I lot of the guys on that competion are likely using reduced quality over and beyond LOD. I can run a test tonight to show you the difference it makes if you wish. I don't run it because a line has to be drawn somewhere and to me that goes a bit too far.Quote:

This is one of the reasons I suggested no LOD at the start but the common concensus was that LOD should be allowed. I normally use LOD because it is a tweak in that often there is a sweet spot, ie 3.6 or 4.9 or whatever that needs to be found.Quote:

well the resistors to give the correct voltage i completelmucked up using a spade resistor. Thus i cannot find a way of using this one, so i got thinking. Seen other people design them etc, then i remembered oen of my other cards.
What i have done, is got a old x850 pro i had, and connected a wire from it to my 8400gs. Thus the memory voltage is still being done on the 8400gs, but the vgpu is being done by the x850 pro. May jump over the memory one as well to control that.
First thing. if i am using another card to power it, do i still count in this competition?
apart from that, i shall work on getting it going again properly. The x850 has A vid area where i can choose any voltage from 1v to 2v in 0.05v steps.

haha. thanks for the interest stevil. I will do. card kept cutting out, so i have linked the mem as well. only two wires, and solved everything. The gpu core right now is around 1.35-1.4v, and the mem i got a link giving 2.0-2.05v, so about right areas. GPU is going to be increased though. Get pic in like 5-10 minutes!

well so far, the vgpu droops like crazy. so 1.4v idle, 1.3v load. memory is good however, staying to 2v solid.
Just bumped the vgpu mod to 1.6v so see how much it droops, and what i can manage. Good thing is i am having fun, and learning!
well at the moment, it keeps dropping out at different intervals. I think the main reason in the OCP on the x850.work on it after dinner :)

Why limit det "standard" class to air only? Water isn't that much better IMO. You can run air outside in -20C, but you can't run water inside in +20C. I find that kinda silly. Anyone agree?
(The reason I write this is because I found out that my old ati 9800pro waterblock fittet perfectly :D)

and they say 780i is a poor chipset. Not for 3dmark it's not. It does a 10.1s SuperPi 1M as well air cooled after only 4 hours of setup. :D
Now, been talking to the guys at Futuremark, Risto says this about publishing scores.
"the fix went live today, it was a case of wrong component information passed to the method which was then used to override the correct component information. Fastest way to fix this is to unpublish and then re-publish the project so the change reflects to the search table in the DB. I will make a script today that remaps all display adapters on published 3DMark 2001 Projects so the searching table will contain the projects correctly."
So if you cannot publish a result try unpublish and publish again. I also asked them to change that when you do a compare you have to put the criteria in again rather than just go back to the list to see what happens.

Finally realized that my PCI-E x16 speed was at x1 on my P35-DS3P when after spending some time pushing my card, I was still only scoring around 7400 in '03 no matter how much I pushed the clocks.
Changed to my MSI Neo2-FR and am getting close to 8500 at the same clocks.
Ok ownage, I just checked your nature and with your original score you are getting 140fps with 800core and only 450 memory which is far higher than anyone else
Nature is memory limited and I only get 135 with 835/565. Stevil does 864/475 and gets less also. We are obeying rule 4 on the front page for this competion unlike the dutch comp so you may wish to resubmit taking this into account. You may not have seen this being a late entrant.

Temps seem fine, vmod is good, but as soon as I go over 1.35v it reboots and wont screen post till I go back to or under 1.35v.
In 01, I can run everything other than CH @ 740 on that vcore, if I could just get more volts into her it may just fly, or blow up. But I'm happy either way :)

Any ideas would be great, if I get it working right I my just mount my pot on it with zip ties, just for fun.
DragonOrta, try changing PCI-E frequency to 105 and PCI-E voltage to +0.1 on that Gigabyte board. That should stop it from falling down do PCI-E 1x.
Not realy, power management of the xfx cards dieing in a straight line overhere,....in fact , the fets are burning literly of the cards, and cooling was sufficient (-8 air) ....if you want to go realy high you need external supply.Quote:

tried to bench my card yesterday but it went a bit wrong. The thing is, i didnt pay atention to the vgpu. Had quite a good run, 1080/2862/472 wich gave me a score of 164.8 fps in nature.
But sudenly the card started to do weird things, couldent even finish a run on very stable settings anymore. Then i looked over at the multimeter and saw " 2.78"
ofcourse i set it back to 2.3 ish and tried again. No luck.
This morning i woke up and saw my card had some weird colors round the gpu.
I've had the board for a while and done so much juggling around of settings that I give up when it goes back to x1 speed. The only thing that gets it back to x16 for me anymore is a BIOS flash. :down:Quote:

so far i can run the mem at 465mhz, chilling the ram gave me at least 30mhz :)

Yo johnny. I have the same issue. I just use Rivatuner for my overclocking, and monitor the clocks on it as well. Gona be putting the card back in again today for another go. need to check ORB though as well. What kind of gain do you reckon i would get going from vista to XP?

I think the memory VREGs are too weak to handle the current draw and that is causing our "limit" for a lot of the cards.
I suspect my mod fell off because the transistor got hot enough to desolder it....
Memory vregs is not the problem i think, that one is not realy high curent.
The core is though, my 1kw psu shutting down on me ...card is at the 30A 5v line but that one is not sufficient. :eek:
Maybe cooling down with fans is a solution stevil, if you think thats the problem, cooling youre fets is always a good idea, they burn literly of the cards overhere.
The mosfets controlling vcore are quite cool on my card but the mosfet which provides memory voltage will burn my finger...
And people said 1KW PSu's were overkill, they obviously never had to deal with the power requirements of the mighty 8400GS. :rofl:
It'd ue to be -2C tonight so I am going to try for 900Mhz at 2V on the stock cooler. Bit of a suicide run probably. With ambient below zero and 200cfm fan blowing over it heat on the mosfets etc is not an issue, the issue is that my qimonda memory seems to be deteriating over time, originally it could do 575 but now am down to 550-565. That negates the gpu increase of course so it is a bit like treading water.

Well I spent 4 hours in temps of 0C to -2C and gained absolutely nothing whilst got more and more grumpy until I decided screw it and went inside.
It started off with finding the sweet spot on the gpu volt wise which was 1.03v. This gave me 48C at idle which is Ok. Normal idle is 19C in the shed. Then I went up to 2v but got saturation as idle was 65-66C which is too high. I reseted and put proper paste on the stock heatsink but no better. I was thinking of modifying a cpu heatsink but then again my memory on the cards started of great and then went down hill. I almost managed another 27K run but then it hung on on car lo.
I tried 3dmark03 and after some low 700/540 runs to warm up tried 700/550 and it locked up twice in GT4 almost at the end.
What a rubbish evening. Somebody get me a Zotac GDDR3 card to save my sanity ... :)

Sounds like it's time for a new card Andy. This DDR2 Zotac is pretty good, 1.53V - stock memory voltage :)
The cap ratings (solid) on this thing are pretty amazing in itself, especially for a low end card. If they we're doing this kind of thing on high-end we'd all be buying Zotac cards.

Got back in the Shed this morning and applied a quick pencil volt mod to the memory to push it from 1.94v to 2.0v and what do you know I can do 570 mem again :rolleyes: Either that is a sweet spot, the qimonda does not like cold or else my card is just all over the place. After 4 hours freezing my butt off last night it is so easy this morning. Sadly it is already getting too hot in the Shed because although outside air is 5.4C the shed is already up to 15C as it acts as a heatsink with it's construction of wood with heat absorbing waterproof felt roof.
I have been doing some 700/570 runs in nature this morning to look at the effects of LOD. I also changed down from 69.21 drivers to 58.22 as they gave me an extra 800 points with a couple of 8600GT's I am also playing with at the moment.
Here's nature with various LOD settings
LOD/FPS
3.6=132.3
3.8=133.2
4.0=134.4
4.3=135.0
4.5=134.7
4.8=133.9
5.0=133.0
So sweet spot is 4.3 for me rather than the normal 3.3-3.6 range for 6 and 7 series nvidia. Interestingly Zeus told me that the 8800GTS likes 4.9 so there is obviously a need to help reduce the textures on the later cards that are texture limited with 64, 128 and 256bit buses. Of course this does not matter for all the new shader intensive games, but when you are running only PS 1.1 like 2001 nature uses then the texture processing becomes a bottleneck.
Just doing some LOD runs on dragothic....

If you're going to try for dragotics best lod, don't forget to close 3d mark and start a new one after each test or even better, reboot in between each test.

I think for DL I found that something around 2.6 gave me the best results. Or maybe that was CL.
Actually it was both of them. And I found 4.1 to give me highest FPS for Nature.

Firstly sorry to see your card blew up Jan, time still to get another if you have the money and inclination.
Nice work Rol-Co, first person to hit 1GHz on core :toast: it must have done a fair few runs now at that speed so it's a tough little chip. Obviously the memory speed is holding you back big time which cannot be helped.
Hows it go in 03? Your huge shader "powaa!" should pay dividends I would have thought.

Finally got the memory working OK. Lost some gpu power but the trade off was worth it.
800/1987/570 1.91v gpu and 2.01v mem. LOD 4.3 for nature and 2.8 for all other tests. 28021 http://service.futuremark.com/result...4&resultType=6

Arg, my memory can´t go over 420. But the core does 940, I will add some more volt to the memory tomorrow.
