What are the 920's doing for wcg bench marks? number wise obviously heh
Look in the bench thread :stick:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=134602
I caved in and jumped on the bandwagon. Looking forward to creeping up the ranks a tad faster now.
So, I was looking into making an i7 system, and i came across a thought. I would like to get a server board and make a 2 cpu (8 core, 16 thread) system and had a question. Would it be possible to only buy one cpu to start with and run it off of that as I am strapped for cash atm, but then add the second one later when I get the money?
"I'm strapped for cash but I want a dual-socket i7 system. Rawr!"
As far as your question goes, I have no idea, but I know Movieman will have all the info you need.
i7 cpu has one QPI path. So, no, it cannot be used in dual-socket motherboards.
You need to use Gainestown cpu, E5500 series.
To answer your core question, yes, as long as a cpu is installed CPU0 socket, not CPU1.
To be honest though, if you are short on cash, this platform is not for you.
Well, see i'm planning on using some stuff i already have from 'older' computer. I have a hard drive, psu, Optical drive, case, monitor and graphics card (which i may upgrade later) and i have a bunch of other parts laying around if i need them. I'll probably end up upgrading each of them eventually anyway. So I'm looking at it as the only parts I really have to pay for are the motherboard and the cpu.
$288.99 Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202
And I thought i had found a dual LGA 1366 socket, but I can't seem to track it down, I may have been mistaken.
but I plan on a motherboard costing between $200-500 depending on features.
Just a note: I know it may sound funny saying i don't have that much money and i want an i7 system, but just to be completely honest I'm a student (so by definition am broke) and am picking up extra shifts to pay for the system. I already have a decent system, but this gives me something to work toward building myself. I set my goals high so that i have insentive to work hard to reach them but then I also need to keep this moderately cheap (yeah - just hang with me) so that i can build it in the forseable future and then work to upgrade it. And i'm not one of those kid's who's never satisfied with what he has, i just would rather pick up shifts and work toward something in my spare time than sit and watch TV or play halo. Knowing all that, does this sound resonable or is there another platform that I should be working toward?
Oh, and correct me if i'm wrong (I'm kinda new at this) but Gainestown would be Xeon right? when i seach newegg for Xeon i get Irwindale for desktop and Woodcrest, Harpertown, Yorkfield, Dunnington, Wolfdale, Kentsfield and Clovertown for servers but no Gainestown. And nothing comes up for E5500.
See the attachment for expected prices.
You'd want at least E5550 to retain i7 920 speed, and you will need 2 of them. Prepare to pay around 400 to 500 USD for a motherboard.
The rest parts are nothing compared to the cost of those three.
So, basically a grand for a cpu.
Never go below E5520. E550x cpu has no HT and half of L3.
So, i realize this probably isn't the thread for this... is there a thread for this or should I start one?
And looking at it, if I was going to do that, why wouldn't I go for an AMD Opteron with a board with 4 cpu sockets like
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813151089
It's only $400 for the board and you can get 2 2.2Ghz processors for the same price as one E5550. That would Yield 16 real cores for roughly the same price.
Start a new thread.
Well, since Movieman replied, I guess I will, too.
For quad sockets, you need 8000 series opteron, and from what I know, even the crappiest one costs 600 USD per cpu.
To make it worse, maintaining a quad socket system is not something someone completely new to server stuff should do. Besides, Core i7 is amazingly efficient CPU when it comes to crunching. No current generation Opteron can match it.
From memory:
A Nehalem at 3700mhz= 26,000+ a day in WCG
8 core Clovertown at 3000=23,000 a day
8 core harper at 3600= 34,000 a day
dual opty,8 core, = app 11-12,000 a day in WCG
Now a 8 core gainstown at 3200mhz should do right around 50,000 a day in WCG..
That's it in a nutshell..:D
Well, I (still) have two Barcelona chips which run at 1.8ghz. That score is exactly what my dual Barcelona rig produced. Now that Shanghai is out, and with a good improvement in ghz, an affordable one costs less than 200 USD at 2.2ghz, so I assume a dual Shanghai rig can produce 20,000 a day in WCG.
I want a dual Shanghai, but to be honest, I absolutely LOATHE their nforce 3600 chipset based boards. They SUCK.
I agree on Shanghai. I think I was remembering either your numbers or Twilyth's..
Heck, My socket 775 Asus P5K Premium that is a what? 18 month old board, is pulling over 21K a day with that X3380 in it at 4171 on air..
Granted, that is a monster chip but 21K a day on air on 4 cores is getting into Nehalem range..
Well, there are much cheaper solutions to get a dual socket system. Just don't aim for Nehalem at the moment, it's the new tech and is expensive. I even sold two (aged) dual socket systems to XS members recently for dirt cheap.
For Otis11,
I'd say either aim for dual socket Shanghai or Harpertown. 1 grand will be enough for a semi-decent setup.
How are you getting 21k a day? My q9550@4ghz only gets anywhere from 12-(16 on a great day)
My i920@3.4ghz only gets 14-18 on avg. occasionally around 20 and for 1 day it got 24k. not sure what happened.
anyway; I would imagine my 9550 would have at least as much crunching power as you xeon
EDIT: I wonder if it has anything to do with FAH on ati GPU which utilizes 1 core; which would slow production for WCG?
But you better bet that will cost quite a pretty penny.
:brick: Why don't I have money!
Edit: Looking at those numbers makes me think my computers could use help. I have 4 computers crunching and i'm getting 12-15k ppd... total. I mean I understand 3 of them are 6 years old, but one is a decently new quad core. :eh:
Nice; I wish mine looked like that. I dont even get that with my I920. need to get that thing clocked up a bit (once I get off my lazy butt to do it).
What projects do you run? I run aids, cancer, and drugs. on vista ultimate 64.
I guess the important thing is I am helping out and slowly moving up the ladder!
YES.... Once I get my cashflow working again(lost job recently) I'm look into getting a regular i7 920 or 940 and clocking the hell out of it, OR getting a Xeon EP based system, 2 E5520's with a SM X8DAi Motherboard.
If someone can figure out how to overclock on a dual 1366 socket motherboard, screw the OC'ed i7, I'll go get a Xeon DP(errr EP) and whatever motherboard that does it gets my money!
My budget is only so large(about $1200-$1500 for CPU, MB and RAM ONLY) and I'd still want to use this as my main/gaming rig(in addition to crunching). I already own everything else, a 4870X2, 1.2KW PSU, etc leftover from my main rig that I parted out and sold. While I'm currently leaning towards i7, if some one figures out how to OC the Xeon EP's I'll spend a little extra!
My suggestion to you is put all this on standby until you've found a new job, got at least a few months of it under your belt and some security and then think about a new system and thats only if your single.
If married tuck away at least 6 months living and bill money before thinking on new machinery.
This stuff is fun but you got to keep it in a proper perspective my friend.
I've actually been jobless since the end of November. While moneys tight, financially, I've got enough savings to take me through all the way to August/July, assuming my bills/rent don't go up(they shouldn't). That's not including the money I've made off the sale of(most, not all, like I said I kept certain parts) my previous system(truthfully a part of this has gone to food, as I'm trying to leave the saving untouched except for bills), and I've got a recently repaired(just got it back today actually) MacBook Pro I'm thinking of selling to fund this system.
Normally I'd agree with you, and put this planned build on hold, but I've been without a main rig since January/February, and being stuck on a system that can't game/crunch has been annoying the hell out of me. :p: I went from having 3 dedicated fairly high end Folding/Crunching systems, to none. I'm currently stuck on a defective Pentium 4 POS system.
I'm ancy for a new system, and if I have to sell the MacBook, I will. :ROTF: Don't get me wrong, I realize that its not the best idea to be looking at spending on a new rig at this point and time, but the money that would be spent on this system would only add a month worth of $$ onto my savings. Besides, if things aren't looking up by July, along with said rig, I still have plenty of other asset's I'll sell off.
To be perfectly honest? If I don't find a job by August, I'll be :banana::banana::banana:ed regardless of if I spend the money on a new rig or not. I might as well have some fun till then.
Oh and I'm single, if I had a S/O, do you think they'd let me spend this money? Regardless of if I had a job or not. :ROTF:
Priorities my friend..
A POS P4 will get you through just fine..
Just tell yourself it's 2002 not 2009..;)
Hold your money till you have work.
With what I see these asses in Congress doing and in the Executive doing I don't see a pretty picture and the job market will get worse..
Grab something, anything to help extend the money you have even if it only adds a $100.00/week to you..
has anyone noticed their points being higher than normal this week? My points have been quite a bit higher this week on my systems. Today has been the best day. I got 24k+ on my I7 @ 3.3ghz, 22k+ on my 9550 (which usually only gets avg 15k/day). Today I damn near hit 50k and I am usually only around 30-35k/day. no changes have been made to the I7 rig but i switched my 9550 over to cancer, child cancer, drugs only. Just wondering if anyone has seen unatural gains in their points.
That's assuming everything behaves. I've had some waiting for validation before, though not for long and there were three inconclusives in the list.
Or get SetFSB working, from what
I have been reading, even though the clockgen chip that the X8DAi/3 is supported, support for the chipset must also be added before it will work. I'd say get in contact with the SetFSB guy again, see if he can't add support for your board, who knows maybe its just some strange/odd thing that needs to be fixed to work on the X8DAi/3.
Are is anyone else other we know than the SetFSB program/Guy who can perhaps take a look into software changing the base clock and/or bios?
I've had mine on 100% for some time now, and it seems to be doing fine at 191X21 @ 1.35 vcore. The temps seem a little high for my taste, but everyone suggests 70ish is normal for the i7 on load. Are you i7 guys leaving the CPU usage at 100%?
Here is a screenshot of what it is doing:
http://www.hi-upload.com/upload/uplo...cgscreeni7.JPG
It seems to be able to get 30k+ if I'm away from the computer just letting it crunch. The power even cut off at my house one day and it got 20k while being off for 8 hours.
I've had a I7 940 running 100% 24/7 from Dec until end of april with temps in the high 70's to low 80's without any problems, since it was a horrible clocking chip I've sold it though and got a 920 D0 which has been running for ~1 week now at 4200 with 100% load, temps are lower, but still in the 70's.

So has that dual nehalem stopped loafing yet? :ROTF:
Goodies arrive yet Dave?
The NHL does need a neew source of hockey pucks...
Looks like we may be seeing a new i7 pretty soon. i7-870 and i7-860 both in 95W

Here's the whole chart if your interested, but beware - it's big. (56k++ warning)
That's Lynnfield, which is not i7/Bloomfield as they are currently. It uses a different socket, and will be using the P55 boards, not X58.
On the plus side, they'll have the same clock-for-clock as Bloomfield, cost less and have cheaper boards to boot.
Edit: Actually looking at that, looks like Lynnfield is going to be both i5 AND i7, which is an interesting way to do it, and I'm not entirely sure how that'll work. Lynnfield has an integrated PCIe controller instead of using the X58, so as far as I'm aware it won't be compatible with LGA1366 X58 boards...
Eller
Update on the gainestowns..
Here's the little beasty showing how much 'stones" it has..
This is using the "credit/month" tab to get a better representation of all the machines..
Keep in ming that we lost power yesterday for hours and that killed my day there.
I'll let you guess which is mine but it's in the top 10 and look at the beasts above me!
