santa's coming :eek::eek: ???
wheres he going and what is he bringing (please say kirk with red and white sleeving)

and blue ;)
Insignificant update here ... just want to give a big shout out to both BlueAqua and to dualbrain. Nils/aka dualbrain/aka Santa, is sending me some new blue sleeving, and Kirk sent me some more heat shrink. I use a lot, because I tend to practice before doing the final version. And, don't everyone go pouncing on them, I'm sure they are doing what they can to get more sleeving available in the US.
On another note ... I emailed Sapphire about my dead 4870X2, and told them exactly what happened. The response I got "Why do you think your warranty is void? If you have the stock cooler, put it back on and we'll check it out." Welllllll, I'm in the midst of the RMA process. We'll see what happens, but at least there is a chance I will save the card. That spurred me to get my bu-- in gear and process the RMA for the Rampage Exteme mobo I killed a few months ago. Sooooo, no hard feelings on my part if these don't go through, but it's worth a try.
Good to hear on the possible RMAs shazza
Just stopped in to say Hi Shazza and see whats Shakin on Shakedown Street:surf:
Oh how I know about that. Man that's a hell of allot of work!
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...24_WLZV5-L.jpg
Question: How do you take such beautiful pictures all of the time? I just bought a Nikon D60 and a Proper Book on it but I am a n00b with it and have allot to learn.
Hey Shazza,
any new updates?
I just found these on PPC, I can't remember if you or someone else was looking for them: http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...oducts_id=2715
(UV blue PCI-E connectors)
Hi Brother E. I just try to get some decent light, use a tripod, and work on getting the focus and white balance correct. For pics like these, I just set the cables on a board (usually a white posterboard, open the front door to get some natural light and snap away. Takes a bit more work to get pics of the finished setup. Practice, practice, practice is what it takes for us amateurs ;)
Thanks, millertime. Yep ... in fact I ordered one of those last week, but they sent the 20-pin version. I think there's an issue with AC Ryan product stock at the moment.
No real updates. Waiting for more blue sleeving to arrive. Took about two days to get RMAs processed for the 4870X2, a Rampage Extreme Board, and an Ultra X3 1000W PSU. The Rampage Extreme was a nightmare, because ASUS said it had already been back 3 times. I never sent it back, so that means Newegg sent me a used board as a replacement for the one that died within their 30 day period. Had I known that was their option, I should have just waited and sent it to ASUS in the first place. But, when these go through, I'll have almost a whole new setup.
Did mess around a bit as I was sorting parts, and did this wonderfully neat build - it surpasses my previous attempts at cable management:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...18_pXSrU-L.jpg
(note sure what's happening ... this pic keeps disappearing?)
Great build!!! Love your work!
The last pic you just posted won't show here :(
Small update. Didn't want folks to think I'd done a "NaeKuh" on this build. Just not much time to work on the project. Got some more blue sleeving - thank you Nils
Also got a decent deal on a GPU that I think will work better for the final use of the AMD setup (HTPC) - picked up the Gigabyte 4870. Went with the Swiftech MCW60-Rev 2, as I've never used anything but the FC GPU blocks - and a bit more flexibility wrt the 4870 x 4890 cards.

Yes ... I know the fan comes off ;) I'll just leave the stock heatsinks on, and not use the optional arm for the MCW60.

WOOT updates :) Looking good Shazza
Shaz I am gonna bug you again: Will you fly out to PDXLAN 15 in JAN 2010 if I get you seats? I will introduce you to plenty of industry folks who will love your work. You can get a pelican padded case to bring a build safely. I will bring a monitor for you.
Shaz and I have been buds for a long time. If only we could get some of the other former NBF Scooby gang over here as well. A bunch of us were banned from NotebookForums and many more left when Dell bought out Alienware and a retard mod there weilded his homo ban hammer. Shaz and I made the move from being boutique owners to hardcore DIYers.
heh i was kidding DB.
I wouldnt have the time to goto a PDXLAN event anyhow.
Didn't say you would not be welcome...of course. If you ever want to go, PM me and we will find seats...
uhhhhh what is pdxlan and where is it ??
sorry for off topic
Aww that lan sure looks like it beats the crappy lans we have here :( Wish I could come. Beat all the boys asses in CSS and get free stuff WOO.
Yeah it does . . . . but then again ive never been to a lan nor is there any around western n.y. probably
^^ any help on that ?
Supreme work as always Shazza, love it!
Asus suck for RMA's. Nice to see it's not just me who have problems witht heir 4870X2's (I'm still waitin, supposedly getting a "marketing sample" that isn't back yet, so I'm getting a crappy used 1!)
~Bex
I know all of our experiences with hardware (well... everything) are subjective as an intrinsic side effect of our ape-ness. To date I've owned 6 4870x2 GPUs (all manufactured by Sapphire). 4 of them I've disassembled and installed EK GPU blocks on, ran them at full load for 58 days, 3 hours, 22 minutes, 45 seconds (well, 44.8 seconds :D) to analyze modular exponentiation in various residue number systems using variable i-bit moduli from 1 to 4096 bits paying no regard to small latency for the sake of recording max throughput data for further analysis and with the intent of demonstrating ATI StreamSDK's/GPU's strengths vs. NVIDIA CUDA's "framework"'s/GPU's untapped potential, despite supposed lack of StreamSDK driver support. Average temperatures across the 8 GPUs was 34 degrees over the mentioned time period. Then I took them out, removed the blocks. Dropped not one but TWO of them from my hand (approx 3.5' high) to hard concrete surface (carpel tunnel acting up... and only 24, gonna need replacement hands, fingers, wrists soon), then slightly agitated I through them all in a box then kicked the box under my bed for a few weeks.
Some riends told me to use them for gaming machines for a lan party, so indifferent to whether they would still work or not, reassembled the stock heat cooling systems, through them in 4 gaming machines, and played Unreal Tournament without glitch for about two weeks straight. One week in time after that (some time in mid November 08 I think) they were placed in my primary workstation where they have been acting as my near 24/7 computer's GPUs and space heater for the cold winter months. I tested them an hour ago after putting the EK GPU blocks back on AGAIN, and they still work marvelously .... As for the other 2.. well haven't opened them yet. :) So obviously my sample size proves that statistical strength IS on my side and that 4870x2s are superior cards (sarcasm) ... at least as far as sapphire goes (more sarcasm).
where was I going with this...? :p::shakes:
... :) Oh yeah, so the manufacture for your cards were all ASUS? Was that the case for Shazza too? I would place money that it was mentioned but can't find that answer atm. Anyway, my awkwardly and badly phrased banter up to this point was brain's attempt to query as follows (with of course more preface): I've had 3 friends with early to mid batch Asus 4870x2s completely die on them without extraordinary circumstances and soon after purchase. Now, with the grand total equaling 4, 5, 6? We surely have a statistically significant sample size to go and tear down the doors of ASUS and demand free stuff right? (post-modern-sarcastic-ism) :D
Arghh... I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to ask basically nothing and answer the same nothing thereafter... but I can't just not post this, for my carpel tunnel would slap me upside the dome for wasting its time writing a time wasting question/post and then deleting it.
Someone needs to send me an express ICBM via "air mail" ... would totally deserve it right about now.
... Love your build though Shazza, whatever GPU choices you make, keep it up and... OH GOD A TORNADO, gotta go!!! :D
We would not want to see me on the cover of any magazine :rofl:;)
@xaxis ... My 4870X2 is a Sapphire card. I have two of them, one has had no issues. I have to partially attribute issues with the card that is being RMA'd with PSU/mobo/user error issues. Have had a Danger Den block, then an EK block on it, and that wasn't an issue. Wasn't til I smoked it with a wanky Power Supply that I had to RMA it. It has been sent off, and I'm awaiting news.
Had a 2 year old Ultra X3 1000W PSU that was delivering only 9 volts instead of 12. That was a very easy RMA - they cross shipped a brand new one.
My Rampage Xtreme 775 motherboard RMA was a hassle. I did just receive the new board, have to send the old one back tomorrow. I found their RMA process very convoluted.
Gotta get back to finishing my build now ...
Hmpf ... you mean:
"We would not want to see me on the cover of any magazine AGAIN "
Shazza Cover
Truly sad story. Hopefully we can get this right again!
Ur rig on the cover and a two page write upside plus 1500 bucks, Shaz. U r silly gerl. I would love to she a shaz build in the spotlight
Just read the entire thread and love the build. It's nice to see what you can achieve with the TR.
Also you just shamed me into redoing my PSU sleeving again....it's hard to compete with PERFECTION !!
All of my 4870X2's bar 1 have been Asus, and the 1 NOT made by Asus is the only 1 that still works!
Asus and I talk far too often. They never have a replacement handy, and never give a good explanation. They've all been DOA or died randomly with no evidence of what caused it. All from pre January time. I'm convinced it's a manufacturing problem.
HOWEVER! I seem to have people with similar problems with Sapphire cards, which, funnily enough, die the same way my Asus cards :?
~Bex
I really don't know where you're getting your information NaeKuh, but AMD/ATI's graphics division is a fabless operation and all of their manufacturing/assembly is outsourced to over 24 manufacturing divisions alone in 9 different countries that I know of. Of course they have certain control protocols in place, but by no means would I say that the graphic's division is sourced (implying a closed lid/manufactured in house) by ATI, for that's simply not true. Notice I didn't say that was the case for AMD who does have two fab plants I know of off the top of my head, one in Dresden and another in Singapore. Now AMD as just AMD (no ATI) is very much so it's own FAB and sources controls and procedures to the point of gaining copyrights on those techniques. Perhaps that's what you were thinking of? Or perhaps I misunderstood you entirely.
:)
A little progress this morning:
The naked 4870
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...02_YCHRn-M.jpg
All dressed up with nowhere to go ...
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...86_NhvyX-M.jpg
The backside - very easy to install this block, a bit of MX-2 on the GPU chip and the lil' whatchacallits, slap it on and screw it tight:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...02_gSaHg-M.jpg
Experimenting with compression fittings ... not sure I'll use them, but they look like they will fit:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...58_m4KbV-M.jpg
Someone "gave me" some workspace in the garage, but I've filled it already. Here's the reason why my progress is slow - too many things going at once:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...44_pYwrR-M.jpg
looks good shazza :) but why not use the VRM heatpipe?
haha ok :)
btw soda breakfast = win  I know that whenever I get a build going full tilt I head to the store and grab a few 12's of dr pepper and go all night long
like the shots of the 4870 shazza. i'm sorry I haven't been following this thread lately. What ended up happening with the 4870x2. Did it die or what?
I love Shazza's builds, everyone of them ends up like a story :D Wonder what next one is gonna be like :p:
lol - the screwdriver ... even that suits the theme :)
Is there going to be a worklog on that Lian Li XB-01? I'd definitely like to see how that turns out
I haven't been following this thread closely either  I smoked the 4870x2 - literally. It's in for a potential RMA, but I have a spare. The 4870 is for the upcoming HTPC build.
Thank you, oggie. I'm sure the serious folks around here get annoyed at the off-trackedness of my wanderings, but guess they know not to click by now ;)
Yes ... purely coincidence, but I left it in since it matched. I'm awaiting arrival of my custom hollow-core screwdriver set, ready to be filled with Feser One
I thought it prudent to get a little further along before posting a work log - I'm not sure how the painting will turn out, let alone if I can get the case back together. Here's a few pics of WIP:

Taped for the painting adventure:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...97_oX7aj-M.jpg
I'm currently sidetracked with Tiger Woods 10 on the 360, so not making as much progress as I should be.
ooooh, tw10 is out??? I loved 09 how does 10 compare?
Dammit Shazza, this is looking way too good again.
You'll start costing me money again, craving for things like that :P
I skipped 09, but am enjoying 10. I like the new precision putting, but taking a bit of time to master it. Getting ready to play Bay Hill - a course I've played many times, and that's always fun.
Nothing much too exciting yet, but I've got plans for the next few days ;)
Have fun with the Torture Rack, jpm.
OKAY, a bit of progress made in the last couple of days. Pics aren't the greatest, but gives an idea of what I've been up to.
1st ... a reminder pic. This is what I accomplished a couple of weeks ago ... all my sleeving nicely done:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...00_8Pxtj-L.jpg
After killing my 4870x2 and giving up on the DA750 PSU, I finally buckled down and started over.
In my last go, I wasn't happy with the "bunched up" look of the 24-pin sleeving:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...5_qVL4T-XL.jpg
So, I tried just using blue wire (similar to what SNiiPE_DoGG is doing, it turns out - but, I'm sure he'll be much more successful):
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...00_sBewD-L.jpg
I couldn't control the wires, so I thought I'd try something else. I used extended heatshrink on the ends of each wire ... we'll see how it looks when put in place. (I cut the original PSU wires down and recrimped new pins on). Here's the 8-pin 12V connector:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...55_H2z5T-L.jpg
(The twisties are just there now as "trainers," to get the wires to stay together)
I opened up the PSU - (Corsair HX620W). This allows me to place some heatshrink into the box. I would have put the individual cables all the way in, but not enough room in the cutout - always possible to expand it, but I'll save that for next time). I'll shrink the heatshrink once I'm satisfied with my cable snuggling. You can't see it, but I cut back the 4-pin cable and tucked it back into the PSU.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...88_wg9a5-L.jpg
What else to do? How about some more BLUE - painted the top of the PSU. I'll leave the bottom black for now:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...57_uBTyb-L.jpg
Then, just for fun, a painted D5 Vario:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...50_f9Aon-L.jpg
Hmmmnnn ... wonder where that will go?
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...17_7bajA-L.jpg
(I've no idea how I'll set it up).
I liked how the half sleeving/half blue wire idea turned out....
Anymore blue and I'm gonna have to call this build "mama smurf"
Can't wait to how you install that TyphoonIII ... working with the torture rack you have to get creative with the space to work with .....
WOOT Shazza got some more pics. I was beginning to wonder if you forgot about us ;) How the RMAs going?
I like that idea too. That was the only thing I don't like about the sleeving. It makes the wires stiffer. I think your idea is a great fix
amazing work shazza. sleeving is sooo nicely done. I agree with millertime. What you are doing should allow for better flexibility of the wires
woohoo! Nice work Shazza! Love the sleeving :D
Shaz wait til you see what Geno and I are cooking up for uni-sleeve management ;) You have to admit . . . Geno rawks
shazza very nice setup... I need to stop looking at these build log threads.. It makes me want to buy stuff like a DD Torture Rack.. :yepp:
I think I'm a Grandmama Smurf ;) I'm not sure how I'm going to install the Typhoon III, but I'll get it worked in some how, some way.
Thanks, mt. Successful RMAs on the Ultra PSU and the Rampage Extreme Board. Waiting to receive the new 4870x2 - takes a couple of weeks.
Thanks, CP - we'll have to see if it indeed does look better once installed. Working on the 24pin now.
Thanks, James.
Sounds like you've got some exciting plans, pingpong.
Yes, Geno rawks  I do want to thank him for the very nice Typhoon III. Now I just have to figure out what's in and what's out, one loop or two ...
Thanks Lu(ky. I know what you mean. I have to put my credit card on ice when I read everyone's work logs.
Please tell me I remembered to throw in the slightly longer 3.5 m mounting screws...?
When mounting the T3 in 1/4" acrylic you need them...if I forgot just let me know and I will send yo some as they are a pain to track down.
Sexy wire btw =)
Oh my, was nearly at the bottom of the page :P
Waiting patiently for another update shazza, just don't rush it, make it as perfect as always
Thanks, BoxGods and matsjuw.
Actually got some work done yesterday ... finished the 24-pin sleeving. Now I have to cut the opening a bit bigger in the PSU (despite planning ahead so everything would fit :p:). I'm ready to go ... trying my first attempt ever with the dremel  - but cannot proceed until I run down to the store and pick up some safety goggles. Pics this afternoon, presumably.
Shazza, I have an organization method for the 24-pin wires you will see in a few days when I finish making it, simple but very clean :) I like the partial sleeving, it holds together very well
Shazza's making it very nicely coming together with a nice eye on detail !
shazza i might have asked this earlier but is this sleeving mdpc-x
Thanks for the comments, folks. You're killin' me, DB ... yes, I am a wussy wimp :)
A tiny update here ... got my safety gear ready to go, and my hubby helped me set up the dremel (hey ... I said this was the FIRST time):
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...1_FHEL3-XL.jpg
There is no doubt that Ashraf, Xaxis, and other talented folks have nothing to fear from my dremel skills :rofl::rofl: Happy to report no fingers were cut off, contrary to the expectations of my adult supervision.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...0_ahHKD-XL.jpg
After filing the rough edges down, humpty dumpty was all put together again:

Stay tuned for the next episode of "101 ways to kill a Power Supply"
:ROTF::rofl: I love the hardhat. That is now your mascot :yepp: ;)
That PSU looks awesome.
Shaz is making her hubby grow his hair long so she can sleeve it MurderMod style . . . .hope he is not bald on top though . . . .would be a Uni-Sleeve mullet . . .the ultimate in geek sheek
PSU looks beautiful!
Be thankful DB doesn't show you anything from his gross pictures collection. I have skipped many a meal after being blinded by the gross.
hehe ... thanks, guys.
Nope - the Mr. is not bald, but he is a tad worried about the sleeving obsession.
@ Nils ... well, you know it is a PS (Polar Secret) etching technique required to get the bear on the hardhat ...
@BoxGods ... after hanging out in various forums for 5+ years with DB, I'm afraid I've had my eyes burned more than once ;)
While the PSU looks decent, and the process has been a good learning experience, I'm afraid the final product will be a bit iffy. But, you don't learn if you don't try something different. Should have some pics of the PSU in place tomorrow.
Thank you! Glad you survived the action :D
Shaz saw me get banZored from NoteBookForums probably four years ago . . .I think the final straw was a pic of a an ATM machine modeled after some female anatomy which will go unnamed. She also knows why I think even the CEO of Alienware knew about my facination with midgets, crisco, and duct tape. Alienware send a roll of duct tape and a can of Crisco with my Alienware ALX order . . .seriously.
Now Geno has seen stuff I will not even post . . .poor fellow. Fortunately Fugger paid me not to post pictures of Movieman in the buff singing Karaoke whilst riding a burro at CES.
Tiny update ...
Leak Testing in progress (no cable management or loop refining done yet):
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...5_cKP5i-XL.jpg
looking good, love the towel
god, that just looks soooo effin' nice
The blue theme is actually really nice. Love the towel too.
Looking good Shazza!
You did an amazing job on that PSU; bravo!
Keep up the great work! :)
Thanks guys. I threw this pic up, cause I thought maybe you needed to see real world stuff - not just the perfection we've seen this week from Charles :). Not 100% happy with my PSU mod ... some of the wires coming from the HX620 PSU were all squirrely, but I don't want to change them out til I see if it actually powers up the system. It seems fine on the PSU tester, but ya never know.
Anyhoo ... another big THANKS to BoxGod/aka Geno for the Typhoon III. It's quite a fun little reservoir/pump top. I had a hell of a time figuring out how to bleed it, til I realized I could just pull it out from under the mobo tray, flip it towards me and open the bleed port (I'm not blonde, but perhaps I should be). Burnt the heck out of my fingers trying to get the 7/16" tubing on 1/2" DD fatboy barbs. I do want all you compression fitting haters to take notice that there is not a single BP fitting in this build (well, other than the stop plugs). More to come tomorrow ... now it's :banana::banana::banana:tail time in the pool (best way to cope with the heat in the desert  )
whats the benefit to the small tubing on large fatboys ?
The PSU wiring looks good in my opinion.... Mine looks like a rat's nest compared to how you've done it on your torture rack.
How's the finally orientation of the TIII going to look?
Looks pretty awesome! Where can I get me a shazza hat and safety glasses?
Just to get a tighter seal ... minimizes the need for clamps, altho I will end up with something on there for the long haul.
Thanks, jpm. The PSU wiring looks better than before, but still need to see if I can tidy it up. I really like the blue MDPC-X sleeving (THANKS again, Nils) - unfortunately, the Torture Rack is not the best place to show it nicely.
Not sure how the TIII will finally end up. Just using one inlet and outlet now, would like to do two, but don't want to have to cross tubing. A quick power up shows identical temps to what I had before with the XSPC/MCP 355. The Typhoon III is very flexible wrt filling/bleeding/draining, and I like the way it holds the D5 pump.
Thanks, rootz0r. I'm taking orders for the safety gear ;) My husband is still laughing at my response to my first dremel experience. I turn it on, cautiously put dremel to metal and then "OH Sh*%:shocked::shock: there's sparks !!!???#@&^%!!!" Needless to say, I haven't spent much time around Power Tools
(And, resting easier now knowing I have not, at least not YET, managed to kill any innocent hardware in the PSU modding adventure).
Also ... got word today that my replacement 4870x2 is on it's way  That was a nice surprise, as I thought I'd have to write off a $500 GPU (albeit $300 at today's prices).
haha, sparks are fun huh?
looking at that picture brings 'blue kiss' to mind... your tubes kinda look like an outline of pursed lips...
good stuff shazza
haha. love the personal attack.
but no, it's just that i draw and that's how an outline starts out.
shaza ... that towel very cute! Tiger! Gonna to get a bench table too ... Great job!
oh shazza i should tell you this.
The HD series video card has a built in sound card for its hdmi out.
In order to use it, you need to activate it windows and select HDMI OUT instead of speaker out.
A lot of people dont know the HD series has a built in realtek sound card so not a lot of people will use it.
But on a HTPC its perfect.
Loving the blue Shazza, looks great.
Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I have not abandoned my project ... just off vacationing two weeks in Maine. I'm having withdrawls, as I want to get this project done and on to the next one! Hoping to make progress next week.
***********WARNING********** OFF TOPIC PICS coming - well, they have to do with water and it is very cool (temperature-wise), but nothing to do with computers. Just for fun ...

Why is it that I always feel like a new build when I look at your photos Shazza!
It's a beaut though, your talent with pcs and photography continue to amaze me :)
One day I shall be at your level of skill. ( Hopefully ) ;)
