Possibly as a result I'm now limited to about 4.4ghz on water if I'm lucky. FSB 480, but v shakey and that's limited to 480x9 for benching. on the 790i I could bench 480x9.5 no worries.

I'm not sure if it is heat related, whether it can be fixed with a new bios, but it's just not any fun.

So I'd like to know, how does the black ops compare? The first few pages I've read here are a bit of a turn off, but subsequent bioses have fixed a lot of issue right?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi RLM! Finally ... though you are one of the lucky people who got a good 790i ... Yes, BIOSes fixed a lot of things, but BlackOps being more stable, it not that overclockable as 790i. It is difficult to say this for me such as I am comparing unstable 790i results with stable BlackOps results. I couldn't manage to get my 790i stable enough (at least such stable as BlackOps or 780i), and after all EVGA admitted that it was a problem with my board.

I hope to get better results with BlackOps and all water cooling. I am not sure if it will be possible to bench 490 MHz FSB though. Why don't you try 790i FTW?

Didn't you notice that RLM was talking about quad core, particularly QX9650? Benching 490 FSB is not that easy on quads ... and 550 is impossible, period.

I missed that part. On the other hand i was talking about the board itself, not saying his cpu would be able to reach 550, but the b-ops has no problem reaching that fsb :)

Thank you, RLM. I still love Blackops much more than 790i though ;) I will trade several additional OC points for 24/7 stability anytime. I wouldn't trade my Blackops for any 790i FTW ...

I would love to know what settings were used to get that far. I haven't really tried much but I can't really get it past ~560. Or is it just a binned board we're talking about here?

same here actually, the first time i played with the BO i thought "wtf is this BIOS structure?" but after a week i didnt even notice it anymore and it all worked really well... i had a lot of fun of playing with the mem and an 8600 until i hit a wall with the 3rd and 4th mem slots. then i figured out dll adjustments are needed for those slots to break the 1950s stable, and after that got to 2200 :D

error54 every now and then which is annoying, but its still loads of fun... unfortunately i havent had much time to play with the board again after that :D

i used the settings raja posted on benchtec actually :D
i slightly changed them but basically used his settings as a guideline.

G25 (lol, old times)
1:4 400 with an E8500
888-24
i used the white slots and the following dll adustments:
white dimm clock dll adjust -4
blue dimm clock dll adjust -3 (actually helps!)
crtl dll +1

No success... I just don't know why I cant run it stable on 2000MHz... I'm using 2x1GB Corsair 1600MHz v3.1,E8600,HX620W,7300gt/3870 X2 (depend),temperatures are fine (about 40°C for almost every components)... Tried almost every settings on internet and no go... Just don't know where I'm mistaking... Can run super pi,but prime stable is a no go...

cpu333 is generally regarded as better for overclocking, tbh though i don't really know what the difference is (they both result in same mhz) - perhaps someone else can enlighten me.

i dont know tbh, people say 1.4 333 gives them better scores, i saw no difference and went for 1.4 400 cause it clocked slightly better for me...

have you tried single channel?
what slots are you using?
whats timings are you using?
what PL are you using?
what nb voltage and what cooling?

the strap is a combination of several chipset timings.
333 is made for 333 cpus and 400 for 400 cpus.
interestingly 333 clocks better and scores better for most people, which makes sense cause besides the 9770 there are no other 400fsb cpus, so naturally every manufacturer will tweak the 333 strap cause that helps 99% of the users.

Didn't tried single channel... I'm using white slots,tried 8-8-8-24,9-9-9-24,1T/2T... PL 9 and 1.594v for NB with aircooling (temp about 41°C under load)

what kind of aircooling is that? :D
those temps sound a bit too good, are you sure its only 40 under load?
the temp reading is on the bottom of the pcb, so an open stand with air moving below the board will make chipset temps look lower than they are!

what bios are you using?

I tried g28 and g30...
My mbo is at the table next to window and when benching I open it. Cooler is a little warm during bench. I use 80mm on mosfet and stock 40mm on NB full speed

I'm on the 2x2gb 1600mhz kit, which tops out at 1800mhz stable 1860mhz bootable (limited by quad?), are ya sure your sticks can go 2000mhz Quake?

On raja's review he mentions "We were quite surprised that 4GB held up so well at this speed. In fact, using 2x1GB kits did not provide us with any advantage for stability so this 2x2GB kit is what we recommend for a 24/7 PC running 64-bit Vista"

I'm not sure,but I saw a lot of score with that memory on 2000 with the same revision as I have...

Have you tried changing NB GTL? This was vital for me but i'm not sure if it's because i'm on a Quad. How high vdimm? Here is some of the info Raja sent me, some of it might be useful:

The trade off in the Samsung based parts is that they don't really like anything below CAS 9, without requiring judicious levels of voltage. Running CAS 7 curtails the prospects of outright memory bandwidth (hence FSB) on these chips.

To add some stability into the mix you can also set 6,8,3,6 for the R2RD (Same), R2RD (Different), W2RD (Same), W2RD (Different) settings, though at a bit of a performance hit

Make sure you use slots 2&4 for the memory for a start.

SAmsung memory does not like high Vdimm for prolonged periods - I never use more than 2V on it as I doubt it qould last long. In fact, while we're on the subject I have their 1GB modules here and they actually clock worse over 2V Vdimm - go figure.. If running at CAS 9 where the modules are desinged to run you should fiund yourself getting returns at just under 2V. this is to do with coming into Jedec spec and also gearing up for the on die IMC of Nehalem which demnds the use of lower reference volatges such as Vdimm VTT.

Having to skew a signal depends mainly on 2 factors, the first is due to a mistmatch in motherboard PCB trace lengths. The second is down to a heavily capacitive load stressing the MCH signal output devices to such an extent that waveform slope/hold/fall times become distorted and affect slot to slot data acquisition times. The heavier the capacitive load of the memory modules, the more likely this situation is likely to manifest. When it comes to the Samsung modules (even in 2GB format), they represent a very easy load for the MCH to drive, so generally do not need signal skews when operating around the 1800Mhz mark

Sounds to me like the clock skew values are what you need to be looking at, but i have no experience myself with memory clocks that high.

I doubt GTL would help me... I'll get Cellshock 1866 for about 2 week so we'll see what was problem... Also next week another BO is coming so I'll give it another try...

RLM, I have changed my mind and returned 4780x2 back to the store. There are two problems for me - first one it is too hot, the design is pretty limited for overclocking such as second GPU is getting 96C even being idle. Some people increase the fan speed, but 60-65% idle is too loud for me, as they recommend.

9800GX2 being watercooled and overclocked, gives almost the same FPS, but it is pretty silent without the stock fan - of course. I will continue to use it for a while, even at 1920x1200.

According to Mr. Natural's (EVGA forum) recommendation I have replaced my expensive Corsair 1800 memory (D9GTR) with inexpensive 2Gbx2 Crucial PC-8500 (1066, D9JNL), at 1.95V it works even better. Mr. Natural had been able to run it at 7-7-7-20-1T@2000Mhz@2.0V ... I haven't try this mode yet, but I know I couldn't boot with Corsair at CLS7@2000MHz no matter which voltage I have used - though I didn't even try more than 2.1V.

I still can't believe that once I have paid $622 for 2x1Gb Crucial DDR3-2000 (D9GTS), which is worse than $400 Corsair 1800C7D and this Corsair kit is worse than $75 Crucial DDR3-1066 (D9JNL) ... either Crucial is mad, DDR3 market or Mr. Natural ... with me as well.

And I am also thinking about trying 790i FTW, Blackops is nice, but Nvidia's stuff is going down in prices so fast ... $250 for FTW is not a bad option to try ... may be they have fixed that instability issue.
No, most probably I will stay with Blackops and wait for x58 Foxconn board.

regarding the memory, well for high end memory you usually only pay for 3 things:
1. service+support
2. nice heatspeaders
3. guarantee for high clockspeeds/tight timings

if you know what chips to look for you can usually get close to the same results, sometimes even better, by grabbing a kit of value memory with the same chips.
BUT, the main reason the cheap crucial stuff does well is cause its newer... the other kits are older, and the recent d9gtr chips from micron are getting better while the other mem was probabaly made in a time where there were no good gtr chips around or there were no gtr chips available whatsoever :D

I think 2000MHz is possible even without dll adjustment, but yes I did some dll adjustment and again nothing... Thinking that memory cant go 2000 stable...

It is from my friend... :D Then we will see what is problem and I'll test it also on 790i...

True, but Crucial - how could they use D9JNL in low end value memory and use D9GTS in a top-uber-most expensive kit, I simply didn't get it. Crusial in my mind was always an engineering company, not a marketing company, and now ... I love their DDR2 PC6400 chips, and I love DDR3 1066 D9JNLs, but I would never ever buy their "top-of-the-line" products, period ... Their service is not different for value modules and top modules, isn't it?

I just got my Black Ops system up and running, easy as pie but it is not overclocked yet. The processor is a Q6600 G0 SLACR, memory is a pair of OCZ PC3 12800 (OCZ3P16004GK), 7-7-7-24. Can someone suggest overclock settings? I'm a bit confused because the bus is only 1066.

gtr/gts costs more than jnl and people want gtr/gts cause it scales better with volts and tey get slightly higher clocks (50mhz)
thats for the top bin parts tho, if your looking at 1800 and 1600 yields at low vdimm, then JNL beats the big chip micron stuff...

h3ll yeah! for ddr2 it wasnt that big, but for ddr3 its enormous!
the best batch large chip ddr3 stuff from micron clocked amazing, 1800 cas6 yield of 50% or more! later batches had a 1800 cas6 yield of maybe 3%... some 0.00% :D
the funny part is that the lowest micron bin clocked the same as the highest micron bin :lol:
even now the jnm clocks the same as jnl... microns binning process kinda sucks... i had a conf call with their engineers when i still worked for cellshock and they said they would try some new approach but from what ive heard it doesnt seem to work well... idk how exactly they bin, but its not doing much and the actual real world max speed is about the same for all bins.

for ddr2 the differences were not that big. some batches were VERY sensitive to voltage tho... the earlier batches scaled with up to 3v and beyond, the later ones stopped at 2.4v sometimes and wouldnt scale at all with more vdimm... earlier ones clocked very well with cas4 and cas3, the newer ones clocked high with cas5... theres def a notable difference with mem chip batches!

look at the BH5/BH6 database thread i created years back :D
search the forums and youll find it :D

if it can do 777 at a speed it can do 888 at the same speed as well, but some chips only like high volts with tight timings, so 2000 888 might be unstable with the same vdimm that is stable with 2000 777 :D
and the newer micron chips dont like tight trp and trcd, they love 777 888 or maaaybe 776. check my older threads in the xtremebandwith section when i still worked for cellshock, i posted the timings the chips prefer and how much mhz they scale from each timing etc in several threads :D

ouuuuu sounds bad, looks like your cpu is a slackR :lol:

an alternative approach:
first of all make sure all is cooled well and doesnt get above 50C.
60C is ok, but thats really the max you should accept, try to keep things in the 50C range or below!
pull down the cpu multiplier and pull out the memory from the equation by giving it the max allowed vdimm and setting it to 888 or 999 timings.
now the only thing limiting your fsb overclock should be the fsb/chipset itself.
increase vtt bit by bit and see how high you can get the fsb.
bumping up nb voltage and vcore might help as well to get a slightly higher fsb, and pll volts can help too. gtl settings later, those are fine tuning....

once you know the max fsb, set the fsb to default, pull up the multi to the max, keep the mem slacky like before, and then pull up the fsb bit by bit again, bumping vcore, to find the max cpu clocks.

once you know max cpu clocks and max fsb, you know what multiplier/fsb combo to aim for. remember that max multi will not give you the same high fsb as the lowest cpu multi! you always lose a bit...

once you got the cpu dialed in, all you need is fine tune the memory.
OR you can spend more time fine tuning the cpu by playing with pll, vtt, nbgtl, cpu gtl etc to squeeze another 10+mhz fsb out of the cpu.

I was planning on buying some more memory to make a 64bit OS. My question is should I buy another 2 x 1Gb sticks of the G Skill 4 X 1GB sticks =4GB. I am running them at 450FSB 1800MHz 8-7-7-18 1T. Do you think I can run the same speed with 4GB? Or should I look into the 2 x 2GB stick = 4GB and go that route, and which one should I look at?

if you dont mind tweaking it, go for 4x1gb, if you want a plug and play setup, go for 2x2gb
afaik 4x1gb clocks better than 2x2gb. if you find good 2x2gb itll clock as good as 4x1gb, but those good 2gb sticks are hard to find and expensive i think.
then again, you might think about the future and go for 2gb sticks already cause you will want 3x2gb on nehalem :D

i personally would bae my decision on the cost factor...
if i have time to tweak the mem then id get the extra 2x1gb
if i dont have time and can find good use for the kit i already have or sell it easily, and the 2x2gb kit doesnt cost that much, then id go for that option :D

Make it Vdimm=1.9V and you will be able to boot.

But I cant go into BIOS to it change into 1.9v... When I put another stick,my BIOS reset and cant boot...

So you put 2 sticks in and it resets all bios settings?.... shouldnt vdimm just apply to the whole 4 slots? I know the blackops does that..

Try to set 1.9V in BIOS with one module and then insert another one.

Question I just received a new set of G Skill 12800 so now I have 4 x 1gb sticks. My current sticks are D9GTS, but I tried to check to see what these new sticks where but I didnt see any numbers like before. I took out my old set and installed new set and I tried with stock setting and ran Memtest with no errors. After that I tried with my old setting which where 7-7-7-18 1T FSB 1800 strap 400 and ran Memtest but received many errors within seconds. So I am guessing the set are bad? And my next question is with 4 x 1gb sticks where should I start looking for a stable FSB and with what strap? 333/400? Thanks

Hi , I was wondering what could be the source of this problem :
At first I was an AMD fan , and for the first time tried to go with Intel. I hot a Q9550 , Asus Rampage Extreme , mushkin ddr3 1600 4gb 2x2 kit , and a sapphire 4870x2 . on my CPU a had a Zalman 9700LED , all that junk was powerd by OCZ 850W PSU .
Well after a week of trying to get my rig stable ( random frezzes , failure to boot , with BIOS putting some crazy volategs on NB ,CPU , RAM and SB ) my PC started to do a weird thing : start for couple of seconds with oll leds on and fans spinning , and shut down , and then start itself again , ok tried to reset comos , swith to BIOS chipset n2 , tested my 4870x2 and PSU on my AMD rig ( worked fine) - nothing hellped.
Replaced my RE and mushkin ram to Foxconn BlackOPS , g-skill ddr3 1600 2x2gb ( the one that is in the list of ram for blackops at this forum) , got ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120 120mm 2-ball UFO Bearing / Transparent CPU Cooler , yesterday recieved all that stuff , and ... same problem , ony this time MB shows FF on post-led ( yeeey Foxnonn special thanks to that nice post-led) .
So I'm gessing my CPU is dead , is that a right guess ? (it's a C1 stepping SLAWQ ).And if that's the case , I hope it didn't do any harm to my MB , because I accidantly pushed the comos reset button when the power was on insted of just reset button X_X .

Sounds like a dead cpu indeed. And no a dead cpu can't really harm a motherboard. The other way around it's a problem but dead cpu won't kill your board.

Take the cpu and reseat it. Check for bent or broken pins and thermalpaste on the bottom of the cpu. Try a different psu(just use 24 pin and 8 pin) as well as clearing the cmos with the battery out.

yep i remember doing lil bit over 2000mhz with cellshock (14400) sticks it took little over 2.2v to reach it.. the settings with this board are very tricky but once you get everything working its extremely stable.. you will just have to test a whole lot of settings until you find the stable ones :up:

I would like to show you guys what the North block will look like using the metal block (black) vs a copper one. I ran 1 loop for about 3 months using the following parts. Distilled water, Swiftech Hydrx coolant, Pentosin antifreeze (G001100) I am hopping Foxconn did not skimp with the new X58 board BloodRage North Block? The sad thing is I was given a NEW all Copper block for a replacement, but I was to lazy on switching them. :ROTF:

Because I like simpicity, I'm hoping Saaya can find the time to follow-up on this post. I would much rather have a loop that can be easily removed and installed again. Being able to remove the stock 3n1 cooler, install a 3rd party NB waterblock and still use the heatpipes would be sweet.

Them pictures are SCARY, Im glad I changed my NB top for Delrin 3weeks after buying my Black Ops. The B ops NB set up under water is great very good temps for all in one solution, Much better than the ASUS equivalent.

Ratty, I cannot find that post for the life of me. I thought I had read something similar regarding the BOps, but that series of posts eludes me. I've goolged the heck out of it and still no luck. I think that post had some great picks as well.

Yeah Bummer, I have spent a full night searching without any luck, I was thinking of performing the mod myself next time I clean my loop. I dont think it will be to hard. My temps are very good anyway but I should imagine a new application of tim will help temps even more

i had reached 4Ghz on my cpu and 2000 on my memory but could not get it stable no matter what. the main problem is, when the nb is cold it works fine but when the nb gets hot - could harldly leave finger on it even though i have a cooling fan on it- the board would become so unstable it was impossible to do anything. it seems the nb needs an etreme cooling solution

you can click on the link in my sig for my bios settings for 4Ghz cpu and 2000 memory and go from there, but do it soon as i have dropped my pc down to 3.6Ghz And 1800 memory and will be updating the bios settings to reflect this soon, and it is a lot more stable and i can leave my finger on the nb without getting it burned

I had mine apart yesterday, had I seen this earlier I would have taken pics, I was looking into fabricating a custom NB block for air cooling as my TRUE120 negates the use of any of the NB cooling solutions in its current orientation so I stripped the 3 in 1 off my board to have a look see.

The NB pot is connected to the heatpipe plate assembly by four screws, when assembled this in turn is fixed to the board with the two "legs" you can see on the NB pot.

The mating surface on the bottom of the heatpipe assembly (the one that contacts the NB chip) has quite pronounced milling marks so I will disassemble it again next week and lap the surfaces (I'll lap the pot bottom and heatpipes as much as I can as well) at which time I'll take pics for you guys. I only decided to have a look late saturday afternoon and there were no shops open to secure the supplies required to do it there and then so the project is deferred until next week.

The TIM on the NB was well spread but the SB looked like the cooler wasnt making contact at all as the TIM "appeared" to still be in its original condition and not spread. I applied MX-2 to them both. I didn't do anything to the mosfets as I didn't know whether to apply MX-2 to the thermal pad or not and by the indentation in the pad it appeared to be making solid contact with the mosfets so I left well enough alone in this instance.

Undo eight screws and the 3 in 1 assembly is off the board and then a further four screws to release the pot from the heatpipe assembly, it really is quite easy.

Hi, I just got this board recently and I thought that foxconn had used some kind of special coating on that top to prevent galvanization(hope I spelled
that right).

Nope. It's anodized, but that isn't going to stop mixed metal corrosion. Get the brass top from Petra's if you want to use the stock NB cooler for water. Otherwise, BOps is a very good board. It has the voltage stability and BIOS options to allow me to push my hardware to the limits of my cooling system. I just need to upgrade my water system to allow me to push along a bit further.

Yah, I'm running it on air for now Q6600 @ 3.3 no problem. Slowly going to get it up to 4.0 perhaps. The egg had it as a
shellshock deal for like $119AR. I ordered a derlin top from UK chilled PC, but that will take a while to get here I'm sure. I know the bloodrage is coming out and will be a lot better, but might get the bloodrage next year when price goes down.

Hell, I've tortured my Q6600 up to 4G keeping the NB on air. I use the supplied fan, bolted to the NB. Sounds like a jet engine. At 1.6 VNB, temps are high 50's. Not good. For 24/7, I run 9x417, with about 1.47VNB. The NB fan runs at a quiet 5-% duty cycle. Water would be best. Keep the NB cool, <50C and these boards really open up.

Regarding the Bloodrage, that's a whole new animal. We are not that far behind the performance curve with X48. I'm going to wait a generation or so with Intels integrated mem controller. Then it ought to really kick ass.

I called foxconn: 17148719968 number and spoke to Rick and tried to get a
replacement top from them. They said they don't carry any extra parts and
have never given out a replacement top to anyone...so I'm a bit wary of a
company that doesn't try to correct their mistakes.

In all fairness I knew it came with an aluminum top to begin with, but it would
be nice for a company to make right on what was clearly their mistake, instead of forcing you to spend more money on a replacement.

That corrosion is scary! I have to find another lid, soon. I pulled up the link provided earlier but they have none available. Does anyone know if there are other replacement lids or if Foxconn has come up with a replacement? I keep my components for quite awhile and upgrade when I can afford it. It would suck if this led to H2O leaks and ruined alot of hardware I can't afford to replace.

step 2 remove the 4 screws on the NB section connecting the heatpipe base plate on the NB to the pot
step 3 put back on the HP assembly, but without the SB screws (the 2 that go into the pot from the MB, and the 4 that hold the plate to the pot)
step 4 ???????
step 5 use long screws to attach the universal chipset cooler to the HP base plate, AKA profit

i would get whatever has the universal mount and the largest base, mcw30 seams non ideal for this use but its the best for just a NB

Yep. Both the MCP & the MCW30 have about the biggest bases, compared to the rest. I'm also thinking about removing the HP assembly altogether and getting one of the Thermalright mosfet coolers. It looks like the Type 2 might fit.

Let us know what your results are, temps vs NB voltage settings.

I'm having trouble getting my FSB above 480....

I have my RAM strapped low (1:3 and I know it's good up to at least 1684MHz), and my CPU is on a multi of 6. I don't even get a startup screen when I restart the computer after moving the FSB above 480. I have tried higher freq's to make sure it isn't just a hole. I'm a little apprehensive of upping the voltage too much. That being said, at 1.35VCore, my IBT runs at 69C, so what voltage should I be comfortable with on NB (stock fan mounted), and the CPU? I tested with the voltages up to 1.425 CPU and 1.5XX on the NB, but didn't want to go above that without consulting experts first. I'm not sure what the upper limits of these values would be for someone on air.

Anyone care to help?

I have been getting bios error code d3, Are you getting that? It is an unknown code. I suspect it could be due to a hot nb. I am getting 43 degC with the nb water cooled, or it may just be the limit of the cpu?

I tried today with dice on the nb and a second blackops nb dice pot from an old blackops on the cpu and posted at 600fsb - didnt quite boot into windows though, I used increased voltages. I had to cut the bench short due to ice buildup. but it did show that the fsb was increased.

My NB runs in excess of 50°C no problems.

You guys seem to be pumping in way more voltage than I need to run at 4.0GHz, 500MHz FSB is easy to obtain, 500*8.5 takes 1.325v with 1.312 on the NB.

I need >1.3625v to be stable at 4.50GHz so with air I don't bother any more.

The cpu is rock stable at 4.4Ghz and i think it can go a little further with more tweaks, but when i get the ram above 1800, Evolution is going Crazy! :mad:I have terible game lags, i cannot even finish a mark06...I 've tried out everything Ram Skews, Ram Volts, PL's, straps... In order to test how far the 9650 can go im using the 5:8 divider which gives me 1568 :shakes: at 4.4Ghz (490*9). Also i want to add that i have a pair of CSX 2x2GB 2000mhz with Micron GTR :up:The same things with CSX too, im unable to go futher than 1800...So im asking, if i get BlackOps will i be able to get more than 1800mhz? Also i would like to try dominators with CSX together, is there any possibilities of achieving this one out??

I have just recently installed 2*2GB modules of 1600MHz memory and I can't seem to get it to run at 1N with G32 so I'll revert to G30 on the weekend to see if that helps.

ive been looking but cannot find anywhere, what is the highest fsb on a quad with this board??? i just bought it and hoping for 475/485fsb???

I achieved 560 stable with 1.4v NB, but with lower memory frequency (you need to use 1:1.2 if I remember correct)... I posted somewhere here my bios settings, I'll try to find it...

This is X48 Blackops...... 560 FSB QUAD-stable? .... 1.4v NB? .. maybe with liquid helium. =)

Sorry :D Didn't read that quad... With quad, I achieved 491 for super pi and ~470 +/- stable
