Hey Samurai,
You do know about the other thread right?
Asus Maximus Formula *Part 2* *Help / Overclocking / Guide*
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=168119
I'm "this" close to ditching SLI and going back to the loveliness of an Intel board...motivate me. :D
And I already finished Crysis. :D Here's to hoping for a nipple-less version along w/ an EVGA GTS tomorrow.
PS. Fry's Tempe's out of all this stuff, I recommend staying home all morning tomorrow.
:p:
what a bummer,,crysis with cf was so sweet untill one of my raptors took a dump. now i got to get another one and start all over..
Here's to looking forward to actually creating a mirror from an existing drive...stupid Nvidia RAID. Wo/ SLI and a considering the great layout of this board, I may be even be able to squeeze a real RAID card in there!! :D
The CPU/MB needing the 3.3v???
ASUS tech needs some time to think at it???
And many here also think it???
noobsystems.Org, should this forum called
Sorry, but how people (I'm not directed personally to you, Zucker) would like to OC a Q6600 on this board when they even don't understand the basics, how to flash a bios, how to downgrade it (despite all what is said, this AFUDOS and ASUSUPdate older version are now some 4 years old tricks), components limits...
Best advice to all people discovering the OC: it is not something you're granted and can RMA you components if you can't get it, it is just something needing time (yes, not only 12h...), readings (not only xtremesystems forums plenty of wrong affirmations), some history (yep, silicone is silicone since the 80th) and to be meticulous...
Better I should have some holidays :surf:
jonny ftm:clap:
Really not like to flame.
I bookmark this topic and every time take the time to read the new posts. Believe me, some questions are answered more than 5 times (the downgrade one for example)
But you're true, that's why I said, I need to go :surf:
Then I'll be calm
Hope just people take time to bother and make a little search, just a google, before asking a question. Will be so much helpful for all, instead of the forum being a hotline for help.
I even didn't comment on a post saying just:
"come one brother" or something like that, "some one list your Q6600 settings"
Just that, from a 3 posts user if I do remember...
Anyway, a nice place is here, after all,
Bye
I ask a downgrading question because Asus doesn't let you downgrade the bios in their EZ Flash Utility . If you had the board maybe you would understand its not that simple. Even with the 6.0 utility I still can't do it . It acts like a biatch maybe its Vista because I think I could only do it on XP either way you shouldn't be here flaming people and this thread is about the motherboard so maybe you should gtfo if you aren't here to contribute or ask for help . :yepp:
i used xp32... i haven't bothered with vista. don't like it, it's way too bloated for me. xp64 is nice as are various distros of linux. hell, linux *bling* will blow away vista while using much less of the system resources.
I just installed SP1 on Vista 32bit
It actually improves everything ALOT, boot time is faster, gained 250 points on 3dMark.
My only :banana::banana::banana::banana: is the freaking watermark "Evaluation Copy"
must not be to hard to remove it
Well d00d, I for one appreciate all your help here so a "flame" doesn't bother me even if some of it is directed my way, but honestly I do think of this thread of a sorta help line. Just this thread, not thread 2 started by kup. Hell I am always installing new sh*t, encoding video (done testing and pushing limits so I am encoding now and some gaming), so researching stuff like 8 phase voltage regulators I have not gotten to yet, because of limited time. I know electronics and can understand schematics and principles, I just can't do analog design using all the formula's, high speed digital timing is a PITA too. Anyway, I have still yet to research x phase VR's which is what I will have to do since noone answered the questions at hand. I will post when I find out. Like you I always check in here and the water cooling section also. Thinking about phase change too maybe... Keep in good spirits m8!
It's surprising we get a flame in here. Shoot I'm surprised I haven't been flamed . I ask some dumb ass questions . LOL
I got some action going here: You can call it quad x quad x quad, ie. quadcore x 4x1GB RAM x 32mb pi x4.
Could sb. recommend air/passive-motherboard-cooler for the complete motherboard without cpu-cooler with one of the HR-05 series for NB and sth. for the rest, SB and the voltageregulators around cpu socket.
To find cooler that fit, you have to know, tha I have a TRU120E mounted vertically with one 1200 fan on each side, back and front. And I have an 8800GTS with HR-03+ and HR-11 installed. The HR-03+ is mounted downside and the HR-11 is between TRU120E and case backside, here is a pic:
http://www.abload.de/thumb/imag0001s0y.jpg
The Dominator fan isn`t mounted anymore, very bad quality and noisy/loud.
I read sth. about that in one of these threads, but the system was different and I couldn`t find out what will fit in my system.
yes i did, back at 0802 now. i'm still trying to decide between 802 and 602. i just don't understand how everybody is having such a great time with 0903, i couldn't boot with anything other then auto. it was very strange, but i'm obviously guessing it was user error somewhere along the line.
No worries Grnfinger. I believe it expires 6-2008. It needs to be uninstalled prior to installation of the final. Go to control panel/programs/view installed updates. Highlight: Service Pack for Windows (KB 936330) and click remove. You'll be good for the final and the watermark will be gone. So we've been told. :)
I subscribe to MS TechNet, here is the link for both 32 and 64 bit
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../bb969139.aspx
this is the standalone version
I also have the user32.mui file to remove the watermark altho it is widely available via google
Welp I replaced my 4x 1gb of DDR2 1066 Balistix w/ 2x 2GB of Gskill DDR2 1000 they lowered my nb temps a bit but don't seem to overclock as well, I decided to drop the multi and up the bus speed to 400 also and test from there as the 333 fsb strap wasn't playing nice w/ the new memory.
:ROTF: apparently you haven't tried using many settings... but anyways the problem is prime and not the motherboard. the code for doing SFFT's has a bug in it (blend is fine). I recreated the problem with <1.5 vcore.
just use auto or 266. I had trouble with past bioses and haven't tried other straps since.
Um, blend does not put the same load, nor gives the same temps as small FFT, and hence current draw. Try running 4 instances of TAT. Same issue. Are you measuring power consumption to confirm I'm wrong, and if so, how, or are you again just assuming things? Have you properly debugged Prime and found the bug, and notified the author of what it is, exactly?
A bit off topic but I scored a BFG 8800GT OC from Bestbuy today for 229 OTD after taxes and coupon. Score !!!!
I hate to ask this here but how good are these scores :

Experiencing some strange computer issues for the last few days.
Everytime when I start the pc after it being off overnight, when it loads Vista and the indexing starts, my computer bsod one time only.
After a restart it never happens again, prime or OCCT all stable.
Anyone else having something similar?
Is 34c to hot for this board. The current room temp is like 79 f.
Thanks for your help. New to the OCing. Should I just bump up the threshold on pc probe?

I just tested the ram and it passed, so I can rule that out but I suspected it was not the problem.
I feel better I'm not the only one with this problem.
Tonight I will try to find a possible soloution, if 2 ppl here have the problem then there must be alot more out there on other forums. So perhaps there is a fix other than exchanging this board which I am leaning towards more and more everyday.
New system arriving monday, with maximus se board what bios do you guys recommend flashing to? im gonna be on on vista 64 and read about the stories of being unable to flash back so what would you guys think is best?
I beleve you are right, the x38 was I think designed for DDR3. I saw a pic of your rig about 8 weeks ago on this thread, and was impressed.
I will be pooting mine together this week when the last of the parts I ordered arrive. Will be using Qx6850.
Case: Gigabyte 3D Mercury
CPU: QX6850
Mem: Kingston KHX6400D2ULK2/2G (2 Kits) 4g total 3-3-3-12
Board: Maximus Formula Rev.3
GPU: 2 Saphire 2900xt's
HDD: 2 W/D Raptor X's
I have been reserching the maximus threads for a while before I made my decission, I opted to get the non SE board because it sais Rev.3 on the board right next to Maximus Formula, and I hope this Rev. solved the glitches I have been seeing; So I pulled of the imitation copper, and installed my own water cooling on it. I used the Koolance CH-120 on the NB, the CH-120-V06 on the SB, and 2 VR-AS40 coolers for the mofset memory. I also used Koolance VID-290 coolers for the video cards.
If this revised board buggs out on me like the others did, I am going to go with the Maximus extreme, and get DDR3
Anyone know what page of the thread had the pic w/ the 40 or 60mm fan on a metal stand off w/ washers above the NB? I was looking back through the thread and couldn't find it.
Ok guys, from Mc2k I got that link for compatibility HR-05/HR-09:
http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/0...cl.htm#asusx38
-For mosfets "HR-09U Type2" and "HR-09S Type2"-
Has anyone one or both coolers and can tell, if it fits right and over all mosfets?
In some OCs using prime SFFT won't load one of the cores correctly giving 75% only usage. it will load all the cores correctly if you kill prime and restart it. it will sometimes say 75% but it will be loading all the cores. I was only testing the 32bit version under xp. I was using 25.5a.
I am new to this so please be gentle :P do any of you have a recommended settings for 2.8 using air cooling? I'm using the Q6600 Go with Dominator 1066 2G. Right now I have it set at like this
Core Speed 2808.4 MHz
Multiplier x Bus speed 9.0 x 312.0 MHz
FSB 1248.2 MHz
Memory Frequency 624.1 MHz (1:2)
Timings 5-5-5-15
till I get my new cooler I don't want to go too overboard and I would like the system to be fast but stable. Also since I have the voltage set to auto should I change this for these settings or will that make any difference?
thanks for any help
64bit Cinebench 10 @4.4Ghz under vista x64 RC SP1
I am not sure if you are talking about a setup like this?
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=160606&page=2
Scroll to the bottom...
Guys, I'm experiencing some temperature problems with my board... with 1,6V NB and my SB voltage set to auto, my temperature are respectively 45 degrees for the northbrige and 40-42 for the southbridge...
Today I decided to remove the heatsink to clean the old paste (or should I say glue) and I even lapped a little bit bot the north and the southbridge copper sink and I applied some MX-2 and the temperature did not change!
I'm really pissed... to remove the old paste I had to lap a little bit the north bridge so I voided my warrenty and my temps keep still sucks
Any clue? :(
BTW I'm using the NON-SE version...
you should of just removed the IHS from the NB.
And how am I suppose to do so? If I remove the IHS do I need to put Thermal paste?
I just placed a 80mm near the northbridge area and my NB themp dropped to 38 degrees lol :D
:shakes: Nope but thats a neat build you have going there :) It was earlier in the thread that somone posted a picture of their board w/ a bolt replaceing one of the screws to hold down the NB heatpipe w/ a long screw and some washers along w/ wing nuts to hold up a 60 or 40 mm fan right over the fusion block area on the SE version but can't seem to find it anymore :shakes:
Why does it not happen with my B3 but it happens on my C0? I think the bigger question is why does it only happen on prime SFFTs and not blend, OCCT, cinebench, or video encoding? Why does the x64 version do SFFTs just fine? under xp the second 2 cores don't always max out. If I could create the problem in a different program then there would be some merit to blaming hardware but as it stands at the moment I can't.
edit: have you tried to do a custom run setting the Max FFT size to the max your cache size is? it runs at full load even under xp.
vista pic is just a pic of standard small FFTs.
Um, that's how I run prime. Check the stability testing thread from a few months back, I stated this there. I run prime 8k FFT to largest FFT that fits in cache, and I'm sure I'm one of the first to advertize running prime this way, because I'm more than aware that it's L2 cache speed capabilities that holds most core2 cpu's from getting high clocks.
I've also been playing with quads for about 8-9 months. Running prime is different on core2 than on AMD, becuase ofthe shared L2. With AMD, just running small FFT is generally enough for stability testing, especially since memorycontorller is contained within cpu.
I'm one ofthe few die-hards that insists on using prime for stability testing, and nothing else, becuase I'm more than aware of how to properly use it. I understand what causes what type of errors, and what needs adjusting in a system based on the errors it gives, and I do not call a system stable until it can runn a 2-3 day run of prime. 8-12 hours jsut isn't enough for me.
But like I said earlier, in respionse to your questions, the algorithm used in the small FFT test is the most cpu-intensive, while blend runs do not even genreate the same heat, and X64 allows the 32-bit program a different operating environment that does not put as much stress on the cpu(32-bit mode vs 64-bit), again, a function of the cpu.
It doesn't happen with your B3 because it's cache expires before current usage reaches the same limits as your C0, and OCCT, cinebench and videoencoding do not cause my system to draw even thsame power form the socket as prime does...however, when the issue is pushed to the extreme, I can get OCCT to do it too(my cpu shows issue @ 1.477, @ 1.625, OCCT has load issue as well)
Not alot of people understand how cache is limiting Core2. This is why Intel have gone to 6MB for new cpu's...the cache does not get thrashed as much, and can therefore supply the rest of the core @ higher frequencies before failing...the inverse is true for why AMD has issues getting higher clocks...:fact:
Fact of the matter is, I do undersand this issue, and it seems, at this point, even cpu's and how they run, far greater than you'd like to think.
Anyway, your pic is useless, sry. the issue is not shown except in processes tab. You show 4 cores loaded, but I can easily show the same...flop over to process tab(you are on performance, BTW, not like how my directions said...) and system process is using one of those cores. The issue is not getting load on all for cores, but getting PIRME loaded on all four cores. Also, none of your thoughts on the issue explain why lowering voltage will make the issue go away...I am stable @ 3.6ghz on G0 at a far lower votlage than what causes the issue, so it's currently not a "show-stopper" bug for me now...but only becuase I've understood the issue and took steps to correct it.:fact:
I found the real cause, and solution already thanks.
My B3 didn't have the issue and I tersted all the way up to 1.65 volts.
none of your thoughts explain why lowering voltage the under 1.50 caused the issue for me on my QX9650. The thing is I don't believe you know what's going on. I can create the issue but it doesn't affect me on the oc that I use day-to-day. I'd rather not listen to you talk until you can provide proof that you know exactly what the issue is. Prime is the old benchmark for stability here. I can be 24/7 stable on prime and it wouldn't matter the system must be proven to be also stable in other programs like occt, & Linux kernel compilation.
current consumption I measure as Intel says, by vDrop under load. I mean really, It's not like were talking about really complicated circuits here...um...do you own a digital multimeter? Do you have a device like a killawatt?
As I explained earlier, I understand the trigger only, not the exact component on the board causing the issue, other than EPU implementation, and hence the posting about it...
I mean really, like I said, I bought a new cpu, and don't havethe issue with this one, so I'm not here posting for my own benefit, merely for those that aren't able to buy a new cpu, and are stuck with this bug...
I don't understand your aggression towards me on this when I'm simply trying to help. Had you attitude been the same, rather than just denying the issue in the first place, we'd not be having this discussion now...
So, you've stated now that you CAN recreate the issue. At what settings are you doing this?
I don't think you understand that should this require some hard mods, that's something I'll end up trying...understanding and overcoming issues such as this is part of overclocking, and something I enjoy. I spend more money than some make in a month on this I like it so much. Screw drinking, or doing drugs, modding a car, or whatever else people do for fun...I'll take a soldering iron and circuit boards, thanks! ;)
I have a killawatt that I can use. I recreated the issue by running 10x400 with 1.41-1.42 vcore. if the pll is set to auto all will be fine. if I set the pll to 1.53-1.56 I will only have 3 cores fully loading under the standard SFFT. cores 2 or 4 will demonstrate that they are loaded but will not go past the 1st test nor will it error. I bump the pll to 1.58 or up the problem goes away. if I do a custom SFFT using 6144 in the max column I don't see the problem at all in any OC.
edit: auto for the pll voltage is listed as 1.63 in the bios.
Hi there guys..
Well back intha days i did my first install for maximus formula i posted this preety strightforward newbie guide on clunk the nice guy x38 victim forums:
http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/hardw...mod-guide.html
right now i have added two more smaller fans corner tightened with plastic cable ties to be placed right on top of the ram sinks, forget the corsair ram fans, horrible quality and it will steal some of the air going into the 120 extreme cooler for the cpu.
btw it was not on a nb hole, but on the mainboard middle hole, which is located perfectly for this double mini mod.
greeets
Does the 0902 I believe (or is it 0903?) beta bios completely suck or is my board a dud? I can only get 500 fsb when I run PL 9 :stick:
Also, how do I get the NB cooler off? It's glued on pretty well...
802 here, 4x1gb crucial pc6400, easiest way to remove NB is freezing.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...1&d=1197808640
nice clocks cadaveca:up:
I'm one ofthe few die-hards that insists on using prime for stability testing, and nothing else, becuase I'm more than aware of how to properly use it. You can add me to that club:)
I'm good up to 550x7, but that doesn't match my cpu clocks well(3825 before it starts to fail prime, or throttle), and won't stay stable with 4x1gb, but is fine 2x1gb. :stick: my quads drop off @ 466mhz+.
I thought I saw some1 reported a NON SE with a 1.02G rev tho.
thats explains :)
I received my Max Formula (non-SE) a few days ago and after testing several BIOS revisions, including 0903, I found 0401 to be the most stable so far.

so after a failed vista rc1 build 6000 upgrade tryout(the nvidia vga driver gets completely screwed up, just like in aero theme the windows become transparent, and i mean transparent really, u cant access them anymore lolol) and rolling back, im posting again to wrap it up here,
here´s two pics... i used in fact one extender bolt for the nb and ram fans, both in the same. if your config is vertical top down u can just use cable ties. if its BTX mount like mine, even better, gravity will help too lolol

so i managed to have no cables whatsoever running on top.
and yes, to all people complaining on bios 0903 my personal opinion is that regardless what your results are, over 400/450 fsb is in fact unstable. I guess asus wont present us with a new bios, not in christmas and probably no anymore.
I think i´ve reached the top regarding air cooling. More than 8 fans on a mobo is preety nooby....
next dream colling system after christmas: aquacomputer aquaduct 360.....
note: anybody successfully installed vista ultimate RC1 build 6000 ?? what about the clock hack, still workin..?

Grab yourself A Dell OEM version they were on NG's 2 days ago. No troubles with activation and updates
Well I got a Non-Se Rev1.03g and I'm at 3.7ghz with my Q6600, couldn't get pass 420fsb gave me a BSOD or probably not enough voltage. Ran memtest up to 2500% coverage didn't get any errors.

Cool, same TJ-06 I use for one of mine. Only thing to note is that the NB wll get upto 5C hotter and bout +3 on SB in that possition. I had to remove the NB/SB pipes and use aftermakeet on one and turn on side (like HTPC style) for the other to get good temps with stock coolers on mobo. I also added a clear plastic devider to keep the origional tunneled design since we cant fit the stock SilverStone model anymore. I just trimmed and fitted it from the front fan along the top edge of the VGA (using the majority of the card as the damm) to guide air toward the rear fan. The damm came completely to top of window and folowed length of cast toward back and proved to be functional, especially on model with ThermalRight NB/SB coolers and in upright BTX configuration.
Nice case.
Ok... thks nuckin... lolol btx format case can get your temp a bit higher 1-2ºc overall, but spacewise i find it much better. all components are at hand so u wont cut your fingers... i´m sure also the nb/sb/mosfet heat tubes are opposite than they should probably, but for the average low quality of fusion block compared with others is irrelevant. anyway my avg temps are on the low side, cpu idle-35 load 62/63, nb idle-37 load-45, and sb dont even care, got a fan blowing almost straight from outside. will still give a go on watering the NB fusion when i descend from air and plunge into water lolol
btw vista really improves performance with readyboost activated, pen drive formated to ntfs (specially if you can have a voyager gt at least 4GB). for all the rest.... cant find decents arguments for it (dont really care on dx10, still a long way to go)

Guys, Im having the HARDEST time OCing my Crucial Ballistix PC8500 2x1GB sticks on this board. Im on BIOS 903 and I cant sustain a POST after DDR 1016. I think I have tried EVERYTHING! Can someone shead some light on me please?
Tried different slots perhaps? white to blue or blue to white?
I'm gussin you must be on a devider for the speed you are asking for. So first off, the mobo NB and FSBT need some overvolting to keep up with the BUS load/stress, and of corse the RAM needs some more vdimm to keep the speed. I used 2.24 for 1152 in my 2nd profile on a 5:6 devider but NB need 1.52v and FSBT to 1.488v. That is with a dual, the quad with the same devider puts even greater load on memory with that devider so more FSBT and NB. My Q6600 on same 480x8 in 4;5 needs 1.55v on NB and 1.505v on FSBT with PLL of 1.712v and of corse CPU at 1.52v
Thr 1:1 with RAM frequency to AUTO and might as well leave strap to auto since ohte quad users are reporting no luck with any other strap then 266 with is defult for this CPU, so AUTO is just fine.
Good luck!
can i ask for a help???
what is the best bios for now for maximus formula second edition??
i want to put on the mobo a wolfdale
I'd recommend Bios 0903 for the compatibility with the newer CPUs. Some people prefer the earlier bios but 0903 is a major breakthrough in performance and overclocking, IMO.
thx my friend... :)
NP! :)
Check out the Maximus Formula "Part 2" thread too, for any queries you have!
Yes, I found this out the hard way. I must have shut off / restarted / cleared CMOS well over 100 times from trying all combinations of ram settings. Im now using the 400strap with my PC8500 ram operating @ DDR1130 with transaction booster enabled to "1" no way could I get this speed using the 266 strap, none the less with enabling transaction booster:up: My latency with timings at 5/5/5/8 is 49ns
49ns???
In Everest?
Something must be wrong on yours or mine since I have the exact same settings, and it's 53ns on mine in Everest and around 9600MB/s read throughput.
I'll check it again when I get home but you got me thinking, 4ns is a big difference.
So 5-5-5-8 and the rest is on AUTO yes? 2 DIMM's or 4 DIMM's? The latter shouldn't make a difference though except for the required VDIMM.
Is it normal that my maximus formula with latest BIOS(0903) can't measure core temp on QX9770? I used VapoLS but in bios I saw only +28\29 and +100=>reboot. +doesn't want to pass post check (sometimes) with high voltages (>~1.58v) due to wrong temperature monitoring.
0903. This is by far the most stable BIOS to date.
You might want to check your settings. I am getting what you see in the screenshot with 4x1GB sticks at DDR2 1215 5-5-5-15.

As a note, I am not running Trans booster.
DRAM Static Read - Enabled
Clock Twister - Strong
Trans Booster - Disabled
Relax - 0
yep I can confirm Renegades findings, for me I prefer Static read control enabled over transaction booster quick comparison at 9 x 333FSB with Q6600 :
First column Static disabled, TB enabled to 1, second column SRC enabled ; TB disabled relax level 0
Read 7964 --- 7954
Write 6098 --- 6095
Copy 6672 --- 6727
Latency 65.2 --- 60.5
I dunno how this works out for high FSB clocks, but we already saw some of this behaviour with P35 chipset on Asus boards... give it a shot NEWLS1 and keep us posted...
Tried that and got worse scores. sdumper and I have been through 100's of settings with this board. Our conclusion was Trans boost is to be off with relax set to 0 or 1. Static read on and Clock twister to strong if your RAM can take it. This yields the highest 3dmark06 scores, everest bench scores, and fastest Pi times.
