I think power consumption may still be up in the air. Cypress is only supposed to require one PCI-E power connector, right?
i was really happy with how well the 4870 did for its chip size, i think they may be going larger simply to have single chip solution that may still rival all competition, but hopefully keep with their small cores at a great price that worked so well for the 4000s
Except that 1.5* previous gen would surpass Moore's law of doubling the performance every 24 months (it would result in 2.25x the inital performance every 24 months).
If we assume the new generations of card are coming out every year, and that they respect Moore's law of transistor density (and that transistor count equals performance), then the performance would be
nextgen = sqrt(2) * previous gen
or roughly nextgen = 1.41 * previous gen
Just sayin' ...... ;) (sorry about being anal)
its honestly tough to compare across generations when there is a major change in how things are handled, ie DX versions. if we look at just a framerate change, it may be totally different from the changes in furmark rendering.
there is however a different way to look at it, which it overly simplified. the real changes only occur with new processes, going from 55nm to 40nm etc. if there are any delays, then everything can be held back by months, and when expecting a new one every 24 months, 2 month delay is pretty massive in that formula.
looking at AMD, the 45mn quads came out at the beginning of this year, and intel is showing off a 32nm already. the performance jump per year for AMD has been quite sucky since their attempt to switch to 45nm, and they felt the pain of using 65nm for like what, 3 years?!?
so to end it, im not a big fan of trying to say one generation will be x more powerful than the previous. as there are only a few real things that go into it, and each of them can sway the numbers very easily.
To the guy who wanted the price on a 5890 x2 or w/e it will be called.
I'm gonna stay predictable and say it will be the same as a 4870 x2 so around 600.
I say their main stream card (read: 5890) will be around 300-350. The 5850 (read: 4850 equivalent) will probably be around 200-250. The rest...I don't care about.
So the USS Hornet is where AMD is going to launch Evergreen from from. Very interesting and very original.. :)
They might be planning on dropping down some cards with attached bombs on Nvidia headquarters... "World Card War I" ??... **runs and hides in the basement with a tin foil hat*

Forget all the DX11 haters... I can't wait to see DiRT2 in DX11 !!

4770 "reference" cooler being put to good use.
Estimated to be between a 4870/4890 performance for a "current" 4850 price.
VRam chips on both sides... Does it mean it's 2gb? Or is the PCB just too short?

4770 redux for DX11.
it would be awesome to see this launch with as much power as a current 150$ card, but cost only 100$
its a tough call for the pricing department, i would sell a 4890 with DX11 for 200$ until nvidia gives it some competition. but then again, selling them near dirt cheap would be a great way to get everyone to convert and obtain nuken futs market share.
Just want to share with you guys. One of my local forumers got this.

If those are accurate... 5890x2 at $400, nice price, but on Oct. 19:confused:
So, we won't expect the x2, or something this Sept after all?
I don't think it will be faster than the 4870. I'm thinking more along the lines that it will match the performance of the high end of the previous generation (similar to the 3870 -> 4670 transition and then some). If that's the case, then my statement holds water since even a 4890 can't make use of much over 1GB of video memory.
the x2 have come out last in the past but i think 400 is to low a 5870x2
I don't care about this crossfire X2-BS. HD-5850 for 160 Euro? Count me in :D
Hence, it's safe to say September will be the month where HD5xxx series is coming out.
is the card posted above the "midrange" series? or the equivalent to 4850?
All he's saying is that price wise, it's equivalent to a 47xx type card, but performance wise, expect it to be a 4870-4890 performer
Looks like the leaks are coming in!
I'd say the way HD4770 OCs is a good way pointer for other 40nm chips too. They say TSMC 40nm is Black Diamond 2, and 130nm version of it was nice...
i'm seriously looking forward for these cards ! my 8800 gts 512 needs to get some rest :D
Sounds about right. Thats a few days before Windows 7 goes retail. According to what AMD/ATI had in mind. As for the rest of the lineup:Quote:

I wonder if AMD finally fixed their power guzzling, freq-transition-flickering GDDR5 controller. The scary thing is, RV770 had the issue from get-go, and they didn't fix it in RV740, nor in RV790. That's 3 chips in a row with an issue that alone blows the idle power consumption sky high...
4890 idle power consumption is lower then GTX260 and lower then 4870 idle and load , they refined the design before putting it on the 40nm .
^GTX260 216 idles at ~40W lower than HD4890. All because GDDR5 is not downclocked, resulting in crazy idle current draw for the MEMI/O.
:stick:
1.2 GHZ CORE and 2GB MEM @ 1.2GHZ.
^Huh?
Not gonna happen.
Xbit labs show a different story they measure at the card and its somewhat consistent with other reviews i saw .But am not sure who to believe .
I just changed my idle clocks on the hd4870x2 to 300 core and ram and turned catalyst ai to off to run in single core mode. All good.
is that dynamic ? i mean, do you have to enable the "crossfire" again manually + the clocks each time you want to play or not ? if not, sounds like a good deal ! :)
its getting close to launch and no specs yet, i think this might be a paper launch, lets hope not, cross your fingers.

Please note that the benchmark results will be known around two weeks after the product launch, in order to give enough time for paper magazines and partners to fill in the stocks world-wide. Just like the Radeon 4800 series, Evergreen hardware will be available world-wide at the same time [this time around, late September - around 24th].
You could easily see that when downclocking the RAM manually in idle. Yes, the GDDR5 eats a lot of energy while doing barely anything...
So, I sure as hell hope as well that AMD fixes this :yepp:
You could do that "kind of" automatically with Rivatuner, at elast there you can set different clocks for 2D and 3D ;) Dunno about CF though.
Here's a thread about that (in german), I'm quite sure there's something like that in english forums :)

To save energy once and for all, activate Overdrive in Catalyst Control Center, then edit the created .xml file which is in the following path for Windows Vista: C:\Users\here.you.put.your.username\AppData\Local\ ATI\ACE\Profiles.
Switches perfect from 350 for mem and 350 for clock to 900 and 750 for my 4870x2.
Interesting posts by neliz and CJ.

Wow. I sure hope the Hd5850 pulls P16000 Vantage. Priced right, it will be the best-selling card by far.
That seems trustworthy :)
says 5870 but look more like a 5850 with odd cooler

:confused2
:comp10: I have no idea what that is.
Do I see only one 6 pin connector?
Yeah, it seems more likely as a HD 5850 variant, with its single 6 pin PEG, the power regulation design, the heatsink design. The PCB looks quite long though, atleast compared to the previous x850 cards from ATi. But the cooling solution seems quite good, exhausting the air directly to outside the case.
looks like a non-reference 4850 with aftermarket cooler to me
http://www.theinquirer.net/img/3710/no-sinks.jpg
the fact that it's a rendering is noticable. But it seems as the plastic cover has been removed, and some heatsinks, as said before. I don't think that will be the standard design.
The render looks different from the pics. recently taken at AMD demo. The render's exhaust occupies a full single slot.
Hmm, thats quite a long pcb there.
Is it just me or have I seen that render ages ago though?
yah, apparently its old, thers another pick with the cooler's shroud on it... just concept art.
It better not be the card! I do not like how it's longer than the 4870.
I just hope that ATI will drop the red PCB color. Red just doesnt go with some things, while black would go with everything.
+1 For Black pcb
just so you know guys, and for people hesitating, the 5850 picture that looks like 3d to everyone, comes from here : http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,6...&page=1&show=n ;)
this picture was released more than 5 months ago, but with the name FirePro on it
