Erm, also replying to camouflage:
Most ASUS volt and droop mods are applied to CAPACITORS.
The graphite works as a resistor that increases the discharge current of the energy stored in the capacitor beneath.

Thanks Sparx! I get it tomorrow
I replaced my bum P5E3 Deluxe (would not post with memory speed above 1333) for the Maximus Extreme that just went on sale here in the US, and so far I am very pleased. Clock for clock, the throughput and latencies are a bit better even than my beloved P5K Deluxe (not by huge amounts, but an incremental improvement).
Here's 8x450, DDR 1800 C7 on the P5K3 Deluxe:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...DDR31800C7.jpg
Exact same cpu, memory, and settings on the Maximus Extreme (notice higher memory read speed, lower latencies, faster Super Pi run):
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...0x8Maximus.jpg
And for fun, here's 500fsb (haven't tested stability beyond prime 1) (max stable fsb on the P5K3 as 480):
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...500Maximus.jpg
My Corsair DDR3 1800 wouldn't load Windows at DDR 2000 without drawing more voltage that I was prepared to give these sticks (representing as they do a substantial part of my retirement savings :D ), but they did scale nicely to 1960 with no extra voltage over spec at all (just much looser timings):
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...960Maximus.jpg
Final note on this board: after an hour or so of quick testing, I've also noticed the vdrop/vdroop is much better than on the P5E3 Deluxe. Specifically, unlike on the P5E, Load Line Callibration really reduces vdrop on the Maximus Extreme, almost as well as the cpu voltage damper on the P5K Deluxe.
Maximus takes more NB and VTT voltage to achieve the same overclocks as the P5K however.
Aivas47a: does the pencil Vdroop mod work on the Maximus Extreme board?
Great camouflage -- thanks! I'm waiting for FedEx and getting my tape cut!
I made an attempt to remove the massive heat sinks from the board to remove the factory paste and replace it with AS5. (on my P5E)
It was simple to remove the screws and back plate from the NB HS but when I got to those pesky little plastic hold down pins I balked due to the massive amount of traces surrounding the holes of the back of the board.
Normally in past removals I used long nose pliers, but in this case there is NO margin of clearance to the traces.
I really hate to leave the factory TIM in place but sure would hate to ruin the board.
Any easier way to extract these push pin of plastic?
sparx
Haven't done the mod yet and now I'm visiting family for a couple of days. (I love them and all, but man I'm really itching to get back to my new mobo -- only had a couple of hours to tweak before I had to leave. What a dweeb I am! :D ). Anyway, I'll try the mod as soon as I get home and report back.
I am having a small problem.
I have a Cooler Master 690 and it has no standard case speaker two pin connection that is typical and connects to the system panel connectors.
It has a AC 97 and HD Audio cables. Does one of these plug into the pins AAFP1 on the back of the motherboard sound card? This must somehow be the reason I have no case speaker cable- two pin cable.
I cannot find anything in the ASUS manual about this aafp1 connector on the P5E sound card.

I got it built with an E6850, G.Skill PC2-8000 2 x 2G (Thanks Stargazer!), EVGA 8800GT SC, Hitachi 1TB, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Running Memtest 86+ v 1.70 though it doesn't recognize the chipset. Fastest RAM throughput I've seen. :) I guess I need to make a floppy from the ASUS CD to install AHCI driver? NO Vdroop mod yet -- no tape :|
How are the Voltage settings on the Extreme? Im getting one soon, to be replacing my as above said, BUM P5E3 Deluxe :)
Hi everybody... I have one wierd problem when upgrading bios for P5E to 0401 or 0402.
Bios flashing procedure does everything "by the book" without any errors and boots to system spec and stops on press F1 or F2
(like always after flashing with new bios), to setup default settings or manualy setup settings. I can enter bios, customize my settings and save them.
When i reboot monitor stays black with fans running and no post from board.
All older bioses causes no problems at all (from 0303 and below). All settings are default non-OC.
Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

Oh one more question, what is default vcore for Q6600 G0 (1,300v or 1,325v)
P.S.: I'l try booting with only one memory stick. (when i come home from work)
would this ram http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=8&subcat=813
work well with maximus extreme? pairing it with q6600 to overclock to 3.4 hopefully
NO it does not. Maximus Extreme is DDR3 and that is DDR2. Just like I stated in the other thread... The Maximus Extreme only works with DDR3 and the Maximus Formula only works with DDR2.

How are you guys measuring Vdroop? In BIOS or with a Utility?
I want to do a before and after check so I know I have it right.

Using asus probe is the easiest way.
:D Yep - btw nice 3D run there......... - I'm just about to get 585 stable:

Just got the board up and running wondered if this 42C board temp is a concern.
I am at 27C only for the cpu but I only have it running 340x9.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...rx21/temps.jpg
I find the BIOS much more "robust" than the PW5 DH.
Sparx
I wouldn't worry too much about it... but it does seem strange.. I haven't seen over 30C yet.. Anyone know where exactly the sensor is located?
Makes no sense. I am running (375x9) using 1.41 vcore and 2.1 Vdimm.
The cpu is at about 31F.
No sides on the case lot of air moving too, cool in the house.
I have no idea if it is stable as yet, have not had time to install any 3d Marks or Ortho yet.
Fried my new Corsiar usb stick, brand new, don't know WTF I did there was to use it for file transfers.
Also I am running 2t and 5/8 divider, just to BOOT at 3.375.
My P5W DH runs 3.6 1:1 and 1T and is solid.
Maybe this is not to be my new rig? :upset:
Own a p5e vanilla and installed aisuite under windows xp.
When looking at the plain cpu temp it reads 24c, but the cores are around 38 (core temp or TAT).
Which values are correct??
I have an e4500, with stock voltage i can't have 3.00ghz, stable...is the board or the cpu? 3.40ghz only with 1.5v, way too high for me and still not stable...
Now somewhat stable 333x9 v 1.3840 idle, 1.3680- 1.3600 full load, with 1.40625bios, way too much volt drop, soon when i'll have the time gonna do the volt drop mod...

Got my MB temp issue solved. Reason it is high is that the power supply is mounted at the base of the case and the probe has to be near the bottom of the board. I put a fan aimed at the base of the board and got the temps down to 28c for MB.
I have found my RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231128 will not run 1000. I have it at 2.25 volts so it is not up to spec. It is D9 chips too!
What is good RAM?

hmm, think my p5e is a doa.
Tried to different sets of corsair 1024x2 pairs, but both get errors during memtest (allmost inmidiately). Also swapped my q6600 with my old e6400 with no luck.
Seems it's broken somehow.
Will send this baby back, not sure to get another one or get a p5k.
Any advice?
Bios used: 0107 and last one 0402.
Seemed to be getting worse by the hour.
Could do 3,5 prime95 with 4 cores without an error with some settings.
Now as discriped above I can't run memtest for 1 minute with any setting (default, overclocked).
So my P5E is going to be here Wednesday. Is the 0402 BIOS and VDroop pencil mod the best/stable setup to date?
Well here's update to my problems. Booting with one memory stick didn't solve anything.
Have even tried with new memory stick and different brand.
I tried to go back to 0303 bios without luck. Error message is: The bios is older then...
So i tried with AFUDOS v2.10 utillity and floppy disc (Win98 boot disc). Here i get this error message: Main bios checksum error.
So it does not let me to flash it to older 0303 version.
But i got 0402 bios to work. It wont work with all settings at default. All i have to do is just set Overclocking to manual.
But it wont let mi to overclock my memory higher then 428MHz.
On P5B-Deluxe i could go as high as 560MHz with same memory.
Is there any other way to flash bios back to 0303?
Thank you!
I got my board with 0203 bios. Later was updated to 0303 bios. With this bios everything worked ok.
Next update was 0401 bios. After flashing, first boot was ok, but when i restarted computer it wont boot anymore. Good thing with that bios was that i could flash back to 0303.
At last i updated to 0402. Same as 0401, first boot ok after restart not booting anymore. Well problem now is i can't flash back to 0303 or 0203, it just wont let me.
So i tried with AFUDOS (i used an old version v2.10 and 2.07. Latest v2.29 wont let me flash, says: Your bios is older than...)
With older version it starts ok (verifying files), but before flashing i get this error: Main bios checksum error.
To make my board work after flashing with 0402 bios i have to manualy (F1) change settings in bios and save.
With option F2 (default settings) after rebooting computer it wont boot anymore.
The only thing that i have to change in bios to make board work is to set in Ai Tweaker -> Ai Overclock Tuner from Auto to Manual.
Then i can boot and reebot without any problems. Bad thing is that i can overclock my ram only to 428MHz.
I'm at work now, when i get home i'll try more.
Hmm, problems seem related:
When I get sometimes a boot block (or something error) and I choose f2 (boot with default settings and continue) and run memtest86, I get no errors whatsoever. But when I reboot again (hangs most of the times) the problem with the errors is back. Will try your trick when I get home from work.
All my flashig is done with EZFLASH or AFUDOS.
I'll try even older version of AFUDOS.
Just shipped my p5e back to the onlineshop.
can't wait to get a new one.

2.06 V , ballistix 667, asus p5e , not stable 100% thou :D
Hello,
I am trying to choose between the maximus formula and the p5e to go with a q6600. I will pair them with 2 3870s in crossfire.
And for memory I am thinking about crucial ballistix pc2-8500.
Does the maximus formula also have that 3rd generation 8-phase power for the cpu? because that latest gen thing only shows up on the P5e's page on asus.com.
Which x38 board would you guys recommend?
Any other suggestions for memory?
Thank you
ok guys need some help here , sometimes the mobo hangs on post and i need to press reset to get it going. its not happening very often but sometimes it does. the PSU is an enermax 620 liberty , with a quad @ 3600 , memory stable at 1066 and a bit higher than default voltages at NB+SB+PLL , vga is a X550...any ideas what is causing this?
How do your voltages look:
3.3?
5.0 ?
12.0?
I don't know how anyone can run with less than a 750Watt power supply these days.
a friend of mine runs the same setup with an enermax 450W , 12V looks 11.89(using pc probe) now the others are fine
Which audio driver is the best? I'm using the driver on the CD. First of all I can't use the Front Panel Audio and the jack on the Soundmax soundcard at the same time. The second annoying thing is that I can hear the mouse movements! Shall I use a different USB probably?
BIOS 0107
New board has arrived (P5E) and i'm running stability tests now.
Bios is 0107 and was wondering which biosses everyone is using.
Is it worth upgrading?
Using 0401 --flashed from AZ Flash.
Had problems with my RAM but I think it was the RAM itself. New RAM is on the way.
I just got an E6850 and the board is acting weird... won't post over 485 but if I move up slowly in bios with each reboot I can orthos at 495fsb but then it crashes trying to restart.... Anyone else have this?? Didn't happen on E6600...using bios 0401
:D Finally broke 11GB/s read on P5E:

Wow - I just got this board hooked up and OC'd tonight. Amazing freaking board! This thing demolishes my P5W DH in terms of memory and overall stability. Running my E6600 @ 9*378 (3.4GHz) with my RAM at 3:4. Good golly this thing is snappy. And I just added a 3rd Raptor to my RAID0 array.
I'm so happy with this board and memory. Now I just need my E8500 and I'll be set!
Thanks all for the valuable info in this thread.
At 1st hello to all because it's my 1st post here :)
I have P5E for maybe 5 days and board is really nice except bios.
I'm not sure if it's issue with quads but I can't pass stable 458MHz FSB and can't boot over ~480MHz while the same cpu ( Xeon X3210) can be stable on about 490MHz FSB on other boards ( much cheaper boards like Foxconn P35A ) and benchable up to 505MHz.
I see that some people are making 550MHz+ FSB but on duo cores.
Other thingies:
- vmem is bumping by 0,3V and overall my D9GKX are error free on about 20MHz less than on other boards ( so its about 600MHz 2,4V now )
- pencil vdrop is working good but still 0,02V ( better than 0,08V without mod :p: )
- most stable bios for me is 0402 ( only on this one strap to 333 and 400 is working on other biosses only one of them )
- I couldn't downgrade bios - I had ID errors , checksum errors, too old bios and other bugs ... finally I restarted pc while flashing latest bios and I made bios recovery what is working perfect
- on over 460MHz FSB I can pass about 1,5h in Prime95 then I have only black screen without errors or something else
- after all night of prime95 I had weird temps in bios and asus soft, 100*C on cpu ( while all cores had max 70*C ) and -114*C in case ... i wish
Finally all looks stable after night of prime on 3,66GHz X3210 1,56V, 458MHz FSB , 550MHz 2,1V mem ... and I'm waiting for new bios ...
Well i manage to fix my P5E. This is how i done it:
1. Copy 0402 bios to your USB stick and any bios you want to use on your P5E and rename it to P5E.ROM
2. Boot your computer and go to EZFlash
3. Start flashing with 0402
4. When flashing gets to like 90% switch off your psu
5. Now you have bad bios and motherboard will search for new one to flash.
Here you need the P5E.rom file Motherboard will automaticly recognize file
and start flashing bios
6. Wait until it's all done
7. Reboot and the board should work with bios of your choice
I hope it will work for anybody, it did work for me.
The day after the board was fixed, i have return it to the store and get my self Asus Maximus Formula SE...
I must say its much beter board and better looking.
^^^ I have done the same. is the only way to downgrade to any previous BIOS than 0402.
 Why all U guys have probs with back-flashing? I flashed dozends of time back, from 0303 to 0107, from 0402 to 0303 and so on.
All I have done is to save the BIOS files on a CDROM and flashed it back in BIOS with EZflash - 100% working, never had a problem.
Only ASUSUPDATE in WINDWS doesn't allow U to flash backwards......;)
I am still having RAM problems, but then again maybe not.
My first set of RAM was G.skill 8500. I have a q6600 on my P5e.
I downloaded Memorytest86 version 3.4 and got a ton of RAM errors with this set up 310 x 9.
So now I have Corsair Detonators 2 gigs of 8500 same errors with memtest86 3.4
So for the heck of it I put memtest v 3.4 in my current P5w Dh, which has been a rock for over one year. SAME MEMORY ERRORS - entirely different rig and RAM!
Finally I went back and tried Memorytest86 version 3.2 I ran the test on the new rig with COrsair ram and got NO ERRORS????????????
I am wondering if version 3.4 is buggy? Does anyone run Memtest86 version 3.4?
TIA
sparx

Is there a pre-vDroop mod fsb limit that anyone has hit?
Yes, ASUSUpdate allows you to flash backwards, if you set it in options :p:
But when flashed to 0402, neither ASUSUpdate or EZ Flash will let me flash, they said not compatible EEPROM. So the only option was to corrupt the BIOS and use Crashfree BIOS and P5E.ROM contained in the driver CD to restore it
Yeah, I don´t really know what´s happening here. Maybe is my mobo revision or something like that. Anyway, 0107 is the best BIOS for me, high clocks, way better stability and working C1E
Yup, this is with lowered multi....cpu's ability isn't being stressed at all... any ideas?
I've got the same problem with my E6850 -- BIOS 0107 -- but, I have not yet done the VDroop Mod. Max FSB so far is only 370 with E6850 on 9x multipier. I'll try lowering to 8x
Can I flash back from 0401 to 0107?
Nobody told me 0107 was good, until now anyway!
sparx
Yes you can and yes, I would.
I am still having weird probs wth 500fsb on 0107 so maybe my cpu just isn't that great.... 3.6ghz 1.33v looked promising but oh well! Time for a new one methinks??
I was going to ask.... it seems you guys don't like 0402...
Reasons?
hmm, all my motherboard problems (p5e) where related to bios 0402.
Board went completely unstable and lots of memtest86 1.7 errors.
Come on ASUS, fix this bios please!!
Got corsair xms2 2x1gig 6400c4dhx.
i cant make supreme fx2 work in xp pro X64. it shows up unknown devices , about 5 devices. i cant find drivers for it whatever i googled. has anyone made it work? i thought that it was the same stuff as supreme FX 1
My E6850 doesn't like over 465 MHz FSB with 0107 thus far. That's on 6x multiplier. On the 8x multiplier 453 MHz seems to be max stable OCCT BIOS 0107 2 x 2G G.Skill PC8000. E6850 CPU is L732A417 -- later batch? Later = slower? That's still without VDroop mod - I'll get a pencil & tape tomorrow.
Question:
I'm having issues getting my USB mouse and/or USB keyboard to turn on or "wake-up" this motherboard. I've never had an issue with any ASUS board and I've owned a ton of them. I've got all USB settings enabled and all of the proper APM setting enabled. Any body else having this issue?
I want to be able to hit the space bar or click the mouse to turn on this dang thing and can't get it to work!
UPDATE: So it seems that none of my USB devices have any power when the system is off - even a shutdown from windows. ALSO, everytime I do a shutdown, I get a loud chirp. WTF? Please help!
Why can't my USB mouse or keyboard start this thing?
 Same here... :ROTF:
P.S.: Now i'm testing my new Maximus Formula SE with lates bios... so far no problems.
I'm not hardcore overclocker, i like to run things fast an cool (on air).
So far Q6600 G0 @4x3.2GHz on default voltage and ram on 536MHz (ram needs a bit of tunnig to get it stable).
P.S. 2: You colud use 0303 bios and rename it to P5E.ROM and flash it again like you did before.
If you didn't try that already.
I had a very odd problem when I tryed to run 0402 BIOS. I could not load the sound drivers on to Vista 64bit. The sound worked if I used Microsoft's generic HD sound drivers, but if I tryed to use the correct drivers I would get error code 10, 'drivers could not start'. I tryed all drivers versions available including the latest version 6280 (available on the ftp site), but no luck.
Eventually I flashed back to the shipping BIOS 0107 via the BIOS corruption method and the problem went away.
Any idea's?
BIOS 0303 is better than 0107 for my E6850 -- stable now at 400 MHz FSB and 9x multiplier.
All is working ok including audio on Server 2008 Enterprise 64bit ( with vista 64bit drivers ) bios 0402.
All ... except of this low fsb :censored: ... maybe I will get any dual core cpu to check this...
Can anyone here use there USB keyboard or mouse to power on this board?
I can't.
Is this a problem with the 0402 BIOS?
Brahmzy
I have the USB mouse with 0402, everyone has a USB mouse no pS2 hole for a mouse right?
I saw your post below, sorry I cannot shed any light Brahmzy. :(
sparx
I just flashed from 401 to 402 on my P5E ... well, I rebooted and loaded the old OC profile... 463*8 on my 6850... it cant boot now... i am on default
So you CAN use your mouse to turn on the motherboard?
My USB keyboard and mouse work fine - but they won't TURN ON the board if I hit a key or click the mouse buttons - ALL other ASUS boards let you do this.
Reason I care is I've got my box in a semi-closed part of my desk where it's a pain to have to open a door and reach in and push the power button.
