I agree completely. The cookie cutter overclocks of the E8600 era are over.

I just toyed with Vcore and VTT so far.. and ofc the various mults - no need to raise any of the other voltages for me. Unless raising QPI PLL decreases Vcore/VTT needed or something. Might try that when I got the time (probably next month or so -.-)
I installed water over the weekend - I was able to put together a very nice loop with much help from the folks on this forum.
Much thanks to all those that helped!
WC system added - ST355 with XSPC top, ST GTZ, Feser 480 with 4x ultra kaze
Initial indications are temps ~15C lower vs high end air cooling (noctua U12P with 2 fans push/pull).
Pics and initial run at 4.4 (HT off) to follow -
SteveRO can you test plz 20 X 200 with HT on ? Which temps do you get with the GTZ block ? With my I920 at 1.42Vcore (HT on , turbo off) I get around 74 max ( with the fans at 7v ) after a 2 hour small FFT session... The True after one hour was already in the high 80's
I have had very bad luck with anything x20, i seem to have much better luck with x21 - prior to water - results to date below. I am currently priming at 4.43 (HT off) - max temp to date (with water) is only 68C (when running x4 fans) and this with running 1.55 vcore exclusively.
any reason you mounted the block in that way? great temps for 1.55vcore
HT off is easy :D
Try with HT on, that one's really evil. I can prime at 4,4 with around 1,5V and HT enabled.. I doubt it can be done on water unless its chilled. I get into positive temps as well there.
I might be able to get prime stable 4.2 ht on but I doubt 4.4 ht on will happen - although I am still tinkering!
I am going to try some x23 settings next.
I am doing 4.2Ghz with 1.40v vcore. 200x19 with turbo mode and HT turned on. CPUID validation is in my sig.
^^^thanks.!
Ok i see you guys are running you uncore at 16x. How????
all i see is qpi link(slow or fastest) and then uncore ratio which goes up to 24x. If i set it to 16x my board fails to post.
Hey guys, thanks to everybody who has posted in their settings and voltages so far. I have decided, however, to move this experiment to it's own thread as to not interfere with this one... so please check the new thread "The i7 Overclocking Study Thread" which will be posted up in a couple minutes here. There you can all dump your data on me without getting it lost in a sea of other posts.
Just try to find out which mults your 920 likes. Usually 19 or 21 are the best (meaning it takes less voltage for more mhz), and usually it hates the 20x. My 940 does 4Ghz at 1,304V linpack stable (meaning prime would probably pass at even less) using the 21x or 23x mult. Using the 22x it needs 1,4V too --> even mults usually suck for i7.
That is one of the things I will of course look into, but I have to believe that it goes deeper than just multi's. Perhaps multi to BLCK ratio or some other preportion along with RAM or QPI... who knows, but woth enough data we can start to sort through and rule things out.
Anyway heres the thread link, so those of you with low voltage OC's please post in and help the cause, so to speak.

i just made a post showing what i just accomplished. i will post all settings once i stabalize it.
