Woah there, a little overly involved there are we? If you really think people will gasp in horror over a videocard reveal to that extent... just ROFL. I guess when you post about AMD being "my employer" and "our company" on other forums you have a bit more emotion than most of us end-users would, however. I've owned many AMD/ATI cards over the years including a 9700 pro, x1800 aiw, x1950gto2, mobile HD2900, radeon 4850, 4870, mobile 5730, 5870, and 7970 just as I have owned many NVidia cards. I buy what works, not what I hope might change ;), and the track record with AMD's products has been pretty hairy for me always. If you had your act together better I would most certainly buy an AMD card, since I don't have any preference but for my experiences shaping them.
YOU UNDERESTIMATE FANBOISM....THEY WILL LITERALLY GET DOWN ON THEIR KNEES CRYING, "NO GOD PLEASE MAKE IT NOT TRUE". Have you seen the :banana::banana::banana: fanboys say in here, how insulted they get when the other teams card is better, the mental gymnastics they use to convince themselves their team is better. So yes, I think people will at the very least gasp in horror. hahah
In the fanboys defense though, its really not their fault....its more linked to Nvidias marketing, like the "Open a can of whoopass" and what-not.
I just want to remind everyone about what countless posts were saying months ago about Volcanic Islands. We were shouted down and accused of being fanboys for not going along with the preposterous rumors (20nm anyone?). Now, those dissenting voices are pretty quiet, yes?
Well people like to dream i guess. If the process aint ready, no amd cards can be made especially big ass ones like this.
But from what i see, its a great card, it has smaller die yet seems to be on par with titan ,has a bad ass 512bit memory interface, 4gb ram, various enhancments.True audio, mantle, is priced really well,no crossfire bridge needed.Whats not to like ?
I wasnt sure ati would even try this, last time they went big and 512bit , they failed HARD.Anyone who calls all this a failure of some sorts, should stop doing so much shrooms.
anyone happen to need 2 7970s with waterblocks? ;D
I just want to remind everyone that this is volcanic islands details thread and not an "I told you so" thread or Fanboy/anti fanboy thread.
True enthusiast appreciate good hardware and competition regardless, and I would like to think Xtremesystems has more of that community and less of the bickering between armchair overclockers.
If the price is right!

Well that's what "I" assumed..
Given that they had just released the dual gpu card at the time, and the new oem cards showing up with the names they had.
I just assumed they would wait it out a bit longer until the next fab process was affordable.
But what happened was that people realized that latency of dual gpu's wasn't adding up to the frame rate shown.
So amd had to work on that, it didn't take them to long to get it a bit better.
Regardless I'm just happy to see them back in the game, like I said before, what I really care about is the price of nvidia cards and there performance.
Specifically in terms of 3d performance and sgssaa, and ao.
Minus af because I dont use that (I use trilinear with a -15 mip and texture bais, looks better to me personally but to jaggy to others, hence why I wanna see sgssaa performance up).
The market gets stagnant at times.
Amd did a good job this time around .
Now only if there cpus were doing as good as there gpus are ;).
A little late though on that one since I've already jumped ship ^^ (or at least I'm about to).
TITAN is a beast and AMD seems to have come close or maybe with driver tweaks surpassed it by a tiny %. Either way nice improvement and glad to see things moving again.
Not necessarily. Amd is learning. The fact that we have heard and seen nothing from Amd as far as high end, does not simply mean there is nothing going on. How many believed Amd would release another card in 2013?
Anything could happen.
AMD need to beat Titan by a clear margin in the normal resolutions 1080p and up. Not eyefinity or 4K. Remember Nvidia more or less had Titan in the pocket 18 months ago but didn't release it because of AMD's lack of performance. If it's to have any chance against Maxwell, it needs to be 20-30% better.
Personally speaking to be only equivalent to Titan at this stage of the game is a joke. Rebranding gone mad.
I think they are doing well with what they have money wise.
AMD is a broke company that is operating on a shoe string budget. This quarter AMD spent 308 million on research and developement compared to a year earlier they spend 345 million(they used to spend like double this in their better years). This was the first time AMD R and D spent less than nvidia which had spent 331 million this quarter. Considering how much more needs to researched at AMD, they would be lucky spending half of that on GPU's. CPU's likely get the lionshare of the R and D as it is simply a bigger industry.
Worse yet even for AMD, they need to cut more. AMD currently has somewhere around 968 million in cash reserves and a whole lot of debt. AMD has said, it needs over a billion to operate. To even keep this figure near a billion possible, AMD has had to sell its texas office for 164 million and its Singapore branch office for 46 million.
Regardless of the above, I would say AMD is probably operating the most efficiently at this point with their R and D budget compared to Nvidia and Intel. They have had years of employee cutting, selling of potential research expenditures and costly assets(foundaries and Imageon) to become the lean waif of a company it is today.
In my opinion, Nvidia and particularly Intel are inefficient. Nvidia is losing lots on Tegra for R and D and Intel is big and bloated.
Nvidia can afford it as they have close to 3 billion in cash and way way less debt than AMD. And Intel is well, Intel.
Hopefully volcanic Islands makes some money for AMD, but they need a home run(not the console deal) to really start making some serious money. And not just be bailing out water out of a sinking ship.
They just need to price it right if it matches. :)
half the price of a GTX 780 and the same performance..I'll take 2 please to go with a nice 4k monitor!!
definitely putting this in my Kaveri build. :yepp::p:
the fact that people keep benching Hawaii versus Maxwell, an architecture and node which is "still a long way away" makes me wonder if people in general know how this industry really works.
The only thig Nvidia can do is release another part in 28nm, so long such part was part of their roadmap, otherwise there's only 22nm (for both companies)
20nm GPU's by Christmas from either company? I doubt it
late Q1 2014?... even then, only the companies and fabs know about this.
so at this point in time I am firm that all we're going to see in this market for the next 5-6 months are are a whole lot more Nvidia binned cards (TI's SE's and what not), and AMD's new offerings.
Hawaii was always 28nm and this was known by anyone who knows a bit about TSMC. if you followed TSMC earnings calls for Q1 2013 and Q2 2013, they were initially talking of 20nm volume production in Q2 2014. In the Q2 2013 call they were vague saying they cannot say about 20nm volume production in Q2 2014.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost...&postcount=133
But I would like to remind you that you were extremely vocal about AMD not having a high end GPU in 2013. and here we are seven months after Titan and four months after the GTX 780 launch and AMD has a solid answer with R9 290X. To remind you the GTX 480 launched 6 months after HD 5870. these gaps in timing happen in the high tech industry.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...-in-2013/page3
this was even after AMD was hinting at the 28nm Volcanic Islands GPU product refresh in Q4 2013
http://www.rage3d.com/articles/hardware/amd_worldcast/
I understand Hawaii is the only completely new GPU while the others are tweaks of existing ASICs. something like what Nvidia did with the GTX 700 series. nonetheless AMD has refereshed their stack with better performance at every price point and look to provide very good competition to Nvidia for the next 9 - 12 months. Also 20nm GPU products are most likely Q3 2014 with real volume being in Q4 2014 as Apple likely eats up the initial wafers for their A8 chips.
I am looking forward to your opinion on R9 290 / R9 290X in a couple of weeks and especially BF4 Mantle in Dec. I believe Nvidia have been out thought by AMD. the sweep of the next gen consoles and the close collaboration with DICE on Mantle are all indicators to an AMD firing on all cylinders and leveraging their console wins to the best effect.
Nice to see the greens keep thread crapping. There is two time periods on this thread before hawai details and after. Before it was 90% greens talking about how great maxwell is going to be, after is 90% greens whining.
AMD for years now have consistently been the first bringing a new arc.
AMD for years now have consistently held the performance crown.
AMD now is about to take the "single GPU" crown
All Nvidia will have left is the best card with a green cover and an army of zealots that only buy nvidia regardless.
Deal with it.
Wow, you sound mad. What has your rant to do with VI?
As i see i go offtopic with this question here.
But are new cards especially R260-270-280 priced lower than their predecessors ?
I have a bad feeling AMD is changing names and adding a new price point only, which would be a shame.
A quick check on newegg reveals that HD7970 can be had for 299$
As you recall, the discussions were all about.....20nm. ;)
Here's what happened:
- AMD's product cycle never had a brand new architecture coming out in 2013, or most of 2014 for that matter.
- NVIDIA pulled forward the launch of their refreshes by several months
- AMD stuck to their product cycle
- The R-series cards you will see on the market may be GCN refreshes, much like NVIDIA's GTX 700-series simply refreshed Kepler while adding two "big" new cards at the top: the TITAN and GTX 780. No new architecture from NV there.
- This approach pretty much benefits everyone since PC gaming technology hasn't progressed all that much (DX11 -> DX11.1 -> DX11.2 are all very minor steps) and the graphics card industry has pretty much matched that pace. This has gradually brought prices down.
2816/176/64/512/4
mostly because most games are made for 8 year old console hardware and graphics quality has improved very little over that time
i was about to say at least amd has dropped the price of the refresh unlike nvidia but i just realized nvidia 760\770 are $100 more than they should be in au where as amd cards are not that far of the us price so maybe nvidia did drop the rrp as well and it just didnt follow through to us?
i would be surprised\disappointed if they havent refreshed them for gcn2.0 and improved efficiency like with the 7790
I would also add to it that more expensive cards are available because the companies have been making GPUs with much larger dies, largely in part because of the margins on professional market they are directed at. A card like Titan would not exist if not for that fact. Nvidia nor AMD wouldn't spend the resources to build a chip that size without a market that can absorb the costs associated with it, and the enthusiast market is simply not big enough in terms of sales numbers to warrant that when compared to the HPC market.
You can trust him but that doesnt make him factually accurate. (im pointing out what it means logically not questioning Sky's source or anything.))
If that's a generic VGA, i'll take 2 please.
One thing though, how come the core is clocked at 1,000mhz. I thought it was supposed to be 800mhz and didn't have a boost like previous cards. Still, i'll have 2 though :)
it has turbo like nvidia, clock is dynamic from 900 to 1000 mhz, but WHERE i can see preorders and price in US shops?
^^
well I found something regarding pricing from NewEgg
This is for the bundled edition, so we could be looking down the $650.00 mark for a vanilla version by SapphireQuote:

$729.99 ... found in source code of the newegg site.. I'll be passing on that, maybe the non bundle version will be more reasonable.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=-1&isNodeId=1
only BF4 preorded is $50, i smell vanilla card price 679 maybe
and that's a great price!, not sure why am I reading hordes of posts on other forums about that price being too expensive....:confused::confused:
refreshing Newegg f5ing not available yet...ugggh.
yes, it is good price by me, but many ppl expects $500 or less
Well let's hope for the best . I will wait for vanilla ones , I don't want to overpay for a bundle game :)
i am right, you will see :)

I smell a big OC, 1100+ core and 1500mhz memory atleast? :)
so all we get is a premium version with bf4 bundled?
I thought the new bundle was supposed to be "GRID 2, Company of Heroes 2, Lost Planet 3, Total War: Rome 2, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Watch Dogs, Thief 4, Raven`s Cry" or something
no it's almost same for us.i've edited my message you can see correct price now.i think tr price will be around 1600-1650 tl.
If they set a pre order on it, in general it is real thief on prices.. They charge a lot more....
it seems US price is 729 USD with BF4 bundle
^^ see my post on page 26
Titan isn't a refresh. Titan was late just like Fermi was, the only difference was this time around Nvidia released the midrange first which gave them time to do Titan right. They've learned, but they were still late. The proof Titan was late was AMD gaining market share and during it's reign and now just a few months after it's about to undercut it bad in terms of performance\price. Calling Titan a refresh is marketing bull.
I remember the greens saying ridiculous things like Nvidia not releasing Titan when they released gtx 680 because Nvidia din't need to, and i can only laugh... again.
Fanboyism show in most threads on XS... way to go ppl.
Attachment 131398
The screenshot of the Newegg price posted in the TPU Comments section...
According to some sites, the BF4 Bundle is the Digital Deluxe Edition + Premium Membership... i think that's 100+ U$S
Holy cow, people, since when is $650 or $679 a great price? :shakes:
AMD obviously gets these codes GREATLY discounted.
It's getting pretty disgusting. Although, I think most big GPU launches have been that way...
If that price is correct, there will be an epic price gap between the R9 280X and R9 290.
Even if that may be a good deal, why can't they just offer the card stand alone for $100 less? I understand that AMD doesn't pay retail price on the bundle games but at the same time for people who don't care about the games included it's just a waste of money. If you check ebay there's lots of listers trying to sell their 3 game vouchers for as low as $15
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...&rqcType=c#rqc
All reselers are out of stock ATM so price must be sky high
I think with such pricing AMD is making the very same mistake they did during 7970 launch.
Although, I've mentioned before that 512-bit will come expensive, since it makes manufacturing complex...
What's also curious is that there seems to be no information regarding how good the cooler is. And that is a big factor for many...
Description:
PRICE AND DETAILS TO BE CONFIRMED
;)
I know you are under NDA. but has AMD revealed the price of R9 290X and R9 290 to the press yet or is that still not decided. As a matter of principle AMD should have told retailers not to accept any bookings or pre-orders until the embargo is lifted. some like ocuk are promising a full refund of the deposit if you change your mind after seeing launch pricing and perf. But I don't understand the whole purpose of this at all.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...56&subcat=1752
also will BF4 beta find a place in your GPU test suite. given its one of the biggest titles this holiday and buyers would like to know how R9 290X performs in BF4 or maybe we can look forward to a BF4 benchmarking article on the latest cards after the launch of the game in Oct end / early Nov.
Why would amd price it at $599 if it pants the titan? This is a business after all
Performance, power consumption and price were not given to reviewers.
BF4 Beta will not be added to the test suite due to my refusal to use A) Beta versions of games B) a game whose performance is currently tied at the hip to an internet connection. It will be added (single player) to the new testing suite in December which will also include a full test system refresh (IVB-E, Win8.1, etc.).
k. so i am guessing the new testing suite will focus more on 2013 games. Some of the recent and upcoming games worth considering are Arma III, BF4, Watch Dogs as they are few of the most demanding games . Games in your existing suite like Crysis 3, Tombraider could be retained as they too are demanding.
why would it be more than a 7990 it won't beet
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202036
Ha ha, I wouldn't buy a Saphire card even if they were the only ones to make an R9 290x. Every Sapphire card I have had has been the worst overclocker.... And now somebody claims that every Sapphire card they have ever had was the best overclocker in the world.
Well, my experience is Sapphire NO!
Volume of sales, potential market share...
It is really funny to see all the comparisons to Titan. Titan is mostly targeted at collectors and CUDA developers, not gamers, hence the price.
Titan is not out there to compete with anything, and it is not designed to be priced competitively.
You should be looking at GTX 780 instead.
Agree, the High end target for Enthousiast is 500$, Ultra Enthousiast 600$, no more.
For more $, to have some interest, you have compute usage ( not graphic ), large amount of ram usage for rendering.
Otherwise, interest is loooooooooow.
I dont believe Titan is a commercial success. It's just the top of the frame, and no more.
No longer. It's reign is over.
I, for one, thought those benchmark results shown were fake and actually lower than shown. Turns out the exact opposite is true. Well played, AMD, bloody well played.
How well does memory overclock? Stock frequency seems to be very conservative.
and what you expected? Lower performance then Titan? If will be true, absolute useless card for new generation and High end. New card HAVE TO beat last highest model, if not, it is :banana::banana::banana: ...
5+1 PWM hasn't done it any favours ;)
Where u get 5+1 from? Your card look like this?
http://www.brightsideofnews.com/Data...aiiFullPCB.jpg
5+1+1. For now I'm not going to say anything more on the subject :)
