I'm thinking of buying this board. Everyone seems to like theirs. I'm replacing my 965s Dark DFI. My board's been really unstable just recently. Is this the King of overclocking boards under $150? or should I wait and get this?

I think you cant beat this board priced @ 120 and 100 dollars after main in rebate.
Seems like it doe overclock pretty well since revision 1.1 based on reviews from tomshardware and anandtech.
Well personally I only got to test E6600 dualie and Celeron 420 and It seems like it requires less vcore than my P5N32-E SLI did. Perhaps it is due to vdroop. I do not know about its overclockability on quads since I sold my q6600 NIB and never got to test it.
overall I am quite happy with this board for the price. My favorite budget board since P4C800 which i bought for 110 back in 2005 fall :)
My board came with bios 1.1 and it's all I have used. I had no problem hitting 500 fsb. I've ran e6600 and q6600 with no fuss. Only problem I encountered was running ram @1:1.125 divider. AFAIK, there is not a bios fix for it yet. Not sure why no one likes 1.1...:shrug:

1.1 won't work with wolfdales that are due this month, not a problem if you already have an Intel chip, but a big problem if you don't.
I'm trying my luck with MSI support team to have a 1:1.1 divider in any of those bioses. I'll let you know if it's possible.
Can anyone measure the pwm mosfett cooler mounting hole spacing for me??? I'm currently looking for a waterblock to fit it.....

Rev 1.2 for the board is out. It has been confirmed by MSI Germany forums. Not much difference compared to 1.1. Btw, I tried the new Dual Core Center and it's working.

Rev 1.1 is definately better than 1.0. More capacitors and the new jumper FSB overclock. Hardware wise 1.2 and 1.1 is almost identical. I don't think 1.2 will overclock much better.Quote:

What can i say?, Installation was smooth!, i didn't have a problem.
-My TT Golden Orb fits well, OCZ Reapers too.
-Came with BIOS v1.1 and supported C2D E6550 out of the box.
-Good options in BIOS.
-Windows XP installation in 15 mins.

For those of you who attempt to update the BIOS with the Windows Utility provided by MSI, you have to disable something in the BIOS first (i dont remember right now). It is in the manual.

I was benching and testing at default CPU speeds (2.33). Cuzz i was finding max GPU/Mem clock on my card first, I have to re-do my pencil volt mod.

I just ordered the P35 Neo2-FR, and I am planning to get the E8400 when it releases. I've heard the board comes with BIOS 1.1v, and the Wolfdales are supported since BIOS 1.6v. Here's the problem, will BIOS 1.1v work with the E8400 and atleast boot to allow me to update the BIOS or do I need to have an older cpu in to allow me to update the BIOS before hand....?

Why don't you try getting yourself a retail 65nm Celeron 420 ( C2D architecture based ) for like 38-43 bucks and use that with this board until next black friday sales or wait for the price to drop. The boards are shipping with different revisions and different BIOS versions, on the german forums a lot of people were getting rev1.2 boards with the v1.4 BIOS this past week.
The one I got 2 days ago was a rev1.2 with a v1.5 BIOS, others are getting rev1.1 BIOS. Officially none of these BIOS support Wolfdales you need BIOS 1.6, but I'm not looking for full Wolfdale support, I just wanna know if my BIOS can boot me into DOS with a wolfie so I can flash it, and according to the Anandtech link below there does seem to be some kind of Wolfdale support from v1.4 and upwards. The only way you'll know for sure is when you, or someone else, buys a Wolfdale and trys to boot it with a BIOS that is lower than v1.6

if anyone wants to know the BIOS version of their board before hooking it up, there's a small sticker on the actual BIOS chip telling you the BIOS version, you need a magnifier to read it.

Good luck in your overclock. This board should have no problems doing FSB500 and above. I'm doing FSB440 everything on lowest voltage. Try downloading the latest Dual Core Center from MSI's website. The latest version worked for me. Remeber to install .NET Framework 2.0.Quote:

I'm having bad temps, 37C Idle at stock clocks/volts, with an after market hs/fan + artic silver 5 + ambient temp = 22C.

I guess 37 Idle is fine, i have CPU Vcore at 1.35V and NB at 1.45V.
Running prime for 25 mins at 3.2GHZ i get 62C load and a peak of 66C (while priming)
Are these temps good for that speed and voltage?. I would like to go 500FSB to get my memory to run at 1000mhz. Also, notice i'm having zero Vdroop :)

not great results on early retail wolfdales, at least not for this user, so maybe now I won't buy one in the first week until I can see what they really clock like ... reality sux!

there are 2 mounting holes for the pwm cooler, I re-measured the distance between those 2 holes from center to center It's exactly 6.6 cms, I measured from the back of the board.
I also measured the northbridge cooler mounting holes, again there are 2 mounting holes, the distance between them is exactly 5 cms measured center to center, from the back of the board.

I went back to BIOS 1.1, very stable again.
The main problem was that i received the wrong memory modules :(
I ordered these ones: OCZ2RPR8002GK supposed to be DDR2 800 at 4-4-4-12.
But i couldn't do those timing, even ramping up the voltage, then i see Everest showing them as "OCZ2RPR8001G" at 5-5-5-15... oh well
ocuk prices are always silly thats why i am waiting for scan to get their stock as they will be better priced.
when i power up my system, it shuts down within 2 seconds, and then start again and boots. I only have this above 3ghz, but 3.8ghz is rockstable. Someone else having this problem too?

Is BIOS 1.77 better than 1.1? regarding overclocking and stability.
Try upping the tRFC. Actually no difference between 1.1 or 1.77 if you set the correct voltage. Vdrroop is normal. Setting 1.3V in 1.1 = 1.35V in 1.77.Quote:

I have ~5 degrees celsius hotter temps on this board than my old Asus P5N-E SLI board with same CPU and settings. Does anybody experience the same?
Just so everyone with this board knows, the onboard voltage sensors are crap, and vDroop is awesome.
With 1.48v selected in BIOS, I get 1.495 measured on my DMM and 1.485 running OCCT.
Speedfan reads 1.46 idle and 1.43 running OCCT.
Does that mean no Vdroop when measured with your DMM? Your speedfan readings are quite good. Same with mine. 0.02V lower when idle and 0.04~0.05V lower when under oladQuote:

Hello all. I'm on the Platinum, but they're the same.
First I'd like to say I really like this board given the first impressions I've had with it. It took my old E6600 which topped out @3.5Ghz on Asus P5W DH to 3.8GHz. I am now using this board with my new 8400 and as most of us are aware, booting @4.5Ghz is not a big deal with this combination. Mine is currently Orthos stable 11hrs@4.1 and 4.3G, for whatever that's worth, albeit with a little of a high idle temp.
Having said that, I'd like to iron out a few things in order to be on the same page with every one about this board.
Here are my questions:
1. Still works with E8400 on Bios v.1.1, would upgrading Bios help with further performance and/or lowering temp?
2. This is sort of a comment: In terms of PCIE Frequency, when I set it to 101...the Sound card doesn't work. Resetting to 100 works. Just in case any one has this problem.
3. 5xSATA is a little bit lacking.
4. Setting a lower multi does not work. After setting a multi of 8, or 8.5, the board boots into Windows with a multi of 9 using the same FSB. Is this observed elsewhere?
5. Here are the voltages for my OC, please feel free to suggest any adjustments that might allow better results:
FSB@456x9=4.10Ghz
Vcore=1.3875
Memv=2.2
VTT FSB Vcore=1.25
NB voltage=1.5
SB I/O Pwr = 1.5

The system ran Orthos Small for 11 hrs, Memtest passed @ this setting.

2. I have no problems with 105 or even more. Actually there is little or no performance benefit by upping PCI-E speed. Maybe new BIOS could solve the problem. Try the latest BIOS or stick with 100mhz :)
3. Actually the total no of SATA is 7. Two ports from ICH9-R are used as external sata. Ideal for external RAID setup. Do you actually need 5x500GB? :)
4. Did you turn of C1E and Speedstep? If not, mobo will automatically change the ratio. I have no problems running at 6, the lowest ratio.
5. I running on a different CPU but on that FSB speed(456) my system and RAM is stable with these voltages.
RAM : 1.85V (5-5-5-12)
VTT : 1.2V
NB : 1.275
SB I/O : 1.6
SB Core : 1.05V
IMHO, chipset doesn't need extreme voltages below FSB 500.
6. Did you enable Fast Boot? Maybe you have a lot of device. Try unplugging your USB devices and check the boot time.
Your temps are pretty high for 24/7 usage. I suggest you lower the Vcore and speed. Maybe 4Ghz would be ideal because no much difference in games after C2D passes 3Ghz. If you are doing encoding, should have got a quad.
