hmm... pcb, power-connector placement, heatsink and cooler are looking somehow like the 2900 xtx... see here

THat thing looks like an industrial leaf blower. Heatpipes in the red look sexy.
Imagine how awsome this would look in crossfire with 4 Dice pots mounted and bubbleing :P

R680 runs COD4 really well
CES 2008: Another card spotted
If you put one R680 with two RV670s in the Phenom machine, you end up with some great performance in some modern games. We had the chance to see the R680, Radeon 3870 X2 out of the box, and at the same time we've seen one in the executives' hands.
The one in the box can render Call of Duty 4 at 2650x1600 resolutions at very playable frame rates, but we didn’t actually find out how good the scores were.
We can tell that the card is real, and that it should be out by the end of the month. We had pictures of it in November and it is the same one, just with a bit better drivers now.
Here is happy Arun with his baby.

R680 powers Intel's X48
CES 2008: Intel's gone wild
Intel is happy to share with the world that it has a good relationship with ATI, and that it is happy to support ATI's current and future products.
Those two companies put together a rather interesting setup that included the 9770 3.2GHz CPU from Intel, an X48 Intel motherboard and an R680 graphic card.
R680 is already known as Radeon 3870 X2, and it should be available later this month or early next month.
This is what they look like together, and even in Skulltrail Intel was happy to tell the world that it supports two RV670 cards; and that with the right driver it can even do four cards.

Agreed! Can't wait till we see what this beast can do.
Some foreshadowing. I wonder how much heat (watts) both cores and the PLX bridge will produce. ~250w? Wonder how EK and the other watercooling companies will make their blocks. Very awkward configuration.
Edit:
Oh man we are so close. Drivers look almost done, the product is done. Its time to give ATI some laxatives to push this out into the market.
cant wait till the end of the month now!! my x38 will be here thursday waiting for two of these :D and possibly a E8500 @ 4 / 4.5 gig :D
Not bad at all but i think ill keap my 8800Ultras and wait for R700 to roll back Radeon+AMD.
if the pic's about the next nvidia card turn out to be true (i.e. dual pcb) then the radeon 3870x2 got a massive advanatge due it being far easier to fit aftermarket coolers.
R680 is drawing quite a bit more interest than 9800GX2 is :D
You said 28 Jan... OK, I'll sleep till then :D
What is that supposed to mean. 2 RV670 is CF, Intel supports that since ages.Quote:

And: "two RV670 cards" = 3870X2. So Intel is "happy to tell the world that it supports the 3870X2? Duh! why not?
Now, "the right driver" being Intel chipset driver (for X48?) <--and X38 then? , or new Catalyst? <--CF already works with current Catalyst. So?
What a poor message.. what's it really saying?

Even if they priced this at $450 to compete with the pricing on the 9800GX2, it'd still be a good deal if the X2 is determined to beat out the GX2, and the possibility is there.
Lets hope that crossfireX driver brings some nice performance to the table.
Here is a post explaining more about it
Can't waiiiit!!!!
You gotta watch this video. R680 playing COD4 with AA at 2560x1600
Ballpark price range between $400-$500
I wonder if they will make an AGP version of THIS card? lol
i dont think so :) but its just me
if its $400 - $500 then its bound to be £400 - £500 :(
a cure for erectile dysfunction?
couldnt they have made it longer?
but seriously, it's just the sort of silly card that appeals to me...cant wait to see it in action. will it be as good as /better/worse than 3870 cf?
does it rely on same drivers as cf...is it identical to cf or just cf esque
non capisco questa carta di grafico
The card without the sticker is an engineering sample. I was allowed to take pictures of the retail version too. It has a nice Ruby sticker on it :)
http://www.pcgameshardware.de/?menu=...mage_id=756185
amd allowing pictures and priced at 400 -500$? if thats anything to go by then that card might actually be good and not a fail like r600 and phenom.
Although the ballpark price is a bit on the high side it's a sign that they have a competitive card. Only time will tell if thats true or not.
Side note:
Hasn't the 6600 GV-3D1 (2 gpus on one PCB) and 7850 GX2 slower then SLI in most games? If so, I wonder if this new iteration will scale similar to those?
Thanks
Do we have any other 2560x1600 score to make a comparison with? I honestly don't know if that's good, bad or average.
9500+ points on 2500x1600 all stock, wooot
thats exactly 2x 3070 in CF, so exactly what it should be ;)
^^ Thanks

any idea if 1 of these will run on a non crossfire board?
woot scores look ace.

17.4k in 06 non-overclocked is SMOKING for a single card. Remember that they used Vista, so the XP score will be higher.
How is difference from only one 3870? + 30%?
17.4 k is super, just to compare I get 17.5 in vista with OC 8800GTX SLi & QX6700 @ 3.67
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2867390
Good job ATI , let just hope for good CF drivers.
OK enough 3DMark crap, this card performs exactly as 3870CF, how it should be. No susprises here. Now we want game numbers! Does ATI have magical CF drivers for this card, or is the same as 3870CF too? That's the interesting question.
9573 @ 2560x160 @ Q6600 2.4Ghz is impressive.. that means a 3.6 GHz should be probably near 11k+ or more
But yes, I ant some game numbers!
The GV-3D1 does very well for a single slot AGP dual-gpu, although there are better AGP cards *now*:
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.c...id=1901&page=4
Lets remember folks, this round (R600), ATI has shown great scores in 3dmk0X (beating out faster cards), but in game performance has been deplorable (compared to its synth scores).
No it hasn't, it may have been slower then the competitor but most games are very playable with a little overclock.
Review
Did you read my post? I said deplorable COMPARED TO ITS SYNTHETIC SCORES.
I was just making a note that just b/c a has a higher 3dmk score, doesnt mean it will perform better IRL (gaming). This has been more true than ever with DAMMIT and the R600.
yep , 8800GT/GTS also scores higher than 8800GTX/Ultra and in games they are not better
Higher 3dmark score doesnt mean = better in games , we already know that
about HD3870X2 and 9800GX2 performance in Games will always depends of drivers support , same history like SLI/CF

That's not the reference card, it's the Unika one.
I wonder why ATI decided to leave the switch chip as it is, it wouldn't have taken long to redesign it for 90 nm, 65, whatever, and have TSMC to make it way smaller than it is right in that picture.
What's that huge chip in the middle??? Is it some kind of a magical solution that makes those dual GPU's work together as a "single" GPU so that it is always scaled in everything like a magic crossfire?
Because AMD buys it from a 3rd party, i.e. they have no rights to the design and cannot have TSMC shrink it for them.
As to why they went 3rd party is because they are planning on integrating the PLX into R700.
By knowing what he is talking about and doing research.
I just don't see how this is going to be better than the GX2 if it is only 2x3870's in CF... 2x8800GT's in SLi will outperform this.
Surely?
I mean all anyone can do is speculate but from what I have seen so far, it isn't that impressive (the X2).
As ever I will reserve my judgments until I see an X2 vs GX2 shootout.
True that 2x8800GTs will outpeform 2x3870s - by a little. But, the unknown is how well the onboard hardware x-fire performs vs. the hardware sli, that is, the hardware x-fire could get closer to the full power of two 3870s vs. how the GX2's onboard sli gets close to the full power of a pair of 8800s. ... or not.
That is not true...
CF HD3870 performs better than SLI 8800GT...
It scales MUCH better, as in it is pretty common to see 60-90% gains.
Its not like we haven't seen these before...

BTW- there is a button down in the lower righthand corner named multi-quote, so you can quote more than one post in your post.
It is a newer model though... We have seen these before but not this particular model.
This looks more like a tie between 8800gt sli and 3870 x-fire than a clear leader: http://en.expreview.com/?p=53&page=4
If this is any indication of what to expect I can see why many are excited:

Hey, I'm going to buy two of the 3870 x2's rather than 2x Gx2s, thinking they'll be better. (And I have 2x 3870s rather than 2x 8800gt's.) But, I'm trying to be realistic. It's not completely clear which will be better. I'm betting ATI - though - for the 1st time in a while.
The performance of the 3870X2 and 8800GX2 should be pretty close to each other, but in my opinion the ATI design is much better. A single PCB versus 2 PCBs. I'll take 1 in a heartbeat, especially if you want to go subzero. Have fun making pots for that Nvidia card. :ROTF:
Hell you could probably do 2 HR-03's on the 3870X2.... only you'll take like 5 slots up lol
when will I be able to buy this card?
Beginning of next month

Glad i was broke during the holiz so i couldnt get the normal 3870's. 2 of these babies coming my way asap.
CF scales better but the cards aren't as powerful so they don't perform as well.
Expreview link shows a close result, no real winner. It does not test many titles either.
DriverHeaven have a more complete review with a vast selection of games.
Out of those games only 2 worked well in CF, COD4 and Crysis - both of these games return higher frame rates with sli.
GoW, Tiger Woods, Quake Wars, Oblivion, Lost Planet, World in Conflict, Dirt, HL2EP2 either didn't work or gave poor results.
This is why I am sceptical about any dual card. Mixed results.
I game @ 1920x1600 with AA/AF on so which ever card cranks out the highest frame rate/IQ across a broad spectrum of games with these settings will end up in my rig...
Only 2/4 weeks to wait now for both of these cards to be released, not long at all :)
the cpu score of the gtx's is more than 2 times as much. But still the 3870x2 is faster. cause one sm2 its 35-40% more powerfull and in sm3 its more like a 85-90% wich is realy impressive.
If you pair this beast up with a york @ 4.5(wich is do-able on air) you'd have a nice 24/7 game rig.
Seems like the GTX would score roughly 7000 with a stock E6600...
Sorta find it amusing that there is 8gb of ram in that system, hopefully they have a reason for all of that.
CPU is really holding back that 3870 X2
that hdr/sm3.0 difference is amazing
Can anyone do the GTX benchmark at the same CPU speed which is E6600 at 2560x1600?
using vista ?
using only 700mhz ram ?
using only 350fsb ?
300 cpu-points really aren't that much.
Anyone know if two of these will work on a p35 board with two x16 slots, like the mars for example?
for what ?
Gaming ?
you can't be serious.
i think he meant so the cpu won't bottleneck it.
i'll probably just grab one, it was more out of curiosity.
With 2 3870s in CF using a Q6600 you get 15800.

using 2 dies on one PCB vs 2 video cards bridge together, both using windows vista. I suspect more will be gained when you go from 2 separate CPUs to dual core solution. The more efficient the design the more performance should be had. Hopefully when reviewed the X2 will show a boost over CF solution. However, you have to be mindful that these 2 benchmarks run the CPU at 3.0 and 3.3. Rumor has it that the RV670 was updated since it's release but there is no confirmation on that.
That first Q6600 is overclocked to 3000Mhz, the second to 3330Mhz. Not a valid comparison.
3dmark06, 1280x1024 default. Windows Vista.
Q6600 number 1=2997 Mhz; score = 4277
Q6600 number 2=3330 Mhz; score = 4764
Well ok, that's to be expected.
2 x 3870 in crossfire:
SM 2 = 6195
SM 3 = 7609
a single 3870X2:
SM 2 = 7035
SM 3 = 8134
Simply because the CPU is slightly oc'd you wouldn't get such boost in SM performance in crossfire.
This card performs better than 2 x 3870 in crossfire.
NO BOOST AT ALL
its samething as 2x HD3870 CF :

But you guys mean that the difference is huge in crossfire? Ok, i can't comment on that... just show me the figures, i believe you!
Oh btw: from the two reviews, the crossfire setup uses Cat 7.11, the other 7.12 (?) or a 8.1 beta(?)
