Damn... I have an aircooled 65nm quad, so max 24/7 cpu clock is arround 3.5 - 3.7GHz. So a high FSB is a must for me.
I am doing fine on P45 (Asus Maximus II Formula), but now, since I received some nice DDR3 mem, I would like to go to a DDR3 board, but need, of course, to keep a high fsb.
Asus don't have a nice P45 and DDR3 combo, so if RE can't do it, I will have to look at some Gigabyte P45 DDR3 combo, but I didn't want to go Gigabyte... Always Asus here.
This is what Maximus II Formula can do with quads, for 24/7 use...

I see QX uphere, so you must have unlocked multiplier? I think it's up to 12x? I don't see any problem with this CPU, your MB and RE.
Nice results on the Maximus II Formula  - looks like you would gain around 2000Mb/s read speed on DDR3 at 475 bus just comparing with my Everest scores.
I think the RE is widely recognised as the best for high FSB speeds and like you I tend to always build with an Asus Mobo. How about water on the CPU and going to the next multiplier ? - not sure what multi's are available on your processor.
Yeah, thanks for the info rob2k. I will probably stay on air.
I am looking at some DFI mobos now too... I think I will research a bit more, before defining my DDR3 mobo.
Thanks anyway..

having a hard time to get IBT PASS @ 485 FSB.
necessary CPU VTT rise significantly from 1.2v (471FSB) to 1.32v.
Hard locks (mostly) / BSODs / reboots occured when attempting to run IBT when I leave all CPU GTLs in auto.
With a slight tuning of CPU GTLs IBT does run but only 80% hit rate (8 out of 10)
So that means still has a way to go...I guess to run 500 FSB a minimum of 1.4v VTT will be a must...
OK Back to track.
I've made a fresh start from where I begin.
CPU GTLs all on AUTO
NB GTL +40mv
vNB 1.577v
VTT 1.4v
CPU Freq. 477x8
vCore 1.2v
Skews:
CPU Skew: 400ps
NB Skew: 200ps
New discovery: Too much CPU to NB Skew delay (300ps or above for my case) will cause lockups.
EDIT: NB STRAPS WILL AFFECT NB GTL TUNING AS WELL...GUYS PLEASE HELP TO TEST WITH DIFFERENT STRAPS / GTLS :)
For my example, using 468FSB for testing
200 STRAP need +40~50mv to pass IBT, while 333 STRAP need +70mv using the same VTT, vNB, CPU GTL
Hi all,
earlier i had a E8600 on my board and all went perfect even hit a 500x10 fsb with my dominators 1800-7-7-7-20 t1
but now i hve a mountian of problems with my Q9550 :-(
I cant get my memory run @ stock speeds it only will post and boot if i use the CPU level up uttility in the bios ?
If i use manual settings it even not post ??
Is there a problem with this board and the Q9550's ?
sry for bad language (from Belgium) ;-)
gteetzzz
Interesting with different GTL at different straps.
I´m working with a E8400 C0 at 475, Corsair 2x1 at 1900 777 21 1N Strong tRD6 strap 333 and I found out that strap 200 and 400 give me slightly less performance then strap 266 and 333 and of 266 and 333, 333 give me slightly better performance.
Setting right now
CPU GTL0 +40
CPU GTL0 auto
NB GTL +40
CPU Freq. 475x8,5
vCore 1.43125
LLC disabled
PLL 1,50
VTT 1.20
vNB 1.59
DRAM 2,16
CPU Skew: 300ps
NB Skew: 200ps
Working to get down DRAM, NB and VTT volt.
Prime95 blend freeze or reboot with vtt 1,10, nb 1,59, ok with vtt 1,20, nb 1,59.
LinX 50 loop ok with vtt 1,10, nb 1,61, error somewhere between loop 35-45 with vtt 1,10, nb 1,59.
HCI design Memtest ok with vtt 1,10, nb 1,57.
So with vtt 1,12-1,20, nb 1,57-1,59, should be stable, then I have to bring down the DRAM volt.
NB GTL +40 seems best for me.

I Use the 1003 BIOS
It is strange because with my e8600 everething was ok but now with the Q9550 It su*** all the way ....
Sorry Gullo... OC ist more than just copying some Bios-settings !
OC only really works in that way that you have to make yourself the work and try´n test !!!
It would have a great benefit if you also start to read "How-to"´s ... cause only if you really know what causes which single setting, you can really oc effectively !
...
And then you would know that a setting for a DualCore can NOT work with a QuadCore CPU.
anybody doing any Dry ice or ln2 phase cascading on this I think once I put my order through for my I7 rig im going to wreak a rath on this board I have my liquid cooling setup right now which is helping this hot running E8600 at 4.5 for 24/7 use.
also could people post their 24/7 clocks people post clocks all the time but I want to see what your running 24/7 no bs im sure the 8600 on water can run 4.8 24/7 im thinking 5ghz 24/7 is a really narrow gap.
Hi guys,
Just to double check the best RAM to use for this board is as below:
1) Cellshock Blacks - Don't know the part number. If anyone knows can you please detail the specifics and possibly a website link
2) G-Skill PI - G.Skill 4GB (2GB x 2) PC3-12800 DDR3 PI 7-7-7-18
3) Corsair 2GB Dominators - Corsair TWIN3X2048-1800C7DF 2GB (2x XMS3 1GB) PC-14400 (1800MHz) DDR3 RAM, 2x240-pin DIMMs
I tried my 2x2gb Corsair Dominators C8DF and it seems the RE hates them with a passion - BSOD even if running all auto and at 333 FSB with a Q9650. Minor voltage increases in DRAM help very little in Prime Blend although BSOD followed in about 5 minutes.
Is it me or do these boards prefer Micron based ICs more than Samsung ones?
Thanks guys
what you guys think:

Hey quattro can you boot into windows with 510FSB/9x multi? If so what voltage?
Quattro, nice clocks my friend! Did you set TJ max to 100ºC in Coretemp?
Try 7-6-5-16 timings, that should give some more bandwidth.
first of thanks for all your replies .
sorry mate i still cant boot at 500fsb but im getting there slowly

yes but you have to trust me i dont have screen shots or anything :) , Prime 20 hours small FFT & OCCt 1 hour & Linx 20runs .

no its set to 95c, should i change it ?
i cant get it to cl7 no matter whateven at 2.1v ! i regret buying this ram its a pain to work with .
Yes set it to 100ºC, your temps will show 5ºC higher but are still very good.
you are right in my screen shoot above Everest temps about 5c higher .
Np thanks Quattro. And good job on your o/c so far. Also you have one of the better Q9650s i see ;)
believe me mine is an average batch iv seen much much better ones here at XS .
FYI for anyone that's going to try, the Thermalright HR-05 SLI/IFX when used on the SB (Southbridge) on this board will not allow you to install a double wide graphics card. I installed the HR-05 SLI/IFX and realized the screw that goes through from the bottom of the board sticks up tall enough to hit the underside of a graphics card, such as a GTX 280/4870 X2.

Any suggestions for a SB heatsink? I'm looking at the Enzotech CNB-S1L (fanless), but the spacings on the push-pins don't go straight into the board. What I'm thinking of doing is filing off the "arms" on the CNB-S1L and using 3M 8815 thermal tape to secure the copper heatsink to the SB chip.
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=22980
This tape is the same thermal tape used on Enzotech's BMR-C1 copper MOSFET heatsinks. Performance PC's sells a 2"x2" square of this tape for $2.95. Anyone think this will work, or have any alternative ideas?
Thanks.
enzotech low profile
Drill a hole and use isolation tape
Just kidding, any low profil cu heatsink will do the trick.
Do you think the 3M 8815 thermal tape will be sufficient to hold the Enzotech CNB-S1L heatsink on the Southbridge chip? I have to say this tape seems very "grippy" with the BMR-C1s I've got. I don't have much confidence in the push-pins, especially when they have to sit at an angle going into the board.
Why dont you just cut the screws shorter on the top, and use nuts instead of those tall ones that came with the heatsink, come on its a easy fix.
Here's what I did with the other mounting nuts -
RE cooling replace
It's kinda hard to see but I used the J hooks.
Sounds like the CNB-S1L is the answer then. How do you attach the CNB-S1L to your Southbridge? Do you use the push-pins or are you using some other method? My options are thermal tape, push-pins and Artic epoxy.
For the Northbridge (NB), I'm going to use a Noctua NH-U6 fanless. I'll have a medium-speed Panaflo blowing a lot of air into the case sitting at the front of the case. I'll have the same type of fan at the rear withdrawing air out.
It's odd as your board looks very similar to my own, referring to the copper heatsinks at the NB area, the Enzotech MST-81's and NB heatsink. It is a little difficult to see the hooks you used in that photograph.
Also noticed, your Enzotech MST-81's, did you use something other than push-pins to mount them? It looks like you used a similar M3 thumb screw as the HR-05 uses.
Hi Aln688, the hooks should have came with the heatsink like in the middle of the picture below.......
Attachment 93348
just place the hook end over the fixing brkt and tighten the nuts from the underside of the board. Should save you some cash
Hello Rob2k, Happy New Year! Shouldn't your handle be Rob2kIX? Just joking.
That's odd, I never had hooks in my package and I never had the same brackets are in your picture, I only had a straight bracket and a slightly bent one at either end, which I couldn't use as it wouldn't go over the screws.
I've already ordered the CNB-S1L, but thanks anyway. When I get it I'm going to try and file off the "arms" and make the heatsink a perfect square, then apply the 3M 8815 thermal tape on the back and stick it to the SB.
Certainly a lot of copper on this board now... :)
Happy New Year to you too .... thought you had an extended Christmas hols :D
Guess they must have removed the hooks for cost saving !, the thermal tape should work well but as the SB chip is smaller than the CNS-S1L it might be worth leaving the legs on at first to test the tape or future use on another board. Your build is looking good
This are 3.8Ghz.
I haven't booted to windows at 1900, I've only runed memtest boot disk, I'm at 1425 becaus I have 4gb, and I can't rum memtest without errors higher than 1600 with 4gb
BIOS 1003, loadline calibration calc error correceted in version 501

I wish! Christmas goes too quick!
Thanks on the board, I'll post a few photographs after I have everything installed, which should be next Tuesday or Wednesday. I also have to shorten the Panaflo cables, that means getting out my soldering iron and some female pins for the 3-pin plug, then sleeving the cable once done.
I could leave the legs on the Enzotech for now. I read in another forum someone left them on so he could attach a 40mm fan, but I'm aiming for less fans in my system. As a result of using the Noctua NC-U6 Northbridge heatsink, which will be fanless, I upgraded to 86 CFM medium-speed Panaflos front and rear (120x120x38mm) to have more air flowing through the system.
I really like that Noctua U9B CPU heatsink, small and compact, and with the medium-speed Panaflo attached to it (48 CFM), it should perform well. I'm selling the Noctua 92mm fan that came with it.
Just waiting on the Enzotech CNB-S1L, I've already got the Noctua U6. Once the Enzotech arrives I can may file it down, attach the 3M 8815 thermal tape, get the U6 installed and the U9B then the board is ready to be installed in the case.
For case fans, do you use rubber anti-vibration grommets, nylon screws, plastic push-pins, regular steel screws, what exactly? The other item I need to know, is if this board will accept 8GB successfully? Or does my overclock determine how much RAM I can use?
Thanks.
Hi aln688, usually I just use the steel screws that come with the fans but for the front fan on the drive bay I used these which isolate and mount the fan all in one. Others have 8Gb installed which should run fine but the 8Gb will likely control the FSB and CPU overclock - not much use having all that memory and running it below it's rated speed.
Hi Gullo92, the settings are mostly the same as what I have PM'd you before. The changes are switching to the 333 strap and reducing some voltages as shown in my sig. Please remember as explained before that settings do not just port over for numerous reasons.
I think Frank has the same CPU as yourself - try a combination of Frank's CPU and board settings with my memory timings as you say we have the same RAM. If you have difficulties for whatever reasons you need to back things off until you have a stable system or you spend hours and hours trying to find the best settings for your hardware configuration. Sorry but it is not always easy - this thread has lots of helpful tips from others suggesting ways of finding the best settings but experience in O/C helps - maybe you have set your target too high first time out.
something i just noticed yesterday: particularly bad vCore droop on 1001 BIOS.
Before, I had only run Prime and IBT on 1001 with LLC enabled (500x9) - no vCore issue.
For 450x9 and 450x9.5 without LLC, i get early restarts under load on 1001, using 24hr-tested Prime CPU clocks/vCores (0403 / 0501).
Can Prime ok by raising vCore 3 steps on 1001, so reported droop then stops at 0403 level.
anyone else see this extra droop on 1001 (and maybe 1003) ?

Need some advice regarding cooling HDDs in a Lian-Li rack. It is really necessary to cool two Seagate 7200.10 7200 RPM HDDs with an 80mm fan? I'm using this Lian-Li EX23NB HDD module here:
http://www.vadim.co.uk/images/ex23a02.jpg
While it seems a nice idea to blow air across the drives, these aren't Ultra 160 SCSI drives like I used to have, so I don't see the need. I've also saw a few Dell XPS machines with HDDs with no fan cooling them.
The only plus to keeping the fan is that cool air runs across the drive and into the CPU area behind it. I've already got a Panaflo medium-speed 86 CFM 120x120x38mm fan front and rear.
Thanks.

2. I have Corsair Dominators PC3-17066 2133 MHz 2x1gb set
3. Shall see if i still have it.. was kind of ocing for fun and it wasn't 100% stable..
but it wasnt complicated.. just 1.55v cpu and 1.55 for nb:D
Yep it's hard getting quads stable on this board. Very sensitive to gtl's - all cores have to run in perfect synch for stability. Till now only got perfect stability up to 450 FSB x8.5 with Q9550 CPU and G Skill 12800 Pi 2x2GB Ram - learning slowly but surely. Hope this attacment helps to start to understand cpu gtl and NB gtl settings.
Just got another 2x1Gb sticks of the same memory - it will be interesting to see how much I have to back off the FSB to get 4x1Gb stable. Will post when they arrive .............
fsb450x8.5=3825Mhz
Dram 1800Mhz 8-8-8-20 Performance level 7
8 Hrs plus Prime Stable (blend), 20 runs Intel Burn Test at max stress
3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage stable (no freezes, lock-ups or bsod).
Max CPU temp recorded were 78C using IBT and 69C with Prime. All tests backed up by pics if anyone interested.
Warning - These settings are for water cooled cpu and NB.

Next step is 471x8.5 stable (to break the 4Ghz barrier for a cheap quad CPU!) with the g.skills limited to 1570 as there is no way they will work above 1800 Mhz (will need better memory for that - wish I had the corsairs :D).
my quickest 32M time so far, though memory clock is too low really for best efficiency.
weather here is perfect (with heating off) to push for 5ghz this weekend. Sub-zero ambients in the cheap labs.....
also trying out higher max mem size at the moment (680)
vNB 1.52V / vDIMM 1.93V / vCORE not tested for min

EDIT: updates :)

initial value is high for this run but still ok.

i had to re-do my OS a week or so ago and this is as close as i can get to 11.00m / 4Ghz -
about a second slower than before. Mem timings as tight as possible for this kit.

I was having problems running stable with 1003 or 801. I went back to 501 and have not had a problem with IBT or Prime.
the best two of three 32M runs i did at this clock: passed all three, so possible i could have stayed
with same mem timings as 580FSB run
sub 9 minutes seems almost in reach now, but balancing this kit's clocks + timings with stability
starts to get difficult around 950mhz (595FSB / 5:8)
With luck the weather will stay cold enough this week - max CPU and NB temps were <30c with 32M load :D

used CDT for this one and went back to tRAS 12. Run speeds up at Loop 4, compared to above.

i don't know specific 1M tweaks - just ran this after my 32M.
Will try a higher clock for sub 9 seconds next time, but 32M is the priority.

Seems impossible to get it fully stable with the above combination of hardware and settings. Was almost there but with memory timings severely degraded which defeated the point of having cpu at 4ghz. Seems like 3.84 is the limit for stability for this cpu combined with good ram performance.
Will try higher fsb's with lower clock ratios......and scores more bsod's :D
back down to 7.5x multi to test again for lowest mem timings using 590-595FSB. I managed this run at 950mhz with almost same timings as the 571FSB run (tRFC 52 to 56) Trying to minimize the clocks needed for sub 9 minutes with 8.5x multi :D
i could only pass 32M by dropping max mem size to 580MB (from 680). Could be some cost to that but not tested yet.

Have you managed to get the GSkill Pi over 1800Mhz stable?
I can't seem to get mine stable over 1800Mhz...The furthest I have reached is 1869Mhz PL6 2T CL8 Prime 1 hour blend stable but IBT only passes 3 runs at max stress...oh and both Dynamic Read and Writes are both enabled
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/2118/9672vh9.jpg
lower frequency but different ram strap and it produces way better result need to play around with this
Oh I've got an L832B716 as well but recently managed to get it to 471x8.5 rock solid using 1.2125v unfortunately I've made a stuipid decision to sell it :( to bad...
The new Q9650 L826B97* is really sucks 4.275Ghz with 1.375v ORTHOS will still cause reboots (test run overnight...) planning for further ultimate overvoltage and 7/24 use and hopfully be an :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::b anana: and get it ***ed
Who say 500FSB on a quad is for P45 only? I'll show him :D

http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...stan/RE/du.png
you really need that? My settings are just for benching and cannot stand for 7/24 use...
BTW anyone with Q9550/Q9650 suffer from hard locks when trying higher FSB?
I've been getting frequent hard lockups (when press reset button need around 3 sec to shut down) anyone experienced? looks to me likely clock skew problem...
Whoohooo! I just need some cold now my water cooling isnt holding up this chip runs hot but I think It loves speed

the 5.1 was 1.49 volts with LLC enabled I tried LLC disabled with older bios and it didnt work currently using 1003 by didnt work I mean vdroop was horrid on 0503 If I had better ram sub 9 would be easier I wish I had those cellshock blues 1866 something that will do 2000 mhz at 7-7-7-20 would be sweet
