A GTX will last ok for 'reasonable' gaming ( 1680x1050 4xAA 16xAF ) for more than a while.

Taking benchmarking out of the question, and speaking as a gamer ( well, at least the gaming part of me :p: ) I can't remember having the same graphics card in my gaming rig for such a 'big' period.
After all, the 8800GTX was a great purchase from all views, truthfully.

Thanks for your advice. Well... The problem is... That in the short run i will buy a Dell 24" Wide TFT running at 1920x1200 and that may hurt the GTX in the coming games..

G98 looks pretty good if the $149 price tag is true. G92 should def be high end.....it's been a while since G80 came out.

8800GTX (/ultra) has been king for a loong time now.

(looks at November on calendar...:yawn2:)...i dont have 2008 calendar yet :lol2:

perhaps nvidia tests waters / yields with lower cost 65nm parts before releasing uber g90 after kinks/process worked out more :)
process shrink always seems to be problematic at first.

That's what I'm thinking. The 8700GTS was heard of before in the channels and that will probably replace the 8800GTS, while the 8900 (as rumored the new generation is not so much a new gen, but a long awaited refresh) is going to be around also.

Anyways, Nvidia could have changed the number scheme if they wanted, but no talk ever of the G90 does not mean it doesn't exist :up:

Anyways since I'm running a 30" monitor, 2560 x 1600 is really demanding and I don't want to go SLI so I'm going to have to wait and hope that a new high end comes out sooner rather than later since while the Ultra can play even DX10 mode games on everything maxed except AA, it's cutting it close! (Though its still never unplayable, which is an absolutely amazing card)

No, no way they will make the chips lower than the g80 ones. Did nvidia release the specs of the cards yet? Don't think so. So how would they know what will it be...
Personally I only care about the high end card spec. Which is rumored to be called the g90. And hoping to be released around november.

Because actually, if release is two months from now, more than a few companies that work with Nvidia on cards will have an idea of specs.

Just because G92 and G98 are mid to low end doesn't mean a high end doesn't exist. Coding isn't always set in stone, and much are just rumors.

But with all the latest buzz, G92 = an 8800GTS replacement, G98 = a replacement to the 8400-8600, and a new high end might be G90. The numbering scheme might reflect this as being more of a refresh than a new generation, since supposedly they are using the G80 core but tweaking it while also supporting PCIE 2.0, DisplayPort, etc. Hence an 8700 series, 8900 series, etc.

Or it's just nVidia being nVidia - keeping their mouth shut about the high-end product until they are good and ready to release info on it.

They said they have a 1Tflop beast that will be released in Q4 of this year and it will be "high-end". Do you think these specs are capable of that? I don't. :lol:

Remember last year before the G80 release we really didn't know any factual information about the card until 2-4 weeks before it came out. Sure did have plenty of FUD from internet traffic sites though...and I'm sure I don't have to tell you which those are.

The buzz going around is the high-end refresh is g92x2...just like 7950GX2 was two 7900GT's.

A 8800GTS with a 256-bit bus and higher clocks. 512MB of ram is a given, although the GDDR3 instead of GDDR4 is a surprise. It sounds like a very efficient (size per die/performance/power/heat) design, as the 8800gts 320MB is a winner, and a smaller bus + more ram seems like a nice sweet spot. Put two of those together on 65nm, and I bet you could stay under or around the G80 power requirements (<225W). Hey, and 192 shaders (mad mad mul) @ 1750 = >1 teraflop. Granted, shaders may not be clocked that high.

A high-end part would be 1GB of ram. ;)

What would it compete with you ask? Why a RV670x2 of course...

It makes sense to me as the GPU companies have alluded to going to MCM next-gen. This may be testing the waters, or perhaps a taste of things to come. Sure, there could be G90/R680...but we hear much more about these parts, and now it seems the pairing of them is the next likely high-end.

I predicted a 64 shader 8700 way back when the 8600 data was coming out. I say it again, a 64 shader 256bit chip fits in nicely between the 8600/8800 in both price & performance.

BernchZowner, do you have any info on shader clocks that you can share? Is it higher than the 8800Ultra in shader clocks?

You seem to miss that while the 8800GTS is 96 shaders, the G92 is only 64;
2×64 = 128, which is the same amount as the 8800GTX/U

24xx shader clocks do sound better...
