I don't use onboard audio and it is disabled in the bios so i don't know why windows is still reocnizing it
question 2, and sheash LordEC911 your like my forum encylopedia.
Whats with this? So which BIOS is better to use then since there are new ones out since the modded ones I'm right confused. Also which 3870 is the best to go with? I'm not looking at spending much here keep in mind but I dont want a crappy card, Saphire the way to go or what? How much performance difference will I really see over my x1950xt is it even worth the upgrade right now?
You guys should check the HIS bios as well, hardwarecanucks.com got to 2748 with it: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...preview-6.html
Now volt mod the core and mem and show us what 1ghz/2900mhz card does. Close to 8800Ultra?
It's the ATI HD audio device on HD 3870, not motherboard! You could download it on internet or just browse to your driver disk and install the HD audio driver and there will be "ATI Function Driver for High Definition Audio - ATI AA01" shown on your device manager......sigh!
I just got my HIS 3870, I have the 862MHz core limit.
Which BIOS should I flash to?
Is the "HD3870_PLLVCO_v010.071" one fine?
The file in that zip is called "S3B33904.103". If I re-name it 3870.bin will that work fine?
Also how do I dump/make a copy of the BIOS I'm using now?
Also, what EXACTLY do I have to do and type when I'm in DOS? What files do I put on my non-booting floppy?
Just whatever is it in the "Atiflash349" zip file?
Thanks
Is there a flasher for Vista that works well?
I used the winflash tool they have at Techpowerup and it worked fine on Vista.
Is anyone using/ OCed a Visiontek 3870 I looked on their website and newegg and cant see what speed it runs at, guessing the same as the rest I'm not sure?
Well I did rename it and I flashed in DOS with ATIFlash. The flash went well.
Now I can get 891MHz on the core with no artifacts in ATI Tool. At 904MHz I get artifacting in ATI Tool.
Anything in between these 13.5 increments doesn't really work right?
I've gotten upto 1260 on my RAM without artifacts.
What's a normal 3DMark06 score for a 3870 with an nf4 / opteron s393 system?
My highest thus far is 7653 in 06.
I didn't format with the new card, just uninstalled the old drivers and software from my X850XT.
I'll probably format sometime soon to see if it makes any difference.
my visiontek one is scheduled for delivery today,if it proves to be able to run stable at the 875/1250 speeds than I'll flash with that bios, make a nice gaming upgade from the x1900
I'm using the "HD3870_PLLVCO_v010.071" BIOS.
I formatted last night and now I'm up to 7.7K in '06 and 14063 on '05.
My 148 Opty is at 2.9GHz..
I've got two Powercolor HD 3870s incoming. I'll have results by the middle of next week.
Then yes, that should be about right mate. You are running a single-core after all. How much RAM you got? what speed?
Although in saying that...for the OC you've got ont he 3870 it does seem somewhat low..I would expect your 06 score to increase maybe ~1-2k with a dual core, and similarly again for a quad...
Btw this is some insane stuff, are these 3870's actually outperforming OC'd 8800GTs, 8800GTXes etc? I've been too lazy to read the thread/check ORB. Sorry guys ^^". I'm talking DX10 performance in games here eg Hellgate.
Getting over 10k with 8800GT stock on GF's machine (pretty std) its just a meagre 2.7Ghz E4300 with 2gb RAM on Vista Home Premium 32-bit with a P5N-E SLI mobo. 300x9. Ram is at 3-3-3-8, G.Skill BHZ D9-GMH stuff @ 2.1v.
I am returning my 8800GT to Best Buy on Monday. It was a total of $279 after taxes, and I was able to get a MSI 3870 earlier today for $215 shipped from clubit. :) The 8800GT is a great card and I had a hell of an overclocker hitting 780 on the GPU with stock voltage, but I felt the image quality in Crysis was laking a bit and more importantly I could use an extra $65 for the holidays.
I will be watercooling my 3870, so look for some more watercooled results next week.
is the GT that bad? I am considering switching to an 8800GT just because this 3870 really can't cut it on like 32/32 sprites in TF2 with everything maxed (1650x1050 8xaa 16xaf shadows everything high). without hardware volt mods, I can only achieve 877core and 2600 mem. I want a card that won't drop under 60fps under extreme load.
But the image quality is superb, it is the absolute best.
How is the image quality with CS S and TF2? is there a serious difference between the two cards?
My system is:
AMD Opteron 148 @ 11 x 264 - 2.904GHz
DFI NF4 LP Ultra-D
2 x 1GB Crucial Rendition RAM @ 207MHz
HIS HD 3870 512MB @ 891/1305
Just ordered my 3870. Looking forward to the gain in speed and image quality from the 7 series. I'll let you guys know if the latest batch of sapphires are shipping with the new bios.
It wasn't that bad, but I seem to be getting strange shimmering issues similar to the 7900 series of cards on several games. The overclock was not the culprit either, but I am at a max resolution of 1366x768, so the 3870 + $62 Cash back sounds good to me right now.
Got my 3870CF aka 3dmark queen today. Games run like crap :( Chillin at 860/1250 for now...
Can I flash both cards at once wth ATIflash?
Can I control the fan speed on both cards some how? Riva only controls the first card :( I'm loading 91c.
You have the cards set in Crossfire in CCC and do you have a bridge on the cards?
Yes I have both bridges on the cards. It certainly is working. I score 64k 03 at 860/1251 in Vista...
ok, well you've got me stumped then. :D
I'm only using one bridge. My system seemed to act funny when using two bridges.
What do you mean "funny"?
Mine refuses to post after a reboot from anything but in the BIOS. I have to turn the PSU off then back on in order to boot again. This in turn causes my OC to "fail" according to ASUS. Maybe it's just a maximus issue.
BIOSes flashed on the cards to the 860/1200 ones from IAXtech. OC results later!
Hmm... Look at zolkorns shot here:
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/8...70cf904pw1.png
My GPUZ says "disabled" for crossfire, even after disabling and re enabling it via CCC.
Maybe my drivers are broken? I blackscreened when installing them and it never went away (typical ATI...). I waited a few minutes and rebooted. Everything was installed and ran fine when I rebooted so I figured I was fine.
I would uninstall the drivers then reinstall them. Something ain't right. I'm using two 3870s with one bridge on a Maximus Formula and my GPUZ looks like Zolkorn's.

I tried this BIOS for the 3850 on my 3850...and before it, I could do 730/2030
I can still only do around that.... =(
I noticed though on that link they have a field in the bios editors called VDDC3
is that the voltage for the core any chance? if so couldnt modifying that to the 3870 of 000b make the 3850's core voltage higher?
Also any other suggestions of a BIOS to try for my card that could get its core higher?
progress!
Got fan control to work in rivatuner, major PITA though. Need to disable CF, set fan speed, enable CF, OC, run benchmark.
Also, these things are NOT temp limited. I load 88c in games and peak 92c during 3dmark with the default fan speed running 860 core. I tried 100% fan speed which dropped idle to 36c. Set clocks to 905 and it crashed with some vertex lock error before GT4. Set clocks down a notch to 890 and it locked during GT1. Time to order some VRs... I need to figure out a better way to cool them to.
On top of all that, reseating with ceramique didn't help my GPU temps at all :( And ATI made the ram and pwm sinks retarded so that they can not be remounted with real TIM.
CF in games is a mixed bag.
Hellgate doesn't use CF at all. If I play windowed mode and watch CCC, the second card has 0% load.
CSS works great and I get a 42% performance increase!
UT3 also works great. 1920*1200 max settings 80-90 fps average (capped @ 90) lowest I see after all the textures have loaded is mid 70s in large fights.
Crysis doesn't seem to work at all
ET quake wars works! Fixed it ftw.
860/1251 CCC set is game stable so far it seems. 875 (864 real) core set in CCC runs 3dmark but scores go down if anything. I tried quake wars @ 1281 ram and I GPU recovered within <5 minutes. Set down to 875/1251 and it GPU recovered after ~10 minutes. Is the 860/1200 BIOS off IAX tech not a fixed version for the 862 core limt or am I hitting a volt/heat ceiling?
How do you oc both cards? I guess if you clock with atitool/rivaturner you only oc the master card?
I've just been using CCC. You can click the drop down box and pick the second card. Set the same clocks for that. I think riva sets both at once.
860/1251 VPU recovered in UT3 :( I was able to play quake wars for 45 minutes problem free before I got bored and quit though. After that I had checker boards in any game at any clocks until I rebooted. *sigh*
Yep connect a one bridge it can enable Crossfire :) my new setup on one bridge >> Link
not yet Rivatuner don't both at once in OC, you can try for looked is card 2nd
it how coreclock run by open Rivatuner graph on 2nd card and run some 3D
you will see real clock jump from 2D to 3D clock ;)
What about the 864mhz wall in crossfire? Can you pass 864mhz on the 2nd card in CCC with the modded bios?
yep you can pass 864MHz in crossfire with bios moded because bios mod it has
core/mem 875/1250MHz after you flashed your card will boot to 875/1250MHz instant :)
I think I need some Vr's and a 900/950/1000 bios :D
I tested using 3dmark06, playing cod4, nfs carbon, cs s, tf2 etc.
from my experience, ATI tool is the worst thing to test anything.
Playing nfs carbon at highest settings is the best way to test stability and artifacting because:
- The game forces your GPU at 99% even at main menu, and at all times during the game.
- Because of that, your card is constantly stressed not just visually, but by inputs as well
- Artifacting is real time and is easily noticable during memory access.
- The game is super sensitive and crashes even on default system clocks and nothing running in the background so if you can achieve 4 races without crashing, you're stable! lol
How does this 864mhz wall work? Is it insta lock or is it just not stable after a while? I can run 864 for 3d03 but my scores actually seem to be lower and it crashes quickly in games.
Also, have you found a way to put both fans @ 100% without disabling CF and doing it with rivatuner, then re-enabling CF?
What OS on you used XP or Vista ? if vista i don't way too it have only disable
CF and enable again, if on XP you can select 2nd card in rivatuner and set 100%
without disable CF :)
The Revival (HD3850) kicks quite hard too ;)
Today I desided to play around little bit with one of these HIS HD3850 cards I had on my desk.
I bolted my old trusty Thermalright SI-128 heatsink on the GPU and did the VGPU mod.
HD3850 cards are easier to mod because there is no separate cirquit for VDDCI and the voltage is synchronized with VGPU, just like it should be.
The highest frequency I could reach was 972MHz for the GPU and ~1000MHz for the memory.
VGPU/VDDCI voltage was 1.54V during the tests.
DRAM voltage was untampered like the frequency shows.
With these clocks 3DMark06 scored 14224 points.

HD3850 certainly isn´t the fastest card around but it damn sure has superior "Boom" (;)) per buck ratio :D
HIS HD3850 is being sold for 149€ (incl 22% tax) here in Finland.
Yes, I did some ROM burning before the tests ;)
Soon...
While I agree that a 300MHz OC on the core is AWESOME, we have to concede that fact of a Kentsfield CPU, 1600MHz ram and (judging from his wallpaper) an X38 chipset (PCI-e 2.0) helped the score a great deal.
Not downplaying the accomplishment, just adding perspective...
To be honest, my next two upgrades will be a DX38BT and some Mushkin HP3-10666. Then I'll have something to plug my 2 3870s into!
Cheers!
Greetings! I have a HD 3870 from Gigabyte (mod. GV-RX387512H-B). I was wondering if anyone here could answer the following questions:
- On the screenshots posted here, I can see Texture/Pixel fillrates of 14+ GPixel/s. GPU-Z only shows 4.8 GPixel/s in my case. Is this because: it's only one card or because I'm running it on a PCI-E 1.0 Board? Bandwith difference is very minimal (people here have ~80, I got 72 GB/s), so I don't really understand...
- I was running a Crossfire system before (2x HIS X1950 Pro 512Mb) and I now would like to get a 2nd HD 38xx. Would you recommend to take a 3850 for the 2nd card? Or would this slow down the 3870 wich is higher clocked?
Thanks already!
When it comes to performance: I expected much less from this card, so I'm quite happy. I always used winclk to oc my x1950's, but this tool doesn't work with the 3870. So I used Overdrive, but the highest stable settings were 830/1306, wich gave me 11737 3DM06 points with the system below.
Thanks for any suggestions.

BIOS editing utility please! With voltage control for both idle and load :D
Man, I got 2 last friday. Spent the weekend playing around with crossfire and all I can say is I'm dissapointed. Single card works great, just like my previous 8800GT but in CF no game works!?!?! I've tried COD4, Company of Heroes, UT3, Crysis, Supreme Commander and WIC. I've tried 7.11 and Crysis hotfix drivers. It crashes 99% of the times. At least I got 18456 in 3DMark06 with no OC. All I can say is it sucks big time!!!
By the specs, 750 is more than enough. And all the rails are well distributed. It doesn't actually crash but is unable to load games. Funny thing I've emailed M$ for a solution. They emailed me back with a new hotfix for Vista 64. I could load Crysis before but now it's impossible!!!
Oh, Vista... well that just says it all ;)
Same with XP. I'll get a 1200W tomorrow. If it doesn't work I'll just return it. Will post results later. Thanks!!
i'm running both vista and xp and i can say that 3870 CF dont have any problem with any games u mentioned above..
just i have to admit the gameplay in xp is way smoother than in vista..
Finally got approved to post here...
Anyway just wanna say thanks for the updated bios.
Managed to do this with a GeCube reference 3870:
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/9...8911260en4.jpg
Although it seems that the new powercolour 3870 with 0.8ns rams and non reference hsf doesnt need a flash to get it to hit over the 862 wall:
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1...8911251ul2.jpg
But all still suffer from lack of higher volts so I still can hit 900+ core stable. :o

vGPU and OCP mods tomorrow (and VDDCI if necessary) and I'm ready to go :)
My new Sapphire 3870 from MoboPro needed a flash to clear 862.
Edit:
Sampsa, when I used the stock thermal tape and Swiftech ramsinks on my 2900, it was actually higher temperatures on the memory than with absolutely nothing on them. That thermal "tape" seems pretty bad for anything other than occupying space to reach heatsinks. You noticed the same, or does it work decently for you?
my PowerColor HD3870 is doing ~904/1380 stable stockcooled and without any mod.
Without this new bios it was stoppping at 862 on core...
Man my cards must suck :( I cant break 875 for 3dmark.

Hmm maybe I'll try running the mems naked.
Without the thermal tape, no contact will be made I believe. From what I can tell, the heatsinks have nubs that stick out to touch the pcb where the holes are. If you grind them down, it should work with regular thermal paste. For now I need to get my computer stable. I VPU recover even at 810mhz core in games
I did that memory temperature testing with my 2900, which hated memory overclocking anyways. All I was looking for was which one actually ran cooler - loaded up using ATiTool, or some games, and tested the temperature with an IR thermometer. (That IR toy is worth its weight in gold.)
As for now, the memory chips between mosfets and core have Enzotech ramsinks with the Enzotech sticky pad, and memory chips off to the side have nothing. I can test the temperatures on that, but obviously the ones between mosfets and cores have the power running through the PCB below.
Anyways. Using an MCW60, third component of the loop (follows a Conroe and a P35), I get 40C pretty much continuously with the below settings. 925/1225 was fine by OpenGL_FUR, but UT3 died in just a couple of minutes. 920/1225 seems good so far though, will do more testing soon.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...n/918x1224.jpg
Ut3 loads cards HARD. I was peaking 3c higher than in cod4 while playing UT3. Is your card vmodded? 918 core is fast!
DiRT creates more load than UT3 for me.. even in the menu.
True, that game did turn my 8800 into a toaster. I'll have to give it a whirl tomorrow.
crossfire is still being a...
Cod4 sees some great gains but I still can't play @ 1920*1200 with AA on or my fps will hit 30s at times. Even without AA, some levels/spots (especially with rain) will drop me into the 40s.
UT3 won't even load both cards anymore, and when it does/did, there doesn't seem to be a performance gain
Hellgate is still hopeless
I have both the latest hotfix and the just got the older "fix" for games only using 1 card. Some fix. Vista x64 FTL. Is CF easier to get to work in XP?
Ok, replaced my PSU. Tried a 1200W and same problems. Good, I didn't want to spend another $350, will return tomorrow. 750W is back and COD4, UT3, COH runs perfectly. Still no Crysis, Supreme Commander and WIC in CF. Vista 64 still picky, no big news here. Just like afireinside, I've installed every hotfix, tried all drivers and still no good. But Maximus is way better than my previous P5K-E WiFi. I overclocked with less voltage and it runs cooler. My cards too. I've reapplied AS5 in both. Mobo runs @ 30C. Cards @ 36C idle and 55C loaded with fans @ 50% sotck cooling. It can't get better than that.
Let see some DiRT and COD4 screen shots. DiRT is one of the few games that stress a video card.
CF gave me a "brutal" boost in Bioshock: 160 fps in DX9, all settings high on 1280x1024. No improvement at all (far from it!) in COD4, Crysis, Race 07. Using driver v. XP32-64_8-43-1-1-071113a-055588E (Crysis "Hotfix"). Hope there'll be some new drivers soon!
Guys, from what i could gather the Crysis Hotfix does NOT fix the CF bugs, instead, the latest official driver does, BUT, that same driver doesn't have the Crysis Hotfix, so you have to choose between either playing Crysis optimised, or playing all the other games on CF without bugs!
Did some testing today with Vapochill LS evaporator mounted on AMD Non-Qualification Radeon HD 3870 reference board (see pics above). Unfortunately this RV670 is not very good overclocker and it can only do 830 MHz stock and 860 MHz with 100% fan-speed.
Tested with 3DMark05:
1,5v 1000 MHz ok
1,53v 1012 MHz ok
1,55v 1026 MHz ok
1,57v 1039 MHz ok
1,595v 1053 MHz crashed to GT3
1,6v crashes and problems
Notes:
Catalyst and Rivatuner reported that GPU temperature was 19 Celsius during tests and it didn't change even under load so it was probably lowest value RV670's thermal sensor can read. I also measured the temperature of PWM components under load with infrared thermal meter:
1,5v ~49 Celsius
1,6v ~70 Celsius
http://plaza.fi/s/f/editor/images/rv670_1026mhz.png
Looks like I only had screenshot @ 1026 MHz saved. Memory is not maxed out yet.. just tested GPU this time.
About Crysis Hotfix and stuff: Can't this be combined? It worked before, for two x1950pro's in CF, I installed both the latest driver & the hotfix - and voilà.
Sampsa, have you done the Over Current Protection mod, Shamino suggested it rears it's ugly head in the 1.6v territory.
