So question for everyone. I know you guys aren't fans on eVGA Motherboards.. more so the 7 series. but I have a chance tonight to get the eVGA, or XFX 790i SLI, not the FTW, or the ULTRA.. but the 790i SLI for $99.00 and then it has a mail in rebate. so it will end up being like $50 dollars or so, but for now that's $99 dollars for a 790i. thats pretty damn sweet.
So how much better would the 790i SLI be over my current 750i FTW. other than the TRI-SLI that I don't care for. what would I benifit. I'd have to get DDR3 Ram. would it overclock my Q9650 farther than my 750i can? although I've not even found it's limit yet on this board. I still need to do that also. lol.
Just thought I'd ask everyone's opinion there. as thats a GREAT deal for that board. it's still a good board isn't it.
I wouldn't use an nvidia board if they paid me $50....
I HAVE read all posts and I can tell you LOVE Nvidia.
I was the same (still am for GPU's) but for a long time now Nvidia are crap for Mobo Chipsets because they sat on their hands after very good NF2/3/4, NF5 was just ok and NF6 was a total POS and 780 is a total POS and the 790 is again just ok.
You do not need DDR3 bandwidth for a C2D CPU, total waste of time and money.
You need to put that POS of a Mobo in the bin and get a Intel P45 IMO (I have had the 680 and 780 POS's).
You have all very good parts apart from you Mobo, its a total waste and shame to fit a 45nm Quad to it, infact they do not even run that well on 780 and ain't supported on 680.
I do not understand why you defend it so much, its a POS and I at least can say I have owned both 6000 and 7(8)00 POS's.
If you got a P45 you would in about 1 weeks time after you get used to the multiple different Bios settings NEVER LOOK BACK and wonder how you can hit 500+FSB (2000QP, yes even on a 45nm Quad) with hardly any voltage increase to various Mobo Components.
TRI SLI is also stupid and a waste of time and money, you can for now game better on 1 faster GPU as SLI/Crossfire is not supported in all games, 2009 will still be about 1 very fast GPU (soon to be released).
I guess it depends on whether or not you get a good board. I had a 680i mobo and it was fantastic with my Q6600. Right I just got my Q9650 up 4.1GHz(9x456) with cpuz and everest showing the vcore at 1.296. The temps are great. Priming all 4 cores the temps don't go above 53C. I am hoping to try to reach at least 4.3GHz for 24/7 operation.
680I apart from EVGA (who gave out free upgrades to newer REV) do not even fully support 65nm Quads and none support 45nm Quads AFAIK (Asus do not).
If your going to buy a ££££/$$$$$ Quad CPU FFS get a decent P45/X48 Mobo not a 680/780 POS. ;)
I have heard that the P45 mobo's are great for the quads. I currently have this asus x48 and have been pleased. I like this board better than the nvidia boards except for the raid controller. I got faster throughput with the nforce raid controller. As far as this cpu, I would recommend a P45 or an asus x48 mobo. The only x38 I had was a dfi board and I had really bad luck with it.
I see why you guys bash Nvidia.. but when I look at it. My CPU is doing just as good as most of yours on my 750i.. except for a small few of you.. napalm, Jor.. and a few others. lol. So whats the big deal here.
I don't by ANY means LOVE Nvidia. I like the GPU's.. and I just got the Mobo I have now as it fit what I wanted, was looking for, and my budget back when I first built this system. and yes I've updated almost everything in this system over the last little while but the Motherboard, to be honest with you. I dont' even like my board. not really. It's served me well, and I've not had any problems at all. and it's keeping my Quad at 4.0 Ghz with 1.304v with NO problems. and was doing pretty good at 4.205 Ghz also might I add. so it worked great for me. but I just never upgraded for that reason. I was only looking into the 790i as it's a good deal for the price. thats all. and I wasn't looking to get a 780i. I was looking at a 790i.. but I didn't get one. I bought a new lens for my DSLR Camera instead. :) and I'm very exited about that actually..screw the 790i. plus after looking up reviews I remember the original 790i had many many problems. I don't want problems.
Ya know, to be honest. I'll probably never go SLI.. yea it would be nice, but the LITTLE.. like what.. maybe 6-8% increase in Performance isn't really worth it. I got this board, and the bigger PSU just in case I ever went SLI. but I probably never will.. not to mention I could always get the new Nvidia Dual card if i really wanted to. but currently the GTX260 is doing everything I could ask for. and don't care to upgrade it until I need to.. and there's just SOOO many 775 boards these days it's hard to decide on what to get. If I got a new Mobo I'd want to get into something for Under $200.
How does the new Nvidia X58 board do.. anyone know? they get back on track with that.. or is it Shyte like the 6/7 series.?
Thats definately NOT TRUE anymore. Almost EVERY game now (current, dont bring up some old 1999-2000 game) has SLi support, whether it scales good to mediocre.
Im getting a GTX295 on release day, and as you know its "SLI on a Stick" 2 cards on 1. Crossfire has more issues with game scaling then SLi, SLi is nearly perfect when it comes to that, and this is back in 07-08 when i had 8800GTS 640mb in SLi
Also @ xguntherc, its ALOT more then a 6-8% increase. as long as you game at 1680x1050 or higher resolution, and you like lots of AA and AF. my 2 8800GTS in SLi would truck through 1920x1200 with 4xAA in all my games. while 1 8800GTX would suffer.
Its more than 6-8% and if you have the board its definately worth it. You dont need a new PSU either, a 750w will do fine, especially since its a PC P&C, very high quality and high amps on the 12v Rail. all you need to do is buy the card :)
ya I know. I might sell it and get the new card. but I don't NEED it.
but you all know how us computer enthusiasts are. we want it cuz we have to have it.
FACT !, all games do not run in SLI/Crossfire fully, and the gains are not that great.
You get more issues than fixes, and losing half the cards Ram is a joke TBH.
There is no need for 2 GPU's for now and I can see many threads all over forums with nothing but Dual card setup issues.
Dual GPU's will only be good when they act like a Dual Core CPU.
The GTX295 is another half baked hash job, I certainly can skip it.
You upgrading your GPU to try play a few bad codes jobs and console ports ?
Throwing money/hardware at them is pointless.
@ xguntherc, I knew it would be like talking to a brick wall with your blind faith in Nvidia Chipsets (I have been there too).
Your Rig apart from Mobo is top end, the Mobo is a POS, its not even the Flagship model, the 780 is over it same as the 680 was over the 650 and they all are total crap.
Again AFAIK 45nm Quads are not even supported properly by the 780 so same can be said for the 750 (I owned the 780 and knew this when I bought it) and that's official Asus info.
There is no need for any Nvidia based Mobo unless you want SLI without going to new 1366 Socket, even then I stand by the fact that 2 GPU's is still a waste of time in most cases (I have tried SLI and i will not be trying it again till at least SLI 2).
You have repeatably went from hot to cold on changing your Mobo in this thread but what do you want to hear from me or others ?
You want me to BS you and say your Mobo is great and it will get a really high FSB OC on that 45nm Quad ?
I've never once said I had a great board.. I'm not sure what your talking about.
I have simply stated in the past, and yesterday. that even though everyone trashes on the Nvidia boards. I simply stated that even though you all bash it, I've still managed to hit 4.0 Ghz (not a huge accomplishment either).. but Stable as can be, and enjoyed it. I use the computer daily.. for hours. and with my old Q6700 I sat at 3.66 Ghz with this Board. I didn't say I loved it.. Nor that it was an amazing board. I just said that it's done me well, and worked for what I needed.
I don't have any Blind faith to Nvidia. Maybe with GPU's I do. but I would try any other brand of Mobo without thinking twice. Like I said before. This was what I got when I built my system. It's worked GREAT for me since I got it, and thats why when people trash it. I simply don't say "You are Wrong" Nvidia boards are the best.. I never say anything like that. I've said that it's served me well. and done what I wanted it to.
So no, talking to me about that isn't talking to a brick wall. I was just stating that it's done what it was intended to do for "Me."
I've never went from hot to cold on changing my motherboards. I've asked for others inputs on what a good next board would be. And maybe I've not got one for funds or what not. but I've not been hot and cold. I still want a new Mobo. I just don't know what.
I don't really like my board all that much, but it HAS, served me well!
I had 4GHZ on a Asus 780I and E8500, it ran hot but then it ran hot at stock (NB/SB) lol.
Its all the bugs that come with it be it OC or stock I got rid of it under the DSA fast.
Advise you get a P45, and you can ignore any BS about the fact if you run 2x GPU's it will be 2x8 over its 1x16, I have already touched on fact a few times its PCI-E 2.0.
I do not see why anyone needs 2x GPU's esp if RES is not Much Higher than 1920's with MAX AA+AF.
Ya.. well i see what your saying. but I'm on a quad. it's a little harder to get 4.0 Ghz on a Quad then a E8500 and mine runs cool as hell..
right now I'm at 4.0 Ghz and my idle temps are 31/31/30/30 on my Quad. those are pretty good temps for Air Cooling and a Quad.
So your recommending I get a P45 then huh. I was thinking of getting the UD3.. how is that?
All the peeps are hitting 4GHZ+ on here with Q9650 E0's AFAICS.
They stand a far better chance on other Chipsets than crappy Nvidia 680/780 and even slightly better 790I owners do.
You ain't ever going to get the best out that CPU on your Mobo period m8.
The Gigabyte P45 is said to be the best for OC'ing as its Rev 3 Chipsets, not sure if Asus have these yet but mines is Rev 2 Chipsets (not Mobo Rev).
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6 is good.
Hmmm it seems noone has managed to get these bad boys 4.3Ghz stable on a x48 mobo...
I didn't say Nvidia boards were amazing or anything like that. Just was saying that mine was working good for me, you seem angry for some reason.. and again, I'm not trying to say my board is good. or to cause a argument or anything of that sort. but look at kill a wat above this post. he can't get 4.3 stable on his x48.. and he says it looks like no one can. He's at 4.2 Ghz. and my board does 4.205 Ghz stable.
I'm just saying.. ok. haha.
and yea that EP45-DQ6 sure looks good. but I dont' need 8 USB ports and all that. I might someday soon upgrade my board. but if I do that means I'll need to go to DDR3 huh? most likely. Thats ok to I guess since it's getting pretty cheap these days. I could sell my two 2x2GB kits and get one kit of ddr3.
I might get a new board eventually, but I can't right now. Thanks for your input though.
I'm deff not angry, why would I know I have a stable rig ?
Simply "POS" is the only term I can use to describe my 680 and 780.
Also I'm done as I know by reading this entire thread, its like talking to a brick wall trying to help you get the best out your hardware.
I don't care less what others have or get out of it, fact is your CPU is wasted in that Mobo IMO. :)
It is clear that P45 is the best for highest stable overclock. Although not everyone has or wants to buy one for various reasons which is fair enough.
I am still at early stages for testing stability of 4.3Ghz as Im too busy playing Mass Effect but for me I would only consider a change in mobo if I am pretty certain I can get 500x9 without any extreme o/c techniques such as modding 12V rails etc else my rig is just fine and is over 15 hours (which I manually stopped) Prime Blend stable :)
Good decisions lads, a quad at 4-4.2Ghz is amasing already...it's nice to show off higher for benching, but at some point it can get silly... really would love to see all of them high Ghz claims in daily ops with high end or normal AIR/H2O cooling... I know this is extremesystems, but some users get way to carried away as this forum has evolved to a more general aid forum, the extreme section is another section in this forum... the same problem persists : some highly experienced clockers start a thread and then most users think they can do the same...
And let's look at them P45 mobo's in half a year, I have big doubts for them 500FSB 24/7clocks
@ Humeyboy What are you trying to achieve ? If the guy is happy with his current OC and setup , good for him. My 680I Striker still runs strong with an E8400 (and that board I got for free, from a very frustrated user) the 750FTW isn't a bad board at all... you just need to be more lucky with a Nvidia chipset...and if it runs the lads' Q9650@4ghz be happy for him... MAYBE he can get 4.2 out of it on another board : NOT A BIG DEAL MATE !! as you will hardly notice anything in gaming, folding etc...
And to throw back the ball at you, 4ghz with an E8600 I can do that with an E8200 on a far cheaper board, maybe a bit more volts but it would be as fast as your setup...
@ Leeghoofd, Are you BLIND ?
If you read this entire thread you would see he has moaned about his Mobo on and off all through it.
1 minute wanting a new Mobo, next minute his Mobo is now great.
He is obv waiting/wanting someone to tell him his Mobo is great and this would justify his purchase.
I REPEAT, I have been there with loyalty to Nvidia Mobos. and finally someone got me to see the light, after NF4 (great) and NF5( ok) they are sh1t).
If he cannot listen to multiple peeps advise he should not bother moaning about his Mobo. :)
Well mate I lost interest a long time in this thread, early results were promising and maybe like I stated before a bit too much for the common user to replicate. After that nothing but users that could not get them exact results... I only reread the last pages as a friend was also posting results here, but just saw the on and off between you two...
Best thing is to let it rest and to ignore. And don't react so agressively using S words etc... or telling I'm blind lol
I hope someone still will posts some nice clocks here with something else than a CPU-Z screenie, 1mb Pi run or an everest bandwith benchmark...
Hopefully these CPU's will drop drastically in price with the new Phenom II on the block now ( although early results indicate it was again mega overhyped, or all the reviewers just got louzy samples )
There's rumour of an Intel price cut end of this month but no idea which models are exactly involved...
