ok so do u reckon its the fan then, I got some 120mm fans here which I can test.
about the paste, well atleast I think so. A thin layer, smeared out with a credit card

Not for a quad m8
go here and read instructions for a quad and re apply
http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_rout...2intelas5.html
ah :banana::banana::banana:,well I allways learn something new... lets see,, gotta apply it once more. thx for the link.
ok so I did it now and I added a 120mm Enermax fan @2200rpm. lets see how it will go.
a few mins in prime95: 48/45/40/42, seems pretty good :)
ok so,, 75 'C isnt lethal to this cpu right...
heh, maybe its the fan then which put the temps down by 20'C
I have tried both cc and line method on the quad, the line method droped my temps 10 degrees...hard to argue with results like that.
Plus if the manufacturer recomends that method, then who if not them would know more?
ok it seems they max at around 55/52/46/48 (core1,2,3,4)
are these still too high @stock with ultima90 ?
thats with a 120mm enermax @2200rpm
a OFT question here, it used to be "taboo" to plug in 120mm fans directly to the motherboard :), how is it today? is it cool to use the motherboard fan places for 120mm fans.
and yea trying out a slight OC , 9x300 vcore:1.2V, if it works then its 9x333 . Gotta love the bios on this mobo, well compared to the gigabyte triton K8 one.
Why is that when I choose 1T in bios, cpuz shows me 2T?
I cant seem to get my PC8500 Crucials happy with this motherboard. Can someone please help me set the SUB TIMINGS for this board? I had these sticks in my P5K-DLX and were doing great with sub timings set to AUTO, but this board seems to be VERY PICKY. I cant enable transaction booster at all as the system wont post. My ram is currently set to 4.4.4.12 @ oonly DDR1016 with memory relaxed to 1, and she still only posts half the time. Vdimm is @ 2.2. and I know this ram is 100% fine. Im thinking the sub timings are out of wack on auto, so I would like to set some RELAXED sub timings if some one can help me please. Thanks
this is lame. My load temps are 58/55/49/49 with ultima-90 with a ~90cfm 120mm fan blowing in air + 92mm on the other side "blowing out". Vcore is around 1.225v in bios, and if read from cpuz 1.192v... Well good thing is Iam able to run the cpu @9x333 with 1.192v. no point for me to go further as I would have to increase vcore and temps would go above 60..
Eastcoasthandle are you still air on the N/S bridge ? and how did you mount it ?
Any pics ?
Thanks was curious about this and read all over and seems your the only one to say something about after hours of reading original max posts.
Thanks Kup great thread
I use the fuzion block with a d5 pump and 1/2 tube.
I did not find it was restrictive at all. My 8800 is nice and cool so are my north and south bridge. CPU is a tad hot right now but I'm running 3.9GHz atm and my idle is 42 celcius.
I will agree the fuzion block is rather cheesey, I have a MCW30 block might grab another and mount them over the holidays.
GRNfinger,
Let us know how it goes. Is the Extreme ddr3 only ? The Asus web site says "or ddr2" ???
Anybody else having audio playback issues? My optical port plays sound perfectly, but anything plugged into the "supremefxII" soundcard gets some popping and static every few seconds. I tried spread spectrum and that wasn't it. Aside from reloading the audio driver, I don't know what else to do.
hi there
that reminds me of the old days of creative sb / xfi crackles, related at that time with irq sharing / routing problems.
at the time was solved with pci port change for different irq redetection, disable legacy sound drivers on device manager.
course with the onboard sound supreme u cant use other pci port as its unique, but maybe u can try to change the irq port.
why is it that on the first boot screen it only says count: 2 ? In windows it recognizes 4 cores..
Guys Bios 0907 is up on the ASUS site. I am going out to teh football now so cant test yet. Antone testing please report results back here. Especially Quad FSB clocking and wether the straps are working correctly.
Cheers
Link for bios 0907 added.
no change log:(
maybe 0907 will give acurate temps. 0903 doesn't (at least for me). I'm on 0505 and although it OCs nicely and is stable, it seems a bit flaky.
Gotta test if 0.5 multis are working in this bios...
Hi, not really sure what you mean by inaccurate temps. If you are using probe, or the cpu reading in everest, then your temp reading will alway be inaccurate. You should use either coretemps, or the ones marked core#1, and so on, in everest. All this stuff about the bios reading the temps inaccurate is tosh, it's always been that way as it uses the external diode to take its reading from..
Chris
Hi guys got my system up and running yesterday, i really want to overclock this but have never overclocked before.
I was going to try the example bios settings for anandtech on the first but noticed it was for dual core, and the other example settings from users i really dont know what to try first i dont want to zap my cpu straight away with wrong settings
Is there any settings guide for say 3ghz? as i just want to push it up gradually.
Im currently on q6600 with 4gb (2x2gb stick) of ocz reaperx ram, any help would be really appreciated.
edit: oops first example was for quad core my bad gonna try it out.
Just playing with the board. Primed at 450x8 without much effort.
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/9...ime3tp7.th.jpg
Can't for the life of me get it to bench at 4GHz (445x9), instant restarts as soon as the load starts, regardless of any voltages set. Tried 401, 602 & 903. Its not the cpu, put the same one back in my IP35 Pro and it'll bench all day at 4GHz 1.6v. I have a feeling its something to do with GTL settings. Setting 70% on my Abit made it stable, cant set past 63% on the maximus. Any ideas? Tried all the user configs, didnt help.
Just testing 0907 now. I can report the straps are still not working correctly 266 still no boot .Also 1:1 mem with 400 strap and 333 strap remains unstable.
Problem: A friend of mine has this mb and computer will not boot unless all settings are AUTO. Even if he changes AI Overclock Tuner to MANUAL then exit and save, comp shut down then boots and then shutdown. After that he has to press button to restart again and recieves message OVERCLOCK FAILED. He has tried 2 diff memories (Gskill HZ and Dominator 8500 in both slots) and 2 ps (TT1200 and Silverstone 850). Bios is 0903. All help is appreciated!
Guys 0907 seems the same for clocking as 0903 really. Only done short testing but no real difference I can see. Just testing all STRAP / DDR combinations to see if any have improved in terms of both speed and high FSB clocking.
JUst wondering guys, i was looking at buying a Asus maximus formula and are any of you guys gonna be upgrading to X48 and ditch ur asus maximus formula?
I will see how the FSB overclocking goes on X48 not that impressed with the attainable FSB's on this board yet but I believe improved bios revisions should sort that out. Which ever clocks better I will end up with.
Don't know what ur talking about, but the temps were inacurate. Dunno why, but I was getting 43c in bios and everest and TAT. Stuck there and it didn't move during idle no matter what voltage the cpu was at, 1.3 or 1.7. I know the shortcomings of cpu temp reading and trust me something was causing inacurate readings. I'm on bios 0907 now and the temps seem right, but the board I RMA'd was WAY off with 0903.
what is max OC for E6420 on air ?
So is there an advantage to flash to 907?
seems to be mixed reviews on this one again, has anyone seen the data sheet on 907 yet?
There should be a section (or a poll) in the after where the BIOS's are posted for user feedback of which ones seem to be working or have PERCEIVED issues. After reading the thread, it sounds like everyone who has tried the 0903 and posted about it seems relatively happy. All of the other data is consolidated, sounds like a good add.
BTW, I have the board and all components except for a CPU which I'm waiting on someone to send me  This will be temporary until the E8500's come out! I'm looking forward to tweaking this bad boy.
To further, does anyone have problems sometimes on reboot still getting the "DET DRAM" POST error, or sometimes after the post reset double boot, the board will reboot 1 more time and you hear like a cap discharging then you gotta dump value ram into a DIMM?
Anybody care to help me out here? I think I have this thing pretty stable, but it seems that I get some lags/handups in UT3 after playing for a bit and superPi has some issues is I run calculations back to back too soon after on another. I've tried a few different setting and they all seem to give me the same result. Here's what I have now.
Does anything jump out at you? Thank in advance.Code:Extreme Tweaker

I'm at 3.0Ghz now. Checking core temps while running Prime95 give me 86-86-78-78 and Speed Fan gives me 75 for CPU and 63 for all 4 cores. Is that too hot for the Q6600 G0? I think it's suppose to run a lil bit cooler. I'm on the process of testing right now and I'll let it run straight for at least 3 hours b4 moving up further.
where is the maximus loading screen after updated to bios 0907?
Still there!?
If you haven`t disabled it in bios....
I'll try that. I did have the cpu pll set to 1.5ish and I saw somewhere that auto might stabalize it but I never messed with the GLT settings.
Is there somewhere where I can get a definition of what all these voltage settings are? I'm sure the engineers in the house know this stuff, but I'm guessing this board needs most if not all of it's voltage settings hard set in order to be stable at high OCs and I really don't know what these settings do.
If you don't see it it might have been removed, is that an issue ? Will flash next week or so to 907 if I get more end user reviews...
No, I saw it after flashing to 0907, I`m sure.
Option can be enabled or disabled in "Boot Configuration" and the setting would be called "Silent Boot" directly translated from german.
Has anyone had a major problem getting this to post, I have a cmos error every boot and the only way it will go further is if I hit F2 to load defaults,(with a preloaded drive it will boot to OS and run fine.) if I hit F1 and load setups defaults and save, exit or make any other changes it still has a cmos error. the lcd post screen always says EN SETUP. I have tried moving the ram around, using only one stick, raising voltage to 2.0 and 2.1 and nothing, I need some help or a kick in the right direction been playing with this thing for a few days.
asus maximus formula se bios 903

My first post :-)
Just got an Asus Maximus Board and an Intel Core Duo Extreme QX9770 (3.2GHz at 1600FSB). And yes, the board does support 1600FSB.
The problem is that I only have 4GB 667MHz (with heatsink, 4-4-4-12) Team Elite RAM. At default setting the board automatically overclocks the RAM to 800MHz cause it sets the FSB to 400MHz to achieve 1600MHz.
I have tried lowering the FSB (which also lowers the CPU speed because I didn't adjust the ratio). I have tried 200, 266, 333 and 400 but nothing works.
I will be able to boot to Vista but when I run Super PI or MemTest I get an error.
Get a new CPU :p:
Get some new RAM. :p:
But seriously Motobuddy, with that chip I'm guessign it's a fsb and/or voltage problem. Don't use auto for either. hard set them to your chips specs and try that. Also, a question like that could be more easily answered if you posted your bios settings using the provided template.
And atomica. You probably need new RAM. If your RAM can't OC to 800, there's little you can do or should with that chip. Besides, what are you doing with that chip and RAM that slow? Get some new RAM.
just to share with u guys... i was testing my ram with Transition Booster Enable (0), when using the top 3 memory dividers, i m getting a lot of error or cold boot, when i tried the 4th memory divider i forgot the ratio (3:4 or 4:5), i dont have any cold boot issue anymore....i tested my ram for about 2 hrs without any coldboot, it got me ddr1150 4-4-4-10-4 with PL 6 shown in memset, using the top 3 dividers, i wont be able to reach DDR800 with Transition Booster set to Enable(0), i believe this is due to the tight PL. Dont know if u guys experienced this or already know about this, i m suspecting that this mobo has issue with my ram. Plz respond if u have the same issue, thanks :)
I've just "upgraded" from 802 to 907. Found out the hard way that saved settings from 802 don't work in 907. Oh and yea, you can't back flash from 907 to 802. tried everything down to AFUDOS, no luck. Says bios is older version, end of story...
But would someone please please please tell me why I cant get this board to run at 1T command rate???
I'm at fsb = 404, mult=10 transaction booster disabled (0), (only way it will boot), static read control disabled. 4-4-4-10 which is real conservative at these settings. memory passes all memtest86 tests, but cpuz still reads 2T command rate (set to 1T in bios). Setting to 2T or auto in bios gives identical bandwidths in everest and sandra.
TIA
PS
Posted to other MFSE thread as well.
may i know what is the most stable divider, pls?
Hey all, great thread. I just got a new setup (see sig) and im dying to overclock my q6600. It idles about 25C with the stock cooler at 100%. It's Go stepping aswell. However i'd just like to know how often these cpu's fail for no apparant reason (i.e not my fault.) Am I taking any real risk of being left out of pocket if i void the warranty? Also im having problems setting my BIOS to boot my ram at pc2-8500. I tried changing the default setting from auto up to the desired level in the bios and sometimes it boots and works fine for hours (once it gets past boot) but half the time it locks up and wont get past the 'Gamers Republic' splash screen. Am i going to need to adjust the FSB or something in order to get this RAM to run stable at his rated speed? Also I can't see any settings to increase the voltage on the RAM or is this automatic? This is all happening on a maximus formula btw. Im on a septemberish bios revision i think.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer. (Self confessed noob, particularly in the OC department)
1. Update to BIOS 0903 or 0907
2. Do you have the LCD Poster hooked up? I'll bet it's hanging on DET DRAM.
3. Up your RAM volts. The board defaults to 1.8-1.9. PC2 8500 usually needs 2.0 minimum to boot right.
4. CPUs (especially these new Intels) don't just randomly fail for no reason. It's very rare to have a chip just "die".
5. You can disable the splash screen (ROG logo) in the BIOS so you can see where it's hanging, but the LCD poster is better for seeing what the issue is.
Well i have found 907 to be the best one yet, i could not get stable on 400 fsb no matter what votages i used before, now i can get stable on 412x9 with only around 1.47 vcore and it just want to keep going, but my idle temps are around 35c and 52c after playing games, which means that the cores are at aroung 71-72 degress which im a bit worried about, i think im gonna lap the proccessor to see if it makes a difference:)
Hey thanks for the voltage advice. Seems to have worked. I set it to 2.2v (thanks to atomica for help on finding the setting) which i believe is the rated voltage for these modules. I'd just like someone to take a gander at my cpuz memory readings just to see if all looks well. The rated timings for these sticks are 5-5-5-15, i havent touched the timings in bios yet however. I did update the bios to 0907 as advised.
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/2485/cpuzramfa1.jpg
Is having them in slot 1 and 3 the wrong thing to do?
Thanks again for the fast responses.
Thanks for that advice I set the volts to 2.1 seems fine. I set the timings to
5-5-5-15 and all seems good :)
Any advice as to other bios settings i can do to increase performance before overclocking and voiding warranties? (Pretty much everything is at defaults except whats been mentioned so far.)
trying to get 8x400mhz prime stable, 1 core allways faults after a hour. My guess is that I try with a too low vcore, now its cranked up to 1.28v in bios, 9x333mhz went fine with 1.2v .
I would up the volts a notch or 2,
On bios 802 my q6600 required 1.42 volts for 425x8
Also you might want to up the PLL alittle
Hi all
I build my first system couple of weeks ago and now started overclocking.
I can do 400 x 9 and 450 x 8 with settings on first page.
Problem is I can’t set my Vcore to manual figure. Anything I’m try, can’t even boot in
BIOS. But if I set Vcore on auto all fine. I flashed BIOS to 802 from retail and still no luck. I may leave as it is, but my temps is too high (core 0 and core 1 goes over 70-72 under Prime95).
Thanks and sorry for my English.
P.S. I already lapped my TRUE and processor and temps still high.
Got 5-6 C difference between Core 0, 1 and Core 2, 3
Post your settings
Hello
did a swiftech apogee gt or universal fit on the maximus?
somebody know that?
got my Q6600 to run @ 8x400mhz with vcore set to 1.28v in bios (prime stable 6h, stopped it myself). getting 9x400 would require 1.4+ I guess.
its a tad snug but it fits
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...r/DSCF0183.jpg
EXACT same loop order I have. Looks good, nice install.
Are you using the stock clamps on the NB? Keep an eye on those, mine leaked with the pressure from my MCP655. I just used tie wraps and haven't had an issue since.
Seems reservoir to pump tubing is kinked :(
Gonna try to build a loop in my Antec P160 next week with only Nb and CPU in the loop with 2 rads ( one 120mm and a dual 120mm )
Keep you guys posted
no kink sharp bend but no kink, those smart coils are a pos and got very brittle after awhile so they were removed. I do use the stock clamps on the fuzion block with small tie wraps for extra security.
Going to redo the loop tomorow, adding 2 MCW30's. might lengthen the res to pump tube to remove the sharp bend. Doubt its affecting performance but I looked at your cube mod and I must say its rather interesting, so advice from ppl more experienced than I is most welcomed.
We need some more references for over 450x8 and 400x9. I'm stuck going above 3.6. If someone would be so kind as to help a guy out so that I can see what you are doing it would be great.
i just upgraded form a q6700 and i got proper temp readings with it but with the QX9650 i get stupid readings. i had the weird temps with bios 802 so i updated to 903 and no change. here is a pic at idle@ 3.5ghz
anybody else with QX9650 have this problem?
can someone make bios recomendations based on what chips they're best on.
ie. for xx50 dual core Core2 use bios___
for xx00 dual core Core2 use bios___
for xx00 quad core Core2 use bios___
for kensfield quad core use bios___
for Yorkfield quad core use bios___
etc.
Nothing unexpected really. I just like a solid, proven reference to start from. It seems like people have differing opinions on bios for this board, and it also seems that most people are quadcores so I wonder if one bios favors the quads over another.
This board has been nothing but problems for me, but i do like it a lot. I just have to be a bit more patient. After a clean install of xp I've figured out that my sound card problem must be a Vista 64 problem. Good to know, i guess. Also, I have 9x400 stable right now. I'd like to see if I can push it a bit further but it might not be worth it with my current setup. Just because my cooling can take more that doesn't mean I need to give it more. Besides, once I have a GPU in the loop, temps won't be so favorable. Also, I think the memory I have causes stability issues over its rated speeds. I'm looking into some new memory for my setup, but I haven't figured out what to get yet.
Although I do enjoy OCing and figuring all this out, I HATE not getting it right and not knowing why. :shakes:
Weird thing hapened yesterday, I upgraded latest forcewares to my 64bit Vista, and shutdown took forever.
Than it did not boot at all and no picture on screen, I tought what the hell.
I did CLR CMOS atleast 4 times and no difference.
Tried other GFX card, no difference.
LCD Poster showed that DET DRAM all the time.
Then I removed RAM´s, no differecne.
Then I tried those OCZ momory modules one by one, and one bootted fine.
Then I tried other and same thing GFX cards fan blowed 100% and no picture on screen.
I thought that other memory died.
But after few hours I tried them again both installed and everuthing worked fine.
I just dont understand what caused this and why?
I also lost photos from 4GB PNY SD card that was in USB card reader.
Changed from 4 x 1 OCZ to 2 x 2 GSKILL PQ8000
Finally able to get 8x450 with ease

Changing ram has dropped the volts I needed to put through the north bridge by a huge amount to be stable at this speed.
CPU is a G0 Q6600
just put together my asus max with 9650 and i cant even install an os on this thing :(
my rig is water cooled. and it saying the temps in thebios are 9c for the cpu... not sure if thats right as the orignal bios showed me 29c. i upgraded using the flash method and it went well. 0907 bios currently.
i trried every boot version of windows xp and vista i have and it always tells me the same thing.
" reboot and select propr boot device, or insert no boot media"
the bois detects all my hardware.
2x wdc wd740adfd-00nl ( raptor 74gb)
lite on dvdrw lg-2 ( lg lite on dvdrw)
hl-dt-st dvdvram gs ( samsung light scribe dvdrw)
wdc w7500aaks-00r ( 750gb wd )
8gb of ram at default 800
i just dont get why it wont be up windows. hell i even got an orignal vista cd and it still saays the same thing. i made sure that cd rom is the first boot. and still nothing... has anyone else had this problem,
the only thing iv done so far is update the bios so it correctly sees the9650
and of course changed the boot order. no matter why cdrw drive i try to boot from it gives me the same issue.
please help!!
p.s. everything is this rig is brand new.
Someone problems with the Ram´s? If so test @ default settings with memtest1.7. On my asus maximus is the ram controller damaged. Testet 4 brand new pairs of DRAMS. In dual channel mode 1 stick always errors. With one stick no errors. My board goes RMA after christmas.
cheers and
happy christmas to all
Did anyone find bios 0907 temp reporting a little to weird?
I've got e6750 (not yet OC) with thermarlright 120 extreme and in bios and asusprobe my temps are around 1 to 4 degree C. With asusprobe reporting sometimes 255 C. I've gone back to 0903 and my temps are around "normal".
So I'm interested in this:is this only my board or does somebody else have the same issues with 0907?
