Here are numbers from my prelim testing (usually very close to final results):
Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 @ 7V:
CFM/dBA: 48.7/27.3
Yate Loon SM @ 12V:
CFM/dBA: 58.5/32.9
Subjectively: the Sharkoon beats the pants off the Yate SM and SH. The SM and SH are not as impressive as the SL...
Does the noise 'quality' of the Sharkoon 2000 hold up well with undervolting? I ended up getting the 1000 due to availability, but I'm kinda wishing I'd been patient and waited on the 2000 now. The 1000 is great, but since I basically can't hear it at all @ 12v, it seems like there's some room to go faster.

Vapor, i would like to know the noise level and cfm of the D12SH-12s @ 12V. if the D12SM-12s are 32dB i'm now worried.

Thanks Vapor. That is not what I was expecting from the Yate Loon SM so it changes my thought processes. Last request... Could I get the numbers for the Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 @ 12V? Thank you for spending the time to research this topic in such an in-depth manner. It sheds a lot of light on which fans are truly the best and benefits a multitude of people.
Keep in mind that everyone (potentially) measures dBA differently, which is why (I assume) Vapor listed the 'adjusted DB' charts... he found a fan that was rated close to how he was measuring and adjusted all the others accordingly (again, I'm guessing on the process, so it may be more or less involved than that).Quote:

This round I'm measuring at 10cm....last round was 12cm. I get very, very different numbers than what I'm showing.
What I show are 'adjusted dB'...essentially I take the numbers from a few fans I trust (Yate Loon SL, Deltas) and get a y = M*x + B equation to adjust them down to 1M numbers that we're all used to.
Last round, they were spot on. This round, I've only tweaked the equation slightly....it's SL-justified, but I'm thinking it's too tight (meaning lows are too high and highs get lowered). Haven't tested the Deltas yet....
Either way, since it's a simple Mx + B form, where M is less than 1 and B is negative, for adjusting....if one fan is respectively louder than another, it'll stay that way no matter what the adjustment is.
Honestly, I don't think the adjusted dB numbers I've been showing are final, but their source numbers will not be changing.
EDIT: okay, I think I just finalized my adjustment equation....not a big change really, but a better fit now at all data points.
Vapor , I am gonna use 6 fans for my case ( Cm stacker 830) , which shall i pick for silent but enough airflow for a clocked system , 6 x Sharkoon Golf or 6 x yates, eitherway 1) connect them by molex, 2 with a fancontroller?
If you get the Sharkoon's, you're going to want to get a fan controller. At around 7V, they're better performers than Yates at 12V, and they have the overhead to 12V if you ever need more cooling. Six of them at 12V would be too loud, IMO.
BUT, 6xSharkoon2000 + Fan controller costs a lot more than Yate Loon SLs....depends how much you have left in your build budget.
hehe yea they cost a fair bit more then the yates lets say 1.5x, but I think it might still fit my budget, if so which fancontroller shall I get for it, there arent much around here in the Netherlands, only brands like Zalman/Scyth/
f.e: Sunbeam Chromatic Windmill /ZM-MFC1(6 fans( which I already got for references, but if this 1 is good enough, will spare me some money:)/ ZM-MFC2(4 fans)/Scythe Kamameter( 4 fans)/Zalman ZM-MFC1 Plus ( 6 fans , but not really available yet).

The 4412FGML undervolts well...or at least mine does. There's a tad more subtle motor noise than the Sharkoon under 7-8V, but it's still better than what low speed fans can pull off. Do note that it doesn't get to ambient noise levels at any voltage (IIRC....it may at minimum running voltage, I forget), so there is a slight motor noise present...but considering the airflow and the overall noise, it's not bad.
BUT, if others have had problems....then....well, maybe there is an issue overall.

ALSO: Just got the FM123, Sharkoon 1000, and a Coolink SWiF-1202, but have only briefly tested the FM123....and I've got to say it is the most positional fan I've ever heard.....pointing down, it makes this HORRIBLE click (even just free-spinning it with your hand), pointing sideways, it's got a normal tone, and pointing up it makes a high-pitched noise. It also MUST be run on the included rheobus :rolleyes: (the rheobus is GREATLY improved over the FM121/122's though....up to three heads can be put on one backplate and it's all black, and has an off position....and a better resistor).
That said, it's 97CFM* and 120x120x25....definitely a better option than the overspecced FM121. (*97CFM is prelim...the fan was exhibiting a form of break-in I've seen on Yates as well...so that will probably go up 102 if I had to guess).
Next week I'll also be getting an FN122....really excited for that one.

This is a valued resource that many of us over at OverClock.net are gleaning our data from--I have to say we always turn to XS for the real reviews and findings from hard data.
Can I ask you Vapor in a nutshell what is your opinion of the SilenX Ixtrema 90 CFM fans and Silenx 120mm fans in general? I have a personal interest in this as I was planning to vend these fans on my site and really need to hear the real deal from the Expert in these matters. I was thinking these fans provide the best balance of CFM to DBA for a case fan--but I could be wrong....

I think that it is already mentioned that the SilenX are crap, the real performance isnt on pair with what it claimed.( CFM wise)
Having personally used the 120mm 47cfm 11db (lol) fan, I can say they're rubbish, well, certainly that model is.
Is barely pushes any air, and you can hear it running no problem.
They're overpriced and rubbish.
I replaced mine with an Akasa Amber fan I had lying around, which wasnt much louder, but pushed FAR more air.

Acording to Bios some of the fans spin faster or slower than spec. One particular Blue LED runs at 1500 rpm in BIOS another one runs at 1290RPM the 90 CFM fans I have tested on m rigs all seem to run at or very close to 1400 rpm in BIOS.

The actual fan says D14SM-12 though...
SPCR did include a Silenx in their last 120mm fan roundup. I'm not sure if that gives you the kind of info you're looking for.

Sorry if this has been asked before.. I just haven't found it. What is your fan controller of choice? Can each channel of the fan controller handle.. say... three high spinning 38mm fans.. aka 110 cfm @ 12V or something ridiculous like that ?

I tolerate the Sunbeam and respect the BigNG, but am starting to lean away from even those.
The Sunbeam and Lian Li variants have been what I use in my builds because they can handle a one amp load without drooping too much (well...lowest resistance setting is below 11V at 1A actually, still stronger than the rest) and because they do have an accurate 7V light change. I generally hate rheobuses because you never know what voltage you're at...the Sunbeam's light is too bright, but that's easy to fix. The Sunbeams do have a longevity problem when being stressed, in my experience, and also do suffer from noticeable droop.
Gaudy/blingy/flashy lights annoy me too....the world's best fan controller could be blingy and I wouldn't consider it. As such, I don't know much about the blingy controllers, but I can't imagine they're anywhere near strong enough to handle ~2A at 12V with no droop (what 3x110CFM fans would draw probably).
The BigNG is interesting....certainly the king of software-based controllers, but I really don't like the look (an anodized black box that can be hidden in a case more suits me), and the price is unattractive, as is the load handling for the price (20W analog :-/). Good thing about software-based controllers is you KNOW what voltage setting you're at and can even have it auto-adjust for you.
But honestly, I'm really starting to like switch-based controllers....or at least the idea of them. You can hardwire a 12V setting to handle ~250W (depends on the switch, wires, and soldering job...and eventually PSU), as well as a hardwired 7V and/or 5V setting...as well as an open-circuit setting. Problem is, none actually do this :(
That's why I plan on building my own sometime this summer....it'll have a 12V, 7V and off settings hardwired and be able to handle any load I throw at it....and it won't be blingy (nor will it be ghetto in the least).
Basically, I know nothing out there that meets your needs, but I wish I did :(

IanY, you're in luck....the LEDs on the Sunbeam are socketed LEDs and you can just pull the three pins out with your fingers or pliers.
I'll take a pic later and show you what I mean :)
BUT, it still won't handle more than one 110CFM fan per channel well (it will handle two, but at like 10.8V at most :()
Alright, I've got to vent here....
Two days ago I was doing some testing and discovered my dBA data was wayy off (every time I start a session, I retest a fan from the previous session to make sure I'm getting the exact same data). I had noticed some creep in dBA data earlier, but just went back retested the old batches along side and all was fixed. Well, this shift was large, very large.
I found out that my dB meter was sliding like a centimeter a month toward the fan and turning slightly....the suspension mounting wasn't working for long term essentially. So I redid the mounting much more securely but still isolated (from vibration, wind, and the like), and now my numbers are not comparable to anything again, so the old data is essentially useless. CFM and restriction testing is OKAY, but dBA results all have to be redone.
Next gripe: every :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing time I go to do some testing, a surprise thunderstorm rolls in and the thunder :banana::banana::banana::banana:s with my ambient in a massive way. :mad: God must work in the marketing or legal department for SilenX.
Next gripe: my work schedule has been just weird....the lady who does the scheduling doesn't have any courtesy for the summer part-timers (4 of us)....but this coming week's schedule (the weirdest yet actually), has blocks of time where I can get stuff done. I really want to knock out as many fans as I can this week.
Some good news though: the person I've been spending most of my time with is in Cape Cod for the week and some of next week too....so with her out of town, I'll have lots of solid time to spend with my fans :)

I have ~12 NMB-MAT fans here....mostly Panaflo and some Scythe. Only the 1100RPM Scythe ever gets 'quiet'....and none really undervolt well.
The H1BX/H1As at 7V push ~60CFM at 36dBA. So yes, it does get quiet enough, but no, it's nowhere near the better fans out there at the same amount of noise.
(your ebmpapsts do 74.3CFM at 35.3dBA, the Sharkoon 2000 does 74.2/34.8, the San Ace 1011 does 80/35.4 on the new testbed (louder adjusted CFM results than the first one), and the Scythe S-Flex F does 60.5CFM at 33.4 on the new testbed.....these are all 12V except the San Ace, which is at 8V)

the mesh of the tj09 is no match for the minebea. they are thick blades seems like better plastic then all my other fans. little hum of the silent ic is all you hear the rest is just air moving.

Man, you have no idea how long I have been looking for a fan to overcome the mesh of the TJ09. All my current 1600rpm offerings barely have any air feeling when I put my hand over top of the mesh. I really need something that will cut through this to help eliminate the heat in my case effectively with the two top blow holes. I also want a more powerful fan for the internal center part of the case as the stock fan is far too weak and my video card is heating up like a hooker in hell.
Now I need to find a place that sells these, especially to Canada where I never seem to have any luck finding decent fans.
yeah weird Ncix only has the slowest nmb minebea. i got mine from performance-pcs.com they are the cheapest i found. if they ship to singapore i don't see why they won't ship to Canada.

holy crap, that seems like a Delta killer. Running at over 18w, you wouldn't be able to power this from any commercially available controller and most certainly not a mobo header. You would need to run this straight from an adapter to a molex. Even the Sunbeam Rehobus can only stand up to 18w max per channel.

I give up on Silverstone fans. Really.
1) FM121 (so lauded by many) just fails to perform well....and is deceitfully and horribly overrated.
2) FM122 performs even worse, makes annoying noises, eats up a lot of power....oh, and it's deceitfully overrated as well.
3) FN121 has annoying wiring (double molex) but is otherwise pretty good....keeps up with a fake Yate Loon SL at least. :rolleyes:
4) FM123 makes the FM122/121 seem like good fans....has the new title as "most annoying". Really, I'd rather have a 220CFM Delta running than one of those POS.
5) FN122 SHOULD have been good, I turned it on, it was really quite and pleasing to listen to, no annoying noises. Then I try my CFM tester: 26CFM at 12V!!!!! Been running for a few hours now and it's up to 29CFM at 12V :rolleyes:

Hi everyone, Im a new guy, this is probably my first post. Ive been reading some forums here on fans, and processors and the like, and ive been very impressed with the amount of hard data there is. (Ive been on Overclock.net for a long time, and like cyberdruid said, there are a lot of opinions, and no hard data. Or little, anyway)
I have a watercooling setup with a 1977 bonneville dual heatercore, which pulls air up from the bottom of my case. I was looking at the graphs, and it looks like the Sharkoon Golf ball fans are my best bet. I have good hearing, so Im looking for a fan as silent as possible, which pushes (or pulls) the most air through a radiator. Im using TT-1225 fans, (A1225M12S) and they're louder than I want. Would the Golf ball fans be recommended for this sort of situation? I have a Aerogate II fan controller, so I can always drop RPM if I need to to make it silent. Any fan suggestions would be welcome! Seems like none of the 3 fans i tested will be any good for a heatsink, initially used it to cool my hdd's w a fan filter behind but doesnt seem to push any air and my hdd temps shot up. Positioned like the pix below
And using the ghetto method ie my hand being abt 8-10 inches away @ 12v, Aerocool pushes the most, followed closely by Evercool and lastly the YL, but i wouldnt recommend any of these fans for anything other than pushing free air with no obstructions whatsoever eg heatsink fins. So now im thinking IFX-14 will fit a 140mm fan but what fan ? :shrug:

I'm in the same boat as 0rion. I am also searching for the best fans to use with a radiator. I wouldn't mind High-rpm as long as I can turn it down so that I can sleep at night (at least to the db level of the low setting on a tri-cool antec 120 fan. Yes, its reared its ugly head again).
I just got some arctic cooling fans and I am going to test them in a minute. I must first turn off this computer b/c it sounds like a hurricane. They seem loud to me, especially over a radiator. Anyone else use them on rads and have turbulence problems? And can anyone recommend a good fan to use on a Rad (w/ or w/o) a rheostat that is quiet enough to sleep w/ (like the low setting on an antec tri-cool 120mm, DUN DUN DUN...) but put out enough air if I really want to do some major cooling?

The tricool on medium setting seems to be about the same noise level as the AF12 fan with on 12v going through the m. OF course, we need some hard data to back this up.
I hope this sorta helps someone out there. Of course, again, Vapor is the guy who can validate this.

I would trust any of Petra's Yate Loons or Scythe S-Flexes or the Zalman FM3 (or w/e it's called) or any Sanyo Denki....basically, my round 2 has a bunch of 'winners' that beat or tie my best round 1 fans.

I'd avoid Sunon....I've never had a fan of theirs that was quiet at any setting. Both the 38mm and 25mm versions sold at places like PTS and PPCs have this 'issue.' Cathar has noted the same thing. Frankly, I don't believe silence/quiet is any sort of priority of theirs. They're quality fans, but they're just never quiet at any voltage.Quote:

Yes, it's a very good fan. Mine has a really nice sweetspot at 1800RPM (12V) where it makes almost no extra noise over 1600RPM (which is also very quiet for the airflow, definitely among the best) but pushes a good 10-15% more air. Above ~6V it's a 'very good' to 'excellent' fan but down to 5V and below I'd only rate it as 'good.' Definitely a good fan to recommend. Comes with good rubber screws too.Quote:

I currently have a pair of the Sanyo 1011 in a Lian Li 7A Plus II pushing/pulling through a ThermoChill PA 160. I am using a (gasp) Silverstone fan controller which keeps them running at very low speed..at lowest the fans have distinctive click. Slightly above low the fans are very quiet...much less obnoxious than many I have tried.
I like having the option of turning them all the way up...but 99% of the time they run as slowly as possible.
Vapor: I have a question about Panaflo 86.5 used push pull for a rad set up (the Monolith standalone I am building) I will go through your latest works again and see if I can find your comments on these. At $6 each they are certainly attractive price wise.
I understand the S-Flex will do just fine especially when compared to the stock fan. What I wanted to know is how the cheaper Zalman fan compares since it has now been mentioned by Vapor and I know he has tested both. Without data being released on both from him I can only go by his opinion after testing the two. I was going to get the S-Flex hands down however, at $5 cheaper and 200rpm more the Zalman may now be a wise choice if I hear it as so from Vapor after his testing is complete.Quote:

I plan on getting this heatsink with my upcoming build and was going to put my two H1A in this position but may get the San Ace instead if I can use them on the heatsink without issues while still maintaining one for my rear exhaust.
Not much mention of the Panaflo L1A...68cfm at 30db is pretty impressive if their ratings are accurate. I've had one on my CPU for a couple of years now and when I unplug my case fans, its near silence. The thing is though it doesn't seem to move much air despite its 68cfm rating.
I'm looking for something that can move more air. Seems the Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 may be the way to go. That with some Zalman ZM-F3 case fans would make a good setup. Anyone disagree?
These are all "case fans" but I don't see why that makes a difference. What determines its labeling as a case fan or heatsink fan anyway? Directional vs spread out airflow?

it mentions the operating range being from 10.2v to 13.8v. Can this not be turned down to still run at 7v? Will it even properly start up if set to 7v on my Sunbeam Rheobus during system power up?
Well I have 1 Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 120mm and 2 Zalman ZM-F3 120mm fans on the way from Performance PCs. These will be going in a build for my family.
1x Zalman ZM-F3 Intake
1x Zalman ZM-F3 Exhaust
1x Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 for the Thermalright SI-128
I am hoping the Zalmans beat out the stock case fans that came with the NZXT Apollo (which do seem decent) and the Panaflo L1A that I have on the CPU now. If so the stock fans will be delegated to RAM cooling.
If I like what I find I will be getting more of the Zalmans for my own build with the NZXT Zero.
On my system I have the Enzotech Ultra-X going in to handle an E6850. The specs of this fan seem close to the Sharkoon:

I've got a Delta 120x38mm 2000rpm model as the exhaust fan on my P182, it's rated for 34db though that seems overrated. Closer to 31-32db, I think. No sort of nasty buzz or hum from it, just the smooth sound of airflow.
As a 38mm fan, it has higher static pressure, which is exactly what you need in a heatsink with tightly-packed fins.
For those interested, it's a Delta EFB1212LE. I picked mine up from PPCs, although sidewindercomputers has it cheaper.
Yeah if the Delta ends up being too loud I'll replace it with a Silent Eagle.
I'm using a Sunon as the pull for the Ultra-120 X I'm using at the moment. Running the 12V rail at 13V. Dont know what you want to know, but it's not having any problems. It out performs the 1600 rpm scythe I was using. Lol, my mistake, read it as overvolting. The noise is hardly noticable. If you want loud try a 4000 rpm delta. Some people are just very sensitive to any noise. But to answer your real question, it shouldn't be any problem undervolting any fan and as the rpm's drop so would the noiseQuote:

On my new project I will be using a Mean Well PSU so getting sweet volts will be no longer be an issue--and over-volting is a great option for Xtreme cooling :up:
Just hoping the Sonex lined enclosure eliminates/dampens the clicking of the fans I chose. I'll be using isolation mounts too so excitation should not be an issue...
