It is not even noisy. I think I got the cooler at tiger direct or Zip Zoom fly for around $25

I already order the OCZ XTC cooler but the brackets won't fit with my vidcard. Luckily I can sell it to a friend of mine for the retail price. When I'm buying the Corsair memory there will also be the airflow fan included and I want to use it for the memory ofcourse. But maybe I can mount the 80mm fan on the D-Tek CPU block. I also want to remove the blue Asus shield but how did you do that because I read it is kinda hard to remove?!?

I never removed my blue ASUS shield. I don't think it is worth it. With the smaller 40mm fans 60% of the fans that are over the ahield are NOT blocked by the shield, and I have no stability issues. I wan't to maintain some sort of resale value to this board when upgrade time comes around.
With regard to the NB voltage. Your board performs almost exactly the same as mine, since I was running 1.57v on the NB when I had the CPU running 3.8ghz (450x8.5) Moving up the othe 9x multi required a bump to 1.61v and setting In required 1.65v
Higher multiplyers mean faster CPU speeds which mean more thruput which mean more stress on the NB which means more Vnb to keep things stable. I would bet that it is your 1600mhz Platinums that are the source of your headaches. My system was a nightmare with them, but it has been awesome since the Reapers. Not one lock up or BSOD in well over a month. Not to mention, it passes all the stress tests, at least for as long as I care to run them. I went as long as 6 hours on prime 95, and MANY people will say that if you don't go for 12 or 24 hours, then you don't know for sure. Technically, they may be right, but when the test runs for 6 hours and the computer plays games, surfs the net, and burns DVD's without crashing any apps, hten it is good enough for me. I see no reason to beat up my equipment any longer than that.
Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the fans mounted on the NB? I was thinking to get myself a Antec Coolspot when I can't find any 40mm or 60mm fans.
The thing I still don't get is why I need such tremendous amount of vcore to get the E8400 stable?!? Do you have any idea or is just a bad batch? That's something I didn't really expect and I'm almost inclined to sell the bastard and get me a E8500 / E8600. However, I was planning such an upgrade somewhere in the beginning of next year when Nehalem is released and prices would drop.
I've settled for 500 fsb with 1600 mem for now as it only needs fairly low voltages even with 4x1GB and 1N, and still gives pretty good bandwidth results in Everest.

Thanks for all the info dude. I just don't seem te get it why I need so much voltage on all settings (CPU, NB and DRAM) to get things stable at 4Ghz. :shrug: If I lower one of them my system will not boot or will crash during Windows startup. I really hope it has nothing to do with the board since I don't want to disassemble my whole comp. again!!!!

Took me a while to get it stable and keep the voltages low.
With the voltages set as they are now, but with 1.80V set for DRAM, I tested the mem with a 400fsb and an 8 multi on the CPU. I tested the sticks separately, one by one at 2N and went through all of the CLK skews for that dimm, testing and taking notes to see which ones seemed the strongest.
Before finding the right skews, I found I was increasing voltages with little or no gains in stability :(

Its nothing to do with one brand Vs another, its to do with the IC's used, their binning and how to tune the board to suit them. I hope the modules did not run spec as RMAing just because the modules failed to overclock as high as you wanted costs OCZ a lot of money.Quote:

I believe what's important is in how one feels about it at the outset. PITA is relative in this regard. I have spent quite a few hours reading about watercooling and I enjoy customizing and building the various setups. In this regard it is more of a hobby which is what this forum is all about. It is not hard to put together a good watercooling setup and you can make it as complex as you want. There are good sticky reads in the liquid cooling section of the forum. If you have specific questions don't hesitate to ask. People on this forum are more than willing to help.Quote:

Thanks for the input. I have read that the PLL is a variable that manipulates the SB and that it should not be adjusted??? Also when you test setting do you go through all possible comination adjusting one varible at a time? I am running at 3.2gHz right now with 400 FSB Ram 400, 1600 with all on auto. So from here I guess its FSB 425, is there a ratio for vFSB to vNB that one can use or do you simple raise one then adjust the other until you are stable.
Yep, you got that right. Adjust one setting at a time and retest is the best method but it can take a lot of time. For some people this is more a PITA then installing some watercooling (ask me!!!!). I've trying to get this CPU stable now for three weeks and its starting to show some results now. However others will manage a stable and decent overclock in a few hours or days which was the case with my previous comp. It all depends on what hardware is used and even then not two pieces of hardware are the same. Hence it is hard if not impossible to give some numbers which also apply to your hardware setup.Quote:

nomore memory error with memest 2.01 but always some random freeze during stability test !!
For exemple , i make a first Cpu stability test during 4 hours without any problem . The following day I do again exaclty the same test and my computer freeze 20 minutes later l !

Aquike question. What is the purpose of the SuperPi test and what do you look for after each settings change?
SuperPi testing for me has been helpful in terms of finding stability. I have found this board very touchy with a quad core and 4GB ram. Mainly it has been the ram settings that have been the most headache for me. I have found that adjusting clock skew has been helpful for me in achieving stability. If I was at an unstable setting, SuperPi would crash the system even if Prime95 would not error.

Get one or two small fans (the size of the fans Corsair uses for its 3-fan RAM add-on) and with a silicone gun put a few drops on the ASUS logo and press the fan(s) onto it. Leave the PC a few hours off (so that the silicone gets concrete) and... voila !!!! You have a pretty effective cooling system for the P5E3's heat sensitive NB chip... :)

I have my system running now at 400fsb 333NB strap (8 multiplier) which put my memory at 1601MHz. I jumped it up to 425 and the memory went to 1700MHz. I will post my setting a little later as I want to ask the question about the fsb/dram ratio, it is set to 1:2 per CPU-Z. How does one go about changing this? As I increase the FSB I do not want to overclock the memory to far.

I've also noticed that the minimum values in the BIOS are just like the Auto setting.
Setting 1.10V for FSB, 1.25V for NB. does not fix the values, they will still change/increase as you overclock (checked with a multimeter)
The BIOS does not show the ratio, instead it gives DDR3 speeds. In the AI Tweaker section, depending on the FSB Strap setting in the BIOS, you will have different memory speeds to choose from under the setting "DRAM Frequency"Quote:

I'm not sure I want to test P95 over night at 450 my core temps are getting close to the limits and I would like to keep my CPU for awhile.

This board really is a tough nut to crack. Been playing around with it yesterday and running at 8x450 right now on my Q9450 and I can run 3dmark 06 and 3dmark vantage without any problems but as soon as I run memtest in windows or start up OCCT I get errors within 1 minute.
increasing Vcore does not do a thing so it must be my RAM. Also because memtest gives errors before it reaches 1% of the test.
Silly thing is that the RAM is running well below specs. I got the OCZ PC3-10666 ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth 2x2Gb kit which should be able to handle 1333Mhz 6-5-5-20 timings at 1,8v and I have it now at 1200Mhz 6-6-5-20 (2T) and it fails.
Tried to increase NB voltage but no effect. What do you guys think I should look for in solving this?
try playing around with the finer memory timings. even on auto one of them could be too tight for your ram.Quote:

I'm now at 8x399 with most options set to AUTO and it seems to work ok. Just been gaming for an hour and S-pi also ran ok. As soon as I put the FSB to 400 windows hangs just before getting to desktop (Vista x64) to see if the AUTO trick would show some more magic I raised the FSB to 451 but then it crashes just as soon as you see the windows vista logo which is right before desktop. Eppikk perhaps you can post your settings (or are they here somewhere already?) perhaps some pics. I'm also interested in CPU and NB skew. Tony from OCZ says to keep them around 300ps (CPU) and 200pc (NB) when between 400 and 500 FSB.
what prog can i use to check the voltage settings at AUTO? Perhaps I can check and compare settings between the various auto settings.
Perhaps I should just sell my Q9450 and buy a E8600 and let it rip.
Pislink's settings worked well for me but tweaked for my own RAM of course. before that i also ciouldnt get 450MHz stable no matter what I did to Vnb.Quote:

MY second board was awsome, no need to adjusting cpu or nb or ram ps delays or anything, i went straight to 8x490FSB with 1.41vcore and 1.71vNB, ram at 1.91v, sb at 1.2v, FSB at 1.28v, GTL at 0.67/0.67 for cpu and 0.67 also for NB.
vcore optimizer was set for performance and ram was 1N @ 1500Mhz @ 7-7-7-20 (OCZ Platinum 1333Mhz)
That board went RMA for no reason...it just lit up the onboard yellow power led but it wouldnt boot (happened twice but the second time it did not boot, the first time i just took it out of the case and let it outside and wen i came home it was on...eh..) I had changed it with the other one cuz i found out it was revision 2
Tough my first board endured WAY higher voltages for Longer time periods, and its still pumpin' tough its hard to get it stable at 450FSB (cuz the CPU gets myghty hot, aparently my Zalman 9700 is better than the TR Ultra 120 xtreme...i need to lap it and get a second fan...even tough i have a 110CFM fan on it :confused:)
My PLL for FSB450 24/7 is 1.6~~1.66v and for the 490FSB run i sued 1.76v (high i know :up:)

Do not be fooled by the 1.25V NB setting, even I got suckered by this one, 1.25V = Auto which is anything as high as 1.6V at 500fsb.
Be sure to measure your boards with a meter, the first setting that actually works for me is 1.27V...Asus strikes again ;)
Can anyone tell me how to downgrade the bios version on this board? I installed the 0505 but my computer became extremely unstable randomly restarting. When i had the 0401 i never had this kind of problem, it was working perfectly fine right before i installed the 0505, besides that i had to increase the cpu voltage after upgrading since it would freeze at 1.09v. I tried using the EZ flash but it tells me that the version is older and it wont let me flash it with that one. Then i used afudos and it says the same thing, that the bios is too old.
Also, may anyone tell me where to find an updated express gate. I cant find it in the asus download section.

used the flash tool from koda to switch back to 0402 and could boot into windows... even on higher FSB. Only problem was that windows would hang after 5 sec. Changed all settings back to stock but then windows would not boot anymore. Yikes.. I have now flashed the BIOS all the way back to the 1.51 and am now on 8x399. Gonna check how stable it is and if I can get higher from here.
It just shows the "ASUS Express Gate Installer V1.2.8.0 for Windows XP & 64bit XP & 32/64bit Vista" which is a whole installation and it installs on the hard drive. I cant find the .dfi image which is the one the express gate updater utility asks for.Quote:

Can anyone maybe send me his OC profile so I can try to load that? I can't get my system over 399FSB. I've been able to run 3dmarks at 8x450 when I just started clocking the board but I can't get these settings back in any way.
If there's anyone here with approx. these settings let me know if you are willing to send it to me. No matter what I try.. auto settings, high voltages, medium voltages etc. etc. I can't get in windows from 400FSB up. The system just hangs as soon as the Vista Logo animation starts. you'd say my cpu has a wall but I have run it at 8x450 so I guess it's capable of doing it.
Otherwise I'll just get rid of the Q9450 and get me a E8600.

But i still have some freeze problem when i use windows XP but not Vista ( in dualboot ) . I think that this problem is probably due to the change of motherboard ( from P5Kdeluxe to P5e3premium ) without doing a new installation of XP but only the licence number because i would have too many program to reinstall .:D
say any new beta bios's for the board ? its been some time since last one . whase hopping for a new one where we can push fsb even more :D
Sorry dude, can't help ya there I think since I'm stuck with a dual core. This board is a real :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: to overclock even with a dual core, so I feel your pain. Here are some 3D runs at 490FSB. I changed the mem timings and started overclocking the videocard core/mem by 10mhz each time. All of my runs are on air. Next will be running this setup in my R22 Chiller. I need to get me an E8600 which would run great with these G.Skills.

seeing this I'd like to know what fsb you can boot on dual channel and lets say air on both cpu's and nb. I'm at 636, but on water for cpu. Did you tested that ?
Here's a link to download my P5E3 Premium BIOS 0505 Q9450 Overclock Profiles if anyone wants to load them and either see my settings and/or try them out with their 45NM QUAD. This is much easier than listing all your BIOS setttings every time.
If you want to just look at the settings but not use them then all you have to do is save the settings you have now in the Standard Profile Manager~ Profile 1, then load my profile and take a look, if you do not like it just go back to Profile Manager~Profile 1 and load your profile back.
It seems I found the cause of my FSB limitation but I'm still testing. I can play games at 8x399 but anything above that would just freeze up windows just before entering my desktop (when the Vista logo animation is played). Yesterday I rebooted the system and I still had my headset on. At the moment the Vista logo appears a sound is played and when I was booting with settings >400 FSB my system would hang and often produce a noise from the headset. At that moment it struck me... it must be my soundcard which is giving an IRQ conflict or something. This morning I removed my X-fi card from the PCI slot above the videocard slot and to do some testing I hooked up my old 36Gb raptor instead of my 150Gb raptors in RAID0. It has XP x64 installed so I booted and removed the SB drivers from it as well. Rebooted with 8x450 and went into windows straight away. S-pi was no problem but when opening the NVmonitor my pc rebooted. Increased the Vcore a bit and the other voltages as well. Then I found my RAM was not 100% stable either as memtest would give a couple of errors. Loosened my timings slightly and now the mem seems stable (a couple of runs of test 5 in memtest86+ usually is a good indicator)
I just finished a 3Dmark 2006 run which produced just over 16k with my HD4870 at stock speeds and my Q9450 at 3,6Ghz. Now I'm up for some real testing like prime/OCCT or Intel Burn test :)
Still.... that something like a plugged in sound card can cause this effect. It might be a bit early to say for sure as I haven't tried my RAID setup with Vista x64 but it seems like the soundcard was holding the board back all the time. Now first get things 100% stable at 8x450 on XP and then try Vista.
