
Ok will try that and report back...
Hey guys,
Just grabbed myself one of these boards and a phenom X4 955 to play around with and had a quick question - hopefully not too noobish, but ive been trying to clear it up in my head before i push voltages etc.
What is the difference between CPU VDDC and CPU VID? Now im guessing that CPU VID is just vcore, not so clear on VDDC. Now, I noticed VDDC in overdrive, but in the bios does this relate to CPU VDD? I just ask because after increasing CPU-VID in bios a couple of notches, overdrive reads it as CPU VDDC increasing, where as everest reads it as vcore increasing.
Alternatively if anyone can link me to some good voltage/bios guides on this board i'd be more than happy to do a bit of reading! :)
cpu vddc is an offset applied to cpu vid, default setting is cpu vddc = cpu vid but you can change that in bios (it's called cpu voltage)
Ok upped the voltage on cpu nb to 1.25 loads and gets to the windows start and bsods. Any help, going higher to 1.26 on cpu nb does not help. Do I need to go lower?
Thanks mate,
just to make sure, am i right in thinking that the CPU vddc and CPU VID are one and the same voltage? (i.e equivelent to vcore) Its just u are effectively adjusting the CPU VID which then u offset +/- voltage via vddc? hope that makes sense.
Is this the same with the CPU-NB VDD and CPU-NB VID?
try increasing it one step a time, anything below 1.425v is considered safe
cpu vddc = cpu vid + offset
By default the offset is zero, that's why their values match.
yep, it's the same with cpu-nbQuote:
Is this the same with the CPU-NB VDD and CPU-NB VID?
Ok, will try higher then, thanks. By the eay as far as vddc is concerned why do they have this extra setting? Is it oc over 1.55?
EDIT: went all the way to 1.35 but no go....let me try with 3 cores to see if thats the issue.
EDIT: Nope it has nothing to do with unlocked cores...so its something else...I am using 7-7-7-24-30 as settings and am keeping the ram at 1.66, still no luck...I am sure I am missing something but dont know what..
By the way this current bios seems to have a HT and NB OC problem. Is there a btter bios which support OC of these two as well as an unlock?
clocks good 4 me lol

Well looks like its an issue with 720BE's then, or am I missing something as usual. Those are some super clocks btw. Cheers.
Hmph... they didn't even release the official 1.4 before going to 1.51b!:para:
Thats because 1.4 is a mess and doesnt do what it actually was made to do. Unlocking core feature. Might as well not include it if you're not gonna implement it properly. At least MSI seems to be working hard on it.
If you're just doing normal overclocking, even 1.3 is fine.
Awesome clocks, msimax
I've been getting FF post code errors when cold booting from the 1.5b1. Glad to see I'm not alone. Going to try to reduce the HTT clock and increase the NB volts and report back.
Any help for the ram clocking please.
Are you with 1.5B1 ? Report back when u switch it. Im also thinking about it, but for now im pretty stable at 3720 mhz with my 955 so i doubt ill be getting any higher with this bios...
@msimax, thats a killer clock, is it better than with 1.3 bios ? What voltage are you running those memories at( nvm i saw it - 2.25v) ? What is your CPU-NB at 3000 mhz NB ?
normally i get ff when i pushed to far but does it cycle about 4 times for you then reset. if not pushing reset usally helps me bring it back. also i have a 214htt booting limit could be my vid card but to counter this i select the option to limit my oc till im in windows basically delays it, so if i have a known good oc i just use that option. might just be my board since it was declared legaly dead 3 times:rofl: any thing i get out of it is a bonus:up:
nb is 1.465 but imma try lower tonite when i try cas 9 clocking:up:
NB is at 1.465, what about CPU-NB ? :)
thats what i meant
SO do you think a higher NB V would be required to run ram at 1,600 Mhz. Anyone running 1600 and whats ure nB v??
NB V 1.3, CPU-NB 1.3

I FINALLY GOT MY ACTIVATION EMAIL! i registered here like 2 months ago and jsut now got the activation
thank god
anyhow ive been following this thread since it started, lotta good info in here
ive got the gd70 board as well.....720be stuck in it
2700nb speeds, cpu running at 3,716 etc etc
but what ive been dying to ask, is with all these bios releases, when i try to unlock the 4th core upon reboot after enabling acc and special ec the motherboard hangs with FF on the led
i know this chip unlocks ive done it on a gigabyte board, and its from the 0904 batch also
anyone know why this happens on the msi boards?
im using the 1.5b1 bios right now and i actually was given a guest account from msi to their ftp server for 48 hour access because they created a custom bios for me to enable this feature, this was like a month or so ago when they made the custom for me....it didnt work either, always hangs at FF. ive tried since version 1.4 and used all the betas. same thing
wonder what it could be?
are u setting it to special and acc +2 thats what i had to do
and first set optimized defaults then try to unlock it
I tried playing with acc and found out that FF only occurs with acc on auto. On any other setting after a couple of reboots the unlocked core silently disappears, the cpu simply reverts back to X3 and from that point switching EC mode is useless - only thing that helps is the good old cmos clear.
hello all it been awhile since i posted about this board it was wondering if you guys that tested the bios out for this board
what one do you suggest as i have the 1.B6 bios
Thanks Roger
1.51B^^^
Ok so looks like the goofup I made was not to increase NB. i only increased CPU NB. Lets see how it goes, will try once I am home...thanks and will keep you guys posted.
EDIT: seems like the issue is vista. It boots up and all that, without any issue, specially when using the FSB to get it to 1600, then vista decides that there has been a change in hardware and therefore I need to repair it. the moment I go to repair, instead of the normal screen that comes up, it says windows repair (ems) and then after loading most of the files bluescreens. So tried to repair using 1333 and it works differently, as soon as I ask it to boot from CD it goes straight into the loading file screen, whereas with 1600 it asks for windows EMS or something....so what can I do about this, other than a fresh install. I could probably fresh install it on the other drive and try but thats another story.
BTW this is what the cpuz screenie shows...nothing at all on 1600 speeds and showing 533 as max bandwith..
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/549/memorym.jpg
Beyond what beta said above, have you confirmed that your CPU is indeed unlockable in another board, Bioshock? Its possible that your specific CPU isn't unlockable.
Stable at lower voltage than stock x2 550 vid of 1.35 :ROTF: This is 1.325v idle vdroop 0.005
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/8138/x4b50test4.jpg
ive even tried it on all stock settings with the voltages raised
yes i have unlocked it on a gigabyte board
heres some screens of my bios settings, id actually like some help regarding overclocking more than unlocking the 4th core because it seems like msis bios is too buggy for now to even bother with it
but id like to get my system to push out each ounce of performance as possible
NOTICE: i do have the multiplier dropped one notch to run at 3618 right now, i usually keep it at 3718 but it seems my cpu voltage is a bit high compared to what other people report settings theres to to achieve the same overclock
so what can i tweak to get this thing running at its max, one thing is my ram, this crap WONT overclock beyond 1608. its 1600 stock btw ocz flex ex series 7-6-6-24 timings
heres a pic and link to the modules on ocz website:
http://www.ocztechnology.com/images/...ex_angle_b.jpg
http://www.ocztechnology.com/product...ndwidth_series
you will notice in my voltages pic below i have the ram running @ 1.85 volts, itll do 1600 at 1.8v too, but i just keep it at 1.85, but even at 1.95 it wont overclock and be stable above 1608..................the blue screens im getting im almost positive are related to my ram overheating. these things get so hot you cant even touch them for a split second while playing games or benching and ill just get random blue screens ...and it only happens during gaming or benching. but my cpu is prime stable on cpu only tests even at 3718 with the settings you see in the bios pics below. but id like to figure out how to run this thing with lower voltages to the cpu,, possibly by raising the cpu-pll or other settings im not too in touch with at the moment. so some help form you guys would be much appreciated.
720be cpu btw
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/c...s-settings.jpg
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/c...bios-volts.jpg
edit: i forgot to mention, regarding ACC.............even with EC set to normal, if i enable ACC i get FF on boot. i know this is a bug in the bios because the early revisions (specifically 1.3 final i recall) didnt do that
I guess you can't fault ocz as they run rated speed and timings, but you can't go over 1608 even with looser timings 8-8-8-24?
Hey there guys, just to let you know, CPU-Z 1.52 is out.
Here: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
nope, they wont budge ive tried the timings as loose as possible allowed by the bios, no good
man i lost count how many times ive tried flashing the bios. ive used every release since 1.0. ive had the board since it was released
i just found out the other day about this bug when i enabled acc by accedent and realized what i had done as soon as i restarted and was stumped as to why i got a ff then realized i enabled acc
I went back to the 1.4b4 bios and now every time I change the speeds to 1600 it says bad bios checksum. I am now running at 1333 6-6-6-20. I hope somone from OCZ can help, but there has been no reply on their forums since Sunday.
Did you clear the cmos after the flash?
Lover your hht speed to 2400 and set your ddr vref voltage to follow the ddr voltage and set the cpu ddr phy voltage to times up and try again
thanks for the pointer, this version has a new tab labeled Graphics, and shows some additional information about the cpu cache on the main tab. good stuff!
not sure if this was directed towards my posts or not, but ill reply anywhoo
my ht speed is 2211 if i remember correctly , i read over at ocz's forums having your ht speed at stock 2000mhz is faster in performance benchmarks as opposed to raising it.....doesnt make much sense to me, but is this true? lower = better on ht??? hmmmm
as for ddr vref voltage, what exactly is that used for? same for cpu-pll, what is that for and whats a safe voltage for the 720? whats the benefits of over-volting it? will it help with higher overclocks?
id really appreciate it if someone could explain the cpu-pll and ddr vref for me. thanks in advance to all who help out here in this thread. you guys rock
I was looking at picking up this board along with a 955 and 8GB of: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231259
Any better RAM options that I should be looking at?
Or not since Newegg is out of 955s. WTF!
Hey guys what drivers do you install for the mobo chipset ? I just installed the South Bridge drivers from AMD Game website, do i need anything else ? Like northbridge drivers, no right ? If i am not using RAID, i don't need those, correct ?
BioShock. Did you use a camera to take snapshots of your Bios settings? Fraps? How did you do it. Thanks.
TurboDiv. I think you have it all. If you are up to date with MSI's and other updates you should be there.
Good Luck.
I did some testing and found my best with HT in 2200's and CPU-NB in the 2400's, anybody else try this? Several hundred points higher than other combo's for me, and you?

LOL 1.53...
2000 HT solved... so far so good :P
I posted it here :) Enjoy

Can anyone confirm that 1.5b3 is good, or is it still buggy like the rest? Need to try unlocking my uber bad clocker 720BE, if it fails at that it's time for a new CPU :D
Ever since 1.51, I believe unlocking cores is fixed. You just needed to run HT/NB at 1600/2000 thats all. If you've never unlocked your 720BE before, then no one can really tell you for sure if you have a good 720 or if its because you set something wrong in the bios.
In my case I had unlocked my 720 on another brand mobo before, so I knew for sure the 1.4x bios were the culprit and not my processor. With 1.51 I am on 4 cores at 3.4ghz stable 24/7.
