How much will the release of Cayman and GF110 impact lower end prices? I'm waiting to pickup a 68xx or a GTX 460.
I doubt the mainstream prices will drop since the high end will be priced much higher than 239$ (6870). I'd wager 6950 will be 300$, 6970 400$, and 580 450$. Of course that depends on how they perform, but I don't see them having an effect to mainstream and low end in any case.
It might occur naturally and without any interaction with the cayman and gf110, I thought quantities were going to be bad because of what the CEO of AMD said. But we are already seeing sales for the 68xx cards and to me this means either quantities of the 68xx are good or the sales of this generation are not so hot. I think its a combination of both because we never saw sales below MSRP of both cards until many many months after with the 5xxx generation. In canada, you can find a 6850 for 169 dollars which is really surprising because at that price, it is a pretty good deal. The size of cayman(an estimate from the PCB shot) indicates to me that they are going to be in entirely different price arena's so they wouldn't interfere anyways.
"The size of cayman" may tempt AMD to sell it expensive, but the "size" is not going to be the final chapter. The competition would decide the pricing. That's why you find those 68xx on sale now, because nVidia has been pushing by a good price-drop.
Next round will have better pricing in both camps, because nVidia has proven to be serious to fight by all means, both by price-drops and countering AMD's new GPU right at release. This will push down the pricing in bot camps, no matter how "big" chip they got or what's the costs of manufacture it, in my opening.
At the end of the day, are the prices Nvidia is selling them at sustainable?Quote:

In short, you are like a Turkey cheering for Christmas...
Don't worry, they will survive. Both has been milking us in last years "peace"-period to live on that for a good while.
We need good competition, with a good fight, otherwise they (both of them) will milk us the moment they get a chance. Competition will prevent overpricing, don't worry they won't go under by selling GPUs at real prices.
Really? Like AMD graphics made a poxy $1m last quarter?
And rumours that even Nvidia are about to have a really lousy quarter because of all their fire-sale discounting.
Ultimately Nvidia are financially more stable and have the cash reserves to ride a short term financial **** storm because of the success of G80/G92 and the professional sector, but that will only help Nvidia for so long, until they have to begin cutting back on R&D.
R&D is the life blood of innovation, without it we get inferior products for our cash.
Some people have been promoting the idea of brand-loyalty to the level of doing charity to these companies. These guys don't do charity for nerds, why should we care about how they make (or don't make) money? they better do R&D if they want to stay in business. If they don't, somebody else will come and fill the gap, for sure.
Anyways, only shareholders and those on the pay-check of these companies should care about these stuff. We, frequent consumers of GPU, need a good competition to get real prices.
Who told you there is no money in GPU-business?.
If one company drops out (because of the lack of R&D) then there is a big opportunity for others. This is how business works, in reality. Just look at the history of GPU-making, many of them has dropped out, but we didn't run out of good GPUs, did we?
Intel (and others too, I guess) are watching these guys closely, and will replace (fill the void/gap), because there is a lot of money to make on GPUs.
These guys better do R&D if they want to stay in business, or others will do it and make money in GPU-business. But i don't think any of them will drop out any time soon, because this a good business and they both are doing a good R&D.
Well for now every intel attempt at GFX has been a failure so i wouldnt look up to them in that regard.
S3 is pretty much dead, matrox too, powervr makes some cell gpus, maybe them.
All in all, a decent at stable nv/ati fight would be best :)
Both nVidia and AMD/ATi had been doing good lately, but nobody knows what happens in the future. Both Intel and AMD are going for IGP, and that can be a game-changer for low-end and OEM marked. That's where these guys makes most of their money.
It remain to be seen what kind of IGP we are going to get, but it will probably affect the OEM and low-end marked, and present a challange for nVidia and AMD in coming years.
Oo re-read what you said .... why would it create a challenge for amd who has the fusion line comming in 2011 ?????
We are talking about dedicated GPUs here.
Upcoming IGPs will present a challenge for both nVidia and AMD's dedicated GPUs that they sell to low-end and OEM marked, we are talking about here.
Sometimes people mean the same thing, but wolf-pack and football-team mentality, tends to create misunderstandings.
I think I understand what snow is referring to,
he is saying that Fusion is not a challenge for AMD, since APU will replace low end in a cpu/gpu solution, which is something Nvidia does not have, (I gather its because they do not have a x86 license).
And so the battle might be between intel (lacking Dx11 among other things) and AMD... if manufactures can give a gpu embedded in the cpu to save costs, well I don't really see Nvidia retaining any market share in that particular cluster
i just love all the love.
Can we keep it to 580 info?
what amd allready showed playing alien vs predator isnt nice enough for you on a small compact device ... come on ...
onboard gpu or on cpu gpu are the same ... because they target low end devices ... but since the gpu is on the die its much simpler in packaging ... anyway .. amd wont have trouble keeping up with all of ati's intelectual property ....
exactly ... and nvidia's lost shares .. would gladly be taken over by amd who could lower prices since they would have more shares ...
Oo ... that picture will get you banned dude ... remove it asap ...
Lol @ the AMD power point slide style performance chart being used for nvidia.
numbers seem to indicate right around a 20% increase over 480
At least it starts from zero ;)
It's also 50% increase over HD 5870, that's quite a jump.
Three hurrahs for competition!
i didnt compare with that for a few reasons
1) its not the real competitor for the 580, the 69xx would be (yet we dont have those numbers so i wont complain)
2) some of those games are really heavy on tessellation so its looking like people are trying to make AMD look bad on purpose, which makes me question some of the settings or games chosen (im this hard on AMD when they do it too)
3) the values are really all over the place while the 480 to 580 comparison is within a VERY CLOSE margin of error, so i feel confident in my assumption that a 580 will be 20% faster than a 480 in almost every case. while vs AMD is a per game basis
None of those games are heavy on tessellation. Only two are, and they are benchmarks, not games.
EVEN IF the games were (which none are), why would that matter?
"Looks like Nvidia is able to handle the vanilla DX11 spec faster than AMD can"
"That isn't fair, those results should be omitted"
its about the goal of the reviewer that is in question, not the hardware. we KNOW AMD would not put those in their slide presentations cause it would look bad. so the question is if they are trying it too.
and LP2 (Lost Planet 2) has tessellation btw, and it was looking like they went very heavy on it (that giant worm dragon thingy got like twice as fat and spiky, looks good, but the regular version looks like utter crap, lol)
I did it for one reason, to show, how much AMD needs to improve from their last generation.
50% is not unheard of, but considering they went a little backwards with 6850/6870, it might not be that easy to achieve.
There are a couple of bechmarks, but there's still a couple of newer games with gains over 70%. That might paint a bright future for NV, if this trend continues.
So what if it soundly beats 5870? I expect no less. I looks around 5970 performance which is great if true. I think 6970 will be very similar perf. Good good maybe this means high end for less than 400$
That slide isn't exactly showing 20% improvement on 480 IMHO. More like 15%. Bringing the card within HD5970 range.
This is why I check Techpowerup for reviews, they have a HUGE games list that they use for reviews, including old, current, and brand new games.
Too bad the gains in Crysis are so minimal.
I was hoping the new single gpus would be able to finally max it out. :(
AMD needs to improve? I'm sorry but the 5870 and the GTX480 are not direct competitors, let alone the GTX 580. Nvidia slotted their GTX 480 above the 5870 but below the 5970 and avoided a direct comparison/price war in the process.
Who is to say even the 69XX will be a direct competitor for the GTX 580, they could just slot in at different price points again.
Reading comprehension fail...

What kind of % improvement over single 5870 does 6850 get in crossfire? Considering it will cost around 350$ it should be where 580 will be priced.
http://vr-zone.com/articles/report-n...ked/10202.html
Following up on previously leaked specifications, Chinese website eNet has filled in some missing information - notably TDP and TMU count. The TDP of GeForce GTX 580 is at 244W, slightly lower than the GeForce GTX 480. The texture fillrate had been viewed by many as one of the bottlenecks for GF100, and eNet reports that GF110 effectively doubles the TMU count to 128 TMUs. Apart from this substantial improvement in TMU, the GF110 is a "full revision" and fixed version of GF100.
The GTX 580 is set to release in one week's time, on November 8th/9th (depending on where you live), but the jury is still out on the extent of availability on release. While strong rumours suggest virtually no availability on launch, eNet insists that AIC partners will have GTX 580s on sale on November 9th. However, the quantity of cards for sale on November 9th is not mentioned.
Anyone want to buy my 480s? I'll sell them to you real cheap in a package deal :D
We might get to see some stuff sooner at PDX LAN (PDXLAN 16.5 Nov 5th - Nov 7th 2010), exactly like last time.
http://www.pdxlan.net/portland/Quote:
We promised you more at this PDXLAN, and now I can reveal almost everything. NVIDIA will be talking about something new that is NDA. We can not confirm what that is.
One interesting thing to make note of in this "debacle" of ours is this: If you look at Fudzilla here, they say "Nvidia has planed to push this card against AMD Cayman based cards" and we know that those are being released anytime, furthermore, we know that the 580 is coming soon via a web-snafu on the Nvidia Website - so putting all this together, one could reason quite simply what NVIDIA might be talking about at PDXLAN 16.5
Hehe yeah! But I have to admit, I'm pissed off that Nvidia couldn't deliver the REAL Fermi at launch.
If Nvidia would have released the 480 with these specs, then Fermi would have practically dominated Cypress and about pulled even with Hemlock.
So never again will I be an early adopter. Instead I will wait for the inevitable respin..
ohh an announcement of an announcement .. who would have known ....
go to the store and buy a GTX 480 then take the GTX 480 home and put it in your computer, then overclock said GTX 480 and install Crysis, set graphics settings to 1920x1080, 16xQ AA and Very High (Enthusiast or Best Visuals), Enjoy.
My GTX 480 runs Crysis totally maxed (AA included) at 1080P any-ware from 40-90FPS. Cayman and the GTX 580 will only get better.
Sarcasm? http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/M...htning/11.html
I haven't come anywhere near maxing Crysis with my GTX 470 SLI and AA... granted, I run at 2560x1600, but look at those charts... ;).
That slide could be very real and the release date also could be real because if they release the GTX 580 before the 6950/6970 come out they have no real single core nemesis. Reviews would write it off as the most powerful single core GPU and in the end of the article mention that cayman is coming and that's it.
If its not a paper launch i would imagine it being a super limited launch which would make the card seem hot since it is sold out.
Still, a 15% performance increase with a 10W TDP decrease at the same node is a good accomplishment. Obviously performance per watt is an area which GTX 480 absolutely sucked so I guess it would be easy to top that. :D
now you see where have nice big 30inch screens is your downfall. Im not joking about them numbers im talking about, Crysis totally maxed on my 480 is very very playable at 1920x1080, but as was previously pointed out 2560x1600 is a totally different ball game.
@Goldentiger, I recently built a system for buddy of mine packing a pair of GTX 470's in SLI and the performance after OCing was off the charts at 1920x1080, but then I tried out a triple monitor surround config running at 5760x1080 performance more than cut in half and due to the smaller Frame buffer ont he 470's i had to turn the AA down to 2x to stay in the 30-50FPS range. any more than 2x would drop frames to around 10FPS so you may be running low on VRAM as well.
this is why i don't think 2560x1600 is a reasonable gaming res. without an SLI of GTX 480's lost of games don't play well. it's great for work use but gaming maybe not yet.
back on topic 128TMU's IF TRUE would be totally sick and launch on the 8-9th would be excellent and a huge surprise but im not putting to much stock in Chinese rumor sites...
The monitor is for both work and play, and once you get used to it, it's very hard to go back. It also serves as my HDTV. Admittedly, it can be difficult to drive all games at that res though. Since most games are console ports they run well though, even with 8xAA.
a decent GPU will drive it on most games I bet but Crysis is still one of those games thats not like the others. I have used the bog monitors before and they are very very nice but I have to say using the 3 23inch monitors at 5760x1080 was something to behold in the way of gaming. just incredible. Im still very jealous of that 30 though:p:
Yup, I've been gaming on the same 30" for at least four years now at 2560x1600 with a 1950xt, 8800gtx as well as the MSI 260 OC thats in it now and it handles things to my satisfaction 2x aa.
Can't always played details maxed but it'll surprise you what a little time adjusting the settings will net in performance without a big hit in quality.
Needless to say it is time for an upgrade again, just waiting for the right time.
Mark me down for two please. I'll be returning my 6870's to Newegg
Kind of unimpressive performance wise. However hopefully the lower power consumption is true and these overclock 10% more than the original.
Why is the vantage performance the most impressive gain? Thats kind unusual since it is close to a 40% gain over the gtx 480 and we are not close to seeing that in games. Hopefully this means drivers can ring out another 10%. Because at those figures, it will be losing to a 5970 most of the time(I don't expect cayman to top the 5970 either).
nice righted ship:)
anyways put me down for two,but i'm not selling my 480's thuo :D
hmmm, I wonder if I should hold onto my 5970 and wait for the 6xx series...unless they go straight to 7 to catch up the numbering with AMD. Does anyone here use 2 480s with Nvidia surround?
Depends on what you want. But I recommending holding off entirely this round because a 5970 should be good for pretty much anything. Unless you can see your 5970 for 500 dollars which might be difficult at this point, I would hold off.
If you have issues with crossfire and cayman and 580 match performance and you can sell your card for 400 still, then it might be worth a go.
Edit.. make that 5 as I'll surely nuke one(or two) benching.
Am waiting for cayman just to compare! Have gotta sell my 480 1st thou!
Zalbard you don't have to wait...
think about cayman XT as a better 6850 CFX...:wasntme:
the 580 is going to get a big surprise...taking a knife to a guns fight...
AMD did not come out to play...;)
yep .. your right .. amd didnt come out to play ;)
jesus i cant wait...this is why i passed on the 480.. i knew this would be coming :)
GTX 580: The way it's meant to be Fermi'd?
the way its meant to be rebranded
Correct, they will come out to make a bussiness. :yepp:
AMD dominates the discrete graphics market
GTX 580 will be a wonderful card, atleast compared to previous gen cards.
Kinda depends on if you're talking desktop or mobile, AMD didn't dominate desktop, overall is close enough to say it doesn't matter.

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/2...atedgfxmkt.png
Hopefully the gtx 580 won't crap the bed this time because of the extra TMU when it comes to high resolution, high AA settings because it should of had the advantage last go simply because of the extra memory, but as we saw that was not the case.
Who knows, just imagine if both AMD and Nvidia actually launched and tried to push volume 40nm parts at the same time.
You have to wonder what kind of result Nvidia would have if they were not so dx11 product constrained for such a long period of time, afterall it delayed the entire lineup. When you consider marketshare isn't decided by highend product but more or less products under $200 and how long it took Nvida to market with their complete dx11 lineup for mainstream they're doing surprisingly well.
Yeah, maybe, playing what if game is rather hindsight 20-20, though i must say it's rather unfair comparing a situation in which a party has no control whatsoever regarding the event that took place (TSMC 40 nm supply constraint) vs a situation in which a party has only itself to blame regarding its own failure in delivering new products on time as it's supposed to be, they basically constrained themselves. I think we should leave it at that. :)
So, more leaks please !!!
No, actually i agree with you, R600 debacle sucked, so did Agena. They made their own bed with those, so i didn't insinuating that AMD's all angels. ;)
Yep i hope both IHVs overachieve this time compared to last time, nVidia on execution, AMD on architectural improvement.
