Copper tubing, a little sweated in solder around the edges to prevent leakage , A 1/4 inch Plexi mount bracket to hold it in place on the motherboard and a funnel so there is no spillage (all available at you local hardware store) could make a bad assed DICE pot for the NB... It may end up looking like a Moonshine Distillery but it could work. :D
so do we have a definitive list of what benches we'll be running now? i could only find a few links to game demos from that laptop site, maybe im overlooking a link?
went from 60*F here yesterday to 30*F right now (the joys of living in WI) should be able to get some good air results this weekend at least :p:
Same here in the DFW Area, 70* yesterday and 36* right now. I have been thinking about taking my Crosshair III rig out on the back patio for one last dance for 4.6ghz to 5ghz on water. If it blows, it blows. I got a limping P55 rig and a laptop sitting on the back burner to get me by until Thuban unleashes hell upon us.
the closest i could find was a copper cap for pipes at homedepot.
2"diax1.5"height. too small and base didnt have the mass i liked.
thanks for the pics chew* -ill show this to the guys at
the pc-recycling center here. they probably have one like that.
all im familiar with are the grey aluminum ones.
yah they are round grey aluminum with that copper slug in center. It needs to be pressed out.

I would have done the same thing. Going to Home Depot/Lowes for anything isn't an issue for me, but my wife says different. :ROTF:
OK this thread has gone on way to long.
I want to see some splat IGP 3d from you guys.
Msimax wants to join the fun, he's here now benching yep you guessed it.
IGP.
http://chew.ln2cooling.com/The_Laboratory/IMG_2333.jpg
I've been wondering about the IGP.
It seems I cant go above 1010-ish on it if I want to pass 3D. Of course, that puts me towards the lowest score on the bot. :/ Now I'm not doing LN2 or anything but I'm a bit confused.
As requested simon live from Providence Rhode Island.....

Thats insane...I'm thirsty for scores...
We are taking a nap because neither of us has slept and then gonna play with something different.
I will leave you guys with the carnage and aftermath for now. Maybe a new thread on what we will be working on later depending on how it pans out.
The Asus board proved extremely reliable.....We used it because I hand delivered his giga 890GX when he arrived so he has no time on the board where as he has been working on the asus for a week or so and is familiar with it.
Special thanks to Aaron of ln2cooling.com for letting me test out a prototype NB pot, it rocks

I should be back in the game soon. I have never done a dry ice run before, so this should be fun. Well I guess I need to find a Ppot first :p:.
Edit: BTW, nice results there guys!
I dont have the workspace to even start to prepare for Dice........plus I got small kids in the apartment. Theres no way I can do any extreme cooling on this mobo Simon sent me. I thought we were just going to do some regular testing air/water or even chilled water:confused:
ya i was just planning on doin what i can, today i will be doin cool air & possibly chilled water if i can rig up my block to nb.. also talkin to my friend who works on cnc machines about making me a lil cheap alu nb pot but im not holding my breath cuz im not sure when or even if he'd be able to do it..
I’d say run what you have at hand be it air, water, dice or LN2 cooling. I think Simon knows that only a few guys can run extreme cooling. It looks to me like chew and Msimax are just trying to see how far this IGP can clock and that’s great I’m interested in knowing how far the IGP can clock myself after all this is the XS forum. :)
I wouldn’t let it bother me I’ll still get what I can get out of the MB with the cooling I have at hand and I think you guys should also. I’m not trying to tell anyone what to do but how about running the benches I ran in my stock clock benching post? If not let’s make up a list of benches we all would like to bench maybe a total of four or five different tests?:yepp:
Chew*: congratulations, u beat with your IGP my old PC Athlon 3000+@2100MHz with x1950pro 256MB (stock clocks) at 3D2006 :-D, i had overall score 3720 :)
Well while you guys are on this topic this is all I could squeeze out of the gigabyte board with the stock cooler:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...3&postcount=29
hey oldtimer have you installed the geekbench software to 64 bit before? having a problem getting the installer to run here
edit: and crystalmark is my new fav. bench :D just throw on some tunes, sit back & enjoy!
wow! omg on the HD4290 clocks!
very nice chew* & that nb-pot leaves me drooling!
titan,
doesnt have to be subzero, in fact cold air would also be relevant so as to give air overclockers an idea.
btw guys, mind doing a counter to anandtech's screwed up and spinned 890GX review that did no favors by pitting an overclocked Intel GMA graphics with a stock HD4290?
maybe we can point out to him that HD4290's can clock too, ya know.
ok were back up deciding on our next victim. first food :ROTF:
No I haven’t. The competition I was in a little while back had us running the 32-bit test only so that’s the only way I have tested it. Sorry I can’t help you right now. I can try it as 64-bit when I get a chance though.
I wonder if we should include a game test? I’d think most us have one of those games we could test. I have Modern Warfare 2. We each could test a different game if need be.
i can run the UT3 bench.. i will just run all the benches from your stock scores post minus geekbench for now. passing 3dm06 @ 1140mhz core 1700mhz sideport on air right now :p: gonna try for a lil bit more then rip through the bench's. only have cpu @ 4.1/2.73 i think right now maybe i should give it a bump too

I'm still waiting on RAM too (tommorow), but I'll be doing a little CPU/IMC testing tonight on air and post up some numbers later.
Those IGP numbers are just insane!

IGP benching is a whole lot of fun... and technically I hold two trophies now XD
EDIT:
Just realized this is my 1337 'th post XD
Ok... First set of CPU clock numbers.
These were done on air with the settup shown in this message:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=594
There are better air coolers out there now, but I just wanted to let you all know what I'm working with... :)
Ambient temps are ~21c (~70f).
I'm using CB10 for stress testing just because I've found it to be a nice/quick test for reasonable stability. It's not perfect, but it has always given me a good idea when I'm close, and if I can't pass CB10 it ain't stable! ;)
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...GX_MaxCore.png
As you can see from the SS, temps are starting to become a problem (circled in red).
I have to say, I'm still really impressed by those core clocks though!
I'm hesitant to move this board to the main rig (replacing my GBT 790X-UD4P), but these tests are starting to impress me!
The main rig has good water cooling and I'm sure I could lower those temps by at least 7c which may give me a little more Voltage headroom...
Considering this is a new board/chipset and early Bios I'm really happy with the results so far!
Oh well, off to push the IMC (seemed very weak on my chip with the UD4P)....
To be honest yes we were testing the IGP abilities/bug reporting some stuff on ASUS.
No need on gigabyte as i already did some testing with performance and everything worked fine.
Asus has a problem with certain ram dividers on current public but we wanted to see if you could still attain ram clocks while avoiding those certain speeds and if it affected performance.
The answer is it's not an issue and it seems ASUS has made major improvements with there boards abilities at sub 100C so far compared to past boards.
Next we will be testing cpu's at sub 100C.
time for some not so xtreme air results :p:
benching during march madness?? no problem!

and finally the results... instead of repeating the scores oldtimer already got using stock 4290/stock 965be, i decided to use the same overclock on cpu for stock 4290 vs overclocked 4290 results using same cpu speeds
all results have following cpu speed:

nb @ 2769mhz
ram @ 1420mhz 7.7.7.21
htlink @ 2769mhz

Nice work man
thanks chew* & titan - lol yes vantage was brutal,, i did all oc'ing in bios, just set it and went through all benches on a fresh boot, didnt change any settings whole time... probably could have went higher on the core if it wasnt for canyon flight  i passed 3d06 before all tests @ 1150mhz core but canyon barely made it through so i backed back down to 1140mhz core, with that it was very stable for all of the benches :yepp:
Great results crazydiamond and Davebert. Crazydiamond how much NB voltage are you using.
In the Gigabyte bios is there a setting to adjust the voltage on the sideport memory? Is there a separate setting to adjust IGP voltage? So far on this MSI MB the only way I have been able to raise the IGP speed above 895MHz is to increase the NB voltage. So far I haven’t found any adjustable voltage setting for the IGP in the MSI bios.
Great results on the Asus MB chew and MSImax. I looked at the features of that MB the other day and I liked what I read.:D
I need a place to buy dry ice. Do you guys have yours shipped to you or buy it locally somewhere?
I found this site one day last summer when I was thinking about trying dice. I really don’t know anything about them though. It’s worth a try I guess unless someone else has a better suggestion.
http://www.dryicedirectory.com/results.asp
hey oldtimer, my nb did 1100mhz on 70f ambient air w/ delta on nb heatsink @ 1.5v,, so 1140mhz needed more than that :D i just left it at 1.54v for all the tests - 1.52v probably would have been enough - 1.5 would have been pushing it. in an earlier post i showed how my nb scaled on ambient - i think it was default voltage was enough for 900mhz, needed 1.44v for 1000mhz & 1.5v for 1100mhz, also, the giga has a specific setting for sideport mem listed with all the rest of the voltages
here is the 4290 bios screen & screen showing all the voltages... nb voltage & sideport voltage are what used to crank the 4290.

Thanks crazydiamond. I’m thinking about taking my NB water block back off because so far it hasn’t helped the IGP clocks at all. I checked the contact pattern and it looked good during the test fit but now I’m wondering if the cooling lines are making the block lose contact with the IGP while in use? I needed 1.52v to the NB just to get the IGP stable @1000MHz.
I think I’ll reinstall the original air cooled NB block and retest.
I didn’t see any extra voltage controls in the gigabyte bios compared to the MSI at least not in the bios shots you posted.
nice work Diamond :)!
Nice clocks crazydiamond, I could only get 950 on stock, 1025 @ 1.48 and 1050 @ 1.52 with a 105 CFM Panaflo and 103CFM Delta on my CPU.
thanks everyone:up: i had fun benching igp. thanks to chew* for letting me come thru and abuse some hardware:ROTF:
This is some classic work. I will have you know that, by now, most of the north bridge ASIC team has seen it!
crazydiamond, I particularly enjoyed the UT3 benchmark run, nice to see the FPS delta on a real (great) game.
BeepBeep2 welcome to the arena.
chew* & MSIMax you are DQ'd for coming to a conventional war armed with nukes. I have suggested the admin's move your post to another website far, far away. Nice pictures though. And I guess breaking every AMD IGP record in existance, more or less, counts for something. Oh, and nice of you to debut that IGP pot. About time. :worship:
Haha ,, these threads keep geting better by the Day...Definatly the right guys were used to abusing Hardware here:D
Another great Thread i must say...

I will post some results soon, I'll be dancing with oldtimer on this one. I am having trouble getting the 4290 installed. :p: I have been having some bad luck lately lol. be back soon.

Comments:
1. In the SidePort tests, I get better results (higher delta)when increasing memory speed to 1600 from 1333 rather than increasing GPU clock from 497 to 895.
2. In the UMA+SidePort tests, the biggest performance gain is increasing memory size from 512(UMA only) to 512+128(UMA+SidePort), rather than increasing GPU clocks.
3. It kills the Intel Corei5 661 in 3DMark 2006 IGP benching.
Will do gaming tests next.
I broke 3200 '06...but I lost the screen. I've got another chance tomorrow...
I seriously cannot install this video driver. Nothing works..lol. I even modified the inf. Any one have any issues?
charged, i needed to do a clean install to get it to work properly.
So do you have the MSI MB now?
Are you trying to install the video drivers in Windows 7 32-bit? I had a little bit of trouble in the 32-bit version myself. If you are using the 64-bit version of 7 good luck? I have tried two fresh installs of 7 64-bit today trying to get the video drivers to install but so far no joy. I've tried cat 10.3, 10.2 and 9.12. I tried the ones on the MSI drivers CD also. I'll try some different thing tomorrow when I have the time.
I just installed 10.3 preview driver and it worked. I couldn't find my installs for all my 3dmark bech software and had to download them all again. I was still downloading 3d06 when I ran this with all stock setting.
here is the board and the 3d03 results. I will start getting a range of results together this week. Gotta squeaze the time in between all the family stuff.

Simon: Were you wanting us to push the IGP?
Don't get me wrong, it seems very capable, but not all that important from my point of view... It's nice for a cheap HTPC, but I prefer a stand alone card anyway. ;)
Maybe I'm not following the rules, but I'm having fun testing the new chipsets other capabilities, and they seem pretty impressive! :D
After a few days of bench testing, I actually tore my main rig apart tonight and intalled this board on it:
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...t/DSCN0455.jpg
I took that silly little aluminum cap off the PWM section and put the Antec Spot cool over it, with the heatpipe that should help keep the NB cool as well.
I've gotten better clocks with this board, especially on the IMC, but I do have new RAM too, not sure how much that plays a part... :p:
I'll do some more testing in the days to come, but my machine seems much snappier and there seems to be a pretty big improvement with an SSD and AHCI mode... (Sweet!) :)
There are a few new options in this BIOS that I'm not familiar with. They're circled in RED. If anyone has a clue as to what these may help stablaize I'd appreciate the input!
I bumped them both a little and got pretty nice results...
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...DSCN0456-1.png
The best example of this is my IMC clocks! With the GBT 790XT-UD4P the best my chip would do stable on the IMC was ~2600 reguardless of voltage...
Here is what I have with this board:
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...0324_890GX.png
So, thats around +50 on the cores, +150 on the IMC and +100 on the memory....
Life is good! :D
If you want IGP tests, just let me know... I'll be happy to run whatever you want...
If not, now that I'm on water, there will be some AHCI, IMC and HTRef tests coming your way... :D
Voltage 1 is preety useless.
Voltage 2 can help a tad when running high PCI with an IDE drive......but usually I find high pci has little impact on 3d on giga.
Thanks chew*!
BTW: pretty sure your right about these Mushkins having BBSE chips.
They're still much better than my cheapo Crucial D9KPT's though...
I know your tight with GBT man. These chips seem to have no problem running decent timings over 1600.
If I actually set them to 1600 in bios though, my machine won't even post...
If I set them to 1333 and crank the HTRef to 250 they run fine though. Wierd...
so,is it better Asus or Gygabyte with 890GX ??
thanks
It's free form dude this chapter. It is interesting to see the NB OC, I don't think there have been a lot of threads on it, agree?
But no limitations, save staying with overall direction of the thread and the H20 and cold air focus. Remember, there is a component of this work that is training and preparation for something more...

Sorry guys I hate sitting on the sideline now......but I still havent bought DDR3 for this mobo and all I have is DDR2 from my current setup. After spending over a 1g between my 5970 and Windows 7 64bit I have no money left for ram:(
So my results are gonna have to wait till I can get the ram. Hope to be up and running soon.
Daveburt and everybody else I have been very curious about the NB has anybody else but dave pushed it so far or seen any difference from what they could easily get before compared to what they can achieve now??? Is 3ghz a possability?
I can run 2.8ghz 24/7 already and can go up to 2.9-3ghz under certain conditions......well really I guess that would be normal conditions:)
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j.../th_3000nb.jpg
Anyway 3 ghz was already very close for me for 24/7 And Im hoping this new chipset might have a bit more in it? So after my initial IGP results Ill be posting some comparisons between my current 24/7 overcclocks which are,

I am batting a thousand... I had 1.0b bios on the board and was having some weird AOD issues. i downloaded the first release bios from MSI's website. I went into the bios entered the m-flash option. I browsed to my flash drive and let it flash. Now the system won't post and the CD Rom drive just flashes and won't even open the drive. Any suggestion, Does this board support a recovery method? Board is the 890GXM-G65.
Never ever ever use m-flash ever ever ever.
Your board is bricked, call MSI.
Heres a quick thread but I've read worse, mostly about intel P55 like its said. I dunno how many times I've read "mflash or m-flash" but it's not good:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ht=mflash+bios
EDIT:
If anything is in the drive, drives come with pins that you can insert and it pushes the drive door open so you can pull it out. If you dont have one a needle will work.
Ill be wanting to know this also because I have a MSI DKA-790GX platinum that had a bad flash. it just sits here doing nothing.
Thanks beep for the responce, I can get the drive open. I was just mentioning the the drive doesn't open when the system is powered on. It just has a flashing light. It was for a symptom of the issue kind of thing ;) I read that thread, and it seems I might be out of luck. I am not sure if I can RMA the board or not. I have flashed many bios updates on many boards, never had this issue.
Thats why I wonder why they cant spen $3 more to add a second BIOS. I failed a flash on my Gigabyte 790X-UD4P and it booted right up from the factory bios.
I ran some tests today using a 64-bit OS. The full version Cat 10.3 GFX drivers loaded right up first try this morning. All the 3DMark bench tests ran except 3DMark06 as it wouldn’t start. The usual fix got all the other running but not 06 I’ll add it later.

The run below is on Windows 7 RC 32-bit for now.

very nice work oldtimer! what was your sideport freq? i ran mine at 1600MHz(cpu-z incorrectly shows it at 600) w/o any voltage adjustments(1.3v stock).
i havent tested if it affects performance if sideport is at 1333MHz(stock) while UMA is at 1680MHz(as in your settings above.) thanks!
Thanks wuttz, the sideport is @667 in the bios and the IGP core is @940 and NB is @1.52+v.
I'm going to test some more games tomorrow. I've just starting to gain a very limited understanding of what this combination likes. I think I may have been a bit heavy handed with the IGP so far and I plan to back off on the juice and clocks to see it it likes the game test a little better.
I've been watching your results also and nice work BTW. Did you ever find a way to cool the NB other than stock air cooling?
ohhhh, thanks chew* :yepp:
gonna have to vary the memory sizes then!
btw, do you have any more tests you would like us to run?
i just finished stalker/call of pripryat but still have to tabulate and graph the data. i also have battlefield bad company 2 but it doesnt have any benchmark features.
I found this rather interesting.......you have the intel guys beating on IGP lately in the h55 comp.......
Seems the clarkdale IGP is only better in vantage.......
Find this rather interesting after mention of the anandtech article.
( *disclaimer* I never read it )

Best vantage.........I get the feeling based on all other results somethings fishy with intel drivers......as it's an ass kicking in all other benches.....

I ran all those 64-bit tests @512MB, no special reason I was just trying to get some mid-clock results posted. These are the first tests on the 64-bit OS and I thought I would start the sideport mem high this time as I had been running the sideport at 128MB on the 32-bit OS as seen in the last test SS (3d06 on 32-bit).
I'm going to test 3DMark03 some more today (as it's more of a GFX test than 05 or 06) by using different combinations on the sideport. Then I'll try to get to some game tests.
Alright i'll make this short and simple.
I cannot find the C3 PIIx4 965 anywhere can somebody tell me what model number or something to look for so I can find it?
Also which motherboard do I get you all choose different stuff?
I'll tell you what I plan on doin on this board
DD3 Ram Is a Must
4x memory slot
I want to run Crossfire 5850's
& I want some decent OC ability.
You guys all run UD3H UDP5 UD4P (i'm sure I got those model numbers backwards some how)
And MSI boards..
I'm sorry to seem so noobish but this boggles my mind. :P
---sorry for double
Make sure it lists 125w in the specs, not the old C2's 140w.

as far as boards, thats up to you.. just make sure its an am3 board for the ddr3 memory. ive had great results with my msi gd70 & they put out bios's like crazy. im still testing this 890gpa-ud3h and it seems like a capable board but could use some bios work. i would just find out what features you want and pick a board based on that, i think most 790fx or even gx would be fine for you & their bios's are mature, unless you need sata3 or usb3 etc then you could go w/ 890gx or wait till 890fx
On top of the box OPN HDZ965FBGIBOX=C2
On top of the box OPN HDZ965FBGMBOX=C3 the forth letter in from the right is the difference M for the C3
The box is different as well as seen below C3 is the smaller box on the left sporting the pattern

theyve done it before, not a surprise if they did it again. :shakes:

I ran 3DMark01 and yesterdays missing 3DMark06 today in Windows 7 64-bit. All the clocks are the same as all the other 64-bit tests earlier.
