This picture was properly ruined by super yellow road lights, heavy lens flares and what not. A little level, brightness and contrast tinkering and the stars are out again.
My 7D is so much more pp friendly than 50D, very satisfied.
It's a 2 stroke SRX 700 engine that decided the heavy abuse was too much to handle, and a ring was snagged on the exhaust port at 100+MPH.
And yes it was taken with a iPhone 4.

35mm f1.8 AF-S on a D3100.
I was near the minimum focus distance for that lens, however.
Decent shot, maybe a little over exposed.
That was one of the first shots with that camera. I now have it stopped down -2/3, since it tends to overexpose. I have 1K shots on the camera now, just screwing around getting used to it...
Im ready to take some shots at CES... They might even be OK.

I never even attempted a HDR shot on a DSLR... Did you do this handheld with some auto HDR mode?

There is no auto HDR in my camera, and I only shoot P&S right now.
Yes I did this handheld, but for a legit HDR, you are supposed to do the shots on a tripod since you will blend the pictures together.
But if you really did this handheld, you can always select the "Align source images" on Photomatix (that's the software most people use for HDRs).

A short time exposure would look real cool on those shots.
I have a couple like that but I never liked the way they turned out, I will look at them and put one of them up.
That image is surprisingly noisy for a ISO 100 shot... Is f22 necessary for what you want to achieve? There is quite a bit of defraction on the kit lens at f22. Did you sharpen it in post to compensate? I would think a D5000 would give you more information than that at ISO 100 in RAW. You should be able to get a bit more dynamic range by switching your 'Vivid' profile over to 'Neutral' and editing it as desired in post.Quote:

I just learned from using my camera. If I didn't know what something was, I looked it up. It took me a few years before I felt comfortable with every setting, what they do, and when to use what...
I still cant really take very 'good' pictures in terms of composition. Im currently limited to fairly good technical quality with questionable composition.
About all I do in post, is Auto Tone, Contrast, Color. Sometimes I manually define a black, white, and grey point, apply lens correction from a profile, and unsharp mask. From there I then adjust saturation accordingly, or potentially selectively desaturate the image. Im not really a fan of black and white for the most part... It does help quite a bit at hiding high ISO color noise.
Next time, don't do that. The best thing to do is to shoot in color mode, then use Black and White through post-processingQuote:

There is a thread on XS that gives you link to learn Photoshop, I've not seen them and I cannot guarantee that all of them are for post-processing.
You might find some plug-ins for Photoshop to be easier (such as simply sliders and painter tool) for post-processing. Something I use is the entire Topaz Labs Plug-in Suite, it costs about $200 for the whole Suite Bundle. It will eventually get really expensive, I suggest you to try Lightroom, it is basically a organization tool (like the Adobe Bridge), but it gives you some sliders to do Color Toning and Exposure.

lkiller, when i said i was gonna make all the pictures i already took b&w, i meant through ps cs5 :) ill start doing some research about camera settings & post processing. i figured the user guide might give me the basics but i have a few cameras so i am trying to just find out what all the settings do regardless of camera. i am decent with photoshop but i just wasnt sure of standard things people do for post processing etc. thanks for your help

Thomas is a great photographer that shoots large formats. I love urban shots, and the unique colors in his photographs is what I like the most.
I've always thought that the color effects are from some type of filter lens, since he does large format.
But from seeing an example above, taken by a Lumix LX2, I am assuming that the color effect might be done by post-processing.
What kind of Photoshop plug-ins will able me achieve this kind of colors?

Really looks like a form of HDR to me... Theres all kinds of processing you can to to multi exposure shots to achieve different looks. Most people somehow prefer making them look crazy and unrealistic for whatever reason. I do HDR shots on my phone all the time, and thats just to extend the cameras dynamic range marginally and still make them look realistic. Its just that cell phones generally have poor dynamic range... Maybe if you have a DSLR with good dynamic range and you extend it significantly it looks like that? Theres all kinds of things you can do in post...

And no you cant do anything like that unless you buy large format camera and some very good scanner. Ok, maybe some digital MF would help. Cheapest try would be Pentax 645D.
