Did you buy that 70-200 Maxxx? Or just renting? Because it's a badass lens for sure! I'm looking at the 70-200 f/4 on the Canon side.
Great Shot maxx, quite sharp.

Dave_Sz: I think they were just about the same distance from the lens, I tried to make sure they would both be sharp, but with the shallow DOF from the wide aperture, part of the candle may have been slightly out of focus.
I actually had it at -1/3 EV. For some reason when its cloudy the D300 wants to overexpose most shots. Not sure why. I turned down the EV in NX2 and lip was still washed out so I left it alone.
lol. No I don't own it. I just rented it for the weekend. Its the lens I rent when I go to the zoo or wild animal park.

Another shot marred by the poor lighting causing slow shutter speeds. For this one I should have gone with a higher ISO and faster shutter, but it was a candid photo that I got when taking photos of the California Condor.

Sharpening wont really help. It looks a bit soft due to camera/bird shake. Most likely the bird because the lens has VR and I have a pretty steady hand. As to the contrast, yes it looks "better" with more contrast, but I was keeping to reality which had much less contrast. In the sunlight it would have looked alot better but sadly I was in the rain.

Well Smart Sharpen is currently among the top sharpening algorithms available today. It is part of my batch process that I tied into LR2. No image gets resized without then being sharpened since they become so soft.
I know its the best and sometimes it does great things but I have had alot of instances where it ends up sharpening OOF objects and it just annoys me. I tested it out on the photo below last night and it worked out great at .3 pixel 60% lens blur, but on other photos of mine it didnt do what I wanted it to. Usually I think the photo is sharp enough so I dont bother with trying to fix it. That said I will give the two bird photos a shot when I get home tonight.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3240/...e0b14e72_b.jpg
I know what you mean about OOF areas - that is something that I wish we had a better way of dealing with. Right now you need to sharpen each image manually with a mask so you only get the area you want. On certain images, this can be a lot of work. At least when I use 100 or less at .2-.5 pixels it doesn't have a drastic effect and most people wouldn't notice the difference in the background since they never saw it before anyway. However, it can make a world of difference for the subject of the photo.
Great pics Maxx.

I like that one a lot, smee. I find myself looking at the out-of-focus area for a long time trying to figure exactly what's going on. Is this a composite, or did you use something like flash-blur?
White balance might be a bit to the warmish side, but I think it works for this shot.

soul, one thing I would do to improve upon that (huge improvement btw) is to put a mask on the sky and do some NR on it, or just mask off the sky from the smart sharpen. Or was that JPG compression failure?
Yeah that would be a good idea, the sky is a bit distracting being overexposed also. I didn't darken it though because it would just turn to blah.

I'm still here, just been going through my 2000 pictures from the Romania trip, picked out the best of them (311 of them), now I'm going through those and editing the ones I like, and then I'll post some..... ROFL...:D

R0bert, sharpness comes from having a good lens.
It also helps if you can sharpen in post processing, I use a Smart Sharpen in Photoshop on all of my pics.
I now have a Mark III.
I've gone from 6 lenses to 3. I'm trying to streamline my lens setup.
My goal is to get the Sigma 12-24 or Canon 16-35L next.
Then its time to move onto the primes. I would love to own the trinity (35L, 85L, 135L) sometime in the near future. :)
I've got Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens so that's not the one I'd expect photos of not being sharp, while it still does make them unsharp. Maybe issue with my hands or what, I got to finally try some shooting with tripod. But then the earth's movement could be an issue.
But I see it only while viewing on 100% and almost always I resize the pics so it's almost impossible to tell, it just annoys me.

Amazing Metric.
Smart Sharpen replaced Unsharp Mask in Photoshop CS2 as the best sharpening method. It is more advanced and does a better job. Try 50-100%, .2-.5, Lens Blur, More Accurate. Adjust between those numbers depending on photo size. Really large pics will need closer to 200%.
The 50mm 1.8 is not sharp at f/1.8. I'm not sure what aperture you are using most of the time but it doesn't get really sharp until you are around f/2.8 I think...I don't have this lens personally so I'm just going off what I've read. It could also be focus accuracy?
I really need that lens :yepp:
I like this picture. It has a vintage feel to it. Only thing I would have done is keep the cord on the right from touching the edge of the frame, but that's nitpicking.

Ya, me too man. Every time I use it, it makes me want it more and more. Although to be honest, What I really want from Nikon is a 70-300 F2.8 VR. 200 is great, but I find myself cropping alot, especially for bird photography.
that is freaking me out. One thing though, Your ISO is at 800 and SS is 1/320. For a sill photo like that you could have gone down to as low as 1/30 (assuming you have a steady hand) or 1/100 if you dont. Even at 1/100 you could have a considerably lower ISO speed.
My latest.
