Say AzraelDarkAngel,
what size bga ramsinks do you get and where exactly do you place them for the TTBT mod? Do you place them over the H-retaining bar? On the sides? What performance benefit do you get (degrees)? Thanks.
did you actually see what the overclocks were.......mild to no vcore increase....wtf is that....with superior cooling you get the ability to put the vcore higher BUT none of the reviews did that because it was crapping out of course. There is no chance in hell TEC will ever be properly cooled by an air coolerQuote:

Thanks man for the ramsink mod for the TTBT. I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks but will post when I return with the results...
I see very few reviews that really push the limits of overclocking with any cooler. Instead of just assuming that it can't take the heat or that it's "crapping out" at a certain limit we need to find someone we trust to really push it's limits. Regardless, at stock or mild-medium overclock it seems superior to any normal air cooler.Quote:

Anyone know if the Thermalright SI-128 will fit on a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3? Also how does this HSF compare with the Ultra 120.
cheers
I really wish someone would post some numbers. I'm curious but not quite curious enough to risk $100 + shipping.Quote:

Make sure you mount it so that the heatpipes are facing down, towards the PCI-xpress slot. You get better clearance all the way around.
HTH
I been keen to test out the titan amanda for quite awhile( titan armada :) )
I don't see any results yet on conroe. Why do reviewers test it on a amd????
One answer is conroe is low watts so titan isn't necessary well it is for us overclockers.
I put in an order for it this week should be here soon in uk I be testing it on
6400. I let you know.
Great thanks. Going to put one on my DS3Quote:

after the launch of scythe infinity i wonder if the tuniq tower 120 still beats it.... so far i dont see any review comparing this 2 giant....
Well, the Hyper TX is great at stock or mild overclocking but probably can't handle the heatload as well with serious overclocking. However the design is good at cooling surrounding components.Quote:

I haven't read enough about the Ultra-90, but it's bigger brother, the Ultra-120 is far superior to any of these coolers if you want to do any serious overclocking.
Thanks so the freezer 7 pro is the best, or the hyper tx?(sorry, not so good in english)Quote:

ultra 90 is exceptional in the mid range section.
But in a techpowerup review, the blue orb II beats the ultra 90.
It beats a couple of midend HSF(on 120W as well).
Is the Blue orb II completly from copper? or only the base?
And is the Blue orb II better then the freezer 7 pro(for overclocking, e6600)?
Because the blue orb II isn't expensive here, and it delivers great cooling(if you believe the reviews).
First and foremost,   on that roundup.
Real nice work there.
I'm sure your efforts are well appreciated.
Anyhow, I have a few suggestions that I think could make it even better than it already is.
Particularly in regards to the SI-120 and it's role in your roundup.
I was recently reading around to see if it was worth upgrading to the Ultra-120 from the SI-128.
And in doing so, naturally, I came across reviews of it and other coolers as well.
Amongst these, were the SI-128, the SI-120, and some even included the XP-120. (All three of which I own.)
Now maybe you and I are reading different reviews,
but putting the SI-120 in the same class as the XP-120 is a bit of a stretch.
I've tested each of these three sinks in four entirely different rigs.
And in each rig, I got the same thing that I got after reading and comparing reviews:
there is a relatively substantial performance difference between the SI-120 and the XP-120.
But more importantly, the difference between the SI-120 and the SI-128, doesn't quite compare.
This is most likely due to the fact that the XP-120 was not only Thermalright's first 120mm fan heat sink,
it was the first 120mm fan CPU heat sink period.
So of course, there was much room for improvement.
Then it's successor was designed, and well... it was the SI-120, not the "XP-128."
Once again, I think your roundup is awesome and very helpful.
However, being that the difference between the SI-120 and the SI-128 is less than that between the XP-120 and the SI-120,
I think your roundup can actually be a bit misleading.
Some may get the impression that the difference between the SI-120 and the XP-120 is negligible, when in fact, it isn't.
More negligible, would be the difference between the SI-120 and the SI-128.
And by the way, why did you change the "A" section?
"Other recommended coolers" makes it sound like a "C."
I mean, I could see how some of those coolers would fit there, but not all of them.
If I was looking to buy a heat sink and didn't know better,
I would stay the hell away from anything in a section called "Other recommended coolers."
And if my cooler ended up in that section, hell, I'd be a little pissed. :hehe:
hehe...
I'm just messing with you.
Anyway thanks again for your hard work.
Definitely a worthy sticky. ;)

I think the CNPS9500, but i don't want to set it always on full speed
Here is a request to update sticky with a category or label in each category for hs/f assemblies that do not require mb removal. For instance, for the c2d you don't have to remove your mb with an arctic cooler 7 or a scythe infinity. I'm sure there are others but I'm still looking for them.
Just a thought as I know for many that is a consideration.
First of all, ^ is my first question.Quote:

Ah ok. I thought scythe infinirty because it has more fins(and bigger), and it has 5 long heatpipes, instead of 6 short heatpipes @ BT.Quote:

Is the diffrence well if you see the price change(so 10 euro worth?).
The big typhoon is 34 euro + 8 euro shipping, but i heard it is difficult to install(that's the main reaseon for BT VX), so i don't like that very much.
The scythe infinity is very good at installing, it has those standard intel pins. The tuniq tower needs a backplate.
So which should i take?(e6600)
BT is not hard at all to install
all huge heatsinks are nearly the same when installing
u have to remove the mobo, install the back plate, install the heatsink till the end on the cpu then install the mobo back
and the VX is just an updated version with variable fan speed controller and a higher rated fan at higher noise levels
for me i will get the Bt for the plus of cooling the pwm around teh cpu sockets and its 733T look
check this thread to see how they perform
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...4&postcount=20
I see that the big typhoon preforms equal to the tuniq tower!.Quote:

this review above was made AFAIK before lapping the Thermaltake
u can look in the first post where the reviews posted a link to another forum with many details
he tested the BT using the foam trick and other things that si known to give better performance
I agree with the higher airflow but the fins are specifically designed NOT to be loud. it all depends on what fans you use but stock it's pretty quiet.Quote:

TT BT = cheapest, then infinity then tuniq tower.
Is it worth the 10 euros for tuniq tower against infinity/BT?
also the Bt will cool the area around the cpu socket like the pwm which si very helpful
So the BT will be the best, and cheapest solution :D?Quote:

I have lapped both TTBT and the tuniq. I also use ceramique, as it seems to work best over other options, no gain with AS5 on my core sans-IHS.
But it may vary from person to person, situation to situation. But for me my tuniq has given me better performance over the TTBT.
Ok..Quote:

Just a note to everyone; I just noticed that a section on my aircooling faq has been cut off and it won't let me add anymore. The equivilant of a page or two with some of my heatsink links and all of my VGA coolers and HDD coolers info is gone. There seems to be aprox. 6 page limit on the length of my faq. There are some watercooling faq's and such with 20+ pages so I don't know what's up at the moment.
Ok, seems to be letting me add stuff ok. Somehow a huge chunk of my stuff just got deleted...wierd...I'm redoing it over the next few days or so.
How much difference would lapping make, maybe 2~3c at most ?Quote:

Good review but I don't like that the Ultra-120 and SI-128 are discredited because of the lame Intel mounting system. Too bad it wasn't done on AM2.Quote:

i really have a thought that the ultra 120 will be the king in the tower heatsinks and the si-128 to be the king of the non tower heatsink but it came out the other way round... i wonder if the mounting mechanism is really having some problem.... does anyone faced that issue before???

In my experience with the Infinity and the clip-type mounting. It's not that the base isn't flat, it's that at different times in the mounting process, there's a lot more strain on different edges on the IHS, and they imprint the base of the HSF.Quote:

3.6ghz for a conroe is pretty high, those two coolers won't be enough. I have my ac freezer 7 pro totally decked out (Lapped, Pressure Mounted) and it can only take my cpu to 3.4ghz until I start seeing 60c. I also have my IHS Lapped and I also am using the Zalman STG-1 Thermal Grease which is ever so slightly better than as5. The only time I can clock to 3.5 is when my 90cfm fan which I mounted on it is on full blast ;)Quote:

with higher CFM fan the Infinity will come out ahead (not by much though) due to tighter packed fins and thus more contact area with the forced airflow. you can see my more in-detail Infinity test here: http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=503
the UltraChill is same as MACS TEC COoling and Titan Amanda , while their performance is pretty good, I found them to be too noisy to even come close to the noise/performance balance of Scythe Ninja/Infinity and other large tower coolers

Great guide
except one little thing I would do....Either link a store that actually sells the A++ Amanda or let people know how hard it is to come by since its not being sold here in the US. I some time trying to find out where one could get it and the only distributor for the amanda in the US (inlandproduct.com) has listed the Amanda as "coming soon" or something for 5+ months and it still has not come.
As to people's comments about the unit? For people looking for end users results I would go to Hard OCP as some of them have the unit and have posted about it.
anyway thanks for the nice guide!
Performance PC has them, says they are in stock
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=20691
well I'll be damned....I went down the entire list of stores in the liquid cooling section and I missed that one :D
I owe you a drink :toast:
I may just buy one of these to mod one of these days. I built some good good Peltier rigs in the 90s and have loads of stuff laying around. Got this great silicone stuff from New Zealand too which kept everything nice and dry. I wish these new models would have gone to a 70W or 80W though. I can't see the condensation risk being too large unless you were in a very very cold room at that low rating. Having said that even with this small peltier those guys who take their PC's outside in winter to bench couldn't do so with this baby :)
gemini 2 or infinity ????
The Coolermaster is not really interesting with this review:
http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...oc.aspx?i=2978
they tested it with 2 noctuas... common, those have no pressure. they should have at least tried yates.
But they tried all the heatsinks with the same fan.
2 fans of 50 cfm at low speed is not really bad, this heatsink is just disapointing.
Why is there no mention of the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro in here?
It is quite good (Better than Scythe Rev. B with stock fan) and under $30.
Freezer can't handle high loads, not even in the same class. good sink for a med. overclock but not for a high end of the spectrum.
noctua is not exactly a good fan to mount on a sink no matter what the rated cfm are. no pressure whatsoever. check here:
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=497854
Cooler Master Hyper TX? It's very good for the price but I don't recall seeing a direct comparison at the moment to the Freezer.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103011
I only took it off my list because performance tests seemed to vary alot. Better than the Scythe Infinity in one test:
http://www.bigbruin.com/2006/hypertx_1
Also campatible with socket 775 here:
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...3118d0e02b0fb6
stock 0$ :D
ultra 90 should be almost as good. but yah, hard to find top of the class bellow $30.
I'll have to read up on it.
Oddly the Freezer 7 is $60 on newegg but can be had for $25 at SVC and other websites.
I plan to buy an e4300 within the next few weeks and overclock it.
I want to go as high as possible with a cheap aftermarket cooler (hopefully 3Ghz+).
Noise is not a factor, I've gotten used to the loud hum of my case fans.
I think this is your best choice:
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/thulcpucofor.html
I'm looking for a good aircoller now.
In the netherlands the prices are:
Tuniq tower 120: 36 euro
Scythe infinity: 36 euro
thermalright 120 extreme: 57 euro
Coolermaster geminii: 30 euro
What is the best choice for me, and looking at the price too, because I know the ultra 120 extreme is the best cooler at this moment, but it's very very expensive compared to the other top coolers? I have a e6600 and i want to overclock it to 3,6/3.7/3.8ghz(higest stable possible, with good temps).
either one will do. i personally like tuniq, it's a monster of a cooler :P but either way, you'll get similar performance from all of them. just keep in mind, even the best sink does not guarantee your overclock - that depends on the cpu.
Hmmmm I'll need to buy a fan but should stay under $30. (EDIT: Comes out to around $30 at SVC after shipping with this fan: http://www.svc.com/fba09a12u.html ).
Anyone recommend a good 90mm high CFM fan (again noise doesn't matter).
Can anyone find a review comparing this to the Ultra-120? That would really help me determine the actual performance of the Ultra-90.
Also if a heatsink comes with thermal compound already on it should I still apply arctic silver?
Or in the case of the TR Ultra 90, which comes with an offbrand thermal paste, is it worth using arctic silver instead?
Lastly, as far as lapping is concerned is it worth removing the nickel coat from the copper base on the HSF or IHS?
Anyone seen this guy before? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...4&Sku=ULT33186 what is the take on it? Other than expensive of course
