Hi guys whats the best 680board for Q6600 and also whats the best 975 board?
damn i need to go to watercooling
Two Q6600s retail. Hit wall on both machines, at exactly the same point – 3500+ goes boom. 3456 is rock solid.
Ultra-120 Extreme on both is simply stunning – 10-15C cooler than the Ultra-120s they replaced.

@davexl: what are you using to measure your power consumption and how much $$$ does it cost?
Power consumption by Power mate
(I have rented it for AUD $35 per week - it costs $300! I believe in the US you can buy a cheap thing called a Kill-a-watt for USD$30)
Ambient and case temperature monitoring by T-Balancer
Monitoring graphs by Samurize
Hair and makeup by my wife
have my Quad core system up and running now. Just got a monster HS and some (hopefully) good fans with it, will install and setup over the weekend, will let you know how i get on, hopefully I won't hit an FSB wall on my Mobo too soon ( p5n32 -Sli premium ! :( )
yea i know ... call it a mixture of impluse buying .... and getting what you can ....
HI all. Just bought this CPU and doing some testing. I have been browsing the forum for some time and see people with vcore up to 1.5v on this chip but when I set my vcore in Bios to 1.365 or above it boots to the Welcome screen and reboots. Have only tried to 360 FSB @1.35v and core 2 fails Orthos in under a minute so I wanted to add more Vcore. From reading here my board is not the best for this chip but it certainly runs my E6600 at 1.5 vcore.
Chip=L631B120
Bios=2004
Vcore=1.35v
MCH=1.75v
Mem=2.3v @ 1-1 @ 4-4-3-10.
Speed step, C1 and usb legacy disabled.
All other settings are Auto I believe.
Any thoughts or suggestions on the Vcore would be aprreciated.
Hope I posted in the right thread.:)
Anyone know of a wattage calculator for these quads? There used to be a good one online but that was pre-C2D.
100c for quads, and 85c for duals. One thing you gotta remember, is cpu's can handle alot of heat before any kind of damage, core 2 duos can handle heat up to 90c on load and work just fine, i have had a overclocked E6600 that ran really hot even at stock speeds, but the cpu never had one issue, also gpu's are another example, these things can handle 100c and up and nothing will happen, so really you should not worry if your temps are above 80c, as long as there is good amount of air flow in your case/room.
I don't think this statement is true. Have a look at Intel's specs on the q6600: 62 °C. The 85, 100 you're thinking about are the constants used to calculate the internal temp based on the DTS reading inside the chip (core temp = constant - DTS), where the constants is either 85 for a C2D or 100 for a quad.
Is 1.625v-1.65v too high? I can do this in the mid 50s using my A/C in my watercooling loop but don't know if that's worth 3.5-3.6.
this chip is going out the window or at stock a year from now. I sell old systems to friends and buy modern hardware used all the time - it doesn't cost me that much, and I get to work with cool new stuff. 16 months at best.
I keep speedstep on, and the computer isn't on 24/7. It gets used this much for about 4 hours a day straight, sometimes 6 scattered on and off.
I notice after 1.55-1.6v, higher voltage doesn't even make a difference. I guess my e6400 spoiled me.. there's no easy 1.6-1.8 Ghz overclock on this q6600. :(
mine goes 9*360@1,4V (BIOS, no mod). 100% load core temps are quite high, 80 Celsius. outside temp is 32 Celsius. i might get back to use WCing. :(

SRY for big res!
Now trying 9x381, 1.575v,1.579 actual. Hopefully this passes some orthos for me. 51c coretemp. :)
The water and the cpu seem to be fighting each other. It starts at 56-59, goes to 51, then to 55, then to 49. I'm rooting for the water. :D

@jugeen: dude, those temps are smoking (average is 81.3 °C). I understand that your room temp is 32 °C which is also pretty hot. Have a look at this thread which shows just how painfully room temp heats up your CPU cores.
I think you have a serious cooling problem and I base that on my PC using the formula on the line in that post. In other words, if I use an x value (room temp) of 32 and apply it to the formula (which I fully acknowledge is extrapolation), I get a predicted average core temp of 70.3 °C which is nearly 11 °C than your current temps.
My suggestions:
1) Check that you have good case airflow/consider a better air cooling HS like the Ultra-120 eX
2) Drop your o/c to 9x333 and run your mem @ 1:1 -- 3.2 GHz vs. 3.0 Ghx is only 7 % less clock rate but MAY lower your over-the-red-line temps
3) Check to see if you can minimize your vcore; mine Q6600 will run 9x333 @ 1.3250v.
4) Consider lapping both your HS and IHS on your CPU. This gave me over 10 °C decrease in my hottest core and about 7 °C decrease in my coolest core:
Lapped my Q6600
Lapped my Ultra-120 Extreme
Both threads have pics and temp results.
i wanna lap both my cpu and heatsink but i have never lapped anything before and im scared lol .. but hell for a 10c drop .. it might be worth it
It is worth it... just take your time while lapping and read up on the topic... you'll be fine. Be sure to report back to us.
Right, well ive just stuck an order in for a Q6600 myself, and i have a D-tek fusion sat here waiting to meet it ;) .Ive been keeping an eye on this thread to see what ppl are getting - would be really pleased with 3.5ghz myself.
Thanks Gar - I'll report back here when i have it all up and running. I should be setting up my loop on Sunday, so I should have some results early next week :)
^^ Talk for yourself :P.
Ill never give up sex, not even if you give me a 16 Core monster! Lol..
Anyways, Whats the best batch of Retail Q66's people have seen till now?
Definitely need to apply better cooling........Using the P5B it hits a wall at 425FSB
Right now it's been folding on all cores @3330MHz 1.45v for two days.

I know, the temps are a bit high....
I'm hoping that my P5K will fair better when I get time to set it up for some DICE runs.
Forgive the X3220 result, but I thought it might be of value, as it is the same thing as a Q6600, and clocking exactly the same EDIT: a bit better than the Q6600 I posted earlier about in the P5K-DL

I think all quad IHS are as bent as a banana aren't they ...?? mine is ! would def. be worth lapping it in. I'll probably do mine, but I'm having probelms with mine,
I started a new thread would appreciate comments .... pls. :)

That's interesting, I have a X3220 L640F058 (pack date 3/1/07 as well).
My results are back a page (also in my sig)... http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=142430&page=5
That's awesome for air cooling.
Mine has 3-4 degrees difference between cores... but I'm water cooling. There has been a lot of discussion on the water cooling forums about how to even out temps... it seems by tweaking the mounting tension on each of the four mounting posts, you can even out the cores. You need to be able to monitor the temps under load while turning each screw slightly to see what effect it has on the temps. This assumes your heat sink uses screws and that they can be adjusted while the system is running.
can i just ask, which temp program do you believe .? asus probe says 33c and temp 0.95 reads about 60 ish per core ... ( on load at stock settings. ) Can't believe Asus probe, but would of thought there software should be good for there own boards ..!
is it? I have so few reference points to compare to. But if you say so that makes me happier. :) Within 2% percent of what I used to do on dual core is awesome - thanks Ultra-120 Extreme!
I can't do that - the screws on the Ultra-120 have springs on them that do the work, so all are fully screwed in. I have put some spacers in there and remounted several times with consistent results, so i am leaning toward thinking I have one of those imperfect IHS that could use a lap job.. oh well, it clocks well, so thats all that matters.Quote:

RMClock is the sh*t. Just google it and use it.
Right, my Q6600 just arrived. Its an L645F197 - any one have any ideas on how this thing behaves? Hopefully its a good one!

Vcore at 1.55 in Bios, working on lowering it,currently priming at 1.5375.Also will be upgrading WC'ing within the next few days so will hopefully get those temps down, too damn hot for my liking chaps!
Well, it just got 100MHz better (3550) :yepp:
I think I am at the limit now though, 3564 and over explode, and my damn uneven IHS means my temps on Core 0&1 are 6C worse than the Q6600, meaning I am running out of room on heat, even though I could go a couple more notches on voltage.
Oh well, I am happy.
seems ive run into a fsb hole on my board, from 370-400 seems to be a hole.......anyone else with this board and a Q6600?
I have a vdroop modified P5B-Del; voltage load = voltage idle = 1.232v. The BIOS voltage is 1.2375v. It is >6h 2x othos stable. I stopped running it after 6 h.
Cooling is a lapped Ultra-120 Extreme and the IHS on the CPU is also lapped.

Its open case at the moment with couple of fans cooling the vrms around the cpu. I will probably stick it in a antec 900 and been running 2hours on quadprime95 wich i believe is plenty of time(Electricity bill dammit! ) its on a ASus P5kdeluxe mb. I can load up windows xp and run SisoftBenchmarks, 3dmark06 at 3.8ghz but on these volts its not quadprime stable.. just scared to give her anymore juice:shrug:
Same Q6600 was 3.4ghz stable on my DFI 680lt:clap: . and I'm sure missing SLI grrrrr 3dmarks just isnt the same after doing it the SLI way hehe.
:(
If I run 3.7 GHz, two cores, I can prime for about 10 minutes(no errors. Any 2 cores. If I try to prime 4, it fails within a second, even at an actual voltage after vdroop/vmch/vfsb mods of 1.65v, 1.625v, 1.6v, different FSBs
Could this be a PSU issue? If I am at 3.4 which is stable for 8 hours of prime and more at 1.575v actual, and turn on orthos on core 0 and 1 and another instance on cores 2 and 3 at the same time, the multimeter shows the PSU drop from 12.1 to 11.6 then spike back up to 12.1. It's a PCP&P turbocool510. I tried removing 4 HDs so I was left with one, all the PCI cards, and using less fans, but same thing. CPU limit, or try a new PSU?
Here´s a little test of my L644G099 with cold air on a P5K DLX :D

Tomorrow, time to go under SS :D
Any stability past 12 seconds of use on one of four cores?
At what point does the cPu internal design start to throttle? I was doing some testing at 3.65ghz 1.55v, ran quadprime95 up in the 80C range perfectly fine no errors for an hour jumped into 3dmark and my FPS were terrible 20fps. Went back into bios set everything to stock ran 3mdark06 back up to 64fps..
What I'm saying is you could be running quadprime 95 stable, cpu-z shows correctly and jump into 3dmark06 and be throttled back?
It is possible running 3dmark caused the graphics card to heat up. The fact that something in the case was running at 80c probably didn't help the graphics card much, which could heat up a lot(especially with crappy stock cooling), and heat the CPU up more pushing it to 100c.
I've been stable for 20 hours of prime on a single core amd, but until I upped the voltage one notch, it failed 7 minutes into fear. Games can be weird. :(

I need some help, I need to get another Mobo ( this one is ...... well .... )
I thought I should use the lastest chipset, so the commando is out, I def. want an SLi board so the P5K DX is out, Is it the P5b dx for me then .? I want to O'c the chip and want a board that will actually support my ram (pc8500 ) .. any suggestions ...?? thanks.
Once I get the right board, hopefully I can start posting some decent O/c results in here ..!
Now why would the P5B Dlx be any better than the P5K? If you really want SLI and good quad-core overclocking, I think your best bet is the latest eVGA 680i revision (A1/T1).
thought the P5B was Sli and the P5K was ATI , will the commando handle my Ram ..? and I is an older chipset; will I have any probs ?
thanks for your repley s.
I have run my Q6600 to 4200 Mhz 466 Fsb on my Commando Motherboard.. http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=195644
My Memory is Gskill green heatspreader BNR version...
and it Holds Great under duel orthos although i notice no matter what i do in the bios after 10 min or so it seems to throttle back the multiplyer..
i dont know why and im not sure if its Cpu related or motherboard related...
i cant see me ditching this board in a hurry as i know its so solid..I have killed a few p5b-delux mboards trying to get where i am today with the commando..
i do run a pencil vdroop on the motherboard as it helps my Oc greatly.
Cheers Hori
so the commando is the way to go then .? I can't find the QVL for it and I don't suppose my ram will be listed on it any way .... but I will be able to run it @1066 ...?
thanks for your help ... I'll be buying this hopefully today .. :)
A1 is working good for me, but the 8x multi doesnt seem to be working good for me.
Hi guys!
According to Sig below do u advice me to replace my PSU?
ATM i'm running Q6600 @ 2907 with 1.315 @ Bios... is that good? I'm using a TT BT old version... should i replace the fan with a powerful one?
Thanks,
MC
Sorry to be off topic, But just wanted to say a BIG thanks to all those who recommended the commando to me, a VERY good stable board. Can't wait to start O/c 'ing !
Hi people,
What is considered safe temps for these quads? I overclocked my X3220 to 3 GHz (333x9) and used prime95 25.2 for stablity test. During my test (small FFT), core temp (0.94) read 71C/71C/69C/69C. My room temp at that time was 29C (it was a hot day >_<). So are my temp in the green or should I be worried.
Thanks.
Right, well, after much performance (dont ask) ive finally managed to begin testing overclocks on my Q6600! Temps are horrid, even on my new fusion, thanks to the IHS being in bad need of lapping.
However... Ive so far pushed it to 3ghz so far on stock voltage (in fact with vdroop its dropping to 1.28v!) only done 2 1/2hr quad prime stable so far as I ran out of time. Will run it for longer tonight just to make sure - but it certainly looks like a promising start :D
EDIT - My Q6600 is running on an EVGA Rev A1.
Not good for to many benchy's lol but i got it there al the same eheh
Its an L645F197 - Did some more testing last night. 5hrs prime stable with clocks/voltages as above. Really pleased with that.
Now im gonna push on, see how much further it will go on stock voltage. I keep waiting for it to need a big hike in voltages!
Will post more results soon :)

I can do 3dmarks at 3600mhz 1,53v but my Tuniq Tower cant handle the heatload for much time (im eagerly awaiting the Thermalright IFX-14 :p: )
And here are an extreme shot under vapochill LS stock :D:

Q6600 L0701C564
Benches at 3900 (434x9) with 1.625 (BIOS says 1.588) and 4ple Prime at 3600 (450x8) with 1.475; couldn't be bothered to search inbetween, 3600 will be my 24/7 and 3800-3900 my benching frequency.
Also, booted in OS at ~4040, but XP was misbehaving :D
Watercooling by Apogee GT + HE120.3 + MCP655, temps get around 61C full load at 3600 and 74C at 3900.
I just got a C2Q Xeon X3220. It's an L0701C and so far it's passed Prime95 with four threads for over 24 hours. I don't plan to go above 3.2ghz due to heat, but at 333x9 for 3ghz, it was running a load voltage of 1.24 and Prime did not fail. I've been fairly lucky so far with the Core 2 processors as my E6600 has a default VID of only 1.225. I like to keep the voltage low and the E6600 does 3.2ghz at the default volts. The X3220 I have has a default VID of 1.325 and my load voltage is 1.32 at 8x400 for 3.2ghz right now. I'm sure I can stabilize at under 1.35 at this speed - hopefully closer to 1.3v or if I'm really lucky, under 1.3v.
Speaking of voltages what are the max voltages of the q6600 ?
Is it cpu 1.6volts and max temp should be 90deg C ? I'll post in the commando thread to find out max NB, etc.
O/c going well, (but slow ) can take mine up to 333 on standard volts etc ( well every thing on auto ) but seem to hit the commando wall @ 345 was going to turn up the volts but if it's a common hole at the freq, then I should set my sights on 400hz and carry on from there. Any one care to post there O/c BIOS settings on a commando ?
Guys, somebody have heard about G0 Kentsfield's? some OC report?
No problem , i think received my parcel Wednesday or thursday (Q6600 GO , E6850 E0 ans Celeron 460 2.4ghz :) )
one Q6600 G0 ES is on the way to me :D
i hope i received it on monday.
hi,
anyone know what the q6600, batch id L709A248 is like for overclocking?
speeds/voltages would be nice.
cheers :)
hmm certain batches do overclock better then others.. mostly luck of the draw.. Its all good and fun.. But honestly. Lets be honest, Everyone should be excited to pull free mhz out of a cpu just by tweaking bios settings.
Im happy to get my E6300 @ 3.3 ghz stable.. i mean. 1.8ghz to 3.3ghz. Friggin awesome
I disagree with your batch statement. Luck of the draw is to what batch you will get.
Knowing the batch and what its capable of makes all the difference. I have had a few hundred 6600 through my hands and certain batches stand out from the rest. 29B for example...... People will pay more 2nd hand for a good batch like the 29B.
ah ok cheers.
does anyone know how well these chips react to phase cooling?
any decent gains with stock volts compared to air? cold bugs?
they should be fine with phase, no cold bug that im aware of.
