Stick it to 'em guys! You deserve that spot more than they do.
Well, I finally got the new quad together. The Asus Arctic Square was a shade too tall to put the case cover back on, but it's on a high shelf and probably gets better ventilation anyway.
I tried about a dozen times to install - 1. kubuntu em64t, 2. ubuntu em64t 3. ubuntu x86 - all ver. 7.10. In each case, towards the end of the install i would get some artifacts on the screen (lines of hash marked rectangles), then I would see a blank desktop for about a second and then the display reported "no signal". So finally I had to abandon installing it and go back to XP. Maybe I'll give version hardy heron (???) a try.
Anyway, it is now crunching. Mildly overclocked to about 2.9ghz. Will let it settle in for a few day and get it up to at least 3.4. Until then, might add about 12-13k pts to the totals. However got the other quad up to 3.6ghz so that will help too. It's a little strange because that one had been at 60c degrees running at 3.4ghz, but I guess the paste must have settled in or something since I was able to bumpt it another .2 with no prob - just raised vcore (1.3????).
Noticed your comment highlighted above..A little thing that sometimes gets overlooked but what is the air temp "on that high shelf"?
In a room with 8ft ceilings there can easily be 30F difference between waist high and at the 7ft height..
Just an example: I had the WC clover sitting on top of the air cooled one.
Moved it down just 2 ft onto the table and temps dropped 4C..
I don't like them on the floor as they become dust magnets..
I have a thermometer on the shelf and its about 78F. There's also a fan on the next shelf up - mainly for the 2 DVR's. I had planned to put it about 4 feet lower, but can't do that with the cats around and an open case. Plus I've got 2 120mm Scythe fans in the case.
Hey - did you ever find your friend's cat?
ok, sounds good..Yes, seen the cat twice in 5 days so she's here..
Smoothed out her food in the dish to see if she was still around at first..
Next morning I could see she'd eaten.
Still clueless as to where she's hiding during the day but screw it, she's here and safe, thats all I care about..:D
Very sly - happy to hear that.
All my quads are back online :)
Looks like we got beat today. :(

Heh! Sure enough. By only 5971 points. That is one Core 2 Duo...
Guess I better get busy and put that C2D back together.
I guess with the time change the new time for stats is 5 PM?

Hey Dave, how many points are WUs worth on a Clover rig?
After I saw that miniscule point differential it caused me to check that rig and see if it was holding out on me. It was...
11/10/2007 6:00:05 PM|World Community Grid|Reporting 24 tasks
Hmmm. I checked the rest of 'em ( 'cept for the ones, out front here, that I always check first thing when I get home ).
On my old main machine "Zippy", I found these sitting there, ready to report...
11/10/2007 6:32:47 PM|World Community Grid|Reporting 10 tasks
And I found a few others, maybe six of 'em, with 2 to 4 WUs ready to report.
OK, my bad. But I was just too damned lazy after working my day off to go around and check all the friggin' rigs. I usually check that Clover rig, though... if I go back that way.
That old line:" Rome wasn't built in a day" holds true for great teams also.
There are ups and downs but the trend here is much better than anyone could have expected a year ago.
We have 265 guys competing with the biggest BBS in Japan with 20 times our numbers, yes, almost 20 times and the same is true for Easynews and we're matching one and more than 1/2 of the other.
If we never catch either we've still made a hell of an accomplishment considering the amount of people we have.
Of course, that "ain't gonna happen".
There will be a day that we surpass Team2ch and then go on to pass Easynews in the totals..
It will happen my friend.
I don't think it, I know it.
It was my fault, i did not come back on time :(
Dave , it's all your fault this time . You forgot to ship my cpu , now look what you've done :D
:sofa:
Looks like we got whipped good today. WTF? :(

A small part of the blame is mine (piddly little rigs of mine don't add up to much) because my rigs were down most of the day while I was applying polyurethane to my new shelving stand. Damn particle board was out-gassing so bad that I could not stand it anymore.
What a difference a little Min Wax water based polyurethane makes, now no more burning eyes and nose.
Don't look at me. http://smileys.on-my-web.com/reposit...others-126.gif New quad is up. Did almost double the number of points I normally average and its only on 2.9 ghz. Will bump that up to at least 3.2 in a couple days.http://smileys.on-my-web.com/reposit...l/cool-045.GIF
Has anyone noticed a points dropoff when switching to hcc units from the faah units? It looks like I have dropped a few thousands a day since switching. I know a lot of people are now only running the cancer units. Maybe this is contributing to our dropoff the last couple of days
I was thinking the same thing. Also, there are fewer of those really short DDDT work units which I think boosted individual and team averages.
I was just looking at the global stats and noticed they were down from 1-2 weeks ago.
I suppose the only way of knowing for sure is disconnecting from the cancer project for several days to see if your individual numbers improve. Of course, some people don't want to do that because they consider the cancer project to be very important, and I understand and respect that.
I don't know what the answer is..a little frustrated myself with output.
I watch the numbers and know what they should be for myself and they aren't where they should be.
Got my new elec bil friday..Dropped from $300.00 to $186.00..
Used no AC during 1/2 that month, shut down the DX3600 and the sossa, added the quad..Also first month using some of those new 13w 5 year light bulbs in the kitchen. There's one 3 bulb fixture that tends to be on almost all the time..app 6 weeks ago I sprung for 1 5 pack of these new fancy low wattage bulbs..3x13w versus 3x100..supposed to last 5 years and $13.00 for the 5 pack..
about the 5-year thing . . . uhhhhh . . . don't count on it.
I replaced every bulb in my house over a year ago and of the lights that are on almost continuously, it seems like there's a 50-50 chance that they'll only make it about a year. I still think it's worth it though. The bulbs are down to less than $3 each if you get them at Costco, Sam's Club, etc. Since a 100watt bulb uses about $8.64 (@ $0.12/kwh) and 23 watt equivalent uses about $2, you save twice that for every month you use them 24/7. Can't beat that with a stick.
If everyone is talking about "Compact Fluorescent" bulbs then there are some things that you should know...
1) They contain Mercury which is a hazardous metal and if the bulb is broken you risk Mercury absorption in your body which never leaves and builds up to toxic levels. To have the area professionally cleaned up can run from $2,000-$3,000 dollars. Also if you don't turn them into a hazardous waste recycle location they end up in landfills where they pollute the earth and can get into the drinking water supply and cause bad health issues.
2) They are only made in China and China is bringing on average one coal fired power plant per week and since China has NO air quality standards or expensive scrubbers on the power plants you are actually aiding in the destruction of the planet to save yourself a couple of bucks. <gets off soap box>
All fluorescent lights use mercury in one form or another, including the ubiquitous long tubes.
Also, experts say the mercury threat from the energy-efficient bulbs has been overblown.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...fls-bulbs.html
ok, I'll make everyone happy. When they wear out I will store them in a padded box in my closet. They will be there till I'm dead with a note on the box to save for eternity..
In the meantime they are saving me money and that I like.
Issue solved.:D
Standard fluorescent light tubes use mercury vapor. Electricity excites those vapors. This causes the so-called fluoresce which produces the light. Don't ever drop one of those tubes. They shatter into a million pieces. Takes forever to clean up.
That's today's science lesson. Class dismissed.:D
Just mercury, eh? Half surprised there not painted with lead, and turn to GHB when you get them wet. ;)
Wish the price of LED lighting was less. Even more efficient and I like the spectrum of light better. $30 a bulb...sheesh:(
-SS
1) Current CFL bulbs have way less mercury than previous.
2) LED bulbs is the way to go, i'm watching the prices go down for the last year from 75$ to 30$ for a decent bulb.
3) I've checked all aspects of solar power to have electricity, and i am installing it in my new house. The system is fairly easy, and in the next weeks, government here will instantiate a nice law that will give me back 3 or 4 times the price for the electricity i produce through the solar cells, which will bring down to 5 years the 'amortization time' for the whole system...
Unfortunately America is not as enlightened as your country when it comes to alternative energy. The cost of installing solar panels is beyond the financial reach of many Americans. Some home builders are installing panels in new houses. So attitudes are changing a little.
Really weird the US doesn't give more incentive for people to install solar panels, it's really an easy solution, and you have plenty of areas in the US with plenty of sun...
Been in a developer conference 2 years ago in Palm Springs ( Cali ) and was overwhelmed by the amount of wind turbines i saw over there, so i was under the impression you guys had a few years ahead :-)
There is a very large wind farm about an hour's drive from my home. It's located in the Altamont Pass and is one of the most famous wind farms in the world (see picture below). But those giant turbines are all owned by the utility companies. Wind power for the average homeowner is not very practical because you need a turbine with a very long rotor span to generate enough electricity to power a home. The bigger wind turbines are very expensive. Also, zoning laws probably forbid the installation of large turbines in densely-populated areas.
America is still, for the most part, an oil-loving nation.
A few months ago I researched the cost of installing solar panels here.
House is nothing special..2200sq ft split level, well insulated for the timeframe it was built(1979)
To generate 2700KWH/month would take an investment of $78,000.00 just for the parts, no labor..
Using a $300.00 month current(summer) elec cost that would be 21.67 years payback and that doesn't include any interest on the loan required to do the job.
Just not practical in this country to do it and that is a real shame given the current costs of oil,etc not to mention the "green" effect that could be added if this was done on a major scale in the USA.
(Stops before I start to rant!)
Ive crunched some numbers as I'm involved in a family business that build "green" homes and the economics are different for retrofits as they are for new building.
New "green" homes only cost 10-15% more to build than their traditional counterparts. This is utilizing smaller homes with much better insulation, geothermal, solar, community wind, renewable materials, and water permeable concrete. People are willing to pay 20-25% more for such homes and they cost 60% less to operate as well as higher resale values. You also get better zoning considerations usually, allowing for more coverage.
Economies of scale play a large part in making it a profitable venture that you just dont get from retrofitting older homes with newer technology. However, there are new innovations coming that might make retrofits more appealing and cost-effective though they will still be less competitive than their new-built counterparts. Its best to time, plan, and do any of those installs to coincide with a major remodel of the house as it will pretty much require that anyways - just prepare for an extra $100k-$200K depending on what youre going to put in. Whatever you dont amortize will likely be extracted on sale as people are willing to pay premiums for it, and homes sell quicker.
-SS
That's excellent for the guy building or buying new but what about the rest of us? I like where I live. Good people, no crime, etc. I'd love to do solar but it's not practical.
What we need is a "in" with a solar panel manufacturer.
The old line "I can get it for you wholesale" comes to mind.
The cost of the panels is half the problem - prolly less than half actually. Its the new roof, conduit, drywall repairs, electrical panel, permits, etc. Then theres the incidental environmentals ; diminished output due to your northern latitude, 1979 insulation specs, and 30 YO AC system. All this requires you to put up more solar to compensate for without the return.
Like I said, it will likely require a major remodel to the house in order to be cost-effective. Reducing your demand is half the problem and isnt cheap to fix.
You could probably reduce the cost of the panels just by getting a few neighbors together and negotiating/buying together.
-SS
To avoid retro-fitting costs, wouldn't it make sense to install free-standing panels away from the house? Of course this assumes you have enough land to do this.
Roof is new(2 years) house is WELL insulated, drywall I can do,elec panel is not an issue, AC is 2- window units, one upstairs and one down,12,000 and 6500BTU, and the 12,000 unit doesn't run unless the day is going to be over 85F.
The issue is strictly in the panel cost and the demand is because of the PC's:D
Next?;)
Easy house to do, just the damned panel cost:
You could always turn off some of those hungry power suckers:stick: Runs and hides from the burning wrath:sofa::D
They require more land, a fair bit more. those tracking arrays are much more efficient, but they arent small or cheap. One array is about 10x15 - 150 sqft. For someone like Dave that could mean 3-4 arrays. Also they need to have relatively short wire runs to the inverters otherwise you start losing. Might have to cut down trees. Theyre also kinda ugly IMO - I'd imagine you could piss off your neighbors, at which point they'll probably plant a tree and shade your array.
-SS
Interesting. I think I'll pass on solar for now.:D
Regarding LED bulbs, one of the downsides I've heard about them, besides cost, is the amount of light they throw out. A lot of people complain the light tends to be directional and not very bright. Some don't like the fluorescent glow of CFL's, but they do provide enough light for most rooms. I use one in the lamp that sits on my computer desk.
Hmmm, IDK about that. I thought they had to be flashed in. I wouldnt want to rely on silicone. With the heating cooling of the array and the roof I'd think it would work loose. If water got under it and froze that would help that process dontcha think?
Sounds like you could put an array in the back, as long as the house doesnt shade it in the winter. Might be the best bet for you. Those pines to the west will give you problems, but it might be OK as it will only block afternoon sun, and your panels will be less efficient with warmer afternoon temps.
-SS
Edit: On second thought: I really DONT like the sound of that mounting system. That roof and those mounts will have to stand for 25+ years up there. You dont want to have to rip them off to fix something.
Yeah? With your luck you'll live to 97 like your Mom. Up there every weekend on a ladder with a tube of silicone. I can see how youre going to go...falling off a ladder fixing your damn leaky roof! :ROTF:
-SS
Actually very comfortable on the roof..Worked off ladders when I was younger and a non issue, so far, but yea, see where your heading.
Lets assume that I would/could deal with the mount issue, it's getting the panels cheap that is the real issue.
We need a contact inside that industry who understands the purpose of what we do with these machines and wants to help.
I'm not looking for someone to give me the parts, just sell them to me at a price so that my bum doesn't hurt while I write the check..:D
www.nanosolar.com ... Become a certified installer/distributer of Solar window awnings, etc for NH and make a fortune. :)

It's true the led lights tend to be directional, plus the led light is not dimmable. They took care of the issue by putting hundreds of leds in one bulb, each line of leds difusing differently, and also making it dimmable but turning on/off more leds every time...
Finally, the led light does not get hot, has a myriad of different colors and applications, can be installed in tough places etc...
2008...As you can see they are taking Private placement investments, and are doing some large governmental contracts to get their capacity up. But its a rollin. The applications for the stuff is only limited by imagination.

That's what we northerner's call "Snow"..Actually that is what is left in the first week of May that year!:D
Now for real snow, we had what we called the "Blizzard of 78"
26" of snow over 2 days..Feb4 and 5,1978..I remember, the 5th was my 26th birthday, shut down the whole state of Mass and a few others..
2003 was nasty, yes, also remember that there were 25 years of technological advances between them.
In 1978 they knew it was coming..2 major storms back to back, just one of them sat here and didn't move.
I had a house right on Salem,Mass harbor then and was a "new Dad"..
Oldest was 7 months old then.Had waves breaking against the side of the house..Fun night..Went to work in the am and took me an hour to walk 2 city blocks..7ft drifts in the street, hoping from porch to porch to get by them.
It was one hell of a week..:D
Beat again! This is getting old...:(

I agree. It appears easynews has upped their output, most likely as a reaction to our increase. I think it just took a little while to do so.

What can I say..We had an excellent day..They had better..
Tomorrow we start again.
We had a great day, our team is steadily improving. Let's not get discouraged by their numbers, rather let's celebrate ours. If our numbers are making them work harder then our team is achieving its goal of furthering the research.
Our team will remain the greatest inspiration to others. We are David to their Goliath.
50k for me today  I guess thats where all my points are from the last few days. I have been averaging around 38k, but have been less than 35k for a few days. I was thinking that switching to the cancer units had dropped my points, but I guess it's just the slow quorum.
The loss due to the shift of some people to HCC?
I got the opposite effect when I switched to cancer units. My points per day went up about 500 (2500 to 3000) and points per hour from 85-90 to 100.
I'll take a quad and call Sig in the morning.;)

Hmm since retweaking my RAM on the maximus, I am slowly going for #1 in average points per hour of runtime. Cant wait to get that penryn and my other rig online :)
Need penryn :)
I'm not sure how I did it, but I locked BOINC off the net - there's four completed units just chilling out here, and have been here for a day or two. :/
Mmm cisco IOS...
And Dave I remember that dump, it took the servers quite some time to catch up with the processing of the daily stats as I recall:stick:
Victor may do that many per day but at least he doesn't do it all in one go:D
