Awesome Nils.
Is it best to push the sleeve all the way up to the connector, then shrink the heatshrink so it covers a little bit of the metal ATX pin (So it ends up going inside the connector?)
It's best to shrink onto the pin very far (just until the two little blades stick out) This way it's impossible for the shrink to slide and perfect tension is guaranteed. Of course it just works with very thin heatshrink. The perfect optic is just a side-effect. The anti-slide is the true benefit. Shazza showed how to do it. I just have one picture from a girl (Kätzchen) here in Germany (interesting that the girls were the ones who documented it :)) that shows it:
http://img1.abload.de/img/netzteilsleeven08n5gr.jpg
But remember to let the heatshrink cool down before you put the cable back into the connector.
Do one side with "air to shrink to air to shrink to air ..." movement so it doesn't heat up tooooo much. See how it shrinks. Then change the side and do the same. Give it some breaks in between so it doesn't get too hot. The last thing you do is shrinking at the transition to the sleeve. There you need to be even more careful, because melted sleeve looks like poo. Experiment and find the right intervalls. Don't just hold it into the fire ... move through it. Never keep standing in the flame.
I just know how to work with my materials, so I can't guarantee how it works with all the other stuff out there. Some might even start to burn :D
after i cut the sleeving, how can i get it to melt the ends nicely so they don't curl over and leave bulges once i do the heatshrink?
i tried a heatgun to shrink the heatshrink and ended up melting the wires...on the low setting
I use a lighter instead of a candle but the movement is basically the same: Flick the flame back and forth quickly across the shrink, then turn, then repeat. Black sleeve is more forgiving. Other colors may darken in fire, heatgun should be used for that.
I use a pen torch. It burns if your not careful but once you get the hang of it, works like a champ!
Okay well I decided to start sleeving today after I got my stuff in and have run into a serious problem... I bought 1/8th" sleeving and 1/8th" heat shrink and there is absolutely no way that this heat shrink will go over the sleeving.. I also bought 3/8th" sleeving and heat shrink and my heat shrink slides right over it (snugly) but the 1/8th inch heat shrink fits INSIDE of my sleeving... What the hell is going on?!
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/7...oram013.th.jpg
Sooo I should have bought 1/4" heat shrink instead of 1/8th" :D
I use 1/4" and 1/4" shrink and sleeve...I've even (barely) managed to squeeze 1/8" shrink over 1/4" sleeving...that heatshrink almost looks like it's already been shrunk
Dust Anyone?... Heres a weeks worth of dust on my test bench sleeving :)
Non photoshopped straight from camera.

Very nice! Can you pull the sleeve tighter any more? To eliminate that tiny bit of red ;)
Thats as tight as it goes :) no more, nothing :)
hehe, nice work Bentleya!
3-pin fan cable - right?
If so: Fantastic job with the SMALL sleeve :D
Thanks Dangals for the how to. I am building my first WCed Case and I am also modding my first case in the same time, and this guide made me want to sleeve the PSU.
However, I have been banging my head for two days when I came to remove the ATX plug pins. I have tried the staple trick to remove them, but I never managed to remove even one: either I was using a small staple two soft and it was bending when I tried to stick inside before it reaches the small ridge, or I was using a thicker and stronger stapler but there was not enough space to slide it on both side of the pin.
I haven't tried to buy a removal tool though. This is because I stay in Malaysia and first, it is not easy to come by, and second it cost almost the equivalent of 20$ here. It is not a problem by itself but knowing me, I would have broken a dozen of them before I finish to sleeve the whole PSU
So I think I found a very easy (and very cheap :D) alternative using a 1$ tool (sorry if a similar solution has already been mentioned in the thread, I haven't read all 23 pages).
Below is how I proceed (click on the pictures for higher resolution)
1) I bought a 1$ precision screwdrivers set as below:
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
2) Using the smallest flat head screwdriver (1mm), I slide it on one side of the pin I want to remove, the flat head being parallel to the side it is very easy to go in between the pin and the edge:
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
3) I insert firmly the screwdriver inside until I feel I reached the ridge (at the level of the green arrow in the diagram below). Be careful, it is possible to cut through the ridge with the screwdriver if too much force is applied. Afterward, the pin may not hold very well because the ridge has been cut. To avoid that, you can mark on the screwdriver how far you should go before to stick it inside.
a) check how far you should go
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
b) stick the screwdriver until you reach the ridge inside the plug (you will feel more resistance once reached)
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
Don't go further than the green arrow in the diagram below:
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/vv...de/Moogle1.jpg
4) With a pair of pliers, grab the screwdriver, turn 180 degrees and then remove the screwdriver.
EDIT: Actually after more training, I don't even need the pair of pliers. It doesn't need much force so turning the screwdriver by hand works too.
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
5) Repeat steps 2 to 4 for the other side of the pin.
6) Just pull on the wire the other side and it will come off with no resistance at all.
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
What happens is when turning the screwdriver, the flat head will pry on the "fins" (not sure how you call the small bit pointed by the green arrow in the diagram above) and put it back into place. Then there is nothing to stop the pin to slide out:
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpghttp://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
Once the sleeving job is done, just reuse your screwdriver to bend the "fins" of each pin as below:
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpghttp://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
Then slide the pin back in, and it will be back into place and it will hold firmly to the plug.
http://www.jaconference.com/tj07/TJ-...28Small%29.jpg
I don't know if I am the only one having problem with either the staple trick or the removal tool. But when I tried the staple solution, it was very frustrating and I wanted to send everything fly through the window after 10 min of struggle. With this solution, the sleeving is a real joy :p:
I hope it helps others which also have problem with the staple / removal tool
Thx man....I for one happens to be the minority who has problem with the staple method
As my husband is the artistic one in the family, I thought I would try to get him into doing a bit of sleeving for me ;)
I gave him a couple of old PSU's to practice on, he pretty quickly got the pin removal down, but a couple of problems have arisen.
We have the blue handled molex crimper, he has found it fine for replacing molex pins, but cannot get it to work with the atx ones, says he cannot get it to tighten enough.
What is the best way to cut the heatshrink and get it all identical lengths?
I had some of the PPC sleeving, so gave him some to 'play' with, here's his 1st ever attempt, which I don't think is too shoddy!
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/e...r/1stmolex.jpg
Honestly after using all the types of tools, a single staple deftly placed and pushed in firmly is BY FAR the best tool for removing these pins.
My favorite now is the two pin (ones with the round tops) method followed closely by the staple method.
Staples work fine but if you haven't used the real Molex tool then you're missing out. The Molex pin remover effortlessly removes the pins, easier than all others.
Your guide on the first page does not have the Pictures anymore.
It seems the bandwidth gets exceeded for the pics later in the month ... maybe we can come up with a way to help Dangal's out with an alternate hosting site. His call.
It seems Photobucket has reduced the monthly bandwidth from 25G/month to 10G/month.
Go skinnee go!
Yes Skinnee and I are currently working out the details - hopefully the pics will be back up in another day or so.
w00t Dangals and Skinnee :D
PICS ARE NOW BACK UP
Big Props to Skinnee for hosting my pics on his site - thanks mate
Look what turned up on my doorstep this morning

P.S. yes, I know my sensor needs a clean.
Great guide and thanks for getting the pics back up, going to try my first sleeving job this weekend and this thread has been a tremendous help!

EDIT:
Here's something I've found works for me quite well - a pair of self-closing tweezers to keep the sleeve in place while you sort out the heatshrink:
http://www.abload.de/img/dscf1548myeg.jpg
The result:
http://www.abload.de/img/dscf1554vb6a.jpg
Here's my first try on PSU sleeving. I first had to open up the PSU and remove the horrible, horrible sleeving that was already there (Etasis ET750). I really need to practice getting this heatshrink consistent. Probably gonna redo these:
http://www.abload.de/img/dscf1557yymm.jpg
I'm afraid that I may have gone a bit overboard with the heatgun on the first 2 wires - has anyone had any problems with voltages after sleeving? It's not like I melted the wires or anything (I hope), just kept the heatgun pointed at the pin for what I think might have been too long...
Hey guys,
i´m Ferhan from Germany and a friend of Nils :)

N1 pictures with amazing sleeve skill :bows:
Nice sleeving job (as usual). ;)
Good to have you here at XS, Ferhan.
:welcome:
w0000t - Ferhan is in the house!!!!!!!!! LOVE!
Nah, the heatshrink hasn't melted, I'm just being paranoid and wondering. It is really heavy-duty heatshrink, though - 4:1 ratio 6mm glue-lined. Works great for fans, etc. (see previous pictures) but I'm gonna have go and buy some non-glue-lined 3:1 4mm for the ATX and EPS connectors - this current stuff is so thick when shrunk that I had to trim it thinner just to get the pin back into the connector, and that's still with only heatshrinking up to the end of visible plastic on the cable!
@Ferhan - Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Wow Ferhan your work is truely amazing :)
Do you hand cut all your shrink wrap, or have a tool to get it all accurate lengths?
Holy frick & frack, those shots are amazing Ferhan! :yepp:
Outstanding work!
First off, amazing work fhantastic!
Now, to my problem. Has anyone else had a problem removing the pins on an Corsair HX1000 PCI-E Modular cables? I've tried staples and pins and cannot get them to budge. All of the other cables were easy but these are being a real pain!
Use a small screwdriver (0,9mm or 1mm) put it in and TURN 180°.
Put it from one side turn 180 and then put it from the other side and turn. Also u can check at page 28 or 29 there is guide with PSU connector from Rastaman
My first sleeving job, I sleeved my 24 pin last night and I think it took me about 3 hours! I didn't realize how tedious this was, the first couple went real easy so I figured I would be done in no time but when midnight rolled around I knew I was at it for a while. I have to say I am addicted now and I want to sleeve everything, hell if my dog would stay still long enough I would sleeve her! :D
EDIT: As my son always says, "Screen shot or no proof."
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/5475/img6828v.th.jpg
Dylskee i have to say the same. Yesterday was my first time and i also sleeved ATX 24pin connector +3 wires from power on button at Cosmos S and it took me 2,5h then i sleeved my Scythe front panel. My fingers hurt but come on where's sth more to sleeve ;D
MalikA :D:D:D
You just say 2,5 hours, because you want to 0wn dylskee with his 3 hour report :D:D:D
No i'm not. I had to do everything before my girfriend come and clean my room to that time so i was in a hurry :D but his first time looks better than mine. (Photo later)
Well I'm sure it looks better than the rainbow affect before you sleeved it. I just had to go get more heat shrink, I ran out already!
Just did a SATA cable.......
http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/5396/img6847k.th.jpg
Got my PC almost done. Just need to make a custom SATA power cable for the drives....
Didn't like how the 24 pin turned out the 1st time so I redid it...
Any ideas on how to make the area going into the power supply a bit nicer looking?

PC-V1000 is an amazing case for cable management if you aren't afraid to drill a few holes in the thing. Drill a hole in the motherboard tray right where the 24-pin connector is. And one right above it for the videocard.
Ferhan, first seen your works at harwareluxx - truly sleeving pron  nice job!

Yeah, could be better if there wouldn't be any 3 pin cable for Cosmos..
Thanks Dylskee ;)
Man, I've been using TechFlex PET's and looking all your MDPC-X sleeves, makes me want to scrap mine! Lol. But just to clarify I'm not going crazy, my cart was like $120... thats correct?
guys, your sleeving is AWESOME! After a while i will also sleeve my PSU and sata cables, but before i should buy good PSU instead of my Chieftec and order sleeving kit from Nils. :) DAMN I CANT WAIT! :D I dream about white and black sleeve...
Ok, how do you sleeve the USB, Fire Wire and Audio cables from the TJ07? I can't see how the connector comes apart on these things.
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/45/picture167c.jpg
There's a little 'tab' of plastic on the connector that needs to be lifted up, eg. with a pin or very small screwdriver. If you look on the 'back' of the connector, gently wedge the implement of your choice just above the bit of metal pin that you can see. The plastic flap should lift up and you can pull out the wire. You have to do this for every pin on the connector.
It´s sunday and i´ve said on sunday pictures will come :D

http://www.abload.de/img/dsc032875lq8.jpg
fhantastic, beautiful photos!
another option, depending on what kind of sleeving/and heatshrink you're using is...its perfectly possible to just wiggle it right over top without removing *might have to shave the edges a bit, but*
I actually used that trick on the SATA cables. I cut the sleeving extra long and after getting it on the cable I trimmed it up with scissors and it turned out pretty well. I might try the same trick with the USBs too, depends on how ambitious I feel at the time. :D
I'm about to sleeve my video card power cables, and I wanted to glance at a few examples to see how others did it. In the process, I thought I'd take a look at MDPC to see some really clean ones. What I saw upset me:
http://www.million-dollar-pc.com/gal...rderbox-15.jpg
http://www.million-dollar-pc.com/gal...rderbox-14.jpg
How the heck did Charles do that? What kind of shrink can you get to make a seamless transition from the cable to OVER the connector like that? And where do I get some? Now I'll never be satisfied with anything I do, because I'll never be as good as Charles, lol.
Seriously though, where can I find some shrink like that? I LOVE the way that turned out. I also noticed that in the past he used to sleeve each of the video card wires individually, but for this build he bundled them into one. I think it came out much cleaner and since I'm not on water yet, I need as little air restriction as possible.
So really I'm asking Charles but if anyone else has some insight they can offer I'd really appreciate it. What size sleeving & shrink should I be buying (from MDPC-X, of course) in order to pull this look off? I'm initially thinking I need the "SATA" sets, but I'm not sure.
I have a different idea with the connectors themselves (I'm trying to come up with a way to make it look like one big connector and one medium-sized wire), but I want to make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot at any step along the way.
Thanks!
I asked Nils the same question lol.
It's SATA sleeve, Nils isn't sure if he stretched the sata shrink or used the jumbo shrink, either would work though ;)
Hey Jason,
It's the Large shrink on SATA sleeve... just a bit of trial and error Mate.
I wanted to be sure the wires in Daniel's machine didn't move or flop around - even after being transported half way around the planet!
I found that you could put the shrink in place, heat it and then bend it to the shape you wanted before it cooled and hardened. Obviously it took a bit of messing with to get it looking right... as I recall, it's actually two layers of shrink - one to grip the sleeve to the cable and the other to mold the outer shape.
With this method, the wires are held firmly in place...
Hope that helps. :)
Thanks for the rapid help Charles! I was actually looking at it before and suspecting two layers of shrink.
Back to work!
Any chance I could make the same thing work with the 8-pin cables?
Having stripped my HAF down today, to make way for my new build http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=232515
I have the Enermax Rev 1050w psu, and am planning on individually sleeving all the cables. The PCI-e cables that come directly out are 6 + 2, what is the best way to hide the 2 unwanted cables? I can see removing the connectors, but one is still going to have too much cable.
With the modular 6+2, is it OK to just remove the 2 extra wires?
Next up is the front audio connector, only need the HD part, so once again is it OK to remove the non HD connector?
Perfect sleeve mate. Top job.
Jup aka "stun me up before you go go" :D:D:D
Hi guys :D
-----
@ aka_GK
wonderful job!
thanks guys :D
What kind of symptoms would I experience if I would have plugged the wrong pins on my 24pin atx cable. Im experiencing random crashes and my Maximus formula flashes it's diagnostics leds...or rather leaves the dram led glowing red etc. I't all started when my Corsair HX1000 had 2 wires coming off from the pins on the 24pin line on their own  Not what you'd expect to see from 200€ powersupply.

Yes it works good :)
Go for it :D
hmm, this sleeving looks alot like Bentley Harris Expando PT Plus which is really good non-fray sleeving. Am i wrong or who makes this murdermod sleeving.
