But I think the whole diagram thing needs work on anyway... I notice that yours is showing your USB Devices and your HDD's, mine doesn't show my HDD's but I put that down to them being RAID-0, but mine doesn;t show my USB devices either, I see, is it a mouse and a USB HDD, on yours, but on mine it doesn;t pick up my Logitech Mouse, or my USB Drive, or USB Speakers, printer, webcam, or well any of them at all...!!!

It doesn;t even detect my DVD-RW drive, again as its on the SATA controller which is configured in RAID mode...!!

In fact the only thing it does show really is the Gfx Cards, my RAM and my CPU..... so its not really that good or reliable at all... just a nielittle novelty gimmick for AOD I think...!!!

Your on a 620watt..It could be PSU being noisy or even the GPU4850 making a little noise....

I get no extra sounds though any devices..My sound is crisp and Clean ..I use a Audigy4 with Gaming headphones along with a 5.1 surround set up when i watch DVD's and burn disks.

Also in the BIOS i use CPU tweak enabled.. I dont overclock with AOD except to look at settings.

im using 2.8vdd and +4ACC ATM @ 3.514mhz 2400NB @ 1.65v cpu / 1.6v nb which gives me 1.55vid cpu and 1.46vid nb while using ACC.

I have not heard any sqealing or audio noise through my system with any Overclock i have done on the ASUS 79-T to date.

I had that issue with my M3A32 a bit, not much, only under heavy load and high voltage.

It very well could be the case(chokes)....Mine dosnt do it,,Unless im not pushing it enuff:rofl:

This is the first Mobo so far that hasnt made a peep..

I wouldnt rule out the Chokes under load and yes Maybe a Bigger PSU may help by keeping the power CLeaner under load...

Its all a gamble and by far way better than any SB600/SB700 in the power department..

keep eye on temps,, if thier not High or you dont get insane volt dips,, spikes,, i wouldnt worry about it.

BTW, don't put too much faith in SuperPi. It is by far the weakest example of system performance IMO, very dated and always favors Intel...

Try WPrime instead, it's a better measure of Multi-Core performance.

I've had a 78-T and I'm now running on the 79-T, I'm not a big Asus fan actually.. But the 79-T is MUCH/MUCH better and well worth the extra $50..

Hi welcome to the forums..

The M3A79-T is without doubt better for OC'ng than the 78-T as it has a better PWM section, essential when it comes to OC'ng high TDP CPU's like the Phenom 9950.

The M3A78-T is a good option if you are budget limited as it includes SB750, and Crossfire ability, although it will only give you Crossfire at x8/x8 PCI-E Link Width, rather than x16/x16 that you will get with the M3A79-T.

If you will not be using Crossfire then the M3A78-T will run a single card at full x16 Link Width, though I'm not entirely sure that this would be the case with a dual GPU single card like the 4870X2 etc....

Actually I've wondered about that as I almost got a DFI LP JR 790GX mobo to use for a HTPC, with a similar config to the M3A78-T but in mATX form rather than full ATX...

If anyone out there has a 790GX mobo and a 4870X2 or other dual GPU single card, can they confirm whether it runs at x16 or x8...???

JR runs @ x8, but that's essentially BW of 16x in PEG 1.1 terms ;)

hi there buddy and welcome to XS. I recommend the M3A79-T Deluxe. I have had two AMD boards and without a doubt this board is just far ahead of the competition. The power management is superb, and the power and reset buttons help out a lot if you have an open case like I did at one point. Look no further and spend the extra money. Buy the M3A79-T.

I know that PEG 1.1 x16 = x8 at PEG 2.0, but what I wasn't sure of was whether or not the 4870X2/4850X2 being a single card in the one slot would use the PEG 2.0 x16 available or whether it would drop down to x8 per GPU on the card.

After thinking about it a while, I realised that it would drop down to x8 per GPU.

I found with my 4850's in Crossfire that there was a difference between running at PEG 2.0 and PEG 1.1 in performance, even though there was no performance difference in running at x8/x8 PEG 2.0, and x16/x16 PEG 2.0

Dropping it down to PEG 1.1 would cause Crossfire to not configure correctly for me, at least with the early 4-series Catalyst drivers.... I havn't tried it recently...!!

The new DFI 790BX/sb750 is pretty sweet too,, Woulda been choice if it was out before i grabbed this one..

I agree. DFI's have always been great overclockers and definitely my choice if the M3A79-T was not out.

what's the latest bios everyone owning this board is using? i just flashed to 0602.ROM and the board is unstable. with the original shipping bios 0302 i can oc to 3.22Ghz and be stable, but with this bios, at 3.22Ghz and as soon as i enable crossfire, blue screen. also, anyone know why i don't get the extra options for setting pcie to 8x or 16x or autonomous switching for multi-gpu? i'm about to toss this board and go back to the dfi 790fx lan part dark.

i have found the latest bios to work best for me. However I think my favorite one is 0403, hands down.

what's the latest bios if you don't mind me asking? is it this 0602 that i flashed my board with? i want to try 0403, but i can't use the asus update windows app as it says the bios is older than the current bios and to use dos. i tried the EZ flash utility from the bios, but who freaking uses floppy drive anymore. any advice on how to flash to older bios thru dos?

I am ready to play.. Board actually arived today..tho it said 12-2-08 delivery...The 9950 125w is in and is JAAAB AA 0836EPCW. have to load a few drivers and update the bios...be back soon..

0603 is the latest, and I had to do the same, i just opened up the case and put my floppy there with the cable directly to it, flashed and then removed it again. Its the only way to do it that I know off bro.

dng: This is the easiest way Flash Bios:

1) DL the bios from Asus and unpack it.
2) Put the "BIOS.ROM" file in the root directory of a USB Flash Drive.
3) Leave the USB drive plugged in and reboot
4) Reboot and enter BIOS.
5) Open the "tools" tab and select "Asus EZ Flash"
6) The utility should open the flash drive (usually drive c:)

The you can flash it from there....

I flashed using a USB thumb drive with no problems at all. Was kinda strange it showed up in the EZ Flash as my C: drive which its not. I actually exited and made sure I didn't have the BIOS file still on my actual C: drive before starting again. 603 seems to work fine as far as I can tell haven't had any problems with it.

0603 is good to be honest, but I am not stable on that bios, on 0403 I am stable. Weird, but don't know why.

I got this board today and it seems very good and has plenty of settings to deal with, I'm very happy with it.

I did originally buy MSI "KA790GX" board which should have had the 790GX and SB750, but I did find out that it lacks both of em and is really an KA780G board. Only difference between these two is the sticker on the motherboard, under that it says KA780G which is printed straight to the motherboard itself. The other difference is the price, this "new" costs about 110euros and the older one only about 60euros, im very pissed with MSI right now and i didnt even get the comp to start with that board and it was very unstable when i did finally get the bios updated and the comp up and running, so i did have to buy this NICE M3A79-T :)

Im doing now 3.1GHz with 9950BE 0833CPMW JAAAB processor at 1.4 Vcore and idle temps are about 45C and load about 58C, cooled with Arctic Cooling A64 Freezer Pro which is greatly polished.
NB is now 2483MHz and the HT at same frequency. NB voltage at default levels. DDR2 is 2x2GB OCZ Reaper HPC 1066 @1100MHz 5-5-5-18-2T ganged mode @ 2.2V

Just settling up here, played some Left 4 Dead for about 3 hours and worked flawlessy :)
Superpi about 24secs and 3Dmark06 13500marks, w/ HD4850@670/1070MHz, cpu score 4400

Maybe I try higher clocks tomorrow, oh and the ACC is still disabled ;) Latest bios installed though.

Any ideas and settings to deal with? My first DDR2/AM2 board so its little confusing sometimes with so many different voltage and other settings :D I had Opt 165@2.85GHz and A8N-SLI, which did die about week ago, dunno what broke down, I think its the CPU without the heatspreader, it looks like the sides were cracked.

Ps. Express Gate is wonderful and sorry for bad english.

Ps2. Does the phenom still has the thing that it can froze down at idle? :/ Hope not.

welcome faior, great clocks so far. For stability at higher clocks however, try to keep your HT under 2000MHz and your NB under 2400 MHz as well. Once you find your max on the CPU you can try to higher those certain values and see how far they can go while still being stable. Also, your RAM try to run it un ganged it is better and you should see slightly better performance.

So far this board is pretty nice.. I have not used ACC and amd slow going up in speed testing as I go.. 3.0ghz stock v's was of course a breeze.. but this was on all my Phenom but the 9600BE. The timings are ok, but ram did not auto at 1066, it was 333 LOL.. don't no why.. But I set it and it is working..

I'm running Bios version "0602".... I flashed it right away, without testing the version that came intalled on the board.

I've actually had pretty good luck with it. I've got 3.2/2.77 stable on XP64 with reasonable V's (1.4/1.3), I don't run X-Fire or anything though.

I have a question for you folks who have had the board longer.

Any opinions on the best OC BIOS for a 1 card 4850 with 4Gb of ram and 64bit OS?

Since Chicken Patty seems to prefer "0403" I'll probably go ahead and try it tonight, seems like he's had the board longer than most...

You've also had pretty good results man, so I respect your opinions. :D

thank you very much for your help Dave, so it took long to reply. i did as you indicated with the bios in the root of a usb drive. use the tool in the bios ez flash util. it only recognize the A: drive which i assume is floppy. hrmm, i read the other posts that there's an 0603 bios. i wonder where i can grab this 0603 bios. i just wish i didn't flash this 0602 bios. with the original bios, the board was stable and now with this 0602 bios, the board is not stable at all. i'll search for the 0603 bios.

dng: You should be able to get legit Asus Bios from their site (including 0602, which is the one I'm using)...

If EZ flash doesn't come up with the Flash drive (usually c: ) try using the TAB key to scroll through the options until you find the BIOS file you want on the USB drive...

BTW, I've never heard of an 0603 bios, 0602 is the most recent on the Asus site...

Make sure you have the Flash Drive plugged in BEFORE you reboot, or else the Mobo won't recognize it... You can't plug it in while your in Bios, it has to be there when you reset.

Yeah bro, i've actually just flashed back to 0403, to me it has been the most stable bios and the less buggiest. when I bought this board there was no bios out yet other than the one they shipped with, but once I got the 0403, I saw a huger performance increase and my stability overclocking was much greater. I have since then used 0503, and 0604 and the worst was def. 0503, buggy buggy bios, and stability was horrible. So 0403 gets my vote bro, hands down in my book.

dng, if the lastest bios from the asus site (below) isn't good for you, please try the 0403 bios, it has treated me the best

From that link, choose your board, then choose the OS system you are running. Then got to the BIOS catergory and you'll see all four different BIOS available right now, I believe it is four.

Hello and thanks! And thanks for advices, i have now HT 2050MHz and NB 2250MHz, ok? or should i lower HT even more? How does these frequencies affect to performance?

And what voltages should i change for higher stability and oc? Example NB and HT volts, i havent got a clue about those.. still running default. And which settings are safe and ok to run with good air cooling?(read: how high can I set the volt levels?)

I've switched to OCZ PC2-9600 Reaper HPC Edition. 1200MHz/CL4 prime stable at 2.28V. Amazing and cool. :D

thank you all for your advice. i'm pulling my hair trying to get my system stable ever since i flash to this 0602 bios :(. i'm almost just about to go back to my old dfi 790fx board, but i'm going to keep on trying. my stability problem is that i'm losing overclocking ability, my crossfire setup is flaky or acts weird with this bios, random blue screen, and one little change in the bios and the system is completely unstable. this is getting frustrating. i guess asus board's never good for me. i wonder if i can sell it for cheap.

Did you reset bios after the flash.. I had too. I kept getting errors.. I no changes made to the bios yet,.. also, every chip is different.. some do better then others...

Here you go buddy, straight to the point

Hyper Transport (HT)

North Bridge basically handles communications among the CPU, RAM, AGP or PCI Express, and the southbridge.

So after reading the above, basically the higher you clock these things (NB, and HT) the faster they can communicate with the rest of the system. However just like the CPU, they get unstable at high speeds and require a lot of voltage.

I would suggest leaving the NB voltage and SB voltage auto for now, they work great for me like that. If needed then you can start adjusting them manually. when I run them Manual, I ran the HT at 1.26-1.28v, and the NB core at the same 1.26-1.28v. THe southbridge I think 1.24v is more than enough.

This is the maximum. :D

thank you all again for all the great advice. i'll try to tweak this board and bios more to see if i can resolve my problem. it could be my cpu doesn't work well with this board. it's a 5000+ BE am2. i got 4gigs of gskill ddr2 pc6400. i pretty much left everything on auto from memory to ht speed. i only overclocked the fsb to 230 with multiplier at 14. vcore is at 1.475 and everest reports it as 1.5. i'm trying to flash it back to 0403.rom bios, but somehow the usb drive is not recognized by ez flash. i'll try upping north bridge vcore and such to see what will happen. board is semi stable at all default settings. if i up the cas latency to 4, instant crashes. i can run these rams at 4-4-4-15 on the dfi board fine. i'll either use this bios for now and hope for a better bios soon or go back to the dfi board and sell this asus board. i really like the new sb 750 though. any more advice you guys can give? thanks in advance.

About the USB drive not being recognised by EZFlash..... is teh USB Key formatted as FAT/FAT32, I think it needs to be formatted as FAT32 for it to be recognised by EZFlash..!!

I've been wondering about the BIOS for this mobo as well, I flashed to the latest BIOS (0602) as soon as I received the mobo, before I had even installed Windows... and havn't tried any other BIOS, I've been thinking about trying an earlier revision, as the problems that were supposed to have been fixed with 0602, i.e. the USB Drive boot problem, where it resets the boot priority when a USB Device is connected, this problems is still happening with me....

I may well try an earlier BIOS and see if it helps OC'ng a bit...!!!

No harm in trying..:D:D

I recently had to flash the BIOS on an ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe because I had a no video in windows problem with a new 4850. <- of course there is no indication in the BIOS chagelogs that there have been any bug fixes - just CPU microcode updates...

Anyway I just put the BIOS on a CDRW disc and the ez flash from the BIOS worked fine.

alright, i'm back on 0403 bios. i'm still seeing the same instability. i left pretty much everything on auto. i up the fsb to 230 and multi to 14 which oc my 5000+ am2 BE to 3.22Ghz. i changed memory timing to DCT and changed CAS latency to 4 instead of the default 5. i tried a game in windows and instant blue screen in a few seconds. i changed CAS latency back to 5 or auto and everything seems stable again. is there a problem running 4-4-5-15 on this asus board? anyone got bios settings they can post so i can try please. thank you.

alright, i'm back on 0403 bios. i'm still seeing the same instability. i left pretty much everything on auto. i up the fsb to 230 and multi to 14 which oc my 5000+ am2 BE to 3.22Ghz. i changed memory timing to DCT and changed CAS latency to 4 instead of the default 5. i tried a game in windows and instant blue screen in a few seconds. i changed CAS latency back to 5 or auto and everything seems stable again. is there a problem running 4-4-5-15 on this asus board? anyone got bios settings they can post so i can try please. thank you.

Just out of curiosity, is there a BIOS that will allow you to use 4 sticks of DDR2-1066 on this board?

that I am not sure off :( I know the 0403 bios for example had some memory issue fixed and stuff, but don't know if that was one of them.

So, does this latest bios already support AM3? Just wondering cause the Asus-site says that the board supports AM3 :)

hello again im looknig for a few people that can explain how install raid on this motherboard as i just odered 2x500gig 32mb cashe SATA , i have been reading that i will need a floppy drive ,but i dont have one at hand is there another way of installing raid without a floppy drive?

Well, it survived for its 9 hours idling! :) Didnt jamm or anything else weird, was there where I left it. And played 3 hours of L4D, worked flawless.

I lowered the vcore now, 1.39V, gotta keep testing.. 3.3GHz seems to be too far away for now.. :/ dont know what setttings to change. Btw. its nice to see how much temps go lower when the vcore changes even a bit. :o

No it wont kill performance ..

You can actually run pretty much the same CPU clocks and usually the NB can go go just as high. It will also be a little more stable with pcDDR2,,6400/800mhz depending on you overall ram timing and the NBmhz you choose to run...Ganged will be best with 32bit OS,, 64bit can take advantage of Unganged with a small hit in single threaded apps..

In all its about finding the right NB freqency and Ram freqency no matter if your using 1066 or 800...The main differance is you can run Lower latency with 800 vs 1066..Again it comes down to how good you can tweak the system to perform..

EXample:

High Freqency GANGED with 1150+mhz ram,,Max NB

any way, I think this problem is not a problem but a not-completed or inperfected feature, designed for those novice who doesn't know any thing about boot priority, so ASUS made it easy for them to boot by resetting the boot priority if it was changed by any one...

I think if ASUS want to add a feature like this ( wich is nice ) it has to be an option enabled by default and we - experts - can disable it if we wish, the option will not reset, but only alter the boot so the USB flash will boot first...
and maybe some nice option when booting like some laptops wich has another shortcut to enter a special boot menu wich let you choose wich device to boot from regardless the boot priority ( I have this on my laptop )

do you find the Sandra memory bechmark to be consistent? I have never found it to be consistent at all; running consecutive runs of that benchmark I would see low numbers initially that then climb to a mamimum but with so much variation it's hard for me to trust the numbers. then again I always run it unbuffered and with the optimisations off.

oh well the ram i got should be better than the pc-6400 i was going to put in there

hey i dont OC but i heard that all you have to do with this board is set the multi to 15x and you get an instant 3GHZ OC, is that true?

Yup pretty much..Stock volts should get ya that...If anything you may need 1.35v for CPUvolts but not much more than that.Especially if its a 125watt phenom . The 1066ram runs just fine on this mobo..

to get max clocks i usually run the 1066 divider and push the Ram above 1150mhz:D

Ive used 11.5 cpu and up to 17.5x while using 1066mhz divider.. If you use 13-16.5x multi Depending on your Chip the 1066 divider can run 1100mhz+ easy..

yyyeah done some more testing, seems like 3.2GHz, 1,44Vcore, NB 2150, HT 1950, mem 1140 5-5-5-15 unganged does the trick. 24/7 stable and not very hot. Wont freeze at idle and loves 3D too. 2350NB and 2150HT restarts or jamss in 3D after a while, so does 1.4Vcore.

Im sticking to this, it aint bad cause I was waiting something like 3GHz. Im very satisfied, though the memory may have some more clocks in them ;)

btw, superpi 23.6sec with this, i think its ok. time. Wprime 12.5s or so(something running on the background)

edit. Anyone got past +4% ACC with this board? And which bios?

well I am using stock heatsing.. but have 80mm fan hovering right above them..it was getting a lil warm ..but cold to the touch now.

cdnbum88, on my M3A32 i had water cooled the motherboard, including NB, SB, and mosfet.

However, I still have not put the water blocks on as im working on a 2nd loop for my water system as we speak.

Ok, now I need some of your advices cause I dont have time today too much to play with the settings. I did try Crysis benchmarks earlier today and noticed that the comp restarted after a minute running the bench(everything else ran fine), and I decided then to change some settings and lowered the HTT and memory MHz to default. So now 16x200 and 1066 like normal, NB 2200 and HT 2000. Pretty clear yeah? Old setup can be seen above somewhere. When I changed those it didnt crash at all even if i played it with max settings 1920x1200 and looped about 30 minutes..

So the question is, what could have caused the restart? Didnt change any voltage, just mem, nb and ht-link MHz´s(actually ht raise 50MHz). I wanted to bench with this because the system was restarted last night once when i was sleeping :/ But maybe I have now get rid of the restarting problem though, hope not. Gotta test some more later this week(busy now :( )

You are right that benchmark has a huge variation between runs. What do you mean by running it unbuffered? I use fusion to disable unneccessary background tasks that helps abit.

Some status update, seems like I was running my memory too high, at OCZ pages it says they are 5-5-5-15 but in real life it should have been 5-5-5-18! Now its much more stable(running some AOD stability test, runned fine with 18 setting, then I changed it to 15 and in one minute it gave an erro, back to 18 and works fine again.

Now doing just some little testing with this and hope to get some results :)


Btw, some of you were talking about bios updating and saying that it is not possible to downgrade the bios in windows, well I had this Asus A8N-SLI premium before and there is a tap in asus update in options menu "bios downgradeable" when you turn that on it updates bios to previous version easily. I havent never been using anything else than the Asus updater for windows, and with A8N I had very very much of bios updating in 2 years. Worked everytime flawless. :)

But im not so sure does it work with this board too as some people says it isnt possible in windows. Althought there is the tap in options still ;)

edit. Ok, done 6 hours AOD stability test and ran fine 3.1GHz@1.39Vcore and mem 1100MHz 5-5-5-18, ACC on Auto.

Anyone sitting in front of their mobo right now that can give me the dimensions of the NB?

I am looking to aftermarket WC it and there are no 'specific' water blocks for it, but some look universal, but I want to make the dimensions are the same.

Then where the push pins are at.

You will not get better results but the variation between the results is lower with fusion on.

Would be very interesting if this is an 790GX only limit or if the 790FX chipsets also are affected with the new SB750. My memkit's clocked better on the DFI790FX/SB600 so i think i'm really hitting an chipset limit here.

When I set in the BIOS the core voltage to 1.526 I got this error and it would proceed.

I am sure this is a safety feature...how do I change it if I want to?

I haven't heard of a fix for this yet. I've gotten that plenty of times, no worries, just watch your temps :)

I bought recently this meter because I was curious if my 750w Corsair was too much for this sytem.These are the results with 1,475vcore and 3.450mhz (daily use):
*During booting 300-400w
*During the loading of windows bar in black screen you can see 500+w
*In windows Idle mode around 330w
*In windows Full load mode 500+w.Sometimes maxed at 600+

So, I guess it was a good choice to hit a 750watt psu..

AOD setting? too bad i can't use AOD as i'm running windows server 2k8. also, i think i'm missing some bios settings, especially in the chipset section under pci express. i don't see the options for port #2,3, and so on. i wish i can access these settings to change the pcie setting to 16x instead of 8x. i have my two 4850 in crossfire connected to both blue slot which should be running at 16x in crossfire. i know they're not in 16x mode but 8x mode as gpuz shows that. btw, some specs

Hmm, this is very interesting. I have an Antec Neo HE380W psu with three +12V rails, 15A each. Well, with this board it gives a nice 12.03V for that line and with load to all cores its about 11.98V or so(atleast according to asus pc probe), with previous boards it gave 11.8V and even 11.5V without some bios update to the board(dunno why), and it didnt even start very often with that board(MSI KA790GX without bios update) and the whole comp. shutdown sometimes.

Well, now I have this asus.. works flawless and starts everytime etc, BUT when i get to some point in OC it totally restarts the whole machine everytime(usually in LOAD ofcourse), the voltage readings are the same 11.98V .. just wondering if I only have PSU issue, and not CPU in OC. Its 3.1GHz 24/7 LOAD stable, but even with 3.125GHz it restarts or jamms within 1-60minutes in load. .. ?

Seems best results are archieved with unbuffered and fusion enabled.
I did an similar test few weeks ago. I ran the benchmark 40 times with fusion on/off and that time the derivation was lower with fusion enabled.

i´ve got some problems with thermal throttleing when i run prime at 3.3ghz and 1.5cpuvid.
i was running prime at 254x13 1.475v+2%acc and got a bluescreen after about 20mins. so i thought i just bump up the voltage and give it another go.
but after setting the cpuvid to 1.5v the mainboard puts down the cpu multi to 7.5 and the vid to 1.05v when i reach temps around 50°C in coretemp.
i disabled the temp monitoring in bios by setting it to "ignored", but it´s still doing this.
how can i get rid of this? or is it a cpu internal protection?

make sure you have cool N quiete disabled or any other temp/voltage altering feature in your BIOS. Once you disable all it should not happen.

If you can post pictures of your BIOS settings and we can check it out for ya :)

It's just a stupid ASUS feature. You can't disable it. :shakes:
