In the manual, the 2 slot listings for 1600 and 1800 are for XMP DIMM installation recommendations. I hope that things will work out as wished. We should find out soon though. I also have P5E3 premium and QX9770 but unfortunately the 4x1gb will have to wait a bit (mobo being RMAed). Puttz, let us know how things turn out after you get things up and running.

Well, I've been able to boot this board with 4x 1GB of OCZ DDR3-1800 [running at 1600 with timings of 7-7-7-21 and voltage @ 1.90]; but as soon as Windows comes to the login screen it freezes. So far the highest clock I've been able to obtain using 4 sticks of RAM has been 1350Mhz with timings of 6-6-6-18 at 1.90v. I have not tried with just 2 sticks because I want to be able to use all 4 sticks. For now, I am content with being able to boot my PC at 450FSB and 1350Mhz on the RAM. I did a 32M calculation in SuperPI, but didn't have time to run it on OCCT yet. The PC is running on air cooling at the moment, but once I get it to where I want it and stablelize it, I will install the water cooling loop.
If anyone needs to know, my setup is:
Intel Q9450 running at 3.6GHz [vCore @ 1.20v on BIOS/1.168v on CPU-Z and OCCT; PLL @ 1.50v; FSB Termination @ 1.25v; NB @ 1.25v; SB @ 1.05v; everything else was left at AUTO]
OCZ DDR3-1800 Platinum Edition 1GB x 4 running at 1350Mhz [6-6-6-18, 1.90v]
I will mess around with it some more tonight; maybe try it with just 2 RAM sticks and see if I can get it to run at 450FSB and DDR3-1800. I know the RAM is capable of doing DDR3-2000, but I will not try that until I'm confortable with a stable 425-450FSB so that I can then install my water cooling loop on it.
I'm able to run 4x1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3-1600 memories at 1600 7-7-7-18 1.80V on my P5K3 Deluxe. So ever P35 chipset can support 4x1GB memories at 1600 CL7. I don't see why X38/X48 chipset cannot run 4x1GB at 1600.
My origional question was though, what if any of the mid ranged speeds of DDR1600 are overclocking to DDR1800~2000? You know, just like when early DDR2 533 was overclocking to 830MHz? Also, is the 2x 2g holding anybody back compared to trusted 2x 1g @ same speed and OC?

In my case, if I follow those steps I can't even boot into Windows at 1600FSB. If you read page 2-14 of the manual, it states that my particular memory is not supported in dual DDR mode [2 pairs] at any speed above 1333Mhz. Now, I was able to get it to boot with all 4GBs because 1350 and 1333Mhz are so close to eachother that it probably it didn't notice. Anyone that purchased the OCZ DDR3-1800 Plats is on the same boat as me; we are just going to have to wait it out until ASUS kicks out yet another BIOS revision aimed a memory support. I even spoke with ASUS tech support and they told me that as of now [that they have heard of] no memory is capable of running 2 pairs at anything above 1600Mhz; he told me that the only memory capable of stable boot into Windows at 1600 is the Corsair Dominators [same model from the manual]. The thing that scared me was that he told me my particular RAM is not even supported for regular DDR mode at any speed above 1600, that I will be stuck with using just ONE stick.

I have had a terrible time with any adjustment of DRAM frequency. Memory checks out ok. After any change at all (not even to oc speed) I cannot post and will have to manually restart (then automatically stops and restarts twice) then will give overclocked failed message. So after talking with several techs the suggestion was that mobo was faulty which I suspect is the case (psu not the issue = ultrax3 1000w). I will be at 2 sticks 1600 until new mobo arrives and will then try to join the oc crowd.:)Quote:

Things seem to be looking up! :up: I was able to run it at 400FSB, and the RAM is running at 1600Mhz with all 4 sticks. Timings are set to a mere 7-7-7-21 with 1.94v [this RAM supports a max of 2.0v before the warranty is voided out]. As far as system voltage, I got the CPU @ 1.20, the PLL @ 1.50, the termination at @ 1.10, DRAM @ 1.94, NB @ 1.35, SB @ 1.05. I'm happy with those voltages, except for the NB one; does anyone think its a bit high at 1.35v? :confused: Please advise.
PS: I had it running from 12am til 7am this morning on Prime95. Had no errors whatsoever. :yepp:
You should have no problems at all at 1.35 Many with this board are running higher than that with no problems. You are quite safe 24/7 at 1.35 and could safely go higher if needed.Quote:

I had multiple errors with memtest86+, always at address '00000000000 - 0.0MB'.
I disabled USB Legacy in BIOS and the errors vanished.
It seems to be a known trick but I think its great to mention it again in this thread.
I run bios (0401) btw.

I have left fsb strap, ai clock twister and ai transaction booster to [Auto] since I have no clue how to tune them.
Can anyone provide information / link so that we can all understand these settings and be able to tweak them?
Does that CPU need that much to at least do 3.8GHz? I noticed a few voltages kinda high for whaty I'm used to, Is that also what it took to keep it stable? like the PLL of 1.8v I thought 45nm was senisitive to PLL over 1.65v. I never went over 1.712v on my 65nm Quad. How much actual overvoltage is the actual used voltages?Quote:

The straps are diffrent internal timings on the mobo... 333 are most common, performs well, 266 are good if it works, but have difficulties at higher fsb.

Ai Clock twister are what it seems, and what i have noticed on memset, tREF changes when i change this setting, but it cant only be that.. but that is what i've noticed it does.
transaction booster are easy, it affects Performance level, soo 6 are PL6 and so on.
and Pull ins are some more further developed PL, but doesnt change in same way, may help to get PL7 performance at PL8 setting if you pull in those channels, tried it before to keep PL7 and pulled those in, got the same performance as if i were on PL6.

but im not sure what more changed, perhaps its more that we cant see with the eye, some more internals settings maybe, couse the board is shutting down upon this setting when its saved, and it doesnt seem that only tREF needs a complete restart of the system, or maybe it think it does.. ah well, it gains pretty much bandwith just by putting it from stronger to strong looses about 200mb in read...so it DOES something atleast.. but a more longer stability needs little lighter settings maybe.. im keeping it at strong 24/7.
im keeping a pretty tight setting 24/7 , as tight and fast as it gets without overvolting it to much...
Those voltage numbers and timings all seem to need to go up quickly after 3.8ghz with my cpu. At 3.8 I can run stable much tighter timings and less voltages all around.Quote:

Especially the Canyon Flight test is very low. I have not seen any 9800 GX2 in futuremark ORB that performs so BAD.
OS is windows vista x64 SP1, tried drivers: 174.74 & 175.16.
BIOS 0401 for the P5E3 premium.

When you removed the first driver, did you use Driver Cleaner by any chance? I had an issue trying to run my HD2900XT in Xfire and I didn't have Driver Cleaner on it since it is a new PC. Once I removed all the ATI drivers and laid down the new one after a reboot it worked like a charm.Quote:

After the fourth day I saw a large drop in xfireX performance with 2-3850x2. Completely uninstalling, driver cleaner, swapping cards, even a complete os reinstall wouldn't fix it. The score remained 50k in 3dm01 with either 1 or 2 cards no matter what cpu oc I had and no matter if the vid card clocks were stock or 900/1000 didn't matter. The board went back today.
Just want to share my exp. about performance issues with the combo P5E3 premium + 9800GX2.
I remounted my rig and decided to move the 9800 GX2 from the blue slot 2 to the blue slot 1 (closest to the CPU) so that it can better benefit from the airflow in my case.
And surprise the performance issues seem to have vanished, I gained roughly 1.5k points in 3dmark06, especially in HDR tests that now go 15-20 fps faster.

Moreover the slot2 test was with slightly higher CPU clock !
Anyway I am not sure it would work for everyone, but slot2 seems to have bandwith issues with my board.
Of course the 2 blue slots are supposed to be x16.

I'm running the system at 425FSB, with the RAM underclocked to 1361Mhz @ 6-6-6-18 2T [this board really hates my RAM running above 1600Mhz]. Been doing a Prime95 for the last 75 minutes and still going strong.
QUESTION
Where can I get the Cell Shock RAM from? I only got two options, either get the RAM that is supported at 1800MHZ, or drop this board altogether and get the BlackOps; any thoughts?

Thing is, this is now getting old. First, no Express Gate, not that it matters much since I disable it anyways, but if that was missing who knows what else was missing. Second, the forth memory slot [2nd black one] had a short or something, which would just stop the system from booting at all. I honestly went with this board because I already owned 2x RADEON HD2900XT 1GB cards and there weren't many X48 boards out and this one offered the most; if I didn't own them or just owned one, I doubt I would have got this board. But the thing that p!sses me off the most is, that when I first heard of this board was when I was searching for the RAM for my new system, and guess what? Driver Heaven had a review in which they used this board and our RAM, and not only did they run benchmarks at 1800Mhz, they even tighten up the timings and what is even more aggrevating, they kicked it all the way up to 2010Mhz. Which leads me to believe 1 of 2 things happened there, either ASUS sent them a super rock solid board, or they lied; I'm leaning towards ASUS sending them a better board that what they are selling to us.
It's like they say, third time is the charm; this was my third board, and I know it sounds like I messed them up, but how could I? I never went passed any voltage that would damage neither my CPU nor my RAM. I never messed with a setting I didn't know jack about. I know the stabilty issues are caused by the RAM incompatabilty, I get that and quite honestly I can live with that, but the random little issues that I have discovered while trying to reach a more stable 400FSB just flat out made me hate this board. Like you said Razmatazz, the CellShock RAM option is nearly out of the question, I paid nearly $500 for the 4GBs of OCZ, yet 2GB of CellShock are $364-465, not to mention I would prolly have to bite the bullet and unload my OCZs for a lot less that what I paid for them. Then there is the ever present what if???; what if adding a RAM that seems to work for other people does not fix my issues because something else might be the root. I need to cut my loses, and just ditch the board and get one that supports the RAM that I already own. I'm really eager for tomorrow to come, just so that I can talk to the people that I got the motherboard from, and to call up Foxconn tech support and make sure the BlackOps supports my RAM to at least 1800Mhz.

I'm currently running the system at 450FSB/1350Mhz RAM w/ 400Mhz FSB strap; CPU @ 1.36v, RAM 6-6-6-15-2T @ 1.98v, PLL @ 1.78v, VTT @ 1.30v, NB @ 1.41v, SB @ 1.20v. Seems pretty stable, did Super PI 4M and 32M [I usually do 4M first because 9/10 times it will freeze if the settings aren't right, meanwhile 32M can be almost finished before it spots an error]; Prime95 was stable for a couple of hours until I stopped it.
The only way i could get this board stable was set everything on auto except cpu voltage. NB voltage and Dimm voltage. Start from there.
Well, it's finally put together.
Now I could use a little help with some settings.
This is what I got - QX9770 3.2 running 3.6 stable.
- P5E3 Prem w/Wi-Fi Bios 0402
- 4 x 1g CellShock (Blue Kits) 1866mhz running 1600mhz all 4 slots.
Set up went without a hitch & everything paired up nicely (Knock on wood...lol). All Bios settings are normal (AUTO) except FSB & Multiplier.
Any help reaching a rock solid stable 4.0 - CPU w/2000mhz ram would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.- Any help getting both PCIx16 (Blue slots) running full out would be appreciated too. Bottom one running twice as fast as the top. Already tried flipping cards to no avail.
Are using Xfire? Did you set both card to the same GPU and RAM settings? For me, the only difference is that the card actually connected to the monitor runs a little warmer than the non populated one. I think you should use 1 card at time and test each in both slots to see if the performance is the same (that will show you what part is causing your issue).
Did all that & the cards & slots work perfectly on their own. I'll try running them at the same speed. there was just a minor diff higher on the slave (bottom).Quote:

RMA has been filed, board is gonna go back to them for the last time; BlackOps board ordered to replace it, should be in my hands tomorrow. The many issues with the P5E3 Premium, and the layout of the BlackOps really drove me to the replacement; I no longer have a need for my Koolance motherboard blocks, but I guess it's a small price to pay to get rid of the headache I got with the P5E3.
I've got both jumpers on. I'm not to worried about it.....yet. lol
It is like the upper slot is only running 8x instead of 16x when in crossfire mode. Probably a Cat or bios update to fix that soon enough.
I'll keep playing with it in the mean time. It's proably something simple I've overlooked.

I am having a horrible time trying to get rid of lockup / freezing issues with my P5E3 premium.
And this is just to get my oc stable at fsb=450. I have tested with 2 different memory kits (2x1GB CellShock PC14400 8-7-6-21 and 2x1GB Corsair Dominators 7-7-7-20) and 2 different CPUs (QX9650 and E8500) and the lockups are always there.
The system freezes after 1h, 2h, sometimes 6h of priming.
It is very tough to spot what causes the problem.
I have tried nearly every option that the bios can offer:
BIOS: 0401 & 0402
FSB: 450
CPU: x8
STRAP: 333 & 400
CR: 1T & 2T
DRAM Timing: 7-7-7-20 or 8-7-6-21 depending on the kit, rest on AUTO

I am clueless what I could try next.
The freeze doesn't seem to happen if I leave the fsb at 333, so I guess it's not my PSU or 9800 GX2.
Because I have 2 mem kits and 2 CPUs to test with, I tend to believe it is the MB :-(
Anyone else is experiencing random freeze/lockups?

Wow, those two RAMs are the ones "supposed" to be supported by this board. Have you tried setting your vCore to 1.36250v? Worked for me. Also, you did not mention your PLL voltage, I had mine set to 1.70v. My VTT was set to 1.30v, you should give that a try as well.
I have bump vcore to 1.365 on occasion, also tried PLL up to 1.6... VTT also maxed to 1.36 at some point.
I am just doubtfull it's CPU related. With a multi of x6 (clock=2.7GHz) the lockup issue is still there...
I have my NB at 1.41 and it seems to run stable at that setting. I got prime95 errors with NB much higher than that.
Puttz, I would like to see what you are able to do with your ram. Please post some info/bios settings when you are able to dial things up.
So far I have found that this board is extremely settings sensitive.
Mateo, try these settings for me please:
FSB = 450
FSB Strap = 333
DRAM = 1350Mhz
DRAM Timings = 6-5-5-15-2T or 6-6-6-18-2T if you get locked up using the first set of timings
LLC = Performance
CPU = 1.36250
PLL = 1.70
VTT = 1.30
NB = 1.39
DRAM = whatever voltage you use to boot your ram at 1333Mhz + .02
SB = 1.20
Everything else default or Auto. The reason behind you trying these settings is to figure out if the issue lies behind your RAM. Even with my F'ed up RAM I'm able to run stable at 3.6Ghz.

However my dominators really rock, I have tested them successfully at 1900 and 2000 cas 8.
What I tried already is to loosen timings to 9-9-9-24, go PL 9 and clock twister to [Lighter]. And I still got a lockup :confused:
Right now I am playing with GTL settings on my E8500.
Tried 0.61 and got a prime error but no lock after ~2h.
I am now benching again at 0.63 and crossing fingers.

Guys, Which memory strap seems to work best on this board? I've noticed that my memory read bandwidth scores are consistantly higher using the 400mhz strap as opposed to the 333mhz strap. Has anyone else noticed this? If it is relevant, I noticed this with the FSB set to 400 mhz and I have an E8400 cpu with 2x2gb OCZ platinum ram running at 1600mhz.
I also cant run the board on any divider other than the 2:1 divider. I am running the 0151 Bios, and this makes it as real pain when testing the CPU overclock for stability as I cant run the ram any slower than 1600mhz if I have the FSB set to 400 mhz.
First thing, boot with your settings all set to auto and upgrade your BIOS to at least 0204; second thing, the 2GB variety of the OCZ platinum has a limit of 1.95v before you void the warranty so keep that in mind [the 1GB variety has a 2.0v].Quote:

Just bought the P5E3 Premium and some nice Corsair C7 memory.
According to the revision and corsairs IC inquery on their forum, there shoud be micron chips on these 2048 modules. Lucky for me, i hope :D
Comming weekend i'll be setting up this combination.
Only have to wait for the 64 bit OS to arrive,..
Maybe i gonna need a bit support on tuning the bios. :up:

Hope this helps someone. I am still trying to get a kit that will run at 7-6-6-24, but no luck yet. My last kit ran at 7-6-6-24, but a stick went bad after a few weeks at 1.94v. Cant believe that VDIMM could have caused it, but who knows. At least OCZ stands behind their product.
Hey guys/gals, adjusting clock skew did help my stability. I have channel A advance 150 and channel B delay 250. Problem is I don't know if these are the best skew settings. What I attempted was to put 1 memory module into channel A and turn up the frequency until I got memtest errors. Problem is that this board is so PICKY. I turned down CPU multiplier in order to try to isolate the ram. I could get FSB up to 485 but no higher. It seems that everytime I adjust a setting that the mobo doesn't like it will not post and then I have to do a hard reset and then memory defaults to 1333 and I get an overclock error (major pain in the A$$). I then tried with 2 modules in order to try to tweak channel A and B. I got a bunch of errors with 2 modules unless I disabled DRAM static read and DRAM dynamic write but I ran into the same problem as I dialed things up. I then left them enabled and thought I would go the other way, lowering DRAM frequency until errors disappeared. But low and behold again I hit a wall where the board would not post again. I then tried all 4 sticks and got no errors with DRAM static read and DRAM dynamic write on auto all the way up to 1940 MHz. I even turned the voltage down to around 1.84 and couldn't believe that memtest still ran error free (only went once thru 5th test however - longer may have made a difference)
So bottem line is that clock skew seems to make a difference. Prime95 was stable but system would crash until I adjusted clock skew. I would be interested if anyone else has tried to dial in their clock skew. I would assume it would be similar among the boards but may not be exactly the same. If anyone accomplishes this I would appreciated it if you could let us know what the optimal skew is for channel A and channel B on your board. I suspect that I am limited because of an extremely picky board in addition to a quad core. A suspect a dual core would be able to do it much easier.
Other question is---How can I (What is the best way) to induce errors in memtest in order to dial in the clock skew? <can you believe that I am actually asking for memtest errors?> I tried tightening the timings but again the board wouldn't post. I tried progressivly lowereing DRAM voltage and this just made memtest run hit or miss. It would just lock up after a short amount of time even though no memtest errors had appeared. i believe I could go higher if only I wasnt so sleepy. The voltages that I used still got some headrooms before they reach the dangerous point..
Is anyone else having problems with the 266mhz strap with the 0401 bios?
266 was fine on the shipped bios I got, but no boot on 0401.
266 is also a no-boot with 0401 0402.
Only worked at fsb 333 as far as I can tell.
What worries me most is the performance issues the board has with 9800 GX2 cards. Performance drops significantly on same particular tests (nature in 3dmark01 or canyon flight in 3dmark06).
Just curious any ppl in there using crossfire or HD3870x2 ?

I am happy that the corsairs run at their rated speeds without any hassel.
On the other hand i am having trouble running them at higher speeds.
The read speed speed is a bit to low for what i had hoped for.

I can run my CPU at 3400 with fsb425 and ddr at 900Mhz but i have to loosen the timings but then the results are worse then i posted above.

What voltages should i change to get 425 to 450 stable and gaining on memory performance?

1.30v is a lot to get that CPu to 3.2Ghz; I was able to get to 3.2Ghz stable with 1.20v using that same board. Also, if you want to tighten your timings you might need to raise your NB voltage, I had mine at 1.35v to run my OCZs @ 7-6-6-18 2T 1600Mhz.Quote:

I changed several of the options from "Auto" to their default or standard value, just so I would know the exact settings. Most of the above settings fall into that category.
Any advice on how to eek more FSB performance out of the memory? Although I could boot into 410 or 425, I was unable maintain Prime95 for more than a few seconds.
In your sig you say that your RAM is DDR3-1600, does that mean it is 1600 or that you are running it at 1600? Let me make myself a little clearer, my RAM is DDR3-1800 but I used to run it at 1600. That particular board is extremelly picky when it comes to supporting RAM passed 1600Mhz.Quote:
