Well, I usually run 4 instances with a quad for memtest using 350mb per instance with 2x1gb of ram, if running 2x2gb then I would try 500mb per instance for a quad, if a dual core I would run at least 500mb per instance of memset for 2 gigs total and 1000mb or a bit less for 4 gigs total memory per instance of memtest.

I usually let each 1 run between 200 to 300% and if it passes that, the ram IMHO is good to go. Most of the time it will error out within the first 100% or so of testing. Great way to test ram as when testing in Dos, ie; Floppy or CD at boot, it does not stress the ram as hard as it does in Windows.

Indeed mate, think we are close to a solution here... one of those sticks is not 100%... try them seperately and see which one fails... also the no boot with the first kit is not a good sign... hope you find the bad stick soon...

ive isolated the stick that fails blend, tried both of those "unstable ones" separately and one failed after minute or less the other is running blend for 10 mins now without errors, but there r no problems booting with the unstable stick, ill try playing games and 24/7 work with the unstable one and with one stable stick and see how they react, is there any chance of RMA or what?

Yep tell RAMGUY that on the Corsair forums mate and give him a screenshot (CPU-Z of CPU total speed, ram speed and the blend fail) of the working stick and one of the bad stick... he will guide you through the RMA procedure

Data corruption, reboots, I would not live with that even if it happened only once a day... you still got one working kit work with that one and RMA the other kit...

What should I have my NBv set at for a 440fsb and 8gb of ram at 1100mhz? I cant see it being much more than 1.32. I think I got a bad kit. My old kit runs fine at 1100mhz 8pl 2.1v bios, 1.26NBv bios. The ocz reapers have a new look and the sticker says 2.2v! Im pulling out my hair trying to get them stable. Im passing memtest, but getting BSODs during a Prime Blend or while running memtest 3.8 while the screen saver came on. I moved the mouse and the screen whent white and bsoded a while later. Im also failing 3-4 out of 30 runs of IBT. I have tried a trfc of 55 and a pl10 and it just takes a while longer to bsod in a prime blend. I just tried for 1055mhz, pl8, trfc55, 2.1v bios, 1.32 NBv and had an error on one core in a blend test in 5 minutes could have been the NBgtl I just set it back to auto (I had allways passed all tests at auto). I also bumped up the NBv to 1.38 because Im irritated and its running now. Its only been 15 minutes.

@jdmR - Without removing the heatpipe assy and cleaning the paste off the chip and reading it, no.

Yes template is for 6Gb... I would try the above template and see if she's stable with the 4 dimms... PL tweaking is for later

LLC works pretty awesome on the P5Q Dlx...

do u guys think i would notice any difference by reinstalling vista ultimate 64 in ahci sata native mode ? ncq would be enabled and how much would that improve system responsiveness?

How do you successfully enable the two orange SATA ports? I have one spare SATA HDD that I want to run off it, but when I enable it in the BIOS, Windows hangs while loading. Any suggestions?

Basic setup in BIOS is enable the jmicron controller then drive expert.

you say,"Windows hangs while loading". Did the orange drive have windows already installed on it and it hangs when booting from it? or does windows on your other hard drive fail because you enabled the orange slots? Did you install windows on your orange slot drive and now it won't boot?

No, I have Windows on a RAID 0 array that runs off the Intel ICH10. Anyway, I got it working by uninstalling the Marvell SATA drivers and let Windows install its own drivers. It's recognised as "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE controller" now, but both my IDE DVDRW and the SATA HDD that's connected to the orange port works fine now. eSATA however doesn't work anymore, but I guess that's the price to pay.. :shrug: Unless anyone has any suggestions to what drivers to use on the Marvell controller for this to work?

Bandwith wise regarding my daily clocks not much difference at first sight... voltage wise I can run now with 1.25 instead of 1.256 for the same 4ghz, seems a positive evolution to 1406...

Only weird thing I had : I flashed the bios, reset to defaults, set my OC... first boot it was stock FSB (333), second boot FSB okay but ram in sync and third boot all was like set in the bios...very weird indeed... Linx'ed it , OCCT done and gamed upon it, seems stable...

EDIT : further testing allows me to lower PLL, NB and FSB Term voltages :

Old bios -- New bios
PLL 1.56 --> 1.52
FSB 1.26 --> 1.22
NB 1.26 --> 1.22

I can leave Static Read Control enabled now with clock twister MODERATE (before Light) with the 2GB dimms... This should give a small advantage in bandwith and a slight drop in Latency... but nothing earthshaking More testing later.

Stability testing continues : survived a 4 instance 32Mb Hyperpi already, linX and OCCT tomorrow....

Well Vcore acts a bit differently then before : Think Martin.vr already mentioned that : my board tends to overvolt a bit more then before when being loaded...

With 1406 bios I had to set 1.256 to get 1.24 idle and 1.26 loaded under LinX ( CPU-Z readouts )
With 1611 bios I have to set 1.25 to get 1.24 idle and 1.26 loaded under LinX ( CPU-Z readouts )

Under prime it's funny that the board seems to give less juice as it tops at 1.256

The PLL, FSB Term and NB voltage needed to be that high to remain stable under IBT of LinX with 1406, 1611 allows in my case (with the QX9650) to lower them voltages considerably...

Maybe I'm an isolated case, the Vcore I'm pretty sure it acts up like that on several boards... for the rest you guys have to find out... Issue for me is that I cannot verify all the readings with my DMM as I've built the board into a case with all wiring neatly modded... and I'm not eager to pull everything out again... (before I had one board on a testbed ) so for the Vdimm I'm still at 1.92 will try to go lower there today...

Second thing : I mentioned before was that I could run Static Read control enabled this time... After some testing it seems that the bios engineers reversed it's function... look at the below results at 4ghz (in bold the better ones ) : (scores are run after a fresh restart, best out of three)

400FSB - 1002Mhz ram speed - 266 strap - Clock Twister Light - PL 9

SRC Enabled : R 8210 W 8471 L 63.3
SRC disabled : R 8255 W 8474 L 63.1

400FSB - 1066Mhz ram speed - 400 strap - Clock Twister Light - PL 8

SRC always looked like that on my rig.

i havent tested 1611 for lower voltages yet, but its stable on the same settings as 1406. im not seeing any performance difference. 1501 didnt work too well for me.

i am able to enable it, but my scores have always been worse with it enabled. i would concider that normal. everything is usually backwards for you quad guys so maybe they did fix it so it behaves the same way as a dually does :shrug:

i try Static Read Control to Enable / Disable it have the same result (nothing change)

but the change from 1306 ---> 1611 to me is Lantency improved from 55.9 to 55.1 (Clock Twister from Moderate to Strong)

E8400 E0, 550x7.5, 1100 CL5, PL 11

And another try to lower vPLL, vFSB, vNB but i seem doesn't work at all (can't lower than 1306)

i used to have blend test fail with all 4 worker threads within 5 mins but now with this 1611 bios only one core fails within a minute and the rest keep going on forever, whats going on?

Is the CPU small FFT stable ? prolly still some more NB and ram tweaking required

I was actually doing to some testing with static read control yesterday.

For me it doesn't seem to do anything, on or off or auto, Everest results are so close i'd call it margin of error.

Does anyone actually know what static read control does?

But even moreso, what is read training & OC charger?

I also tested with those on & off, & same thing, i really could not find any measureable difference.

Does anyone know of a pencil mod for this board? For some reason I am getting better clocks with LLC disabled, but the vdroop is just...atrocious. I'd really like to vdroop mod it if its possible.

Well, I hate to tell you this...but LLC *IS* the pencil mod...only it's been put into the BIOS for you by ASUS...so the answer is no...no pencil mod.

Does anyone use the top PCI slot above the PCIe 16x slot? Was wondering if any conflicts occur when using that PCI with a graphics card?

I use that slot for my sound card without issues. I don't think any of your ports should have issues of any kind at all. Unless, of course, your cards take up two or more slots.

Best I can determine, but not likely any new info...

DRAM Static Read Control: Enabled should tighten the Performance Level/tRD/MCH Static Read Control Delay, however it seems like a negligible setting compared to the manual options of the Ai Transaction Booster. Previous ASUS boards, and likely this one, are unstable with Static Read Control enabled and Ai Transaction Booster set to manual.

Ai Clock Twister: Determines the number of memory access phases (CHA-B,PH1-4) that are tightened/pulled-in to the next lower PL/tRD, of course you could manually enable each under Ai Transaction Booster.

DRAM Read Training: Enabled should tighten memory settings, how, I have no idea, seems negligible in testing.

MEM. OC Charger: Enabled, I have seen explained as a signal quality compensation mechanism, how, again no clue.

ive bought 2 x TWIN2x4096-8500C5D G kits like 3 months ago and immediately ive started getting spontaneous system restarts once every two days or something, i thought it was my vista ultimate 64 acting imperfect like it is but then i started clocking the system and i noticed theres always failure in blend mode in prime 95, yesterday i tested all sticks separatelly in blend and all came thru for coupla hours xcept this one stick which always failed within first 2 minutes, now the question is, even though i can boot and play games and do everything with this "faulty" dominator stick, should i RMA or are occasional restarts and OC instability something i should live with?

I would recommend using www.memtest.org to test your memory configuration. Load setup defaults in the BIOS and then manually configure the following settings:

Memory Votlage: 2.1v
Memory Frequency: 1066MHz
TCL: 5
TRCD: 5
TRP: 5
TRAS: 15
Command Per Clock: 2T

Test each module one at a time in the slot closest to the CPU, if you get 3 modules which pass, and a single module giving you errors then you likely have a failing memory module. If all the modules pass or all the modules fail, then there may be some other issue. Let us know your results!

Here is a guide to help you with memtest: so i followed his guide and burned a memtest iso to a bootable cd and setup bios exactly as he said and left memtest86+ overnight and when i woke up there were 24 passes and not one error, 24 damn passes with 8 tests each and no errors! and then i boot windows and start prime 95 and voila it fails after less than 1 minute, this stick was always failing blend after less than 1 minute while all the other sticks were stable, and now this stick does 24 passes with no errors??? how the hell am i to interpret that???

Anyone have a recently purchased P5Q Deluxe? What is the revision number on your board? Mine is 1.03G for example.

i'm just wondering because at the CPU FSB and memory setting i always and be able to use PL 8 in P5Q-D's BIOS with 2x1GB, 4x1GB, 2x2GB and 4x2GB RAMs and all version of bios available since the first bios that came with the board.

a quad w/4gb might be a bit tougher... but i can easily do 5:6 1200ddr pl8 1.98v. pushing it i can do pl7... on a wolfy w/2gb.

I've experienced the same thing mate... memtest in dos is not conclusive with 2Gb dimms... my stick fails with HCI Memtest in windows yet passes with glory in Dos...

Yep corrected, I have to verify at home though for PL8, thought it was a no boot with the Qx CPU

i use Q9300 with P5Q-D for sometime now. when i first got the board and still playing overclocking cpu and ram with it i used to use 4x1GB RAM and that was during before and a little bit after 0803 BIOSes, i've been using all kind of bios settings and also use every bios files back then.
but right now i don't overclock much on this system, it's been setting for the last few months as a 8GB system that i use it as my working PC.


here's my BIOS setting, with the 1406 version on the board, Q9300 at 450fsb, 8GB of gskill Pi kits at DDR2-1080 PL8, 5 disk drives with 3 drives in RAID-0, vista x64. this setting (includes PL8 setting) has been system stress tested many times and i find it's stable enough for me to actually trust and use it for my working PC. i was just wondering about you using PL 9, i don't mean anything bad and it does not mean anything bad if you cannot set PL 8, it could be because of the CPU or RAM that you're using on the system.

If you only have problems when using all four modules together, then you may be running into a loading issue on the memory controller. The easiest way to resolve this would be to drop the memory frequency to DDR800 to lighten the load on the memory controller. If your problems go away when running four modules at DDR800, then you may need to overclock the motherboard in order to get the system stable at 1066MHz with four modules. In many cases you can set the northbridge voltage up to about 1.5 volts in order to give the board more head room with four modules, however overclocking results can vary, and must be done at your own risk.


so how do i oc the mobo, i lowered the memory to 801 mhz but prime crashes in less than a minute, long before i get any worthy results, what do i need to do to start prime working again without crashing? if i can only make prime stable at 800 mhz i bet blend wouldnt fail anymore and then i could search for stability on 1066 mhz

You said you tested them separately in blend, and one stick failed. Leeghoofd speaks the truth, Memtest86+ isn't the be-all, end-all of 2GB dimms. Not sure about Corsair, but not every supplier bins the individual ICs on the module, one might be holding you back in Prime95 with the heat/noise generated by the blend test.

Now if Memtest86+ is passing each module, and Prime95 is only failing with four modules, its not conclusively the Ram, more likely the memory controller/NB

blend was failing with all 4 sticks and with only the "faulty" one, so i kinda suspect that fokker, but then again, id love to become stable at 800 mhz so i could test him again

It will not be the first time a supplier has rated a module higher than its ICs can handle, worth trying at 800 depending on what OC your going for.

ok im at 3.4 clock now and 800 mhz memory and prime 95 caused bsod after running blend for 2 minutes, this is what the bsod looks like:

it seems this clock is too big for 800 memory coz bsod says the clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allowed time interval

If I'm understanding correctly, you have 3 modules that pass individually at 1066, and 1 module that will not even pass at 800, yet they are all kit rated at PC2-8500 2.1V. *cough* RMA *cough*

i pulled the mobo outta the case , reseated the vendetta 2 with some new silver grease and now im getting nice lower temps at 3.4 ghz and blend is stable at 1003 ram for half an hour now

update: prime crashed (blend didnt fail) after 40 mins, seems like theres still some instability but i bet it could be solved by pumping up some more NB


ok i managed to get ahci mode without reinstalling windows, it was working in emulated ide mode all this time and it just doesnt cut it for me, the system is much more responsive now and cpu util iz 0

heres what u do before changing to ahci mode in bios

i later installed Intel Matrix Storage Driver/Utility. After that all old IDE Device/IDE ATA/ATA entries in device manager are gone and replaced by Intel ICH10R AHCI Controller.

This is already a new revision with the lower caps near the PCI-E slot, so no issues to mount a GTX260-280

Then when in windows run CPU-Z and see if your chipset revision is 3, most users here have a rev2

Welcome back, I have no clue mate at the moment mate, board is in the case but I will have to rip it apart for testing a Xirex watercooling kit and on friday I hopefully will have the Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P on test...

But with my quad I can run slightly lower values then before, Vcore here overvolts a bit more under load, ram voltage seems stable as before (0.08 overvolting)... I noticed SRC effect is reversed (enabled is slower now lol), but there are contradictive results on that matter...

O.k. I ran CPU-Z and mine says this: Rev 1.xx then the other box says, Rev. A3 ... Is this a newer one an old one? Can't seem to find the 1.03G that the person above me mentioned his was.

I have an e8600 running right now at 4.4GHz using a TRUE BLACK with just 1 fan on the HSF. I have no fans in my case as it's just torn apart and still have work to do it. My temps are pretty high because of it. at Load it's between 60c to 68c (running prime 95). My voltages are: vCore - 1.33v. I upped my Mushkin memory to 1.9v and uped the NB to 1.14 volt. So far so good. I tried 4.5GHz and it failed prime95 after 30 minutes. I upped the voltage to 1.38 for the 4.5GHz test. The temp on that was between 70c to 77c for load. Probably because it's an oven in the case with no fans! lol ... I'm still a virgin with this setup and learning a :banana::banana::banana::banana: load from all the posts in this thread!

I just received this board and I am experiencing problems. My specs are in my signature, but I am of course using a different motherboard.

The PC will not POST. No beep codes are given and the screen and USB devices do not turn on. I have stripped down the PC to only the necessary parts. (No hard drives, one stick of memory in the yellow slot near the socket, and no other connections like for the USB bracket.) I cleared the BIOS just because it was the first power on. I get the proper beep code when I removed all the sticks of RAM. So I removed the VGA card from the blue slot and kept it out of the system, no beeps at all. (It said I should get one long beep with three short beeps if no video card was installed.) I moved the card into the black slot and the same thing, no beeps at all, just the same black screen with no video signal input. Anyone have a clue what might be the problem? :shrug: I lost two screws that hold the motherboard to the case. Are those screws needed to ground components as well as secure the board?

Mine has the 1.03G written on the motherboard itself, somewhere, sorry I can't remember where but it was on a small sticker if i remember right.

Interested to see if that A3 OC's or performs better too yepp, but it might be hard to tell unless someone can compare them both side by side, or heard what changed from A2 to A3 p45 chipsets.

the 1.03g can be found on the bottom right of the p5q deluxe on the motherboard

i bought mine from newegg 2 weeks ago and its the same sticker as 3dchipset as well as its a 1.03g. the 3 means 3rd revision for the nb right?

Verify with CPU-Z, mine is an A2 yours hopefully is an A3

Tried to use another dimm ? are you sure all the required cables are hooked up ? unplug everything also PSU, even the CPU... verify if it doesn't have any bend pins in the socket area... then rebuild everyhting outside of the case with another dimm (try different ram slots too)

If no go, either your vidcard is dead or the mobo is DOA

What's the trick to flashing an older BIOS? It keeps sayying my current BIOS is newer and won't flash the older.

I suppose you are trying to flash via windows then ? I would only recommend to use EZ flash via the bios... till now no negative experiences at all.
With windows update some dead boards due to corrupt bios

I always flash with No OC at all and one dimm ( so bios default settings loaded and just altered Dimm voltage to correct value ) I put the new bios on an USB stick and press Delete on the reboot, via EZ flash I had no issues to downgrade...

I was using the latest afudos with no luck. I even tried ez-flash 2 in BIOS and same results.

The problem was the boards response to some D9 GMH. I tried 4 sticks of Ballistix memory individually in every slot, no POST from any combination. I then used one stick of my friends name brand DDR2 and the board posted just fine. I just use 4 gigs of powerchips.

Got an issue with reaching same OC I have used for months, before updating my BIOS today.

Ive been running Q9450 @ 3,2Ghz for 4 months with '1003' BIOS for Asus P5Q-E without any issues with the following settings:

CPU Ratio: Auto
FSB Strap: 333
FSB Freq: 400
PCIE Freq: 100
DRAM Freq: DDR2-801

CPU Voltage: 1.2
CPU GTL voltage: 0.630
CPU GTL voltage: 0.670
CPU PLL Voltage: 1.52
FSB Termination Voltage: 1.12
DRAM Voltage: 1.8
NB Voltage: 1.12

Everything else on Auto.

Today i had some 'crash' which made it impossible to boot, totally unrelated to my OC though. Had to reset BIOS to fix it.
Anyway, since it resulted in default Bios settings I thought I might as well update my bios from 1003 to 1406 at the same time.

The issue is, Im nowhere near stable OC with same settings again. Im not even passing the Windows loading Screen. I tried to up the voltages a bit on vcore, NB, PLL, but still crashing during windows load.
I got in with FSB at 366 (havent tested for stability since I just got in), but thats quite a difference compared to pre-update.
Can an updated BIOS really make that much of a difference? Any advice on which setting might be the culprit? Or if I should just downgrade to an old version.


Edit: Managed to get into Windows with FSB at 380. Prime survived for less than 1 min... feels like something is really :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed up :(

Sorry for doubleposting, but after reading more of the thread, regarding Q9450 and P5Q I thought it might be relevant.

After not being able to OC much at all (if at all, didnt try lower than 380 FSB, which crashed instantly) with 1406, I downgraded to 0803.
Now it seems to run perfectly fine with my old OC (400FSB).

Ive used 1003 until now though, which afaik did have CME, so I dont know if it is in any way related, but something was really bad for me in 1406 at least.

Yeh, me. 996599 model to be exact. Running at 1066MHz, 5-5-5-15 timings, 2.04V and 1406 BIOS

No OC yet, most options on auto or default values. My cooling isnt here yet ^^

Same issue here. I can not downgrade from latest bios! :down:

Only one way to solve it lads,

1) power off (pull the power cord)
2) remove the 2 bios (plz keep an eye on how to place them) chips : the pc boots from the right hand one so 1611 pull that one first and put aside
3) put the one on the left on the right hand side
4) Boot Pc and enter Bios
a) either you can continue to use this chip and flash it with eg 1406 or
b) you can open EZ flash to HOTFLASH the 1611 chip (that used to be on the right hand side) continue to step 5
5) no fear while the pc is running (in EZ flash tool) : pull gently the bios chip and replace it with the 1611 chip version
6) continue to flash 1406 or bios of preference
7) 1611 is reflashed with bios of preference

I just did this as the Asusupdate tool gave me some warning of it not being the correct eeprom and the above method worked fab ( I got one 0803 and one 1406 now )

Just make sure when pulling the bios chips that you don't use too much force as the pins bend easily (luckily they don't break rapidly)

ok that setup booted into windows at 1.16875 vcore, it wasnt very stable though, bumped vcore to 1.17500 and managed to get small fft prime stable for 5-10 mins before computer restarted on its own, bumped vcore to 1.18125 and again it restarted this time after some 15-20 mins prime, now im almost sure it wasnt the cpus fault it was restarting so i bumped vcore back to 1.17500 and raised nb to 1.3 and prime crashes now but theres no system restart so i must be on the right track, real temp is reporting warmest core at 61 degrees so thats sweet, what do i do to make it stable?

Just leave vcore as it is now try other changes first , i see that you got low VID chip as it runs 61c already on 1.17500 voltage so it could be fine voltage for that FSB :up:

core temp is reading VID 1.2375v and im running 1611 bios, does the cpus vid suck for a C1 revision? how much more nb voltage headroom do i still have at this clock ?

In my opinion VID cant suck, it is what it is. But your temps are pretty high for just that voltage!

but still far from "non" safe limits, make it stable and you got nice 3.6Ghz clock there!
