so everything is just fine now..but i haven't that many experiences in memory tweaking and want to know if there is anything i can improve on the subtimings?!

The AX78 is not a memory tweakable board sad to say. You could try to make it run 4 4 4 12 2t 1000MHz, that would be nice ;) Don't know what voltage your ram is specified for though.
Maybe drop the cpu Multi to 10, HT multi to 3,and see how high it will go,you cpu is at least good until 3000MHZ (10x300 HTT) test stability as you go.That CFX3200 of yours can do 370+ on the HTT, with the right ram/timings
i swapped the DFi for the Abit because the DFi wasn't able to handle my 4GB GSkill PC 8000 Ram with good clocks. So currently i have the Abit and i love it so far.
My ram plays really nice on this board. DDR800 @ 1100+ cas 4 aint to shabby~!

Nice Jethro, is that stable, and what voltage did you apply?
very nice OC,
but it's crazy that Everest reads RX790 Chipset, because mine shows AMD770... :/ maybe an older version...
New BIOS out; v.13 official. Get it here.
Note that one user @ abit points out his 9850BE for some strange reason gets 1.54v after updating to this BIOS. Why, I have no idea. I believe he reported the problem to abit.Quote:

2. For more detail, please visit:
http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/download/guide.php
3. After BIOS updated, pull off the power cord and then clear the CMOS data
via jumper before restarting system please.
================================================== ==========================
Aside from that, some users will be happy to know there is now a Ganged/Unganged setting in there. Haven't verified that myself, just what I've heard. I'm flashing to it shortly.
EDIT - I'm happy to report it does allow Unganged mode and, more importantly to early phenom adopters, it allows you to choose whether to use the TLB fix or not!
Thanks for the heads up Hokie! Installed and running fine! AOD works perfectly still etc. I'll try pushin it later! Thanks for the Link.
No problem, glad to help. On a related note, if you're into F@H, I enabled the TLB Cache (disabled by default) and am getting just under 300ppd more with the OC in my sig folding project 2665. Yay!
EDIT - One last addition according to a user @ abit (I don't have a PCIe 2.0 card, so this one's beyond me) is...well, I'll let him say it himself:

hi hokiealumnus, i still can't see the option even with the latest bios. any idea how to sort this issue out? without this feature i reckon it's kinda hard for b2 phenoms (with locked multi) to achieve high clocks (thou most of them are not good clocker). :(
another thing is why Abit doesn't allow undervolt on AX78? It would be good if such feature is allowed to reduce some temp on the chip as well as pwm. ;)
other than these, the board has been great.
Hmm..that's very strange. It's always been there on mine. Start by disabling Cool N' Quiet if you haven't already (Advanced BIOS Features / CPU Feature). See if that enables your CPU multiplier. Then save & exit. See if you can then access the HT multi. Weird that it would be on mine but not yours.
Re: Under-volting - with all of their recent boards, abit hasn't done any under-volting. They set the VID as the lowest selectable Vcore. Some people would like to under-volt, but we're overclockers, so that's not bad news...there's nowhere to go but up!
if you want to undervolt, use rm clock to move the vid down once in windows.
works fine
Hi again folks. Update on the 9850 Vcore issue - it's fixed by clearing CMOS, going into BIOS and selecting "Load Optimized Defaults"! The user hadn't done that previously and tech support suggested that. So, to summarize, BIOS v.13 is good for 9850BE's as well. :)
thought i would post this before Hokie did :D sry hokie,
Abit have updated there CPU compat list for there mobo's, interesting reading for the AX78, i am so glad i got one of these early, appaerantly they have went up $25 dollars on new egg,

Anyone running Crossfire on these boards? If so what kind of results are you getting?
i think i have heard of one guy doing it, but i dont think anyone wants to, or needs to do it.
there are just far too many single/dual gpus that re up to the mark for the money,
myself for example, i have a 9600GT graphics card, but im going to upgrade, now i would normally stick another 9600GT in there (on sli board) as they scale well.
or for the AX78 i will get a 4870x2 for that, why mess around with crossfire when i can have dual gpu's on a single card?
you know what i mean,, gone are the days of the only upgrade on a 8800gt was another for sli :D,
but i would be very interested on the results, especialy after reading anantechs review on the need for x16 slots for sli or crossfire, they seemed to think it wasnt needed, and that 1 x 16 and 1 x 4 would not be a problem for most games in sli.
when i have two cards i will try it, im gagging to know, i bet the result doesnt suprise me
I will let you all know on the weekend. just got my board and my CPu should be here in the next few days 9850BE, i already have 2 x 4850,s so i shall keep you posted.
SmaKKed, i know you will be busy gettin it on with the new rig, but some crossfire and single slot results would be great, it would let us see if they scale well on the ax78
busy busy, tell me about it, ive got three kids on summer holiday at the moment, they are running me ragged
i sit at the comp at night to check emails and im falling asleep, while i can hear them planning and laughing about they will drag me into tommorow
help !!
Well no CPU today :banana::banana::banana:ed Australia post they dont even know where it is. SO i have to wait till next week :(
Im stuck on my Trusty k650 AMD 512 meg of ram for now. lol
I'm getting a 9950 next week DOH! Anyone think thats a bad idea with this board? Been awhile since ive smelled burning mosfets! :D
since the board is already officially supports 9950, i assume it's safe to pair the chip with. but for sure the overclock will be bottleneked by the board. :)
i'm cross-firing a pair of 3850 on it, but so far i'm more concern bout my phenom oc. once i'm settled down with the cpu oc, i'll start the graphic oc. it's useless to test the how well is the graphic if ones don't have a good cpu (overclocked). :p:
Well im up and going with a 5000+ Cpu for now but one of my 4850 is dead no power i get no lights at all , tried it on a heap of other systems and no go, so we wait a little longer for X fire. But this board is pretty nice for the price $80 Australian. im impressed....Oh and its good to be back on AMD aswell :)
Picked up a 9600 to play around with instead, couldnt resist gettin one for around 100buxafter instant rebate and ram combo(girlfriends puter). Cheap enough that i can push it really hard and not cry if i fry it woot:up: I plan to throw the volts at it since my cooling is pretty stout! If i can hit 2.7 or so id be stoked! That would be around 40% more crunching power not including the improved IPC etc over my current 6000+. I'll explore the boards phenom clocking potential fully and post my findings.
Ok so ive just gone back to amd.

faster? look at the minimum fps, thats the important numbers, but im impressed how well amd perform.
Yeah i know the lower FPS is slower but average is faster??
On this board can anyone get there GPU to run in PCIE 2.0 ?
Ive tried all sorts of combos and it wont kick in
9600 black edition arrives tomorrow WOOT. Will post some prelim results tomorrow night. Shouldnt be much trouble to find the initial frequency ceiling being an black edition. Its not a 9950 but maxing out an unlocked 2.3 will be more rewarding anyway :) W/O reading back thru this entire thread does anyone know offhand what kind of HTT i should might shoot for with this board?
Off topic : Hokie arent you from Raleigh NC?
your in luck kiddo
i was up against the same problem for months but i finaly worked it out, with about a 95% success rate,
original post: http://forum.uabit.com/showpost.php?...58&postcount=1
ok guys i truly think i have worked this out, i may be wrong but i have tested this now with around 20 - 30 reboots and starts, and this rig is loading and takes ages to fully reboot, so hasnt been a joy, to say the least, anyways heres my findings, and solution.
i may have a couple of directions to certain parts of bios wrong (doing it from memory), but will edit the post, if any are found to be in the wrong place.
ok, start computer (cold boot) and go into bios (press delete)
once there got to: Advanced Chipset settings> PCIe config
(assuming you have your card in the top slot)
in there got to each slots settings,
the first one: (PCIe x1 leave alone, this is used for your marvel ukon Ethernet chip)
Second one PCIeX16 (your cards slot) hit enter, and you will have some options, go into 'high Speed gen 2 mode' and and change it from 'disabled' to 'auto' and also change the transfer rate from auto to x16
third one PCIeX16: same as above but only change the 'high speed gen2 mode' from 'disabled' to 'auto' (this is the only option you will have in an empty slot)
fourth one: is there a forth one? anyways leave it, its not important
save the settings (F10 + exit) and the machine will reboot.
here comes the magic bit
when you enter windows check the 'status' of PCIe v1.0 or v2.0, with GPU-Z, it should say that it is set to PCIe 16 @ 16, ok, where is my v2.0?
now shut down computer, and leave to simmer for 20 minutes at gas mark 3 (sry wrong thread )
yeah shut it down, no restart !!!! and leave a few seconds, then hit your pwer button and boot into windows, have a look at GPU-Z and you should have PCIe v2.0 X16@PCIe v2.0 X16.
i think it must have been with the 'switching' between 2 standards that required the power down before the switch itself, i dunno. but it works for me
can you guys that are having this problem confirm the 'solution'?
we will see,
well i have rebooted a few times now and look , http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/mxxnv/ wahey !!!!
and slot 2 on the ax78 is resigned to x4 when in crossfire, but at PCIe v2.0 you can double that, so its really running @ x8 v1.0, seems crossfire might be a viable option here
I think mine topped out somewhere between 245-250 range dropping the HT multi down to 8x and giving the CPU NB Ref Voltage +.10. I'm not positive though and don't really recall because it's been a while since I've had time to play with this build. It's just what my scattered brain seems to think it remembers.
Yep, sure am! Are you as well?
Ty for the infos Hokie, good range to start in! Yes i am from Raleigh! I have a woodshop downtown :) I build fine furniture and soon some really nice PC cases via my CNC! We should hook up and geek out sometime!
for those who is interested to know cross-fire result on this board :)
http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/6...ockxoc4.th.jpg
test was ran on:
- vista ultimate (32-bit)
- cards on stock speed
- overcloked cpu & ram
looks pretty good. single card is arround 10K im guessing? 14K looks to be about mid-high field score, going by the ocuk leaderboard for this sort of setup :)
im just trying to find courage to put my "burned" 3870 in pins 3&4 got shorted and burned in a water leak. ive cleaned that up and theres no apparent shorting now (dmm) but i dont wanna kill another AX78....
Quad damage installed! So far 2.65ish at default volts... can use CMD 1 with rams which is cool! Can get to windows @ 2.8 but not stable yet! Just doesnt seem to like volts at all! My HTT clocking is dismal, super flakey indeed. Wouldnt even do over 202 initially but now im at 218 and climbing.. Board definately not comfortable with phenom clocking, definately fun to play with tho :) 15 degree celsius idle temps are insane!!
using soundood's method, above, and with cpu/ram/gfx all at stock (12*266 fsb) - ~12500 3d marks (vs 11000 overclocked single card). both cards runing pcie 2.
the board certainly can do xfire.
my AX78 results with x2 6000+ F3 by regular water cooling.

Very nice, can i ask what bios your running? im guessing .13 - high v-core for an x2, how are you cooling the fets?
It's BIOS v.13 (build date 5/23/08). Great clocks there, especially 600Mhz on the memory. Very nicely done!
very enjoyable thread from a fellow AX78 owner , this MB board love's the AMD 6400+ chips , I'm glad to see your having a good time with this sleeper board Venom- , the AMD 5000+ black edition does real well with the AX78 also , nice work Venom-Crusher !!!!
Hello all i just got AX78 Motherboard and X2 5400+ Brisbane Black

Ty all i guess no one knows
it shouldn't be hard.
what have you tried & what have you achieved?
i got the muti @ 16x200 = 3.2 and i have to put CPU volts to 1.37 from 1.32
thats all i have touched cause i dont know nothing about the Blackies as this is my 1st one , i know i can go higher cause i did get this to a 3.3 but wasnt stable and that when i had the CPU Volts up to 1.45
Thanks
Roger
what are you using for CPU cooling & which exact OCZ DDR2 800?
i will post the links to each item

ok instead of starting a new thread i was wondering something i was trying to flash the bios on my ax78 board and the flash went wrong and this looks like an onboard chip how can i get this board running again
Thanks Roger
no it isnt matey so all is cool, you just have to put up with a dead board for a couple of days/weeks.
you will need to head over and get yourself another bios chip from abit, it will come with bios v13 allready on there, heres the link,
http://www.uabit.com/WebStore/produc...5ff83343e273b1
once you get it, be careful when removing the other chip, stick this one in/boot/load optimized defaults and save, then go back into bios and set ram voltage (if needed)
the good thing here is that once you put the new chip in and boot, you could remove the new chip and stick the old one in while in windows and try and 'hotflash' it to make it good again.
just dont try it under windows vista, seems to work in XP ok though, i have tried it and its fine
hope this helps,
that reminds me i need to head over and see the wolves

exactly, the process is known as 'hot flashing' , you would use the new chip to boot the board into windows, once in windows, swap the good chip for the bad chip, then flash the old chip from windows, if there is no pysical damage to the chip then it should flash ok,
or you could judt order two bios chips at the same tim, keeps one safe incase of bios flash again.
the easiest way i have found to flash bios is to use USB drive that emulates a floppy, info to do this is on the abit site, under beta bios, found here
http://forum.uabit.com/showthread.php?t=121953
Ok i will order two of them to be safe and i will let you know how it goes, again tyvm for the info , like i said b4 this is one hell of a learning error and almost cost me a good board , also i do have a USB DataTraveler
http://on-disk.com/product_info.php/products_id/562
Is this good, i will never touch another bios again lol
you just were unlucky roger, thats all.
what i would say is that whenever you think of flashing a bios go to the board makers website to see tips for flashing, and check the forums there as well, cause this problem has happened before and is well documented with a warning not to do it from windows.
as for the flash drive, its fine, just follow the instructions on the abit website, it will be fine, i have flashed this board around 20 times now, not a problem.
you will have to upgrade the bios at some point, so please dont be put off with your current situation, what is important is that you learn the lesson (we all do) and think yourself lucky that your board ahs a socketed bios, more reason to make sure that all boards you buy have this, or dual bios options
let me now how it goes, and any probs give me a PM, im in here most nights
ok so all i have to do is just take out the old chip and put the new chip in and boot the PC?
pretty much yeah, getting the old chip out can be a bit of hassle, they are seated very tightly in the AX78, you can buy a tool for it, or use some needle nose pliers (small)
but yeah you pull it out, stick the other one in and away you go, what i do as a mater of habit is get a permanent marker, and mark one corner of chip, to the same corner of chip socket, then you are sure of the correct orientation of the chip when putting it back in.
ohhh so it can go in more then oneway , would that be a bad thing?
I just got a brand new one of these for an RMA replacement for another board. I have a x2 6400 be I can throw in it, what ram do you guys see as being the best for getting the most out of the board? Excited to have an AMD board that will clock well again, and look forward to seeing what I can get out of it.
I am also gonna get a 4870 to put in it as well. This thread has me looking forward to it. ;)
