Would any of you guys buy the Maximus Formula again if you fried one?
I would definately.
Can people who reach 3.8+ with their Q6600 please post their BIOS settings? I cannot make mine stable above 3.780Mhz, although my cooling, mem, etc should handle more. I do believe the CPU can too.
Thanks
yeah i did flash to 0701, but the temps were really scaring me so I flashed back to 0505
I also got rid of the crappy OCZ golds and swapped in a new set of Corsair Dominator PC8500, but with my current 9x400 clock speed, and ram set to dd2-1066 my divider is 3:4 was there a problem with that divider ratio or should i be ok?
stress testing as we speak
Exact same thing here. Stock Idle 47C ???? And 47C load?! Weird.
No way...not with a PA160...
I dunno man either the figures are bogus or this board rons 20C hotter than anything I've put the G0 in.
What's weird is the first BIOS the temps were way too low...17C idle
CyberDruid, are you on the 0701 bios? someone mentioned that there's a temp bug in that bios, could be that?
stress testing with prime right now, core temp says my cores are 86-92* O.O!!! VID = 1.225v is that undervolted?
0701 here and my temps seem a little higher (4-5c) but i also moved my puter and didnt' realize it's right next to the heater. i think that is why it's up in temps.
My CPU should be idling at about 24-28C, right now its at 40C, I've tested these bug with 0505-0701 and they all have the same bug i guess.
I'm not to worried about the reported temps. As long as it stays below 75* full load. I've changed my auto voltages to what Probe was showing. Believe it or not my reported CPU temps under load went down about 3* and I haven't touched vCore. I only have cpuPLL on auto now. Those settings I posted I didn't test in Prime. Was just trying to successfully bench. It errored in P95 in seconds. :(. So I've done some more tweaking. Changing timings had almost zero effect. Changing clock twister to Moderate had some effect. Was 2 hr. prime stable. Last thing I've tried was DD2 Ref Voltages. I've not seen anyone mention changing those and I thought I was give it a try. I've changed all 3 to +10mv and I also noticed that under full load my VDIMM was fluxing by .02v. So I upped vDIMM by .02v and running another P95 blend test. I'll report back later with more info.
And if this board where to fry next week and I had to purchase it again I would say no. I would probably get the upcoming QuadGT X38/X48 board. I've always like Abit. This is my first Asus board in 10 years. Last Asus board was for Socket 7 233MMX. :)
hmm the 0701 damn buggy
was running 500x8 with rams at 1:1 4-4-4-8
when i flashed it to 0701 it worked flawlessly
today was doing some benching overclocking.. suddenly got det ram error
it didnt even allow my board to boot past 450fsb
reverted it back to 0602.. working fine.. but i still prefer 0505 as the rams sandra bandwidth was better..
anyone running 3:4 divider?

im coming from a P5K premium and i definitely dont regret it. The P5K Premium was a pain in the butt...
here's my Small FFTs running on prime95 64bit version 25.5 so far. I'm not having any trouble other than a high NB temp. my volts aren't fluxing at all.
I've finally built up my machine now, and I'm surprised (initially) at the vast stability improvements over the i975X, I haven't tweaked things much but just installed XP to test a few options with Prime.
Kup: is your modded 0701 SLIC BIOS meant to report a bad boot block error on EZ FLASH 2? I avoided flashing with it. The SLIC modded 0903 BIOS for my P5W64-WS didn't report any bad boot block errors during its flash, so that's why I'm asking.
P.
Hi notice in your sig;
How do I flash the BIOS without a floppy, answer USB.
Please would you give details how I can do that with this Mobo as I can't seem to find a boot from USB option, also I want to use the USB to put my Raid drivers on XP using F6 again I haven't a clue been trying for 2 full days now.
Thanks..

A* : Supports one module inserted in any slot as Single-channel memory configuration
B* : Supports one pair of modules inserted into eithor the blue slots or the black slots as one pair of Dual-channel memory configuration
C* : Supports 4 modules inserted into both the blue and black slots as two pairs of Dual-channel memory configuration
Should I understand from that, that for DDR2 above 800 (even PC2-9600), you need four modules. That is the board won't run fine with only 2 Kingston modules for example?
supports up to 4 modules should be the wording there I think.
2 modules in 2x1GB format will have no problems at all.
How to clear cmos?
Seems like that back button is not doing it :(
Aha, I did press that button about 4-5 sec only.
And clrcmos slider switch at motherboard is at factory postition. GFX card is in way and needs to be removed to gain access to that switch.
Just flashed in new 0702 bios, seems to be wotkin just fine.
Im gettting an annoying issue. I have Primed my rig for 12+ hours with no errors, but anytime I let it sit and turn it on it freezes. It does it like every single time right whent he XP logo starts to show up, but when I reboot its fine.
Any ideas? Im on BIOS 505.
I don't know about using a USB for driver loading in XP. What I did was use nLite to slipstream SP2 and the RAID drivers when I was using XP on a P5W DH. It worked great! Here's a link to a guide on the nLite web site that makes it very easy to set up http://www.nliteos.com/guide/.
On this build with the Maximus I'm using Vista x64 Home Premium and have been well satisfied with it. No drivers requred for RAID install.
Dividers are still broken.
only one that i tried was 4:5 and it hrew BSOD at loading vista.
My bad, the boot block problem can be avoided by using AFUDOS :yepp:
4:5 divider has been said to not work. Try 5:6. I'm using it. Although not completely stalbe it's good enough for me to use it. I'm hoping a new BIOS release fixes the current issues.
Man I installed this board last night and it wouldn't post with my Ballistix......I tried each DIMM in each slot individually, and I tried an el cheapo stick of Kingston. My memory is on the QVL too.
I spent TWO HOURS last night trying to get this memory to boot. It just hangs on DET DRAM every time. Reset the CMOS dozens of times. Tried different SATA ports just to make sure. This is insane.
I'm going to try to boot again when I get home from work, but I'm afraid I've given up on ASUS. My P5K doesn't really like this RAM much either, and won't always POST. It will eventually though. I'm going to get the Gigabyte model.
Anyone else running Ballistix? I have the DDR2-800 CAS4 sticks.
Hey guys, I know this isn't really a "help me with X" thread, but I've been getting some oddly high temps and whatnot on this board, figured this would be the best place to ask for some advice.
So far Everest has been the most accurate temp monitor for this board I've found, it gives the same core temps as Core Temp, but includes info for other stuff too. However, the NB, SB, and CPU temps all seem very high as you'll see in this screenshot. The voltages also seem really odd... Like, why is my 3.3v ALWAYS at 3.17? Is this just how C2D mobo's are? On my old socket 939 it was rock steady stable AT 3.3v. This is all cooled with air FYI, no water cooling, Q6600 for the CPU.
Anyways, here's a pic while running quad core Prime95 large fft's.

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/365/pi063915ze4.png
This is my temps and settings with the Original BIOS the board ships with.
My temps are now about 20C higher ?!
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7...cess030yh7.jpg
That's the set up...no way the temps should be 60C Load and 46C Idle...
cyberdruid, there's just no way a bios flash could screw up the temps THAT badly, i think its still a bug in the new bios. I bet your temps are still similar to what you had before. I'm having the same issue right now. original bios with 3.6Ghz OC was 35* idle with my cheapo thermaltake H2O cooling, but flashing to 0701 its now 56* idle
For that case when i have clear CMOS i have some cheap memory that can boot on 1.8Vdimm that is defaut after Clear CMOS since my Flex does not do so or not like that and are stuck at "DET DIMM". So i boot on the cheep crap and upped vdimm to 2.0V and shut of and put the Flex in and boot into BIOS, upped the Vdimm to the correct value and change the rest to correct value and then restart. But since you tried that i don´t know why it does not work for you.
And since you use 4 DIMMS the Gigabyte X38 is NOT better, it is way worse and a major flaw on that boards design that make 4 dimmuser very upset.
Thats why i trade the X38-DQ6 for Maximus SE and the problem with OC and 4dimms is gone.
anyone running 3:4 divider? I'm currently running that now, and memtest has been stable and error-free for 2 passes so I just assumed it should be ok
Anyone have any idea why XP freezes after every boot after being off for awile?
What BIOS are you guys running?
That happends to me also ! I found it frozen every time I wake up ... even leaving it in idle  I'm using the 0701 bios. (QX6850 + 2GB Mushkin PC9200).Quote:

With Transcend aXeRAM and Intel 6850 chilled with my old prommy overclocked with this mb my best 1M 8M 32M and old hexus_pifast timed. 1M 10.687s, 8M 2min 15.454s, 32M 10min24.563s and pifast 19.91
I feel your pain bro. I had to return two boards for the same reasons you’re describing.
I requested and received the third board tested to bios and it’s a keeper.
I believe Asus had some quality control issues with the first run. The first board would light up like Christmas tree (all led’s on red orange green) when powered up, the second ones led’s appeared normal (all green) both boards would not post to bios. I tried three different vid. Cards, two brands of mem, two power supplies and two CPU’s. All this was back a month ago early in the release and I was assuming the problems are behind them now so don’t give up yet if you need CF setup.
This board is rock solid, OC’s nicely and have gotten some descent scores. You could imagine the grin this setup gives me over the DDR1 939 system I’m upgrading from.
Well I didn't know that....no way I'm running the Gigabyte if it doesn't OC with 4 Gb well. This sucks man......I don't know why I can't boot with 1 DIMM of cheap DDR2-533. I'm going to buy another stick for booting with a pair of cheap RAM and see what happens.
Is it just me or are new boards becoming increasingly unstable when they're first released? It's almost as if they have NO QA department :shrug:
Just finish to look at this entire topic, such a big one!!! Screens I saw confirm that pci-ex frequency as read under setfsb is corrupted (always around 125Mhz) . The max oc I can managed with this board for the moment is 460*9 from the bios (12.250s under SPi 1mo) and 9*465 with setfsb, the screen is above:
http://i17.servimg.com/u/f17/11/11/8...h/superp10.jpg
I forget to put my ram at 44412... probably it will help to do less time
All my parameters except vcore (1.65v) and vram (2.14)v was on auto. I still have an error message (surtension cpu) since I put 1.65v in bios for the vcore.
Now I read the topic, I'll try some changes like PLL, FSBT, GTL ref etc... I'm on the 0505 bios
Hi, sorry i been away i got fed up of crap BIOS. So is there yet a clock gen for this thing?
Okay I just flashed back to 0401 and the temps are back to normal. I am running Super Pi 32M at 9 x 435 with some high volts and seeing mid 30C temps as I would expect.
There is something about the 0701 BIOS that is making very high temps for me.
RE: Freezing that is most likely AI Nap screwing up the computer. Uninstall the AI suite and it should be fine.
What settings please? I run the same, 4x1GB and the same clocks and timings and regardless of how long it can run prime for me it seems to still be unstable.
Also, I just had OCCT crash for me at completely stock. Like EVERYTHING set to stock, timings, voltages, settings, basically a boring slow system and yet OCCT still found fault within 5mins of running the ram specific test...? What could that be?
Hey guys, Do you think there is a difference between the SE and the Non-SE performance wise/OC wise.
Nop, within Windows. It's Prime Stable but it frozes when I left it in idle for a while.Quote:

My P5K wouldn't POST every once in a while, usually after a hard boot or wrong BIOS setting. I would have to try booting OVER AND OVER AND OVER until it finally posted. I wouldn't get any post beeps or anything.
I dunno man......that's two ASUS boards that have wasted a HUGE amount of my life within the last 4 months.
I would understand if I was using some sort of POS hardware, but my system is pretty close to top of the line.....there shouldn't be any of this nonsense.
BIG thanks :D :D :D :D
It works:D
Now to the next bit, I was about to build a Nlite disc with the SATA Raid drivers built in but is there a way to use the USB stick when pressing F6 to intall the SATA Raid drivers?
The reason is, tried the floppy way and used make disk utility but for some reason it says somethings wrong when installing from the floppy then near the end of installation it blue screens.
Thanks again.
I'm absolutely loving this board so far, a complete joy to tweak having used the AnandTech guide and jonnyrotten's settings as a reference.
Thanks Kup btw for your modded BIOS again.
I'm using a Q6600 at 400x9 with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and I've managed to get my Corsair 2 GB running 100% stable at 400 FSB to NB Strap, 4-4-4-12 timings and 5T tWR, DDR2-1066 with Ai Clocktwister on Strong and Transaction Booster enabled at 0.
The lowest I could bring the NB voltage for stable 400 FSB performance was 1.51v.
I haven't tried going lower with the latencies yet, but seriously, coming from an i975X board, this is heaven.
The CPU temperature bug with 0701 must be the same issue that occured with the P5W64-WS Pro BIOS, but I'm still puzzled why my NB seems hot, or is that suffering from the same bug? the ambient temps in the case are very low and I have 3 quiet 120mm fans literally pointing directly at the mobo.
I hope they'll sort that out soon because it really bugs me to see a totally bugged up temp report give me something of a 20 degrees celcius increase for no good reason :D
It's actually quite odd how many issues I'm seeing with this board have transferred over from the P5W64-WS Pro, even the overvolting issue is exactly the same, apart from the vdroop. DRAM is always subject to a 0.1v increase regardless of settings. Let's hope the BIOS readings are accurate for voltages, otherwise I'll be there throwing eggs at the nearest ASUS factory.
If anyone wants a list of my settings I'll post a few screenies.
Finally got my Maximus swapped in (after having it sit in a box for two weeks, and then testing random chips for another).
Maximus Formula S.E. BIOS 0505
Q6600 G0 L626A840 08/13/07
9x400 = 3600
BIOS VCore: 1.47500 V (1.456 V in CPU-Z)
VID = 1.3000 V
No problems with X-Fi in last PCI slot.
No problems going from 975 (P5WDH) -> P35 (P5K-DLX) -> X38 (Maximus Formula).
I said I was going to swear off Asus, but the Maximus Formula seems to be the only decent X38 board available in Toronto at this time.
FINALLY with this new chip I have 3.6 stable for at least longer than 2 minutes. I had it Priming small FFT for an hour which is much better than my last two chips (B3 and G0) who would either error on two cores (B3) out or outright BSOD (G0).
the voltages were within the normal range. start at the end of "normal" and work your way back. strap was auto, try trans booster off and relax to 1. i think static was enabled. if you want the exact settings i'll get them for you. but remember, every cpu, stick of ram, etc., is different. ram was set to 1.94 in bios i believe. remember, this board over volts the ram pretty bad.
Alright, I seem to found a sweet spot right now, Got it to 3.94Ghz (435x9) at 1.55 volts. Northbridge set to 1.55 volts, FSB at 1.65volts, CPU PLL around 1.50-1.70. I forgot what i put it at. But it is stable in XP, Vista 64bit so far. I'll try to get some bios pics with my cam later.
This was an insanely long thread that I read and forgot what happen 40pages back.. =(
So whats the best stable bios for this?
So whats the deal with this board bein EOL? I just ordered mine and comes in on monday. Should i just return this?
i am so close to turning mine on.. i have been building it for over a month now.. all i need now is a video card. anyone want to email me one?
Well, I just lost 2 of my 4 sticks of Patriot 8500 RAM. They were in my blue slots at the time. I don't know why they went bad. THey are rated @ 2.3V and I've never run them above 2.2V actual (2.1 + 0.1V over-volt). For the most part I've been able to run them @ 2.15V-2.18V actual.
I'm not really sure if this is a motherboard issue or just tired DIMMS. Since this is the third set I've burned through in the past year, two sets while using a 680i and now this set here, I'm looking to pick up another kit while I'm waiting for these to go through the long, slow RMA process.
For some reason I can't access the Asus QVL to see what is recommended for this board I would like some opinions on my RAM selection:
Mushkin DDR2-1150MHz (PC9200)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146686
I don't want Corsair RAM and I'd like to pick up the speed a little more than my current sticks.
Thanks....
GAR is our posting King. I'm not doing to bad neither.

Well I just pulled the plug and ordered 2x's (2x1GB) kits of the Mushkin 9200's. They seemed to do fine on other Intel chipsets and they are Micron D9's so they shouldn't OC any worse than my Patriots which are also D9 chips. I'll find out on Tuesday:up:.
So, what settings are people using to get 4x1GB sticks stable @ 450MHz+ FSB?
ShawnTRD is the Spam King though
So, they've attached the water block with screws now, eh? Haven't paid much attention to that ever since I saw one pre-production board (think it was that EATX X38 board from Asus, whatever "elite noobpwner led se" it's named), which had the water block glued to the northbirdge. This one guy dropped the board like 10cms, the block just dropped right off.
Well my Ballistix are dead. Was running them in the white slots. Following settings: DDR2 1069, 4-4-4-10-2T, 2.34 volts, actively cooled. Since the RAM is rated for 2.2 I didn't think it was a big deal. This will be my 2nd RMA for these. The first set died in my 680i at DDR2 1200 5-5-5-15-2T, 2.3 volts. I may just sell these (after RMA) and see what else I can get.
So for now all I have is a stick of 1GB DDR2 533 OC'd to DDR2 600. Yielding me a cool 2.7 GHz, LOL.
You guys are making me nervous about the RAM. My board is overvolting the RAM about a tenth of a volt... I set 2.1 I get 2.2
I have reverted back to 0401 and the whole rig is running much cooler. It's not just a number glitch..the board runs much hotter on the 0701.
But it also holds in better at higher clocks too... Probably due to the over volts to th NB SB and DRAM..
Noticed no difference in V Drop on the Vcore form 040 to 0701...
What seems odd is there are so many different ways/settings to get a stable clock...I've tried at least a half dozen radically different voltage settings to run stable at 3600...
No worries CyberD, this RAM quit in my 680i too. I doubt it was the board. A lot of people have to RMA the PC2 8500 Ballistix Tracers.
Ok, according to AnandTech's review, 110 PCIE Frequency was safe.
They were wrong and now my RAID-0 array got screwed; well I 'think' it's the 110 PCIE Freq that caused the problem; basically I restarted after Vista applied all the updates, it came to the login screen, configured all the updates and then basically the HD drives stopped responding. The OS was left with a black screen and moveable mouse-pointer, no BSOD or crash. When I restarted I noticed that the POST hanged on Detect IDE, so I am assuming this is directly related to ICH9R instability. Could there be any other linkages to this issue?
This is pretty bad news for me because I had a years worth of Music Production work on it, so can anyone recommend me some good 'de-stripers' or techniques for RAID-0 recovery? :(
I have a spare HD that I can use to install a temporary OS on it for assisting recovery, so I'm up for all options really.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yea, I've even RMA'd my Crucial Tracer before, They wouldn't even hold 1066mhz at 2.25 volts O_o
Death of D9s are common tho. Anyways. Don't worry CyberD, Also, can you do a little test for me, See if Coretemp reads the same temps at the same clocks, or is 0404 truly cooler then 0701.
Numerically yes I get a lower reading at idle and at load in BIOS 0401 than 0701. Core Temp (even with the patch/workaround) has stopped working in my Vista install on the Maximus even though it works fin n the P35 rigs. It does work in XP...but I am Folding in CVista...which is where I get my temps from...
Don't want to flash and reset everything right this minute but I will get some screenshots up later.
it's so odd, i didn't have any problems with temps while in 0701... i thought i did but it was ambient temps rising and me not realizing it. i have 0602 flashed right now. the pic below pretty much speaks for itself. thanks warboy!! also, just want everybody to remember that my probe voltages are higher then what i set in bios... almost everything gets over volted.
