Yes but Vista 32 and 64 sucks according to the droves of folks removing it from their systems.
Printable View
And according to one of my stupid drunk neighbors the sky is multicolored.
And it doesn´t. Vista is the best Windows OS I have owned. And it´s fast. You shouldn´t base your opinion in others opinion, even if they are important reviewers. They are just for reference. Try it, tweak it, if you like it, good for you, if not, remove it. If tons of folks have removed it, maybe they don´t know how to tweak it properly, or maybe... do you remember XP in the beginning?
how does the 3870 compare to the 8800 GTS 640 ?
I might go watercooling and still have a maze 4 gpu that doesnt fit the gts:rolleyes:
If I tweak Vista the way I want it to be responsive on my system I will be left over with a slightly more visual XP... sorry but even with tweaks Vista isn't as responsive as XP for the stuff I do (and that's not alone gaming). Ofcourse we are comparing running an old OS on a new rig vs a new OS on a new rig... For me though Vista pushes too hard on HD and reducing overal response in that way... sorry but most of my clients only have 2 gigs wich to me seems the very bare minimum to run this visual enhanced OS...
And do we need all that mumbo jumbo ? if Win98 was still running all my games and hardware stable I would have stick to that anyway... XP and XP64 have been very good to me from day one... I've installed different versions of Vista and too me it's too rough on the hardware, out of the box this is.... and Blimey 12Gb install, bit over the top to me compared to 4 gigs for a decent XP install....install SP1 and you will need even more pffffff...
I'm eagerly awaiting SP3 for XP and will slipstream that one onto the install cd...
Eh, no. Vista is faster than XP in Crysis, that´s all... re-read my post please.
Bolded the most important thing. BTW this is an ATI thread, and ONTOPIC the only thing that Vista has to do here is that in Crysis is faster than XP :p:
Now liking my 3870 and WinXp with most of SP3 (beta) installed.

Few Fixs :
Catalyst 7.12
• Crysis: Momentary corruption is no longer noticed when playing the game.
Further details can be found in topic number 737-31094
• Crysis: The ice level is no longer too bright which was making the game nonplayable.
Further details can be found in topic number 737-31104
I hope CF in crysis realy works or else ....................

I have been contacting ATI for some things... they have said that they will be out hopefully today or tomorrow. If not, in the new year.

Sorry I missed this reply.
According to one of my hopelessly blind friends, AMD X2 is still light years better than Intel's Core 2 Duo. Do I have to downgrade to find out if that is true?
Now, if Vista came with a 30 day money back guaranty, I'd do as you suggest. But it too over priced for a "Try it you might like" scenario as you said. Sorry;) I can't see paying that much for it to end up sitting on a shelf.
I do remember XP and had just moved from Win2K. Then as now, I waited for SP1 before I even touched it. After SP1 when I did try it, I had no problems, it was faster than 2K and yada yada. So no, I don't see a Parallel.
As PC World even picked it as the Biggest disappointment of 2007, how I feel is not without Merritt LOL! Though I've not tweaked it, I have played with it.
Can you stop with OT bantering, this is the 3870 thread. Thanks.
Bought one today. A Sapphire because that was the only brand available, in the only shop that has them in my town (quite a few also), while they're out of stock (all brands) at komplett.nl (where i would have bought), and 5 euro's cheaper. Payed €199.95.
Gives me something to play with on my Maximus while waiting for the 3870X2, so now i don't really care anymore how long that will be.

No and you're not welcomed, LOL! Shouldn't that be you guys, people or etc..?
Since I'm not running DirectX 10.1 that my 3870 supports, what OS is used very On Topic. Now if you try and get a topic back on topic (even when it is not off), you look like jerk  by picking out one poster while at least 4 are off topic;)
I saw some news about it on one of the MSN/MSFN. Getting 10.1 support for my 3870 while still using WinXP would give me Zero reason to even think about getting Vista.
Last review I saw showed a 3870 doing pretty good with 10/.1. Beta tested by some guy.
Sure the OS has a lot to do with it.Quote:
DirectX 10.1 in Windows Vista SP1 – The Evolution - Under the hood
Posted by xper on 31 Oct 2007
As Windows Vista brought to the table the exclusive DirectX 10, the first service pack for the operating system will evolve Microsoft's graphics technology to version 10.1. DirectX 10.1 is already available to over 12,000 testers via the first beta of Vista Service Pack 1, concomitantly with the official release of Build 6001.16659. Although the testing milestones of Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP SP3 Beta, are officially limited in terms of access, a hack is available designed to permit the download of Windows Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft, and simultaneously test drive DirectX 10.1.
However, Vista users have to understand that DirectX 10.1, as well as DirectX 10 is a technology intimately connected with the underlying graphics card, such as the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series. According to an AMD whitepaper focused on the implementation of DirectX 10.1 in the ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series, the latest application programming interface from Microsoft, manages to "unlock the state of the art in GPU technology."
@ mascaras, i thought COD4 caps at 91fps, did you do something in the comand line?... or is it only multiplayer that caps @ 91? if you even know... :p:
Single player does not have any cap.
Thanks, that would explain it then
Do you truly need a car, a computer, Mp3 player, a sexlife, a phone or even a mobilephone ?:ROTF:
We dont need new technology at all, I wished amd and Microsoft stopped their business and people went with apple and Linux.
I just had coffe with some old folks, they growed up before TV, before radio and almost before cars was on the streets, they still dont own a computer.
For me the 3800 series seems like a good buy and the new x2 card seems like a really nice upgrade.
If the price is right.
Have had my cards since release date but been to busy playing so I havent got around to some benching before yesterday evening. Installed Vista 32 on a new disk, turned up the "volume" a little bit and voila.

No tweaking of disk whatsoever and no LOD - just bumped the MHz up to where I believed it belonged and gogogo.
Just as FX-57, Intel X6800 and FX60 were bragged about as being worth every penny when they sold for even more LOL! That's the bad news, the good news is that any $279 Q6600 can reach that speed and much faster. That puts the bottleneck back on the video card/s.
Anyway, I like my 3870 and can't wait to add another. I'm absolutely hoping that Direct X 10.1 is ported to WinXP so I can get the most out of my card without having to downgraded to Vista.
Anyone in vista trying to run crysis with 2gb? Im getting some crazy fps drops randomly. When i minimize it will say like 1.9gb used. I get avg of about 30fps, but it gets nearly unplayable when this starts. My other 2 gigs should be here tomarrow. Should that fix it?
I didn't try it in Vista yet. But yes, in Vista with the superfetch, 2 GB is a minimum, you should have 4. In your case it starts to use the paging file already.
But you have installed all performance patches, have you.
no? :(
If you don't mind do you have a link? :)

But after reading all the issues with Vistax64, crysis, and especially Gears OF war..im sorry but ati scared me off..going to stay on the nvidia bandwagon for now..Hopefully the X2 brings me back.
I never seen nor heard any issues with crysis, Vista 64 (there were even reviews using Vista 64) and gears of war.
I find that kind of post odd when G80 had major issues with just vista along with other games list CS:S, HL2 Ep1 (fog issues) etc when it was released and yet people still waited out until those issues were fixed. I don't recall them staying away or mass exiting

Hey guys!
Is CrossfireX (2+ cards) working with current drivers?
hey guys, just wanted to confirm the Swiftech MCW60 works on the 3870's right?
Hey there,
I take great interest in this thread. I just purchased a Diamond 3870 and Sapphire 3850 (512MB version) and will try to put forth some Benchmarks with the 3870 in master and the 3850 secondary in some games. Gonna try Crysis, Bioshock, COD4 and Oblivion (if I can) for comparison. I'll be running the benchmarks with the CPU at 3.6 Ghz.
I'm interested in seeing Crysis difference in the two OSes that I have. I also have an HIS Turbo 3850 512MB on the way and hopefully can bench that in this config (replacing either 3870 or 3850).
Keep up the good work guyz, and cheers.

Sapphire to launch Radeon HD 3850 with 1GiB frame buffer. AGP already available.
Sapphire is already shipping an AGP-based version of the Radeon HD 3850 SKU, proclaiming it to be the world's fastest AGP solution.....probably.
http://aycu12.webshots.com/image/411...5178953_rs.jpg
Using the tried-and-trusted Rialto bridging chip as the enabler for the AGP conduit on the PCIe-based DX10.1-supporting architecture, the card opens up the possibility of upgrading your old AGP system's graphics without having to invest in a new motherboard and, possibly, RAM and CPU.
The card clocks in a 700MHz core and 1700MHz memory, packs in a healthy (and needed) 512MiB frame buffer and, as per the reference design, utilises a single-slot cooler.
http://aycu40.webshots.com/image/408...0362602_rs.jpg
Released later on this month, Sapphire will be retailing a PCIe-based Radeon HD 3850 with a whopping 1GiB frame buffer.
We can see the point in adding extra on-board memory to cope with games that utilise larger textures, thereby decreasing the need to run back to system memory on a regular basis, but 1GiB does seem overkill for what amounts to a budget card. Then again, with memory prices at ridiculously low levels, Sapphire shouldn't charge a huge premium for this part over other models in its HD 3850 range.
Stay tuned for reviews on both models, folks.

Just the ATI uninstall method. Works fine.

I have this card since December and right away installed Cat 7.12 and no reason to uninstall it yet. Why? Why uninstall 7.12? It's the latest. What problems do you have then?
With regard to your problem, came across this link on another page here at XS and believe it will be of help. Good luck!

Rob
Doesn't that ATI forum have a :banana::banana::banana: interface with that MUCH too narrow centered frame with scrollbar at the bottom of the frame instead of the bottom of the browser! :shakes:  Ever since that forum exists it is that way. Btw, on day one i registered, but never received a confirmation email to validate the account, so i could never use it. New account impossible with the same email address. And i can't complain about this without first logging in.
First month it really didn't look very useful forum anyway, i decided to never bother about it.
MY site?
What makes you think i'd shoot you for that, Rob?
My point is i wanted to read that post but it is só stretched by the images that it is IMPOSSIBLE to read the text without scrolling down to the frame's scrollbar every single time after reading a sentence to the end, which i gave up after two or three.
Not your fault, Rob.
someone tryed to run DIRT on a HD3850 256mb? I'm getting a really poor performance at 800x600 medium!?
I noticed with the new 7.12 drivers, DiRT doesn't work right. It does with the 7.11's though.
With the 7.12 drivers, the cards won't clock up to 3d mode. They stay in 2d. Atleast thats what happens to me.
thx, I fix that overclocking the card, so the clock stay at 750mhz in 2d and 3d, I played the game and when you are alone the framerate is good, in the races with more cars the framerate get a lot lower...
is normal the gpu use around 50% during the game?
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4792/gpuuseae7.jpg
That happens when i set the clocks like that too. Try the new 8.1 drivers, those should fix it. They were just released
with the new driver the game runs better.. but still, I think this is a bit strange, the first part I was playing rally, with very good framerates (only one car on the screen), the second part when the gpu use is lower I was playing the races with more cars on the screen and I really can feel the framerate going down... still, is a lot better, but I don know, maybe my cpu is limiting? (brisbane @ 2600mhz), I'm playing at 1024x768 custom (high with AA disable)
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/1775/gpuusegm5.jpg
you should get crazy frames at 1024x768, but these drivers still need a little more work before i would say they are perfect
I have DiRT, it played perfect with the 7.11 drivers, 7.12 it wasn't playable, i havn't tried playing it yet since i installed the 8.1.
I'd like to see some more X-fire reviews. Has ATi tweaked their drivers to allow most games to utilize Xfire? 2900pro are screaming for my bx2
guys, just wanted to now what are your top 3dmark06 stable freqs on the GPU, on stock voltage?
I'm asking cause, even after flashing a new BIOS (successfully), even though it doesn't block instantly after putting the GPU on 862+MHz, I it isn't 3dmark06 stable at 864+MHz, it just crashes after some time. (on stock vcore, of course)
EDIT: temps don't ever go above 33-34C according to Rivatuner...
I do 3Dmark06 at 860/1200.
Sounds like your hitting the 860/870 wall on the stock bios. To get past it, you have to flash the card to the new bios.
As i posted HERE, 860/1306. Which however is not a guarantee for gaming stability.
The stock bios of this card is known stable up to 862 to be precise. I don't know if the new revisions of the card are sold with a new bios.
as I said: 'even after flashing a new BIOS (successfully)' I get these freqs, but it is now easier for me, it seems my card is working normally, thnx guys ;)
Oh sorry, you did falsh the bios. Missed that :slap:
