...why on earth do i/should i ever have to do that? i am the consumer and i paid quite a few bills for this board, the company should fix these issues; not me. thats ok though, i have been talking to newegg cs; and they have agreed to give me a refund (store credit only, and -15%), i do a lot of business with the egg, so they decided it was best to take care of me.


asrock fatality here i come!

F7 bios fixed the C&Q, but I also had to set the CPU voltage in bios +.075 higher to reach the same voltage in windows as on F6. Doesn't really change anything, just an observation.

There is a bug I've had since I started with the FX6100 though. Whenever I set the frequency above 5 ghz the bios hangs when I try to exit and save changes. It is saving the changes though, and after I restart it boots fine with the new settings. Has anyone else encountered this?

Gigabyte sucks on AM3+, vdroops, crapy bios, crapy support...

I always bought gigabyte (since am2) on intel and amd platforms but for now i have enough.

vdroop has been sorted on rev1.1 a few months ago, we benched UD7 in London, was holding vcore OK while benching :shrug:

I just loved the asus m5a99x bios adjustments it has so much more features, but I just hate that graphic interface. Mine 990fxa-ud3 bios looks exactly like my old 790fxa-ud3p.


Asus also have much more memmory settings and for the first time I was able to run elpida hypers prime stable @ 2000Mhz 7-7-7-21 w/ 1.66v in an AMD setup. If those timmings could also be added the bios would be perfect.

We don't need load line calibration if vcore is solid and same for idle and loaded cenarios. Vrm spread spectrum and optimezed vrm control based on current demanded is also very nice, same for the over current manual adjustments. But I think those options will never be available since it hasn't got a digital vrm. Asus bios also doesn't have a working solution to disable APM, even w/ apm disabled my cpu trhotled down while fully loaded and overclocked.

Thanks for sharing your opinions about UD3. :) I will try to test this board this night and see if I get the same conslusions. I have rev 1.0 btw.

That's exactly my position with my FX8120. Have gone right back to F6c since each new bios version since. v1.0 as well.

I found that memory wasn't stable until F6c and was affecting my crossfire setup. Using the same RAM as i was using with my 890GPA-UD3H i still can't get the same level of speed or timings with the 990FX-UD3 so the bios still has a way to go on that front.

I'm not even sure that the bios has control of the VRM either. When i set 1.435 for VID in the bios it is reported as that via software until i run a stress program where it rises (reported) to 1.50V. I've not measured the voltage with a DMM to see if it's the reporting that's wrong or the voltage is actually rising but something isn't right.

I think the quality and effort put into AMD boards by the manufacturers is reflecting the position the AMD CPUs have in the marketplace. As there will be less boards sold the corresponding amount of effort spent is lower than for Intel setups. We're now a long long way away from the DFI NF4 days (with the multiple board and bios revisions - was hard to keep up) and i fear they are never coming back.

Anyone have tested the new F8a Bios for the UD7?

I have been a long time member of this board but I can't remember the last time I posted this might even be my first post. After reading quite a few posts about these models of Gigabyte boards is the recommendation to avoid this board?

Reason why I ask is one of the computer shops in my area have the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 on for $120 dollars, but if there are stability issues the savings to me doesn't matter. I am also thinking about the ASUS Sabertooth 990fx will be putting an 8150 in one of these boards. Already have an i7 just want an amd machine around as well.

i have a 990FXA-UD7 rev 1.1 it has LLC on 5 levels and they work to eliminate vdroop, you just have to set them to a level other than stock. Vdroop on AMD with GB is being treated like it is on Intel, it goes with AMD spec at stocka nd you have to change a setting to get rid of it.

LLC setting isn't under the voltage menu, its under advanced CPU settings or something.

Anyways LLC does work well on the GB 990FXA-UD7 i have tested, there are just 5 levels of LLC to chose from ;)

My GA-990FXA-UD3 has just blown some VRM and taken out my 8120. It might have been the other way round but based on how hot the VRM were getting i doubt it.

I've managed to see a Crosshair V and a Sabertooth in the flesh and to be frank the power circuitry on the GA-990FXA-UD3 has puny cooling in comparison so i'm not surprised it's gone pop.

Thanks for the info the board went back up in price so it looks like it will be the Sabertooth 990fx. I have more experience with ASUS so probably the better choice for me.

M599X seems the best all around board at this moment.


Just some notes:

Bios F6C

- High voltage raise between idle and load states, 8 cores full loaded gives me around 0,04-0,06 increment.

- CnQ not working, Selected voltage in bios is the the as idle voltage

- Vdimm is pretty accurate, if you set 1,60v you will have 1,58v in MB sensor and 1,62V Real voltage.

F6F

- Huge bios/read voltage offset, You need to set around 1,50v to have around 1,42 - 1,45v

- Accurate CPU voltage, difference between loaded and idle voltage are around 0,02-0,04v

- CnQ working

BEWARE!!

- Vdimm seems like old 790FX-ud5 and some Asus board. HUGE Offset now


It still reading lower than what you set, around 0,025v but real voltage now is much higher. it can vary from 0,04V till 0,08V and if you are using the readed voltage for base, that might sums a total of 0,1V difference.

Old 790FX ud5 had a 0,06V difference

So I've placed 1,66V, readed 1,62V and real voltage was 1,73v OMG

Despite all the bios problem and the weak VRM cooling solution (why they did it pretty instead of efficient if it get's that hot? An 790FXT-UD5P HS would be muche better than that rubish.

But don't get me wrong still a great board, with no major errors or limitations, There is no board in the marked than can match it in performance and value combination.

My UD7 get a issue last week... I have tested the 8120 all day and at night i have mounted it on the case with WC and the mobo dont get in the windows or in BIOS it stays on 75 or 89 on led debug... I hav tested with all options reser bios multiple times, test with 1075t and other rams with keyboard with other keyboards and nothing i will send it to RMA.

Taken from my UD7 manual:
Code 75: Detect and install all IDE devices: HDD, LS120,ZIP,CDROM...
Code 89: 1. Assign IRQs to PCI devices 2. Set up ACPI table at top of the memory

Check cables if you have any IDE devices. Code 89, I dont know what this means. Tested another battery?

GA-990FXA-UD7 BIOS F8j is out.

using f8f bios right now, seems good...btw my ud7 rev1.0 has an enormous problem with vcore...setting 1,600v in bios becomes 1,408v in windows in full...that's a 0.2v gap!! is the only way to fix this to do the vdrop mod, or i can try something else?

I have less RAM than you have so I cannot say how t will work for you. Please post later on and tell how it is going. :)

I agree about that +4GHz should be possible for you. About RAID I have heard that some people have problems using port #0 and #1, so #2 and #3 might be a good choice. I have not had the chance to test that myself.

Got Gigabyte 970A-UD3 and it seems very efficient board, but had one problem.
The board is unable to boot with memory set higher than 1700MHz.
When in Windows, I can run 940+ with Deneb, but booting is impossible. Board says my overclock failed.
Tried all bioses and it's still the same. Anyone experiencing similar thing?

The board came with the initial bios and I haven't tried to downgrade.

No problem to reverse back any time.
I sugest also to upgrade Backup BIOS (will flash existing Main BIOS) with ALT+F12 before boot.

Does anyone know if the 970a-ud3 or 970-d3 boards will support unregistered /unbuffered ECC ram in the bios? I know some of the higher end boards (990fx) will support it, but I am not sure if Gigabyte included that capability in the 970 series.

It came with the F5 bios installed, is this the best option for FX chips?

Also, just from about 1hr settup/testing, EasyTune is NOT impressing me at all... :rolleyes:

I'm probably just used to "Turbo Evo" on the Asus boards, but honestly, EasyTune looks (and acts) about the same as it did on my 1st GBT board (790FX)... :p:
I really haven't had time to mess with the board too much yet.
I'm sure I'll have to get used to it, just seems a little wonky compared to the C5F or the Sabertooth (no offense GBT fans ;)).

Once again, is F5 the best bios for FX chips?

Looking good, 51C is closing in on the max you'll be able to run with stability at ++4ghz. And yes, lowering the RAM timings sound like a good plan :)

Vdrop increases when you need more voltage and overclock more... put 4.3Ghz at 1.45V, run a prime95 blend and see if there is no difference between idle and load voltages.

Has anyone else had issues with core unlocking on the 990FX UD3?

I am a noob when it comes to the AMD side of things and figured core unlocking would be a simple affair but no luck. One thing I did notice is this board has massive vdroop, even with LLC enabled (High, Ultra or Extreme) on bios F6K.

Maybe try a different stable bios?

Do they stop making new bios at all?

Just got UD3. Amazing looking board. Just giving first impessions.

pros
- nice look
- quality parts
- seems stable
- 8+2 phase with 110€. Theres no competition around with that price.
- 300X10 NB took fairly little effort to achieve with PII 1045T.

cons

- no good software to OC in windows
- oldschool bios. Doesnt allow to save profiles
- Overclocking the NB is pain since if board cant handle the rate, it just freezes and only thing you can do is clear cmos.
- vCPU jumps way up on load and theres nothing i can do about it. Bios has no option to adjust load voltage. Theres only vCPU. (rev1)

Not too bad chip but not brilliant either. Now im stable 300x13= 3900 with NB=1.16v; vCPU=1.45v; vNB-CPU= 1.4v. Other voltages left to normal.
Since its a 24/7 on PC, i wanted AMD C1 and Q&Q left on and achieved it with those settings :) . DDR3 is 1.6v 8-8-8-24-1T 1600mhz. Samsung 30nm chips.


BTW. Theres no guide in internet, how to adjust voltages in bios for phenom II OC. All guides are very primitive. Hopefully my voltages help someone to get their stable OC done. :)

You would have been better off with the 8120. Otherwise, I don't know why you would pick a board like this (990FX) for a Phenom II CPU. That is asking for trouble :)
Your chip is good for a low bin 1045T. 3.9 GHz and 3 GHz CPU_NB is good. However your CPU_NB voltage is rather high, and I'm willing to bet the board overvolts a little on top of that.

As far as guides on the internet about adjusting voltages in bios...what do you mean primitive? Most of the time that is overlooked because it is in your motherboard manual! O_O

Even at stock the voltage under cpuz jumps around all over the place from as low as 1.33 to as high as 1.42. The bios sets 1.425 as the VID. Whatever it is called v offset, vdrop is bad on this board. Didn't really look around much but I did not see an LLC setting on the UD3 unlike the Crosshair V.

Easytune allowes only vcore adjustment in windows. At least for UD3. Thats rather useless. I quess its was too much to ask from UD3 to give all voltage adjustments in windows anyway.
By saying the guides are primitive, i meant that no guide said which voltages need to be adjusted and which not. At least i didnt find any. All guides i read were useless to me, since i already know the basic stuff of overclocking. I searched for clues if i have to raise PLL too and for example how much vnb would be needed to hit 3000mhz NB etc...

Anyway. Now i tweaked a bit more. Im at 297x13.5 now. vcore @ 1.5v and indeed NB vid was too high. I did reduce it down to 1.35 and its stable. What made my last OC unstable with low NBvid was that my vCore was on its limit too. So increasing NBvid somehow compensated vCore too and made board stable. It may be wierd, but so it was. :)

that's vdrop sorry for hear that, but I don't have it here when using F6 + 8120, you should stick w/ F5 for thuban or 955...

F6 first impressions:

Nice, now we have higher ram multipliers and they seems to work!!


vcore is a mix between F6C and F6K but in a bad way, it have the worst from both... you Set 1.45V it gives you 1.37v (huge offset as F6K) idle and 1.42v load...(vraise of the F6C)

But now it has the closest to what you actually set in bios and load voltage, great! It seems the best combination so far, if we can't have accurate idle/load voltage, best is to have accurate load voltages.
VDDR- Less overvoltage than F6K (almost 0,1V!), now you set 1.635v and have 1.65V idle and 1.67V Load, but the readed value is only 1.60V so be careful if u use the MB readed Vram for base. There still an 0.7V offset difference.

By saying the guides are primitive, i meant that no guide said which voltages need to be adjusted and which not. At least i didnt find any. All guides i read were useless to me, since i already know the basic stuff of overclocking. I searched for clues if i have to raise PLL too and for example how much vnb would be needed to hit 3000mhz NB etc...

Anyway. Now i tweaked a bit more. Im at 297x13.5 now. vcore @ 1.5v and indeed NB vid was too high. I did reduce it down to 1.35 and its stable. What made my last OC unstable with low NBvid was that my vCore was on its limit too. So increasing NBvid somehow compensated vCore too and made board stable. It may be wierd, but so it was. :)

If you want to try and stabilize CPU voltage a bit (reduce vdroop) try upping CPU PLL. :)

Theres no vdroop on my board. board is overvolting it on load by 0.2v or so. F6 bios.

Is F6 BIOS (for my UD7 motherboard) the last compatible BIOS with my Phenom II 955BE? I will get bluescreen when I flash F7 or F8. I cannot even install Windows without crash

It clear itself after flashing the BIOS. When I go back to F6 again the computer work with no problems

Not every utility clears the CMOS after flashing. Some give you the option, which you have to specify.

Can't make it work on 970A-UD3 bios F4.
Any special time to hit it?
If I try to hold down ALT+F12 before powering up the system it will bring up the boot menu before loading OS.
Nothing happens when holding right after powering up as well...just the boot menu if I hold it long enough. Tapping (not holding) makes no difference.

Edit: Stupid me...it works, but only on first boot right after updating the main bios.

Can someone confirm something to me, the resistor for the mod on the ud7 is it 0402 size? or 0201?

OK, now I've successfully hard modded my ud7 and cpu voltage is working more as it should, even though rises a bit under load, but it's preferable than dropping down and causing severe instability.
For the ones interested the resistor size is 0402.
