OCZ 8500 Low-Voltage Blade

I really don't think vDIMM helps these kits much.

Myself & how many of you now have posted that vDIMM does not really improve results at all.

I tried various different straps & ratios, it didn't affect maximum speeds much at all either, & we've got all kinds of different mobos & chipset users all reporting pretty much hitting walls.

I also found loosening from 5-5-5 to 6-6-6 does pretty much nothing also.

It really seems most of these hit a brick wall around 1180-1220 range, & no amount of vDIMM or loosening timings helps.

I think the uber high binned stuff came out initially, & now we're stuck with a lot of lesser binned kits.
Pretty obvious binning is very tight, no question.

Honestly, the ProMOS in the G.Skill 1200 kits is far superior to this Elpida unless you hate vDIMM, as it actually scales with vDIMM & can do much better speeds than these LV OCZs can...

Mine tops out @ 1180 1.88v. I can get to 1200 but fails ANY stability test I run. I've also tried countless settings using different straps, low-FSB high CPU, high-FSB low CPU, but only realized very small improvements with lot's of crashes and reboots.

So ya, unless you were lucky enough to get an earlier generation of the 1066s, these 1150's offer very little OC potential.

PGN / Price Guide Network is a company that eva2000 mentioned (in another thread here at XS) he uses because they ship internationally. I checked the reseller rating and they haven't had any reviews in '09 and the last couple from '08 were not too good. You'll have to decide for yourself.

People are not idiots. $140 for a 4GB 1200MHz kit is a ripoff. I can go out and get 4x1GB D9GMH/JKX sticks for less and know they will clock better than the G-Skill kit.

18 is # 1, don't do it. You will regret dropping $140 on that G-Skill kit, A lot of DDR3 kits aren't even that expensive.

ddr-1300 is a breeze with this kit.
Ket,alot of boards cant do 1200 with 4 dimms populated,and the ones that

Can the G.Skill PC2 9600s "Pi" do DDR2 1300+ with slight voltage increase?

I'm hitting nearly 10k on everest memtest with my current OCZ Reapers set up and the LV Blades wouldnt be a very big upgrade for me unless they can clock past 1250 easily (which I seriosly doubt now).

They can do it from 2.1v to 2.3v depending on the cpu and fsb you're running:

Yes...I'm drooling actually. I've always loved ram overclocking, with probably my best achievement in my sig. I've gotten 983 4-4-4-10 and 1066 5-4-4-6 on my SuperTalent sticks. These, well I can't do 5-5-4-12 @ 1066 and can't push speed either.

There are still two kits of 9600 blades in the UK but £93 is too expensive for even the hardened enthusiast it would seem... no way I was spending that when I could get the 9200s £40 cheaper.

As for the Gskill 9600s, they cost almost £200 in the UK lol :D

I never had a problem running about 1250MHz when I had 4x1GB sticks of Cellshock. Was a doddle with my modded BIOS, never tried vanilla BIOS it was just all part of my testing memory compatibility improvements.

Eitherway, I still don't think the G-Skill 9600s are worth it. 1300MHz may be nice to see, but for 24/7 usage I doubt anybody even here runs much over 1200MHz.

i was running 1260mhz with gskills and 1200+ with d9
in 2008 i never ran below 1200;)

you can run em 1260-1333 24/7 2.1v-2.2v they dont even get hot
if you brave to go over 2.3v you can do 1400

Best guess is that they're using the same Elpida ICs as the Blades, but charging WAY more. Considering they were $5 more than the Pi, it was a no brainer. Of course, if I had based it on looks.......

Many, many value RAM kits use Elpida.

I also see it in OEMS (HP, Dell, Acer, etc.) all the time.

You can try OCing them, but i wouldn't count on great luck.

OCZ is likely using different IC, or it's just the very best binned of all the crap.

Only value RAM ICs i've found to be pretty consistent for decent OCing is PSC.

I tried some ProMOS once (looked just like the stuff in the G.Skill Pis), & couldn't even do 1000.

Well, from what I heard OCZ was using Elpida's 1.8v DDR2-800 IC. (rofl) They have a DDR2-1066 one also but I've got no idea why that wouldn't clock better.

You set it to DDR2-1200 in unlinked mode with your FSB at 475MHz, didn't you?
If we calculate this we get a DRAM to FSB ratio of 600MHz/475MHz =~ 1,263, but such a divider does not exist, and since the closest to your setting is 1,250 a.k.a. 5:4 divider the board boots with this divider. :)

I got a 11.591 on a 1m SuperPi run, but it fails miserably in LinX, so I'm back down to 1800 FSB, the RAm is still at 1200 though. Real 1200 :D

I ran 4-4-3-10 1T on 1000mhz and didn't make the 10gb/s write speed, but I managed a latency around 43ns or something.

SuperPi preferred the higher speed though: 1M in 11.591s on this setup ;)

im only asking because i only wanna run at 1200 & prefure ocz over other brands.

my current reaper hav been running at 1200mhz for ages ,but i wanted to go 2x 2gb & dont wanna loose bandwidth. im happy with my current clocks & just wanted the extra amount of memory.

just to ask my question again, as u might hav missed it with zsamz telling u how to run ur company.

so if i bought sum blade 9200's they are very lightly gonna hit 1200mhz but not above?

the reason im asking is i only want 1200mhz, since this is how ive been running my current reapers at for ages.

im happy with my current clocks/setting & just wanted the upgrade from 2x 1gb to 2x 2gb. but dont wanna upgrade to larger chips if i cant hit 1200mhz still.

so am i looking for pot luck wether the 9200's will hit 1200mhz? as i only really want ocz ram not another brand.

There is no way I can guarantee 9200's to run 9600 speeds. It will be luck of the draw like any overclocking.

What's really funny is that a little over a year ago, nobody was thinking about 2x2GB kits hitting 1200.

Which is why there is no reason why people (not you) should complain that a $80 set of 4GB PC2-9600 or PC2-9200 ram will "only do" 1250 Mhz @ 1.85v.

Of course, that $140 set can do 1300 Mhz @ 2.15v.

Usually all you get for $46 is DDR2-800 "Value" ram that runs Cas 6 DDR2-900 at best. :ROTF:

Well I must admit that I am a bit dumbfounded that the 1066 kit does the same 1200 timings that I can with my 9600's, but that I still can't go higher myself... but hey, at least I'm running at rated speeds :D

It may or may not go as high as yours. Like Ryder said, it's luck of the draw. But I have yet to hear of a LV set that didn't hit 1150. In fact most if not all hit 1170.

Man, I've got some issues. I'm too lazy to test individual sticks in memtest I guess.

Had 8 errors after 2 hours the other day, and no matter what I throw at these things I can't go over 1115. But then, my CPU is flaky so I can't make a judgement.

I've also backed off to 5-5-5-18 now, I was having alot more BSOD's on 5-5-5-10 and 5-5-5-12.
But I did drop the CPU back down to 2900 and tried to boot at 1160 (1.85v) and it hung up while posting. :clap:
Ended up reseting CMOS about 5 times that day and flashing about 3 different BIOSes. :down:

I'll reseat the RAM in a few minutes, it didn't feel very snug when I installed it. :shrug:

Don't run tRAS so low unless you are absolutely certain it's stable.

I'd suggest some HCI Memtest action to ensure this.

Two instances set to around 1000-1500 MB each till they both hit well into the few hundred % (do it overnite).

Memtest86+ is NOT a valid overclocked RAM stability test...it sometimes will miss errors that show up in HCI or LinX/IBT @ max RAM (don't run the stupid "Standard" stress test; that's a joke as it doesn't stress all your RAM.)

the 9600 kit can run to 1250mhz with only 1.84v, on hwupgrade two user use this kit at 1250 1.84 RS 24/7...

The only issue I have with this ram is they are limited to certain dividers, at least on my Motherboard. I have the pc9200's and they will not post at 1150 5:6 divider. Using the 4:5 divider they do fine for me. 1200mhz stable 8+ hours blend. 1182mhz 10hrs blend and IBT stable pl8 turbo. But I run a 489fsb and need 1222mhz at a 4:5 and that is not possible with this kit. So my OC is limited by the divider I have to use.

How ironic to see how bad people want DDR1200 and can't even pull it off with the 9200's while my 8500 kit did it dead easy.

Seems OCZ is binning them a hell of a lot tighter now.

Come to think of it, this kit is now retired running in a non-overclockers computer at a mere DDR1066.

I think what zsamz means is that when you spend a reasonable amount on RAM, its expected you get SOME headroom, otherwise whats the point in, say, spending £70 on a set of OCZ Platinums that just barely reach their rated 1150MHz, and a cheap "no-name" PC9200 kit picked up for £45? You expect no headroom on the no-name kit. Theres also the massive degree of discomfort you get when a kit barely reaches its rated speed. In the back of your mind you will constantly be thinking [is this kit going to last or is it going to blow up?] its well known fact that regardless of voltage, anything thats pushed to the edge never lasts very long..

I just hope the £70 I just spent out on some OCZ Platinums gives me a little headroom over 1150MHz(1180MHz or so will be fine.. enough for that discomfort zone to disappear). Every time I've tried OCZ in the past they have burned me. Even the OCZ RAM cooler I use the first one I got didn't work :down: How bloody hard is it to make sure 2 60mm fans strapped to a lump of metal work?

There is some headroom.

TBH, i don't know what he's talking about.

Everyone posting results that knows what they are doing with a decent mobo has gotten a decent increase over stock, usually at least to the next speed bin or higher.

It definitely gets tighter as you get to the 1200 kits, but as they don't do all that much over 1200 (maybe 1250 range or slightly higher), that's to be expected.

For the price, i don't blame OCZ.

If they were trying to charge what G.Skill was for so long with their 1200 kits, then that'd be different, but they aren't...they forced G.Skill to bring down the pricing.

TBH for £70 I do EXPECT a 30MHz or so wiggle room margin. As would 99% of other people I would think. When memory kits barely reach their rated speed, its not "tight binning" per-se, its more of a manufacturers mentality to push something right to the limit out of the box then wonder why that product has such a high RMA rate.

well i got a kit of 9200's yesterday afternoon & ive had very little time to test but im already running at 1200mhz 5-5-5-18-56 1.87v . i will post sum everest scores etc when i get time, but i dont hav much free time atm. got a week off work but im busy doing stuff & my gf dont like me spending time mucking about with my rig when were off together.

just large fft priming atm, will post when i can.

So finnaly PGN has 19 kits of 9600 blades at ~88$ in stock

My 9200's can't go above 1090 but I also have POS mobo and POS CPU.

And, I seem a bit lazy to try to go further, I have no reason to unless I'm doing everest or something.

Oh, I forgot...I can boot at 1180 in Single Channel @ 1.82v but I got lucky, had 21,000 errors in 20 minutes of memtest86+. How the heck to you boot into windows for 10 minutes and shut down with 21,000 errors lol.

Actually you are correct. I could not boot with 5:6 divider using the LV Plat's, I honestly thought it was the ram that was the problem. The only divider that I could use was the 250A 4:5. Thursday I got the GSkill pc2 96004gbpi, put them in and could not boot using the 240b, or 250a divider. After a bit of frustration I used a single stick and finally booted with 250a, then put the second stick in and made it to windows but bsod. After a few hours of messing with this I took the rev1.1 board out and put the older rev1.0 board in. Went to bios and set up for 4500mhz 240b 5:6 1200mhz mem and booted to windows, then passed 8 hours prime blend. Another guy from XS is having this same issue with his rev1.1 board.

Depends, DDR3-1333 CAS 7 will be trumped by CAS 5 DDR2, DDR3-1600 CAS 7 is not much different.

It depends on the memory controller also, you have to factor that in.

I think we all know by now you dont like GB, but seriously have you even used one of there newer boards to know how bad they suck? Since twilight was kind enough to post some numbers for the p5q, which I also have and know what it can do, ill post some for the ud3 at the same settings. They may not be what a dfi p45 can do but I wouldnt say they suck. :up:

Yea its definitely harder to get 8gbs stable vs 4gb, just keep at it youll get it. :up:

Just when I think it may be stable it usually ends up doing something stupid. I'll keep it at all stock settings, except for volts, and then suddenly it'll fail Prime. I'm at 1.9v right now and I dont want to push higher. I'm not even sure I want to keep it at 1.9.

Edit: Just failed prime (quickly) at 1120mhz.

Maybe a Fellow P5Q series user has figured this one out. I can boot up to over 500FSB with my CPU and board, so want to settle on 481FSB 24/7. Heres the weird thing, all my voltages and settings are good but my PC9200 errors all over the shop in HCI memtest. Theres nothing wrong with the memory, I've tried it @ 1162 with a lower FSB and most other settings the same as below and its fine.

memory: 1156
Timings: 5-5-5-18
DRAM read control: disabled
DRAM read training: disabled
mem oc charger: enabled
Transaction booster: manual
PL: 8
Vcore: 1.38v

CPU/PCIE spread spectrum: disabled

I run mine up to 1.9 for higher clocks but I also keep a fan on them, if you dont have one on them id try it out.

It has to be this RAM combined with this board type causing the problems. With your moded BIOS (thanks btw) this board could hit 600mhz FSB on my old RAM. I kept a 24/7 setting of 520mhz FSB at ~4.2ghz. The Blades I cant keep stable at 1150mhz with anything above 345mhz FSB. [EDIT: I may be wrong, my motherboard may be dieing, I'm starting to look into this further....]

In order to get that screenshot I had 1.9v into the RAM, and 1.56v PLL. I was pretty unstable though.

mine were stable @ 1333 for 24/7
i bet i could get that set to do 1300+:D

I managed to get stable at 432mhz FSB and 1150mhz on the RAM. I dont think its going any higher than this.
