Yea, we lost app 100K a day with Rammie moving but thats life.
The work still gets done and we get a bigger challenge!;)

I was thinking about the following for a sub-$500 quad crunching rig. The only things missing are a cpu f/hs and a case. But I've got stock fans I could use and the case should be something creative. I don't know if I'm going to do it, but I'd like to hear ideas and suggestions. Let me know if you think it should go in it's own thread.

It only puts out 400watts, but that's more than enough for Q6600 at 3ghz and 2 gig of ram. Plus, no hard drive. The whole package should be able to fit into a large shoe box.
and I'd be curious to know how long a 24/7 cruncher would run before it hits the multiple writes limit on the flash.
I know this probably doesn't fit the standard "quality" PSU, but I use them exclusively.[40+ applications] And yes they will run a quad 24/7:D
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182087
I agree with that statement. Look at this list of power supplies though.... All are in computers that I put together and all but one are running 24/7. Not all of the computers are mine and one isn't crunching due to very, very slow dial up.
4 - PC P&C (one 425 that's ~ 4 years old, one 610, and two 750's) <crunching
2 - PC P&C 470's
1 - Enermax Noisetaker II 600 watt <crunching
2 - ??? that are ~300 watts (originally came in Dell computers!) <crunching
I doubt that many people would think of the power supplies that come in Dell computers when they think of quality power supplies, but those two have been crunching 24/7 for ~18 months. They were free so I used them with the intention of buying better power supplies later.... Both are powering P4's - one at 3.4GHz and one at 3.8GHz. They still work so I haven't replaced them.
Thanks for the input everyone.
I would also be interested in knowing about any multiple write limits.
Here's what I got from Wikipedia
From Wikipedia Flash Memory entryQuote:
Another limitation is that flash memory has a finite number of erase-write cycles (most commercially available flash products are guaranteed to withstand 100,000 write-erase-cycles for block 0, and no guarantees for other blocks[citation needed]). This effect is partially offset by some chip firmware or file system drivers by counting the writes and dynamically remapping the blocks in order to spread the write operations between the sectors; this technique is called wear levelling. Another mechanism is to perform write verification and remapping to spare sectors in case of write failure, which is named bad block management (BBM). With these mechanisms in place, some industry analysts[1] have calculated that flash memory can be written to at full speed continuously for 51 years before exceeding its write endurance, even if such writes frequently cause the entire memory to be overwritten. This figure (51 years) involved a worst-case scenario using specific data parameters and should not be confused with a particular "shelf life" for a flash memory device. The bottom line is that a typical user using a commercial device, such as a camera, with a flash drive will probably not wear out the memory for the effective life of the camera. However, it - like any other hardware component - can fail. Anyone using flash memory (and any other medium) for critical data would be well advised to backup the data to another device (preferably of a different medium). Many have found it very fast and reliable for 'read-only' operating systems such as thin clients and routers.
So depending on what safeguards the manufacturer has built into the package, worst case scenario should be an approximate life of 51 years under continuous use.
Not a good day today :(
Twilight.... 51 years is a bit mroe than our uses. 51 years is somone who takes pictures (1 write operation ??)
For a OS USB you may be talking about many many more... Have a look at how many write operations you hardrive makes while running WCG and damn all else.
or am I talkin crap!!!

Ouch.
Feeling the loss of RAMMIE I see :(
That's a few days in a row...we need to pick it up now.
sorry team, I was busy with the job and the new house.. didnt realise one of my power outlet was tripped and took my 4 quads down with it. My fault !!
Only just saw RAMMIE's leaving thread, not good news, so I OC'ed the clovers a bit more. I left them running at just the BSEL mod speed 333x9-3GHz, kicked it up to 370x9=3.33GHz, another 2.64GHz for the team.
I upped my Qx6700 to 3.4, doesn't want to boot @ 3.6 and don't want to fight with the 680i right now.
I am getting a new 680i and will flash to P31, see what I can get for an OC on that.
Will hopefully have my 3220 up again, sometime by the end of the month.
That will add 4 cores, and if I can decent air cooler, will push for over 3Hz.

Slow Death :shakes:
Moving this from PD-820 stock clocked to hopefully OCed e6600 and adding an e2140 this weekend. It's no quad, but it's my first C2D and I'm pretty sure that it'll do something...
I bumped the quad to 3.6 and added my work lappy (Pentium M 2ghz). That's almost 20ghz crunching. Yesterday I had my first 15K day since August.

Ouch! This hurts.....
We'll get them Don..It's a battle but we'll win this one.
getting rumors of some new 45nm parts that might be available to me in a week or so that should make a difference.;)
We've also been taking a huge hit on the HCC work units when run on any 8 core machine.
There is a problem with "page faults" and they are seeing it now from more people than just me reporting it.
I would suggest to anyone running HCC that you look VERY carefully at the timeframes your machine is doing the work units. VERY carefully!!!!!!
So far it seems( and keep in mind that I am not a software guy) that when more than one HCC WU is run at a time there are issues.
What I do know for fact is that mesh's clover was taking a 6000 point a day hit by running HCC and I have moved it back to FAAH.
Dave , this is ONLY on 8 core machines , right?
I think so..BUT a guy posted that his P4 single core got one point an hour.
This is why I'm saying go and check on your WCG page in the results section on valid WU's on machines running HCC and see what your completion times are and how your doing on claimed vs awarded points.
The clover was taking WAY too long to finish these compared to other machines from the data I saw.
Now I'll agree, there are many machines that are faster per core than the clovers, most of the quads are, but lets be realistic, of the 823,000 machines on WCG I'd bet the clovers are up in the top 1% for speed but they were getting absolutely killed in HCC and that flys in the face of what I've seen over the past year doing FAAH WU.
Maybe it is just my newb'ness but I had a lot of HCC "pending" in the last few days...maybe 30% or more...so claimed = 50 or so points and I got nothing for them. Is this a normal thing??
For these HCCs, I went from 4 hours avg, @ 3.4Ghz, now its saying like 8 hours @ same speed on my QX6700........
Think if we drop the HCC and focus on other units, that would be an improvement?
Then again, not working on HCC doesn't accompolish our primary goal?!?!
It needs a fix, that simple..
I know, I'd like to do the Cancer project myself but AIDS is also important to me. It's a judgement call on everyones part.
My thinking is I will concentrate on FAAH till they fix the Cancer project then jump on it with all I have.
Well fold3 and fold5 are both crunching HCC right now. Looks like it was progressing OK until I remote desktoped to them, now they are just sitting atm with the time remaining increasing now  We'll see what happens. For some reason on fold5 it is running an HCC unit due on the 8th while there are four DDDT units due on the 7th it is ignoring right now :eh: Who knows...
Someone may wanna contact DDTUNG, I'd hate for him to waste all that wattage for nothing.
I realise we have been beaten in the last few days...but this is what I like to see:

That's what, four or five days in a row?
The cancer project seems to be working fine here. Credit claimed and granted very close. That's on an E6700 / Vista Ultimate 32, Q6600 / Vista Ultimate 32 (switched to 64 bit today), QX6700 / XP Pro and a couple of P4's with XP Home.
Maybe it will get some tempers up and motivate some new people to join in..
Maybe a post in NEWS:
"XS taking it sideways without lube"
I have faith.
Best group of people I've ever worked with in my 55 years and thats no crap.
UPS says DEC. 4 for e6600 and the e2140 is crunching as we speak. Will borg the 820 when it goes out, and let the owner know about it.
Currently working on a few user reviews for the area above, good looking cheap case=stitches tonight. However, HD3850 goodness is 12 inches away...
Oh, hi! :]
My motherboard isn't dead anymore...which is fantastic! And, I'm getting things stable again. But, my GPU seems to be going downhill now. I think i'm going to pick up a couple of new cards for SLI (G92 GTS), and get back to folding. Since moving, I also had a lot of spare computer parts, and a few more G0 quads, so I'm going to slap those together and let them run.
My internet has been down the past few days, so no results from me. The soonest they can get someone out is Monday :(

Guys/gals, please do not get discouraged, we have come so far and are doing amazing things for our size. We WILL catch them and overtake them so please keep the faith. The group of people on this forum have showed the world that a small dedicated force can not be stopped and it takes fifteen times our number to compete with us. That alone is an accomplishment that any team would be proud of.
XSDC is THE BEST DC TEAM and with time we will be back on top again.
I was thinking the same thing ( even as my spirits sunk, just a bit, at another day behind them ). Just as we slowed just a touch, they have seemed to gain a bit. But we are still but a wee small team doing battle with Goliaths and damn-near besting them, and certainly outdoing many teams bigger than us. We do need to continue to remember this, so as not to let the intensity of our effort waver.
I'm kind of frustrated at my own output, lately. It seems to have been off for a while now. Like maybe 15 to 40K/day. If it is HCC related, well, I changed my Project profile, last night, and am now doing only Prot. and FAAH. Maybe that'll get it.
I still have to wonder. It seems we have lost more than advertised or rather expected.
And I wouldnt suggest doing HPF if youre looking to increase your points output. HPF just plain kneecaps you with its huge quorums. I'd recommend DDT and FAAH if youre interested in maximizing points. Points of course arent everything, so guys gotta do what a guy wants to do. ;)
-SS
Well, I've always kind of just allowed HPF, sort of by default, to run. I have no particular affinity for it or anything. Wasn't aware of its' quorem issues ( don't usually pay much attention to that stuff ). Thanks for telling me.
What I'd like to run is Cancer projects, but don't want to be "knee-capped" ( love that term, Carl :) ) by that project's issues. So until I hear all clear from more than a few, I'm going to stay clear of it. Cancer is what brought me into the crunching worl and I'd love to run a decent Cancer project. Wish they'd get their crap together!
Myself included but I will not let this team down buy running a buggy project. I think with a little time they will get it fixed and hopefully we will teach them about quorum matching to optimize the work units. We are Xtreme and our machines deserve some respect.
I think the output drop is a few things:
Rammies leaving was an instant 100K a day gone.
Then this issue with HCC. Lets face it, cancer is the biggest issue that brings people to DC, myself included and I was all hyped up when they restarted this round. Like most, I don't do a daily comparison of how the machines are doing. I just check the daily totals and with the up and down of the quorum it takes time before you see a trend.
It was having Mesh's machine here that got my attention.
That machine is like a clock, does 25K a day on a 7 day average and watched it drop to 19K running HCC.
It's back on just FAAH now and the averages are going back up.
Now if we have 250 guys losing 6000 a day, you guys do the math..;)
On the HCC thing I found fold3 is taking about 11 hours and fold5 almost 13 to complete :( At least they are running properly knock on wood
I saw you guys getting your asses whooped, so Riptide asked me to come help ya fellas :ROTF:
I have been doing all faah for quite a while. The ship is too big to be making a lot of turns, which has saved me from the problems with the other projects. I would suggest everyone stop running HCC until the bugs are fixed. Unless that happens, we may not be helping the science at all running HCC.
I just put together another Q6600 G0 rig and it will go online over the weekend. That's quad #32. #33 is enroute to OPP and then to me, hopefully arriving some time next week. Also switching another 14 quads from XP Pro to XP Pro 64 over the next couple of weeks. So expect output to go up by 55K by mid December. That is if I don't decide to give myself quad #34 as a Christmas present.:D
DDTUNG:cool:
Over the past month Easynews' daily output has steadily increased. I don't think this is in response to our challenge. More of their users are probably migrating to BOINC. And given the fact that they have close to 6,000 members, that switch will have an impact. Our daily output has been fairly steady the past month, except for that one day when all the HCC units were validated at once. The number of results we are returning is actually higher than a month ago. I think this is partly due to those shorter DDDT units.
You have to remember that we are going up against two teams (Easynews and Team 2ch) with large memberships. Team 2ch now has 5,800 members versus our 750. Size does matter sometimes.:D If we can eventually increase our membership to around 1,000 I think we can beat Easynews on a daily basis with no problem.
I was chatting with my father yesterday about this and although he is running a couple of Mac's at home, I have got him excited enough to maybe join the team also :) I will set it up over the next week or so whenever I get back in to town...so then I just have to work on my brother who also has a few 24/7 PC's working at his place. So only 248 more live members to go :)
If I was not thinking (going to - just a few months away) moving back to the US, I would have snapped up a few more Quads in the last couple of months also...but will have to wait until I know a date before I can get more hardware for my farm :)
I've got a Pentium 540 being replaced by a Q6600 G0 as soon as ClubIT gets it to my door :D
My pc's should be back online tonight.
Bought myself that Christmas present, Quad #34.:D
DDTUNG:cool:
My e6600 should be here tomorrow.
However, heat output from this 3850 is causing me to lose ethernet on this machine, and I dunno when water is coming for it. Parts are half bought, but I need full cover blocks, and I can't make them just yet. I decided to make everything this time-my case is in planks in the dining room waiting for a power drill and some templates to be cut out, and I'm hoping for a 3x120 rad from my wife, but I think it'll end up being a Silencer 750 instead, which I will certainly appreciate...
i am probably changing my e6750 for q6600
Once I get this setup and going, I'm gonna look at what to add next. Still got a 2600 Sempy that needs to be the media center in the house, but its RAM finally upped and died, so it's next in line for upgrades. Cases for these are fun, I may try my hand at making this one's as well...
Dude! Having this quad is freakn great!!! My results in one day have doubled & its awsome. Tonight i will take it out to the shed & should be able to hit a higher clock being its freakn cold in there...lol
I also have to get me e6600 going asap.
I need my Maximus!!....thursday....hurry up!!
Lets see: 34 times 15,000..oops, forgot it was DDT..34 times 18,000=:D
w00t back online and full force.
Wondering if I should get #35 & #36 for New Years.
DDTUNG:cool:
Go for it, Victor!
That's all that I'll have rack room for, without retiring more DXs(down to 10, from 32).:)
