These Q9650s are great although if mine were to die I'd most likely go for the i7 920 for wider video card choice/combos. But in the event the Q9650 gets a significant price cut then I may still consider it...the chip is fantastic
Else I'll sit tight until the next gen i7s are released :yepp:

Hmmm it seems noone has managed to get these bad boys 4.3Ghz stable on a x48 mobo...

I accidently closed Realtemp in above pic but load temps got to mid 70's in my bedroom, heating was on :( Cores 2 and 3 don't drop below 39 and 40 respectively either but generall run 1-2c hotter than cores 0 and 1

1.2375 is the VID. Its Devious's old chip :)
However I can go to 495fsb and that work ok but as soon as i try for 500x9 mobo gets stuck on DET DRAM no matter what trd settings i use, haven't really gone into this much as have been working on getting this 4.41Ghz for 24/7 use

So far so good. You mentioned you ran Prime Small overnight im assuming you mean small FFTs? Can you please run Prime Blend if you don't mind?
But lookin good so far  And another thing, are you watercooling the chipset? Reason is my chipset is aircooled and I want to know if I should even bother going for 4.3+...
Mine so far is at 4.275Ghz 1.38v (1.25VID). Oh and I sold my dominators so I'm using my mediocre Corsair 1333Mhz DDR3 2x2gb for now and have not fiddled with timings etc yet

THANK YOU Leefhoof.
Yes I'm happy with my setup.. and yes it does 4.205 Ghz STABLE.. so ya, if I got another board.. and spend $200 dollars, maybe, maybe I could get 4.3 or 4.4 Ghz.. but really. what is 200mhz going to do for me that my 750 FTW at 4.205 Ghz Can't.. get a few points in a benchmark. Not :banana::banana::banana:!
I have mentioned a few times that I wouldn't mind a new board, but I've never said that it was a great board. I've only mentioned that it's done it's job Well for me. and for him to Continuously call my setup a POS, and that talking to me is like a Brick Wall is just a little insulting. I've listened to him. and simply stated how my board has performed. Yes there may be better boards. but for the SMALL.. SMALL increase i "Might" get. it's simply not worth it. I don't care what board I use, I'm not going to get anywhere near 4.5 or more like Napalm and others have. I'm not that extreme. then he started getting all defensive about my system being junk, ya the board isn't that great. but it's not a complete POS. and a waste either. For you to say the CPU is a complete Waste in this board is just retarded. When I'm hitting 4.2 Stable with no problems, or hard work. thats not a waste. like I said above in this post. if I spend $200 and got a better board, plus more $$ for DDR3 I'd maybe, maybe get to 4.4 Ghz, at most.. maybe more if I'm lucky.. and that small increase isn't worth $200-$300 bucks to me, but for him to just start attacking my system and bashing it just because he has personal hate towards Nvidia is just stupid.
Nice work there kill a wat. Nice oc so far. See he is on a X48.. with H20, and only at 4.275.. and I'm doing 4.205 Ghz stable on Air with my "Junk" board.
Anyways I'm done, thanks for your Kind input on other motherboard options. oh and Nice work there Pauly D. thats pretty good also.
Tried going from 25ps through to 100ps both delay and advance but still stuck on DET DRAM :(Quote:

To be honest I can get the basics of overclocking down fine but its the tweaking at the top end that eludes me
Sorry i should have said before, got my CPU and NB under water in the same loop (PA120.3, Fuzion V2, EK NB block, DDC 18w with alphacool top and single bay res)Quote:

BTW in your blend test i believe you have the TJ Max set wrong for the Q9650, its 95c i believe not 100c - someone correct me if im wrong :)
It was small FFT's i was testing. Before it used to always fail blend within the first self test but since putting in the CPU and NB skews it passed 2 self tests. Went to try IBT and BSOD, upped voltages on CPU and NB and did the 15 run test above. Left it doing the small FFT overnight and was going to do blend tonight if it passed but failed after about 5 hours, will blend it once CPU has passed priming ok though have been on PC all day and not had any crashes or issues (so far!)
for 475x9 i needed 1.352 load so your really not far off this chip at all
Give 4.3 a go and tweak it from there, what are your temps like on your chipset?
Must say thanks to a lot of people in this thread as well, wouldn't have got half this far without your input as have been lurking in the background!!
Xguntherc - thanks and i completely agree with you, if your happy with the performance and its rock stable and what you want then why change?? 4.2ghz is not to be sniffed at whatever board its in!
Xguntherc 4.2 is fine by my standards
To be frank i'm very pleased with what I'm on now and will leave it. Since my chipset is on air if I set my NB volt anything above 1.35v it fails prime blend... I can't see the temps as I'm using a P5E3 Premium x48 unlike Rampage Extreme (which I was considering a while back) :)
Oh and my TJMax on Real Temp is set to 100 which I believe is correct. My watercooling on my CPU is very average or needs a service/check up LOL :)
yes, the TJ Max is supposed to be at 100c for these chips.. so thats correct.
Yea. I'm happy with 4.2 I run 24/7 on 4.0 Ghz and I bench with a easy to switch to profile with 4.205 Ghz settings, then bench there. I've actually never tried for farther.. So I'm thinking I could. After all i have a stronger PSU now, better ram. and my air temps at 4.0 are only 30c give or take 1c on each core.
oh and thanks for backing me up. :)
Thanks, just checked and is indeed 100c, my mistake! :rolleyes:Quote:

I was really happy with getting to 4.275ghz, though i was always so close to getting 4.4 under "safe" voltages that it kept making me go for it.
Currently done about of hour of blend fine (still running now) will update shortly.
Maybe the PSU thing is a myth, sorry Napalm, but i'm running this rig (in sig) with my water setup (DDC 18w) 4 cathodes, 5x120mm fans and 2x92mm fans on a coolermaster realpower 620w PSU, though everest reports it still has 12.10v on 12v rails ;)
EDIT: here is 3 hour prime blend stable - got bored and played some CSS after this long :D
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/b...3hourblend.jpg
Nice work.. at only 1.38v.. whats ur vcore set to in the bios?
Good stuff mate. I knew you'd get it. Oh and managed to get some stability with 4.3 :)
25 run IBT so far....I'll tweak it here and there gotta get back to Mass Effect!

oh and somewhere in this Thread over the last few days I remember someone saying they were looking for a Q9650 that was a good deal. I have found a slightly used one for sale if anyone's interested. for $410 and he's hit 4.2 with ease.
oh and question. a guy is trying to sell me a used Q9550. and he says the VID is 1.1750.. thats a really low VID. is that legit. or are they not that low? maybe he had speedstep on or something. or are some that low?
well i know that.. but the VID matters a little. he has it at 3.8 Ghz now, and said he hit that his first try, and never went higher. He's sort of a noob also.
A small variance in VID like the one above is no big deal for me personally. Main thing is cooling the chip and the general overclockability of it and boy do these Q9650s overclock well :D
But its good to see a 4.4Ghz on an x48 I have been searching everywhere and could not find one with Prime Blend screenshots. Thanks PaulyD
I guess P45s are not the only boards capable of bringing out the high potential of these chips. Oh a friend sold me his Corsair HX1000 so I'll plug that into my system soon and see if that helps any. I've heard good things about these HX1000s...
Cheers guys,
I left it running Prime small FFT's to retest the nudge in the vcore and passed practically 10 hours of it:
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/b...0hoursmall.jpg
Bios has vcore set to 1.39375, it idles at 1.384 and loads at 1.4v. The LLC on this board is amazing. If i set 1.4v in bios it idles at 1.4 and loads at 1.408!?!Quote:
Nice work.. at only 1.38v.. whats ur vcore set to in the bios?
Just need to do a long blend test but highly confident this is stable at this now :)
Nice results there Kill a Wat
Let me get a few things STRAIGHT.
1) @ Leeghoofd, I did NOT say you were blind, I DID ask "are you blind", so it was a question.
:)
2 ) @ xguntherc, I did NOT say your set up is a POS, I DID state the NF6 and NF7 Mobos are POS, not the same thing.
well 1.39 is still pretty good there man. Nice work. I've been meaning to try for something higher on my board. but I've been busy. I'll do it I swear.
and no worries humey.. maybe you just came across a little different/harsh to us then you thought you did. No worries!
@PaulyD - your pretty much stable from what I can see. Normally after 3 hours blend its all smooth sailing  Although I have had mine bog at 7hours 57minutes before :( .
if I can run prime for over 3 hours I call it good and don't worry about it... or if I can run mark06, and vantage, and a SuperPI 16M run then I'm ok.
It's official Intel will cut prices on this CPU too !!! ow joy 316 dollars
Intel price cuts
Out goes the E8500, in the Q9650 pure folding powaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I just posted this as some users didn't believe me that they would drop prices on this baby... My dealer confirmed this to me about 2 weeks ago. But honestly I didn't expect this drop... Intel seems to give AMD an even harder time as the 775 quad enthousiasts will go for this CPU for sure... would be nice to see a Q9650 , Phenom II comparison at 4ghz...
Anyone here with a Rampage Formula? Sorry thread is too long to read through.
This chip is even better then the Q6600 in terms of OC, so with that in mind there is no doubt on my mind that any review trying to compare the AMD with the Q9650 will be futile.
Too bad that I'm stuck a month without testing my Q9650 system but I'm pretty sure I can get it 5000Mhz stable for 24/7 use.
Hi Guys,
Decided to bench on AIR with a normal priced air cooler (below$35) to keep peoples hopes up on this amazing cpu.
All low volts for people that want 24/7 use: 1.376vcore, 1.400vtt, 1.57pll, 1.40vnb, 1.20vsb (except ram that I needed more juice to keep tight timings and 5:6 strap).

Temps where high but I think I can squeeze 4500Mhz on air (500x9) just need a little better Air Cooler.
Hope this helps Q9650 users!
You've got a good chip there. I can't get mine prime stable at 4.4GHz with voltages higher than yours. I've tried all that I can with all the GTL Refs and skews but it's not happening. Plus I've got a TRUE and I'm pushing towards the 80's!!!
Hey Pascal, the Giga UD3P is a good help too I think. Simple to use and stabilize, I had a DFI X48 with this chip that needed 1.650vtt, 1.65pll, 1.4vcore to get 470x9...
My temps during Prime95 small ffts are around 85oC dangerous but acceptable during the heat of the day, and I'm talking about a Sunbeam cooler ;)
The X48s are VERY tough to tune from what I've experienced anything over 4.3Ghz stable is gonna really give you a run for money unless you have a special chip/mobo/ram combo....
I think P45 will give the least headache :)
How would you cool that, with that cryo and what voltage tdo you figure?
I found that 503 fsb 4.52Ghz to be a sweet spot for my Q9650 and I have been running it 24/7 on air, With the GTX280sc it has rocked anything i have thrown at it, so I keep thinking about bumping it up but i am wondering why... lol but anyway i stil have been thinking about trying to bump that up once i am done playing with the cold and benching.
Thats what I'm trying to figure out I'm sure CryoZ with a good mount can hold that on Prime, but I'm only guessing, I have to see how the mount will improve Cryo-Z capabilities.
I'm thinking about 1.5 max, but then again without any testing is tough to estimate. My new mount kit will leave Poland on Monday
Another thing that I will need is Watercooling on the mosfets and NB, they can get pretty hot above 5000Mhz.
Thanks mate, but that's only a test bech, it gets too much dust to have it like that for day-to-day.
My current 24/7 PC is this one:
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/s...g?t=1232131236
But I have to get rid of the DFI and put the Gigabyte there...
Having some trouble to get this cpu over 4.3ghz on a x48 Rampage Formula, what bios settings should I use ?
man this thread is such a tease, i am on the fence as to get a 9550 or a 9650, with intels price cuts and only a $50 difference!!.... ARGH!!! , i assume either would go good with a Asus p5Q and a new D-Tek Fuzion V2 WC set up ?
Hey Guys
After lots of testings i achieved this on my Q9650 L825B513 vid 1,25
I tested the Gskills 4,5 hours on memtest and passed perfect with no errors at 2,15vdimm PL7 Stronger on 1240Mhz
This quad needs that vcore to be stable, so far i'm happy

@Sergio
Yay mate your nearly there! You will achieve your goal
Don't wory about volts those are still low and these chips are stronger then we think!
Nice Sergio. Your vcore looks about right for your 1.25VID chip (I have a 1.25 also). I need about 1.38 for 4.2Ghz and around 1.4-1.41 for 4.4Ghz so I'd say your on the right track.
I think these chips can withstand <1.45 24/7 just need to keep an eye on their running/load temps. But definetly H20 on CPU if using 1.4v+ 24/7
Thanks mate
All my tests are on 26C to 27C ambient in my room and outside more than 30C, I'm on water sharing the loop with an ultra vmoded, but i got great temps, the 3 san aces at the rad are awesome. Also i have a fan blowing air on the NB and the Gskills.
Can you tell me your settings for 4200 on vcore set, pll, vtt ? so i try :D I've been waiting for this for more than a month as i had horrible unstabilty issues till with all the help from ppl here i found it, i just needed a good combo of a rock solid setting to start with.
Cheers
Sergio
No problems mate:
My settings for 4.2Ghz on the key volts you mentioned are below:
1) vCore - 1.382 (real via CPUZ)
2) CPU PLL - 1.61 (real via Everest)
3) CPU VTT - 1.38 with 70mV GTL references for cores 2 & 4 in BIOS
Hope that helps.
All in all you are on par with your current volt settings. The above volts were set quite a while ago (around Nov 08) so I was a little new to the Q9650 back then.
I think you can lower CPU PLL and VTT a little more as I passed 1 hr prime blend using 1.34vtt with 4.4ghz...overall the above are relatively safe and I don't have a problem using them 24/7
Hi Guys, Just found this thread :)
I'll be getting the UD3P later this week and hopefully It'll do far better with my Q9650 than the Maximus Formula did, as it's hitting a wall @ 3.8Ghz :(
These posts will help me enormously so thank you, and thanks especially to Jor3lBR because the above test & infomation will really save some time
Kind Regards
Orb
I'm pushing upwards and have a small question that I would like resolving... Basically, prime95 is failing on core 2 (ie. the third window... core 0, core 1, core 2, core 3) and I want to know which gtl ref is associated with this core. I don't get bluescreens or freezing, just this core fails during small fft, and usually within 2-3 minutes. Should I be touching gtl ref 0/2 or 1/3? I've read opposing things on which core is on which die and is associated with the relevant gtl ref. So, if someone could clarify it for me I'd really, really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot.
Q9650 now $349 on newegg.
$339 on directron.com
kill_a_watt
I tested and my chip needs more vcore to achieve 4230(470x9) stable, or maybe more VTT i don't know...
This is what i am testing now

I heard about Intel 45nm OC degradation, that after a few weeks or months it become less & less oc able.
Is the Q9650 also affected ??
Whats the black sidebar gadget called in the last pic ?
No, actually all CPU chips do. It's a temperature thing. If you let it run hot, it'll degrade a bit over time. Usually a small vcore bump'll fix it.Quote:

Looks like your IBT runs are good for 4.2Ghz.
Have you run Prime95 small FFT for 470x9? I'm pretty sure you'll get core failure if using those 4.2Ghz settings but just run it and tweak from there.
Normally my order of tweak in small fft is the lowest CPU-related volt then lastly the vCore - it really depends what your individual chip needs
Another thing you may want to try is:
CPU vCore - 1.42
CPU PLL - 1.61
CPU VTT - 1.42
GTL refs - core 0 - auto, core 1 - +70mV, core 2 - auto, core 3 - +70mV
Note: the above settings allowed me to small fft on 495x9... so they should be ample for you. I think 4.25-4.3 should need (at most) 1.4vCore and 1.4-1.42 CPU VTT
*with the GTL refs you may want to use the formula VTT x GTL ref then try different GTL combos that yield the same result eg .67 GTL that yields the same value as your current setup then try +/- 1 or 2 notches. Although from my experience I did not have much luck with this but I didn't try it for very long. Also i'm assuming you have been keeping a log? If not it would be a good idea
Thanks
Nugzo - Are the GByte boards as well made as the Max Formula?
Just another couple of questions for you guys who have the UD3P highly OC'ed....
1. How are NB temps over 4.2Ghz?
2. Is there a jumper for a BIOS reset?
3. What BIOS should I use? (already DL F5) in anticipation :)
Regards
Orb
When buying a Q9650 now, what do you think is the best chipset/board for the best OC? X48 or P45?
P45 I've been told by more than a few people.. get a P45.
Also at those prices i really really want to sell my Q6700 that is my backup and get a Q9650 for a backup.. :)
oh and I got bad news, Not sure if it's just a Bios problem and a new BIOS would help me. but on my ghetto 750i FTW Motherboard. the CPU VTT only goes to 1.4 maybe 1.45 I can't remember. but thats as High as it will let me take the vtt/fsb votage. So either I need another BIOS revision. Or the eVGA 750i just doesn't go that high, but then again it's not really known for it's multiple options in the bios, as there isn't very many.. lol.
(This is where I say your right, my 750i sucks).. lol jk jk. it sucks but it's done me well. I was able to hit 4.3 Ghz a few days ago. I couldn't bench with it, kept crashing. but I didn't go over 1.368 v either. I guess I should try raising voltage even higher. as these are only bench runs, I'm not going to leave my voltage that high.. ever.
Quality of the ud3 is close to the maximus. real close.
Dont know about NB Temps... This board doesnt have a NB sensor.
There are 2 pins for the clr cmos instead of 3 like a lot of boards. I have a power button from an old compaq hooked to it. Honestly i've never needed it. If your OC is bad, the board will revert back on its own every time. It'll power cycle a few times.... just let it do its thing and it'll boot at default settings.
i think F7c is the best bios.
Hey Orbiter,
You wont need a fan to run 4 to 4.1Ghz, I would only use it for FSB's around 500 or above that.
If you don't wanna remove the original cover you can just buy 2 little CoolJags that have 18CFM in Push-Pull (side-by-side) 6v and you're fine!
If removing original heat sink (hot blow-dryer and lots of Patience) you will only need a 50 or 60mm fan on top.
Thank you, will try but seems that this quad needs more food, i runt a max stress using 3048MB IBT 10 run on 4185(465x9) mems 1200PL7 and gave me on last run different residual :( i don't know what can be causing that as mems passed overnight memtest.
Cheers
Sergio
I'm using Jor3lBR's 4400 template . I was 12hours Blend and 13hrs Small FFT with his settings. I bumped vtt, pll, mch and vcore all up 1 notch and ive been priming for 4 hours now @ 495FSB 4455MHz.
We should probably move this discussion over to the UD3 thread now.
Here is my NB cooling..
I found 503 qas my sweet spot on that board, I think in a week or so i will go back and see it could get it higher, that is just such a killer set up,.
nice work nugzo  plus that is a friggin sweet case!
Ok Jor3lBR thank you
Nice setup ya got there nugzo & very nice going on the OC too :yepp:
I Think I'd be more than happy with a quick test at 4.400GHz when I get mine, then for 24/7 I think around 4.0 - 4.2Ghz would be fine.
Orb
very nice set up nugzo
Definetly the P45 when it comes to the higher clocks. But I haven't explored the other aspects of P45 vs other chipsets when it comes to performance eg. gaming performance, video card (8x8 vs 16x16) etc etc....
But for pure high clocks and bench runs possibly P45 is the king...
I wish I had a lower VID chip I'd definetly go for 4.5Ghz+ my RE can easily boot into Windows at 500x9
@ Sergio - I think you can definetly get your 470x9 just got to find those settings. I remember for me, it took a while to get 4.2 Ghz stable whilst <4.2Ghz was very quick. But my hat goes off to those with the not so good chipsets and 1.25VID chips and 4.2Ghz+ stable as I know there is quite some fiddling to do :)
Very nice Nugzo that rig looks really good. I like the chipset cooling solution, that has to be a massive improvement over the standard heatsink. Any chance you can show us some benches I'd like to see what a quad at that speed and a GTX295 can do.
Ordered monday; received from newegg today.
q9650 Batch# L828a480
vid: 1.1000v (according to CoreTemp 0.99.3)
Running now stock on an MSI Neo2FR p35 motherboard (rev. 1) until paday when I will be ordering a UD3P.
CPU-z reports cpu volts @ 1.06 - 1.07 right now
Wish me luck, I hope I gotta good chip, because I spent a whole year with a crappy overclocker chip. I deserve a good one this time.
Anyone have any info on this batch #?
Thank you guys.
I just got my 9650 in today also and so far is definitely looks to be better than my 9550. :) Idle and loaded temps are several degrees lower so hopefully its accurate. VID is 1.15 and batch is L827A945.
just purchased my first intel quad core proccessor,so tommorrow me and my UD3P will be joining you guys here with our new friend Mr9650.hopefully we have as much fun as you guys are having
I just got my Q9650 today from newegg. it is batch: L826A965 with 1.25v vid
4.2GHz (467 FSB * 9 multi) at 1.296v vcore at load (1.312 idle) and Running H2O.
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=490072
I made sure I was ready for this chip. I spent the last few days tweaking my motherboard and (now old Q6700) for a stable 467 FSB OC. Once I got it dialed in, It was a matter of just stabilizing the vcore. So far I am just past 6Hrs stable in Prime95.
I have been considering going with a UD3P to see what this chip can really do...
First attempt at 4ghz, this looks to be very promising.

hey mate
I tried this settings and tested carefully
467 x 9 MEMS 1245 5-5-5-15-5-65-8-5
CPU Skews Normal - NB Skew delay 100
RAM SKEWS all channels on 100
NB GTL +40 /DDR REF +12,5 A/B
NB DDR REF -25
MEM OC Charger = disabled
STATIC READ = disabled
PL 7 / STRONGER
vcore set on bios 1,4
pll 1,526
vtt 1,4
nb 1,45
sb 1 1,55
sb 2 1.2
CPU GTLS +10/-35/+10/-35
With this settings i passed 8hs MEMTEST no errors but i can only pas 15min BLEND...
I changed CPU GTLS but BLEND fails before or after---I also tried to run PL10, LIGHTER, seems the same, it doesn't come from memory as it passed overnight tests...
I don't know maybe is the chip i also tried with 1,42 vtt and no go also, more PLL also fails sooner, the only one is vcore at 1,4 set on bios it idles at 1,39 and loads 1,4.
Thanks
Sergio
Hi Sergio
It might be possible that you have hit a limit on your CPU/Mobo...I really can't say for sure...the only way really is to either try some more or try a different setup....
It looks like you have done quite a bit of fiddling and still have had no luck.
From your previous post it seems you have already tried to fiddle with your CPU and NB skews....what happens when you raise the vCore? Also what happens if you raise the north bridge volt? In all honesty I haven't noticed any difference with my gaming with a 4.41Ghz and a 4Ghz...I just wanted to get the most out of my CrossFireX and will probably use my 4.23Ghz profile as a nice compromise 24/7.
I did a quick test on 470x9 with lowered vCore (1.36 load 1.35 idle) on my Prime Blend stable 4.2gb profile:
25 run IBT max stress ~3gb memory -
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8...0423ghzew1.jpg
Thanks mate my chip or mobo or whatever reason needs 1,42 to pass that...
IN your same volts i can do stable 4140 (460x9) 1227 PL7 Stronger
ALSO on my sig speed i discovered that i need 2 notchs of vcore as i tested yesterday and gave me residual norm...so 4185 (465x9) 1240 PL7 Stronger needs 1,39 idle and 1,4 load
funny thing is that at this speed MEMS loves this 1200+ speed and PL7, i tested all overnite on memtest various times and passes perfect, but if i go on other mems settings i dig intro troubles, maybe it comes from that.
Cheers and thank you for your help.
Sergio
One core failed 6.5hrs into the test, so I upped the vcore slightly. Here are the results:
16hrs Prime95 stable

EOD,very nice,is this your first quadcore?just curious as to what the learning curve is coming from a dual core.is there much difference OCing a quad?also what warehouse did newegg ship your 9650 from?EDIT-i just saw that you have a q6700 sorry.but maybe you can still give me some advice?
One last question here for my peace of mind. Is it "fairly safe" to run the Q9650 24/7 at 1.35 vcore if the max temps on all four cores never goes above 61C? I was able to get it stable at 4250MHz but I have to increase the vcore to 1.35(bios setting and reading at 1.347).
