Medical imagery (X-Rays, Ultrasound, MRI, PET, CAT scans) users love high resolution screens and I don't think they would be too bothered about the panel edges. Eyefinity cards (even low end as far as gaming is concerned) would be a bonus here as instead of buying a card and two triple head adapters you can run six screens from one card..Quote:

Well, while my cpu may not be the best, I don't imagine it hugely blocking a single card much if at all. Even a dual card card (5870 x2 or gtx295 for example).

Anyway, I found this video showing off Dirt 2 which appears to show wide viewing angle when 3 monitors are used. Pay attention to 1:15 when the car on the left passes. This doesn't look like scaling to me.

Has 3d gaming taken off those? Not really at all. People might blame the technology, but it is really good in some games, probably just like this eyefinity technology is. Eyefinity will be best used with older games.
To me, the size thing was already conquered long ago when video was allowed to be outputed to a larger screen monitor like an lcd tv. Sure we might not have as good as image quality but atleast you wouldn't have bezels.
For this technology to take off it will take an ideal set of factors to come into play.
Big cheap, bezeless monitors become available. Bezels will distract the general public from adopting it because it is too immediately noticeable.
A revolution game thats uses this technology to its fullest becomes available(e.g wii and its controllers). PhysX still needs such a game to become popular even those it is a free feature associated with the card.
The price of admission with 3 monitors and videocards needs to falls to under $500 eventually. Currently the price of a 5870 2gb is 450(you will need the most powerful and most memory possible for these monster resolutions) and 3 22 " monitors cost about 200 a piece = $1050, way too high a price to become really successful. Ghettoing it up with 19" will still make you into the 900 dollar range if you don't want crap crap monitors. As we have seen with game consoles, too high a price admission will stop customers dead in their tracks. Even if the hype and games are there, a crazy price will prevent something from taking off. And no way does eyefinity have the amount of hype that resembles anything like new game console. I am almost certain NV 3d gaming would have teken off if it didn't use special monitors and the glasses were 50 dollars.
The screen is a bottle neck for this technology too in regards to price. LCD prices are starting to stabilize and not sink anymore. It going to take a very very cheap videocard for this technology to catch on. If you look at most modern gaming builds recently, they typically go for about 1000 dollars including the screen.

case+ decent power supply 100
Videocard 4870 - 4890 or gtx 260 or 275 = 140-180
motherboard = 120
Ram 4gb = 60
HD 1tb= 80
OS = 110
monitor = 200
= 1050
This is a somewhat high end build(and it is beyond this market, that eyefinity will have to go after). This is what the public is used to at this point, anything else your starting to go into enthusiast. The bang for you buck nowadays is pretty high and people expect to get alot for their money after the phenom II and core i5. Turning this into an eyefinity build turns this into a 1720 dollar build if we want 2 more monitors and a 5870 2gb. Thats substantially more obviously which is why I don't think this will catch on. Don't kid yourself, no one in the high end-enthusiast markets with a 5870 will want to use 19" monitors as they are too small for everyday use.
Having support for high resolutions is not the same thing as having PhysX support. Any game can benefit from more resolution.
However, I agree with your point on price of admission ... for a full setup.

The Dell is a 30" H-IPS panel. A typical 26" IPS panel consumes 135W. A typical 20" IPS panel consumes around 80W. You are comparing essentially the a cream of the crop panel that is typically seen in very high end televisions compared to a low end computer display, a panel technology that's so bad nobody would ever consider selling it on the television market.Quote:

Before multi monitor was aimed more at productivity than anything else then triple head go came on the scene & cost as much as a gfx card it self with heavy limitations requiring allot of planing with matching monitors & at the right res which only but the hardcore would bother to go through.
Hearing about it never makes up for seeing it in action, there is no one who wouldn't be more happy with no bezel but the experience does make up for it.
Very little ever starts off a being essential. A pc is not required at all for gaming.
The NV 3D is apples to oranges as it requires another piece of hardware between the PC & the screen which you could by 2 new screen or nearly for the cost & is no use for anything else & requires specific monitors.
As time goes on people go though monitors & replace them but now they may hang onto them & try out some multi screen gaming as it will cost them nothing pluysh being able to use them for multi or extended desktop with out the need for utramon to fix the taskbar. Even second hand monitors are cheap as chips & many are thrown away in office refits.
At the end of the day it will be the marketing & easy of use which will effect it popularity.

I agree. For most high end gamers a screen for 400-600 dollars is a no-brainer then how could three screens at 200 dollars be something extravagant. Man I'm so excited for these new cards, AMD has been so tight lipped about them. Grr past couple years there would be multiple leaked benchies by now. Makes me wonder what kind of a monster 5870x2 is going to be ...MCM chip maybe.
But the real question is how many out there actually have a second monitor that they didn't put to good use yet? IE: No need to actually buy another monitor just use the spare they already have. The steam survey already points out that it's not uncommon that some already use more then one monitor.
I'm sure 5870X2 will have a lot of horsepower, but I hope it won't be in MCM.:shrug:Quote:

EyeFinity is only useful for 3+ monitors usage, you can already use dual monitors with virtually any discrete GC.
So, who the hell is going to put 3 screens on it's desk to game?

What about the others? They will just stick to one screen as usual, beacause that option gives you less problems and more comfort, and that's what a gamer wants.
It's a nice feature, but it's nothing but that.

I did a brief, cursory search and found a 'suitable' (?) TN panel that would be OK for gaming. Ignoring the fact that apparently higher resolution monitors don't have RTC yet, the nominal power consumption is also 100 W, more than 3 19" chain together which would offer a different (and better, IMO) experience.

the monitor itself won't have 8ms response it will most likely have much higher... even 2ms tn panels in reality have like 20ms response times

it's not that much about response time, but input lag. usually ips panels have a quite huge input lag, which kills the gaming experience especially in fast paced fps.Quote:

i still think the whole tft/lcd market is still in the stone age when it comes to refresh rates, response time, input lag, etc... we definately need a change in this market, the companies are selling monitors with the same specs for a long time already. give us smth really new ffs! ;)
especially monitors with a thin bezel for multi-monitor setups like it's possible with eyefinity now.

AMOLED, 1920x1200 or 1920x1080, 20" or 22", 120Hz. Even if it costs 1000€.

Wether a monitor is suitable for gaming or not is SUBJECTIVE. It's like me after using SSD saying HDDs are not suitable as OS drive.
