Sure it works, with vcore on auto.. ;)

I was using F4j for the X58-Extreme and that was solid for me. I tried the F4m and when I run everest, I keep locking up when it goes to read the L3 cache write part.
I've upped the voltages and same thing.
Does anyone have any similar experiences?
I'm going to re-install everest again and if it keeps happening, then I'll be forced to go back to F4J
I think i might have been over-volting my memory before (1.75v), when i was trying 10x multi with 20x uncore, and it couldn't boot.
Now 1650mhz booted + priming with 1.68v.
I don't think this will turn out to be useful after all though, i just checked my memory bandwidth at this setting and i'm down to 13500 read!!! This is from 16000+ on the higher bclock with 8x memory multi. Obviously the lower uncore frequency is hampering my IMC's performance.
So anyone trying to run lower bclock with 10x memory 20x uncore, who can't get it to work, don't bother it's not worth trying
Not specifically, but they aren't getting that hot, not as hot as my previous kit for sure. They're in a pretty cool section of TJ07 with those 120mm intake/outtake fans in the corner.
The dimms will do 1660mhz at 1.68v, but 1670mhz is failing in under a minute even at up to 1.8v. I might just have some crap memory, but i'm sure they're the same samsung ic's i had before and they should be going higher than this. The worst thing is i don't even know how much voltage is really being put into memory, what program will tell you this?
I miss Aegis Panel on my blackops :D
Easytune will give you a read iirc. I've never used the Aegis Panel...Black Ops boards were none-existent in Canada when they released, to my dismay :(
But I do miss my Smart Guardian :)
Like I was saying; speed binning for memory took a huge turn for the worse as far as getting those golden sticks so if you're going to chase the high clocks, just go right to highest end that you can afford.
BobbyLite has some pretty interesting memory speed comparo's in his link, check that out before you put too much faith in memory speed. From what we've seen it has almost zero impact on benchmark performance, going from 1200 to 1600.
- What are the differences between UD5 and Extreme? It's just the cooling?
- Is Extreme just for watercooling, or can I just use it with the heatpipes? Is the waterblock removable or exchangeable, like BloodRage?
And finally, are this boards better than the ASUS X58?
Thanks!
That's major suckage, it's a great feature once you have your final overclock down. No need to be pumping 1.45v 4.3ghz when browsing youtube!
If i knew about this, i probably would have went with the Bloodrage.. I guess i'll have to read up on this 'pencil mod'
Yeah i always knew i would probably end up below 1600mhz and just tuning timings, would have been nice to have another decent overclockable memory though. I've not given up yet. I can't find a review for my kit but i found some for other 1.65v kits, and the review i was reading (legit reviews kingston ram) they were scared to push past 1.65v so resorted to raising QPI instead. I'll try that.
Found the voltage reporting tab in Easytune, though it doesn't show QPI voltage unfortunately. Seems the board is undervolting my ram by .2v, still doesn't explain why i'm having trouble though
No one knows and the people that do i believe are not allowed to say  Others will tell you one way or the other so there's little way to really know for sure
No you don't have to watercool the NB on the extreme - i tried and it leaked. I'm not sure if you can take the thing off without taking the whole cooling mount off with it, and i have no idea about the Asus.
I take it we can add Foxconn to the short list of mobos that can work EIST with any Vcore then?
So it's Abit (which is no more.. *cry*) DFI and Foxconn yet..
Good thing my personal X58 mobo is gonna be the DFI :wasntme:
Not that I ever idle of course (runninmg WCG 24/7). Just on principle :ROTF:
Well the blackops sure handled it no sweat. Been a few months but if i remember correctly it dropped to 1.35v for me, along with multi to 6x (OC was 9.5x and 1.45v) It got crazy BSOD on your ass if you tried to use sleep mode though :D Vdroop on that board was really not bad at all, it was pretty angelic actually compared to this. I guess you don't appreciate that stuff til you have a board that's not so good.. The big kicker is that i decided against the Bloodrage based pretty much on the pci-e slot placement, which wouldn't allow triple-SLI. Now i've decided to go for 2 GTX295's, so it would have been fine >.>
I didn't know this EIST with manual vcore was a big issue, only 2 companies have boards that can do this?!
P.s just done a fresh install of vista after trying to run 165bclk QPI 24x Uncore 24x corrupted one of the disks in my raid 0 array.
I thought these were supposed to max out @ 4ghz, not mess up your data, any thoughts?
As far as I can tell Extreme is same as UD5 except the extreme cooling. If that is case, I bought the Extreme and converted it into the UD5. But that being said, I really like the board.
You can remove the waterblock (4 screws, so should be able to replace as well) and not install the big ugly pcie slot cooling accessory (which decreased nb temps only 1-2c). My prime 12hr NB temps were 53-55C max (software) 46-47C (IR gun to bottom cooling block). I took the WB (empty) and the pcie cooling off and just put a spot fan on bare nb cooler (in pic I turned spotfan down out of way, usually is directly on top of NB sink), now max load NB temps 47C (software), and 40C IR gun to cooling block. Not that lowering temps would or did do anything for ocing anyways...just had the fans.
Hi
hi have this board whith F3 bios a 920 , dual channel corsair 1600, 4870 X2 and a sata DVD
i Can't install windows vista!
when he instalation come to expands file de software says can't copy necessary files!
no board errors no anything?
plase can help me? thanks
P:D i can't upodate bios with USB stick... Q-flash not chaek USB ports...
Help plase
Cool thing is, you can add your own waterblock on the NB (threads FTW) and not have to mod anything else. Watercool NSB-1 fits perfectly, for example ;)
Can't do that on the UD5. So I'd say UD5 for air, Extreme for water...
just got the GTZ installed, now maybe I can open this beeyotch up :)
hey guys, i got a question, first i got 4ghz 14 hours prime stable with 1.375v vcore , qpi/vtt 1.315v
then i flashed to f4n and i needed more vcore so i flashed back to f4k and i still needed more vcore so i ended up doing 21 hours of prime @ 4ghz @ 1.395v vcore
anyway i was folding with 2 smp clients and when i got up this morning the pc had crashed, but when it crashes it doesnt just restart , it kinda just hangs and my gpu fan revs flat out until i push the restart button,
anyone else getting that when it crashes ?
and why is it crashing after 21 hours of prime small ftt, i also ran memtest86 ver 2.10 to test memory and that was ok
dudes, it was the first minute that I fired it up, just comparing my temps from air. Jesus lol.
Blend gives hotter temps on the i7...at least what I've tested so far.
Dinos,
usually SmallFFT gives the highest temps all right, but I noticed something different with i7 as well.
Like I said in a previous post, I ran prime blend for 53 hours on a customer rig and started off with around 50C on all cores after 30 minutes.
At the end, it stabilized at around 60C, while watertemp didn't change that much (was with 8 threads enabled though). Strangely I saw that high temp on a larger FFT (4096k I think it was) than smallFFT
Given the i7's IMC I guess a higher VTT could well make prime blend hotter than just small or larger ffts.
Sounds like a solid enough theory to me.
Running 12GB of ram, 170BCLK and 1,45V QPI/VTT like I said...
Well remember the description for small FFT "data fits into l2 cache, not much ram used", so i'd assume that means it doesn't go into the l3 cache either, which is the largest cache. Blend will put load on the uncore aswell so not surprising to see temps higher.

This is my 24/7 setting for so far. 2 hrs prime stable is more than enough for me. I did it with Bios F4r and the following bios settings:
http://users.telenet.be/nils-marleen/BEST
Now i want to push it a little further to 4.2 Ghz also with HT On but prime 95 fails in 2 minutes, even with 1.392 Vcore. I also tried some additional cooling to the north bridge but nothing helps. Can someone plz give me a tip how to achieve 4.2 24/7 stable?
Thanks.
CPU Batch is 3837B194
Still priming, but most likely my 24/7 settings minus HT becase well...I'm a gamer and HT doesn't give me anything but heat.
Nilos, I have the identical cpu batch as you. I'm using 1.4 in bios, which gives 1.376 idle and returns with 1.344v load. QPI/VTT is at 1.335. To keep these levels air isn't going to cut it. I was capped at 200x20 on air.
killer rev! what is vcore in bios, as well as your qpi and pll? 4.2 w/HT sick
more voltage... 4ghz is just the wall for most Ci7s. After that frequency voltage requierments to get the rig stable make big jumps.
Thats a pretty sweet improvement in temps and OC from air to water, can you list difference in vcore needed on air vs water per any OC when you find difference. Interested to see for example if need notch or two less vcore at same OC or if just requires same with water vs air.
I wouldn't think different cooling would make a difference to volts needed for stable clocks, unless you were temp-bound ie reaching tjmax and experiencing throttle.
Does the pencil mod work for anyone? I applied it but still seeing the same vdroop. Is it supposed to cut it out altogether or reduce it? I'm still setting for example 1.462v, getting 1.44v, and dropping to 1.42v under load.
thats a bios setting you can load in your bios...
Bios F4m. All good here.
4Ghz/211x19/Qpi 36x/Uncore 16x/Ram 8x 1688 8-8-8-24/HT off/Turbo off/Loadline On
100+ Linpack 32bits stable
Vcore: 1.38125 in Bios (1.360 idle - 1.344 load in EasyTune6)
Qpi/Vtt: 1.36 in Bios
Vdimm: 1.66 in Bios (1.648 in EasyTune6)
IOH Core: 1.16000
Everything else in default
who here uses the stock water cooling block on the extreme?
I wouldnt trust it plus the barbs are too small for my liking
onto a fat32 flash drive then load which is f12 or f11 while in bios
thanks, bobbylite.... i tried and it loaded successfully...
while this BIOS not suits for me..... still can't run at 195*20....
you guys change bios' like under-wear.
lol...I am still using F4m, but looks like main non cosmetic differences is in secondary timings of RAM, wonder if that is what is causing stability problems in some. They also changed the round trip latency. But no real reason to change to it either. My OCZ (rma'ed from dead stick, now using corsair dom) did not like RAM timings on one of the beta bioses, it was unstable until I manually changed them to another bios settings that was stable. F4j left, F4m right
Very interesting, rge, had not seen this thing. I returned to F4j not so much for stability (it could have gone up a notch to QPI and continue testing), but for those cursed frozen ...
Yep, all settings exactly same including performance turbo on both (have always been on perf. turbo), just bios different... several beta bioses in F4 have altered mem subtimings, and different from F3 as well.
k, well seems they are still tweaking the bios, which isn't a bad thing.
Where can i download the f4j bios for the ex-58 extreme as this seems to be the best most stable bios atm from what i've read?
Cant see it any where
Phil
i presume that the bios is in english?
Phil
final settings.
how much better or what is better from f3 to f4j bios?
and the same question phill asked if its in english
Damn if I could only get Easytune working on Vista64
Figured it was about time i did one of these fancy pics...
This was a quick OC tonight, no tuning done on voltages to find out what i actually need, memory timings not touched, etc, far from final!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...estar/bnch.jpg
It wouldn't work with a nasty old GeForce 6200 and no graphics drivers at all.
EasyTune works for me on Vista 64bit w/ 2x 4870x2 in CFX using Catalyst 8.12.
I spent most of last night reading all 30+ pages of this thread because I have the Extreme board and cannot resume from S3 sleep. At least one or two others in this thread have had the same problem - has anyone figured out what the cause is and how to fix it?
I had my first board replaced b/c two of the SATA ports went bad . . . but on BOTH boards, I could not get S3 sleep to work properly. Any ideas?
I'm using ex58-ud5, i7 920, and F4R BIOS, with 180*20, cpu 1.28v, qpi 1.28v, cpu/pll 1.84v, vdimm 1.58v,turbo on, ht on. all else default....
it runs well, prim95 also fine. memtest wen 2000% ok. but one small problem occurs when I was watching movies with this PC. After watching about one hour or so, the sound would suddenly went very small, and then came back normal. It last a few seconds. And this occured several times during the movie show. and then, it's fine again.
so should I increase some other voltages, say ioh, or some others?
BTW, should I test if the integreated sound card is stable or not, is there any specific test that I should run?
easy tune 6 doesnt work here either, thats with a 4870 1gb 32 bit vista, i tried to get it going last night again,
ive noticed there is a big difference in voltages needed between 1 hour prime , 5 hours prime 10 hours prime even 20 hours prime, and then even after 20 hours or more of prime , it still isnt stable enough to run 2 smp clients folding and ive tried small ftt and blend tests, thats with HT on and turbo on
Hey Freshy ..
I think you were onto something with these settings ..
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=657
I used exactly these settings & been priming for 90mins + now which is farthest I've ever got at at 4Ghz CPU clock .. lowest temps too ..
But I'm confused about your Vcore .. your later posts here are saying you had to up the Vcore to ~1.39V after BIOS updates ..
But then the link in your sig to 4Ghz settings show Vcore of only 1.328V (CPU-Z) .. back on 12-10-2008 ..
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=761
So what were you using for that test ? QPI/Vtt volts etc ?
Same here never got easytune or des working and tested every version possible, SP1 /SP2 but never got problems with S3 :D
