if you ask me galvanic corrosion is way overrated... i know people who are running copper and alu in the same loop for a long time and they have no problems. if you use a water additive the corrosion wont happen or will happen so slowly it would take decades to really damage any components.
even if you dont use water additive, the worst ive seen was a block getting a rough surface and changing the color, and that was after 1 year of usage or so... :)
Could anyone post settings that worked for him for 500fsb?
Thanx
I am not sure if this applies. I have had trouble trying to download drivers and bios updates from official company websites because of a dsl connection at work. Using the same laptop at home with cable lets me do all of that.
finally ordered one:up:
spent too much time with it on the basket and holding off due to price, but the temptation got too big:p:
I just received my Blackops. I am pretty sure that the top plate for the NB block is aluminum. It is painted black and scratches easily. The back of the box clearly shows a copper top.
We are talking about mis-presentation here, it was really strange that hipro5 confirmed in his posts that it is all-copper ... probably he has a different "demo" board, which had all reviewers?
Regarding galvanic corrosion - the speed of it depend on many factors, such as presence of oxygen/acid in the water, temperature, oxidation of surfaces, etc. etc. but the common rule (such as you can't control all factors) is: http://www.fourseasonsroofingandsidi.../mixmetals.htm
Of course if you use a corrosion inhibitor or special liquids to protect against it, there is no problem. But I bough 4-in1 all-copper version, as stated on my box, why should I accept an aluminum cover?Quote:
So, never mix metals!
BTW the motherboard ia awesome, it is rock stable, as expected. Thanks for it and those minor issues are not     ... those just should be fixed to make this product absolutely perfect, IMO.
Anyone know where to get CF bridges that work with slots 1 & 3? :D
I know people are just getting their boards, but, I have a question. I am running on G17 bios currently. I am running E8400. I do understand that the motherboard is tuned for quad core chips, but I want to see how far I can go. My goal is 500fsb and 2000mhz on Cellshock ram.
I am getting strange ram dividing issues. I am trying to boot at stock ram speeds but when I go into windows, I am getting a lower clock than what I set in the bios. When I set ram to 1800mhz in the bios or something else I get a 5:8 ram divider or 2:3 ram divider? Does anyone know whats going on?
Update to G22 BIOS;)
Thanks. I was sticking with G17 because I think heard that it had the best ram timings. The moderator posted a G22 bios in this thread but I can't find it on the Quantum Force website? Is the one in this thread specifically for the Blackops?
Although, I have expressed displeasure in the aluminum top in this thread, it works quite well. It is keeping the northbridge very cool 28C at stock volts.
edit: Thanks DMH. The G22 bios in the thread solved the wierd ram divider issues.
Another question. Which option in the bios turns off speed step? Thanks in advance
Would like to see DDR2 version of this board...
I would like advice on which memory to get for this board. I want 4GB, but am not clear if I should go with a 4GB kit or 2 x 2GB kit. I have read that come X48 boards have had problems driving 4 sticks?
I am also unlcear if there are other limitations of running 4 sticks compared with 2, I imagine there are, but I havent bumped into anyone talking about them.
Im kinda looking at these :-
2 x 2GB Corsair TWIN3X2048-1800C7DFIN 7-7-7-20
1 x 4GB Corsair TW3X4G1800C8DF 8-8-8-24
2 x 2GB CellShock DDR3 14400 1800MHz 8-7-6-21
2 x 2GB Cellshock DDR3 15000 1866 MHz 8-8-8-16
I understand asking a question like this is very subjective, and that the board is new so there is not a wealth of tested combinations, and that the BIOS is changing to improve stuff all the time, but I have the board, the processor is a 9770 btw. CPU & NB will be WC.
Thank you in advance.
Hi!
Has anyone any luck at overclocking an E8500 chip at 450 /500 FSB
if so can they post their settings
I was stable with my SIIE for a while, but typically this board works fine for a while and then decides to go back to crashing and freezing
i am hoping to to get the blackops board, but want to make sure the E8500 will work fine first
thanks
flanr
Well, at least for now, 500 fsb seems like mission impossible on this board. I managed to boot using 8X500, though it was not benchable at all. Just a winrar test and then it crushed. I tried several combinations with the timings but no luck. I someone else can give us stable settings for 500 fsb I would appreciate it as well.
460 and 470 though, is pretty easy on this board but again it's pretty low for an E8500. This board was built only for unlocked multipliers and that is final... aka QX9XXX:up:
I have test today the news BlackOps X48 :)

No problem mate. I will post my settings later when I will get home (I am supposed to be working right now :D). I have solid 9X450 24/7 settings :yepp:. Are you running your system on air cooling??? NB temps can get preety high (47 idle), though my room temps are 27-30C (I leave in sunny Greece).
got this from blackops product page on foxconn website

Oh OK, I thought that you meant using an aftermarket cooler. Onboard cooler sucks, not good at all, block is too deep, too massive and keeps all heat inside no matter what.

Just joined the 500 Club!!!:D
I am not talking about the waterblock. I haven't tried the board on a water loop yet. I was talking about the passive cooling system. Block+small delta.
I'm sorry. I misunderstood.
Check this post. It worked fine for me.
Didn't try it. Though, with these frequency, timings, sub timings it should be fine through any stress. I got 520 yesterday. I am testing with a quad core for the moment and it's much better than my 8500. :yepp:

a full review will come later

Thanks flanr, for the heads up.
After I get off of work, I am going to try and emulate the Anandtech results. I am kind of glad that I have a similar setup with the 1866 Cellshocks except I have an E8400 and they have a E8500 ES.
Anandtech set all their Dram timings manually at 8-8-8-24 PL7 1T @2000. I left my timings mostly up to the SPD at 7-7-7-20 PL-6 1T @1800. The only value I set was PL-6.
In their preview, they used 1.673v for the NB. Is that safe? I am WC'ing and am reluctant to put more than 1.5 at the moment.
They set some interesting values with the GTL ref volts. I left all of mine at 0.
In their preview, they used the "White Slots". Is there a tangible difference between the blue and white slots?
I am really happy that there are more reviews using an actual retail board. On another note, does anyone one know which bios they used?

I'll try to find some 32M stability at those settings :D
After that I'll start to find the max fsb on this board.
How safe is 2.3v for memory and 1.7 for the NB? That seems like quite a bit.
For some reason when I OC my e8400 to any speed. I will run 3DMARK06 with my GPU at stock settings it starts to hang, and sometimes give me a blue screen? Is it do to the PCI clock being at stock? Or just a bad OC on the cpu or is it the memory. And what are you guys using for the PCI clock speed? 100-120?
Thanks
Is 2000mhz just for benching or is it possible to have 24/7?
Granted that you're cooling the NB and keeping it under 65C, 1.7V is safe for 24/7.
Thank you.
I was following Anandtech's example. I think I got to 500fsb and Ram at 2000mhz using their tweaks.
It took me 6 hours and a lot of bsods. I was getting more and more bsods the higher I raised my ram. At 2.2v it bsod after posting. But at 1.99v its stable.
Maybe I am overly enthusiastic. Which is the best way to stress test a overclock?
Edit? Did I do this right? Is it good/bad? What other things should I provide?
Edit. I tried Orthos and it failed after 1 second at 1.45v.

Hi guys! :)
I wanted to drop in, and provide those of you interested the settings that worked well for me on Black Ops, set up with Wolfdale processor and 2x1GB of Corsair Dominator DIMMs.
First up was a month-old P02 BIOS I downloaded from Foxconn's website. It has bugs that all of you know, e.g. forced half-multipliers even though option is not visible, Command Rate stuck at 1T. But despite those problems, it wasn't awfully difficult to get the system stable. This is sort of basic get-going config, default Performance Level @ L 8.
In general, motherboard is set up a bit differently than, e.g. Asus P5E3 Premium, by default at 500FSB/DDR3-2000, meaning pretty aggressive tRFC, tighter TWR and tRTP. I tuned it up a bit for better stability. vPLL can be still dropped to about 1.60v, but board appeared to need a tad more vNB for the speed I ran. Compared to Asus P5E3 Premium, where even at 533FSB/DDR3-2133 about 1.61v (measured) is needed. See below:

Next I grabbed the latest BETA G22 BIOS, and basically set it up in identical way as P02, except for Performance Level @ L 7. You can see boost in Everest Ultimate bandwith scores as well as better time for Dual SPi32M. I snapped a screenshot of ORTHOS at over 2hr mark as it was time to start enjoying weekend - I left the office :)
Next week I will have a bit more time with the board, to play with skews, CPU and GTL Refs. That should bring us closer to the goal, 533FSB/DDR3-2133 :)

I will drop by next week with some screens for QX9770 + 2x2GB Dominators.
Happy tweaking guys
:toast:
Nice job Bachus. The board should shine with the 9770 however the 2x2GB some people have been having some issues with.
hey could someone tell me can a flash bios by using usb stick ?? ..
the windows flash that i did got corrupted and now i cant get into windows and i dont own a floppy drive !!!!!
Solarfall
Grab a thumbdrive with nothing on it. Use the HP utility to create a bootable USB disk. It will format your drive. You will need bootable files if you need those just download a program to make a virtual floppy then format it as bootable in windows then use the files from there. Then put AWDFLASH on the stick and the bios. Hit ESC or Printscreen to select your usb drive to boot from.
I would like to try this method but what do you mean by HP utility?
To make a bootable flash drive with the HP Utility, follow the instructions in the Asus Maximus Formula to Rampage Formula conversion thread (relevant part quoted here for convenience). The flash drive I prepared this way has been tested and boots in the Rampaged Maximus, my EVGA 790i, and my Gigabyte P35-DS3P. I can't guarantee it will work on a BlackOps as I don't have one to test it on, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
I tried for 2 days to get my Blackops to Post at a CPU FSB higher than 177 and No Joy. Does this board, for some reason only Post at 50-66% of the speed selected in BIOS?
But then with any load placed on the CPU it would never increase to 266 or 333 or whatever I set the OCd FSB to in BIOS. I tried 3 different CPUs (Q6600, Q6700 and a E8400) with every Bios (P01. P02, P03, G17-G22) and no Go.
My E8400 got a 3DMark06 score of 1185. Oh well I sent it back for a refund. But I really want a Top Tier X48 DDR3 Mobo to run those HD4870s coming out.
Should I try one more, just in case I received a dud on my initial purchase.
AL
Go to this thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=187199
It seems that you are not the only one with a "dud". It appears to me that this was just a bad case of over hyping a product to get people to buy it, then just move on to the next one in a rinse/repeat motion. For a motherboard that had so many overclockers developing/testing the BIOS, it sure does suck. Oh wait, the ES ones don't suck, I wonder why? Oh nevermind, I know why now, they needed good results to hook people into buying their product.
This is exactly my experience too. You can overclock the BIOS but it doesn't actually produce an overclock, and I am not even going to get into the problems of how difficult it was to get this board to even post with 8Gb of DDR3 RAM.

if anybody have patriot 1866C8 with xmp profiles, before pluging them on the black ops, just remove the xmp profile, otherwise you will see the E0 debug code all the time with bioses ,G17,G20,G21,G22,P02
(realy, where the hell are the debug codes of this mobo?,they put in trimmers for vmods and the necessary debug codes.........)
This must be a bug in bios. I think it will be fixed in next release
You are using 8GB of memory? Why? I can't see any use of that amount in "normal" everday usage
If you have a problem with multiplier:
Check that frequency unlimit option is enabled in bios. If it is enabled and still multi doesn't work, try to use Crystal CPUID and "Intel enhanced speedstep" option from that program. Open CPU-Z and select 9x from CCPUID and see what happens. If nothing, I'm out of answers.
Do you have more questions? I'll try to answer, but everyone should remember, that I'm not the tech support :D
Hi and thank you :)
This is the problem I am having where what I set in the BIOS does not actually happen:
Well I think I have discovered what some of the RAM problems might be from. Again there is a situation where what you set in the BIOS does not actually happen.
Look here at my BIOS setting for memory timings (you can see CAS9 and 2T):
http://planetimagehost.com/images/61793_BIOSoc3.jpg
Here is what actually happens:
http://planetimagehost.com/images/75823_OC5.jpg
Why won't the BIOS set 2T CR? I think this may be what is holding back my memory. It is supposed to run at 1600Mhz 2T, but I cannot get the motherboard to actually run 2T. Am I missing anything here? (and why is it running CAS8 when I put CAS9??)
I really hope they will fix all this stuff because I can see the board has good potential, but it is VERY VERY buggy atm. :(
yes you cannot modify all the DDR3 spd's but you can flash them correctly ;)
To remove the XMP i used the Thaiphoon Burner ;)
Using CrystalCPUID every boot up is a pain in the arse to set multi >8, but it works ;)
My board is sitting here as im waiting on a videocard to finish of my build and the more i read the more i want to send it back to the shop, the non copper northbridge started it off for me.
I actually gave into curioisty and order a set of CellShock 1866Mhz sticks. Once it comes in [1-2 day delivery] I will try them on this board, if I see the slightest glitch or hardship this POS is going back for good. I might even get a P5E3 Premium cross shipped with this one to try them both out.
I started with a P5E3 Premium. It ran without no issues and it booted up fine with OCZ DDR3-1800 Ram. But, it couldn't run my X3350 at 485 x 8, like my Rampage Formula DDR2 board. The P5E3's voltage ranges are quite smaller and go to a lesser upper extreme than the Rampage BIOS.
That is why I was hoping the highly anticipated, God amongst Men Mobo, the great Foxconn Blackops could do what the Rampage could do, but with DDR3 Ram.
Maybe it can, but my experience was horrendous at just trying to get the board to run at more than 60% of the BIOS settings FSB for both CPU and DRAM.
My next attempt will be Asus' P5Q3 Deluxe (P45 chipset) coming out within the next week.
Well, I have a semi-filed RMA for this board. If the CellShocks do not work right with this board I will just ship it back and get a different board. I have seen the P5Q Deluxe in stock at Newegg and Zipzoomfly so far; I'm really hoping for the P5Q3 Deluxe to come out soon so that I have another option since the last two have let me down so far.
Guys, I have a question for you all.
When I take my ram beyond 2000mhz I get a few bsods "memory management" "IRQL not Equal" among other errors.
Just the other day I was messing with my timings to make my settings stable, and I set my Performance Level to "Auto". When I checked Memset it listed PL 7 for my first stick and PL 8 for my second stick. Does anyone know whats going on?
Thanks! That would be next. First up, 2x2GB :)
Thanks! I got something prepared regarding 2x2GB on this board with E8400 for now
Today I flashed the new P04 BIOS, and gave it a spin with our recently laumched 2 x 2GB Dominator kit, TW3X4G2000C9DF. Due to P04 BIOS still locking us out of 2T, I was stuck with Command Rate 1T, but it still worked fine at the memory speed needed for now. The kit I'm using is built with the same ICs than its older brother, TW3X4G1800C8DF, in case the curious types ask the question. :) I hope the settings I show below will be found useful to some users here.

I cant use 1:4 266 333 or 400 even with 500 FSB :(.
So i cant test 500 FSB with rams at 2000, but i will try more settings.
Congrats Foxconn :).
@ M3kk - do you mind to share your BIOS-Settings?
Just been trying G25 - it does not even boot under default settings (no oc) into Windows (keeps telling a file is corrupted). But will give P04 a try now. It still looks like FSB vs. RAM-Clock is dependent and visa vers. Still clueless for the moment, but sure I will love it one day ;)
