My last one did the same thing but was not showing the extra .05 in CPU-Z so in the BIOS you have to disable it. I thing our mobo are getting confused with the e8400/e8500 cpu's. Now I have a e8500 and it shows the same thing but this time it post in CPU-Z.Quote:

so, it seems that 4ghz is more than a commonly reached speed on the e8400..
and as far as the oem/retail question goes, isn't their worth batch dependent? aren't e8500 slightly higher binned chips, meaning their performance increase is usually negligible?

My E8400 Booted up at 475 x 9 = 4.27 Ghz!! That is as high as I have tried yet, Im sure it isnt stable but I just wanted to see it boot because I havent had ANY time to tweek yet. I wonder if I could run it like this on my Ninja? hehe
Can anyone give me a Vcore point to measure from on my mobo? I dont trust the bios OR the software. I'm interested if I could give it enough voltage to stablize it without worrying too much about burning it up.
Whats is the consensus for stable? Orthos or prime? 12 hours? ? ?

everyone has a different view of stable but for me it's 24 hours of gromacs core testing
have had plenty of "stable" (orthos small fft's) clocks before and then go to fold and crash ! folding makes pageing & it's brains work not just volts and heat ;)
this may be inane, but would there be a benefit of going from 6850 to one of the 8x00 models? If so, which one? Have an IP35pro now and was thinking of changing to the IP45 instead (if that matters). . ..

I opted to lap my Q805A546 as with stock cooling even at stock speed it would idle around 45°C and top at 60°C under full load... I knew this CPU had potential as under watercooling it already did 4ghz at 1.26Volts... then I had a german buyer for it, but he pulled back in the final stages... oh boy is that guy gonna be pissed when he sees with the lapping job I dropped idle temps around 10°C and about 5-7°C under load... Hi all...again me :D...after hours of testing and bios updates i've found one stable configuration...
With the stable setting the CPU is running on auto.
Stable 17min, i stopped orthos...the question is why at multi 9x with the same settings the pc si not stable...is it because of the Vcore ?...
The Vcore at 4140 mhz is 1.392 IDLE...
Well, after a couple of bangs of the ol' head against the desk :shakes:, and waiting 3 days for 4 100CFM+ fans :( [3 are incredibly silent for the amount of air, these are the Scythe SlipStreams 120mm :up::up::up:; the other is the loud as hell Vantec Tornado 92mm :down:], I figured out a way to lower my temperatures. The Vantec fan replaced the stock fan on my CoolIT Systems FreeZone, the SlipStreams were attached to my ThermoChill 120.3 which was now taken out of the case and 4 feet away from it. Let me put it this way, Real Temp does not move from 28c while running SuperPI 32M [it used to reach 43-45c before] :D. Orthos, who used to knock my CPU around all the way up to 69c some times :shrug:, can hardly break 40c now :eek:. Now for the most amazing thing of all, since the Vantec is soooo loud, I'm not even running the FreeZone right now!!! :ROTF: I will run it later on, once I find my fan speed controller.
I just got my E8400 (batch Q808) and I'm having trouble getting the same results as some of you. Takes 1.39V (1.36V with V-Droop) to get to 3.96Ghz. I can't break 4GHz without at least 1.4V. I guess this is supposed to be an OK batch, what am I doing wrong? Oh, and I'm using OCCT for the stress testing.
I'm in the same boat kinda. My new E8400 is stable (8 hours orthos blend anyways) at 3.8 Ghz and 1.22-1.24V but I bump up to 4.05 GHz (450x9) and I cant get it stable even using pretty much 1.4V. Guess I got a dud. :shrug:Quote:

Well I have been trying to chase my own highest overclock and well i'm sure i can squeeze some more out of this chip and well to do this i have some questions for you all
1. Will other voltages effect stability? (ie: CPU PLL vlt; FSB term vlt; NB vlt) and it would be kinda nice to know what they do exactly
2. I'm 1 setting away from my boards max on those and is there any way high vlt settings on those will hurt the board or chip?
3. I did a pencil mod and there is no longer any intesive load vdroop...although there is still vdroop from BIOS to OS (BIOS 1.3625v vdroops to 1.336 in OS:() is that normal with a pencil mod or should i do a couple more swipes? or are there any special tricks or pencils that should be used?
4. STRAPS i've read about them and i was wondering if they could be coming into play here...I have a P5K and i have tried settings with 8 8.5 and 9 multis but they all seem to be unstable a my next overclocking step...as well i read some where that the PCI freq can also effect stability i have it at 100 but i read people saying setting it at 101 or 102 might give something extra to the chip?

The vdroop mod is what takes my MHz 'lil higher. For same Mhz w/o the mod, I'd probably have to set 1.406v in BIOS, and live with idle vcore @ 1.36-1.37...if I was "equally bold" with my mod, I could go for the magic 4GHz...but then I'd be just at/above Intel max semi-safe volt recommendation - vdroop mod is too easy !
When I buy faster GPU than 8800GTS 512MB, bye bye recommendations :D

just got round to setting up a e8500 on a friends pc
IDLE temps are 42oC @ 1.32v @ 4ghz.
LOAD "dual prime" is 60oC
this seem ok on Tinuq tower :confused:
It all depends, some CPUs require a hell of a lot of voltage after a certain point, rendering that extra OC not worth it sometimes. In my case I can do 4Ghz at 1.20v, but for 4.25Ghz I needed to bump the voltage up to 1.30v; so you see a mere 200Mhz OC took .10v, meanwhile the original 840Mhz OC only took .0125v from the VID. Now, whether my CPU can run its rated speed with lower voltage than the VID, I do not know nor care about so I calculate the required voltage from my OC original OC as that.Quote:

Cpu voltage should be raised to 1.3v and Ram voltage to 2.1v for testing. All other bios settings should be ok on AUTO.
Your system should be able to run comfortably at 4.0 GHz with the maximum cpu voltage 1.3625v or less.

Added mate, thx, dunno if I added this but my lapped Q805A546 rocks now 4ghz 8 x 500 at 1.216 Vcore :) I just had to drop PLL to 1.52 and FSB Term to 1.22 and it would allow me to drop Vcore too...

@ LEEGHOOFD...i use u're settings that you say (x9 425FSB), i use the next setting for x9 425FSB :
Dram 850mhz 4-4-4-12 Voltage 2.1 (Corsair XMS2 DHX)
Vcore 1.42 BIOS
NB 1.4
With this setting the system is stable, i run fast orthos for 2,3 minutes with SPI 32 at the same time..Vcore load is 1.368.
I tryed 4GHZ with this setting, the Vcore is insane i think...

I have a question, at a good batch that can do 4GHZ unde load with 1.25/1.3 what Vcore you need to set in bios ?

I tryed the same settings at x8 with 500FSB and it worked...all the time i've have the impresion that my ram is not good...but the ram goes like hell...i can run 890 / 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1/2.2 voltage...the problem was the Vcore...this CPU whats more and more voltage...
Mmmm so3o4nu try to lower the vcore in small steps... if you can run 8 x 500 with the same Vcore setting then at 9 x 450 it would prolly needs a tiny bit less... and try small FFT's for CPU test... my rig is stable with small and Blend... but sometimes caps out at large FFT's... yet it is folding all the time, gamed upon , benched upon and it's rock stable there...
What PLL and FSB Term do you use ?

eye keep getting higher clocks for less vtt & pll also but still at the same or higher cpu volts ..up to 4.5 cpu speed ( want to see 4.8 or better ) now & stable to me doing folding and surfing and all but ya larg fft are kinda funny some times go for hours & sometimes not :shrug: good enough for me tho :D
eye tried 2 817 and thay were terrible.. hard to hit 3.8 at 1.368 v if eye rembember right 814 much better :up: but eye would def. keep that 3110:yepp:Quote:

Good luck with your Q814. I also had one and was not so good, 1.35v to boot at 4Ghz on P5K-E with vdrop mod, only SPi 1MB stable.Quote:
