you must be using pc400 ram....you will need to use a divider on your ram...set it to 166....not 200 in the bios in the memory settings.....then try it again...if that works..give it a little more voltage, say to 1.475-1.5 and go up from there after seeing where it will go with stock voltages first.....

My 4800+ look like be the poor bad overclocker on earth.. it look will max around 2.9ghz... But... many thing look like strange acting from the mobo ( or the CPU)... hard way for reboot after 3hours of memtest 5 at 3030mhz.. ( Need a manual reset CMOS with jumper)... The CPU is strangely cold with 1.7V (27°C-28°C in idle)... some pins have benn touch with the thermal grease, i wait a tube for reinstall it and try clean that.. and hope this is the prob...

I'm having a strange problem with my S939 X2 4600+ Manchester.
Whenever I use a Vcore of 1.475v or higher , my system just suddenly shuts down without warning. It mostly occurs after being only 3 or 4 minutes in Windows.
With shutting down I don't mean a nice clean power off, or a BSOD.
I just suddenly powers off like someone pulled out the AC cord of my PSU
Here's the situation:
10x275 @ 1.425v is stable when running Dual Prime for 8 hours.
10x275 @ 1.450v is stable when running Dual Prime for 8 hours.
10x275 @ 1.475v System shuts down after 3/4 minutes in Windows
Now comes the weirdest part:
10x270 @ 1.475v System also shuts down.
It's like I can't run a vcore of 1.475 and higher... what's the deal?
Additional info of my system:
X2 4600+ Manchester, LDBFE 0607 SPAW "T"
Running at 10x275 @ 1.45v, CoreTemp reports 33ºC idle and 45ºC Stressed, LDT is to 3x275.
I removed the IHS, proc is watercooled by DTek WhiteWater.
Mobo is a DFI-nF4 Ultra-D 704-BTA, PSU is a OCZ PowerStream 520W.
2x1024 Crucial Ballistix running at 275MHz 3-3-3-7-1T @ 2.7v

It seems my Crucial Ballistix Z503 and X2 4600+ don't like eachother when running with a divider.
10x275HTT 11:12 is a no go @ 1.450-1.475v
12x230HTT 1:1 Is now Prime Stable @ 1.450v
11x260HTT 1:1 Is now Prime Stable @ 1.475v
Prices on these are dropping nicely. THink I Will be picking up a 4800. What is a good mobo to go along with it?

New bios makes it stabe for 24/7 use on air. And I'm loveing it. No use getting anything newer. I still have yet to turn up the volts.

it is always the luck of the draw... some older cpus do better, some newer ones do better.
you will never know unless it is one that has shown to be a great overclocker many times over....

I can't help but notice that your cpu actually is a 4800+ x2, mine's a 3800+ x2 and does as well as yours. It must be that mine wasn't tested as well as yours leaving the factory, because it does EXCACTLY the same, on air and water, I just got myself a DFI LANPARTY UT CFX3200-DR, and I must say, it's INSANE to see the difference, my old ABIT AN8-32X did well on clocking the cpu, but not on ram, now I see the difference on the workout I can give my cpu when the ram equally goes up :), but DAMN it's hot, I couldnt even take them out without burning my fingers before I stuck a 120mm sunon upon them :) Either way, I moved all the way up from asus a8r-mvp, to an8-32x and now with my dfi lanparty it seems that my chain of command did me well, cause i learned alot burning out the two previous boards and the lanparty is way more advanced than both the two before :)Quote:

I'm happy with the 2.8 ghz too, but I had to adjust it some cause of my ram and cpu wasn't happy with going 1:1, so I had to set my multiplier down to 9x and htt up to 305, going 2750 mhz now, but my pc4000 ram is now at it's stock 500mhz, and I'm not complaining with a 50 mhz loss on my cpu, my ram can go all the way up to 580mhz since it's samsung uccc chips on them, but I don't like it since it gets quite hot then, have a 120mm sunon fan blowing on the ram allready :cool:Quote:

Maybe your cpu won't go any further, but to make an attempt to se if it does or not you may try to lower your hypertransport multiplier, I see that it is over 1200mhz now, and these cpu's don't support more than 1000mhz, so by lowering this multiplier to 4x you in theory won't lose any effectiveness. I calculated yours to be at 5x now, 245 * 5x = 1225 ;) ... and in addition to this you may try to slack up the timings on your ram, I'm not familiar with ddr2 so I don't know what is appropriate here.Quote:

i have some questions about different core temps.
my x2 3800+ with e6 stepping and 2x512mb cache has different core temps.
idle: 10-12°C
load: 5-7°C
no ihs, at the moment clocked at 3020mhz@1,47v on dfi nf4 cooled bye sonic tower (three 120mm fans) and coollaboratory liquid pro.
can i do something, to improving the temp differences, or is it a normal effect, with technical background?
what are your experiences, suggestions ?

This temperature has to be wrong. If not, it seems your cpu is mistaken for a refridgerator ;) Is your cpu the 65watt or the 90watt? Mine is the 90watt. and usually is at 30 celcius.Quote:

51 celcius may be a bit hot at full load, but may also be just fine. If it's prime95 stable for 20-24 hours I think you just can leave it there. Idle temp is fine, mine varies between 30-35 idle with a copper cooler.Quote:

Are you sure your ram can do those speeds using cas3? Maybe try upping your vdimm, or loosening up your ram timings.

Temps are pretty screwy on most apps
try Everest Ultimate Edition, it gave me solid temps.
And ya, try loosening to cas4 or 5 when around 400mhz. I use cas6 past 400, pfft.
edit: Depending on ur cooling those temps might be right btw.

I dont know about the week and batch, but the reason why I got my 4200 x2 was because it was LDBFE, and when I checked (at the time) the most x2's above 3GHz (on air) were LDBFE's. But it can only give you an idea, if you know that the setup you will be putting it into is good for hi numbers then its got a better chance.Quote:

For those of u that are disappointed in your x2 clocks you may try breaking em in awhile before u judge the chip fully. I ran my Toledo 4600 at default volts 2750 b/c it wasnt terribly stable much higher but the just recently i did a ram swap for awhile, ended up going back to the old rams but in the process tried pushing the cpu a bit and sure enough im over 3gig with ease:) .
(I put this on AMD's forum but got no reply.)
How damaging/degrading would it be to go above AMD's max recommended voltage of 1.30V to 1.35V with my new air cooled 4200+ X2 s939 ?
Is it real destructive to go higher?
The highest I'm able to go and still obey AMD's recommended max voltage is 1.35v X 104% = 1.4040 volts as calculated, but actually dithers between 1.344 & 1.360 volts as reported by cpu-z. So that's right at the max recommended voltage red line.
At that level I can only OC to htt 239 X 11 = core clock of 2629 MHz, temp 54 deg C while OCCT! stress test is running.
However, by increasing the voltage above 1.4 actual, I can get the cpu core clock up to 2706 or probably higher.
If it's not harmful, I'd like to at least run it at 1.250 X 113% = 1.4125 as calculated, or 1.376 as actually reported. Or higher, say 1.3 X 110% = 1.43 calc, 1.39 actual. Or higher.
Guidance on voltage limit will be appreciated. Thank you.
(Somewhere I read that actual voltage itself wears down a cpu, quite distinct from temperature effects.)

I have 30 plus years with computers and my dad started working with them in the late 1950's and has never heard of a chip that just get worn out, they dont, there will always be something else that caused the chip to fail see above*
If the process goes quite a few orders of magnitude smaller the life might come down from 10,000 years to 9999. But I still think that most people will want to upgrade before they have used 1% of their CPU's lifespan.

Yes, that is what I said, and I think that the point that most people and you miss ...is that if you dont over volt or over heat the chip it will go on for as long as you need it to. just got my 939 4800 x2. it`s a ccb2e 0723vpmw. anybody know if these are any good?
They're nice chips, but I could never get much more than 2750 stable oc using it on Asus A8N32-SLI. Runs cool on air. I don't know much about good memory or mb settings for oc though. After finding out I couldn't get more than 15% oc, went back to stock settings.Quote:

Wow that sucks. Can't imagine the egg doesn't have at least a doa policy on all their products, even refurbs or restocks. If nothing else I'd think they would give store credit.
bent pins back as much as I could. Just tried to slowly get it to what my current x2 3800 can do and it was a no go. Temp difference between cores is always over 10*C. and the chip is SUPER hot. Goes to 57*c at 1.43v with my xp90 with 120mm fan. Much hotter than my 3800. Definitely sending it back...

at this setting its rock solid (full orthos load is 46*c), i can't get 3.4 to get orthos stable, i get a blue screen. I tried up to 1.525v to run orthos, load temp is about 50*c @ 1.5v. And i tried a number of cominations, could the NB not be getting enough voltage? or do you think i just hit the wall?

I have a 4600+ X2 manchester 939 on asus a8n-sli and get instability when overclocking even slightly. The mobo has latest bios 1014 and my driver has been updated as well.
I am running 4x512 ddr400 set to 333mhz in bios. Everything else for mem is auto.
I set HT multi to 4x
Set voltage to 1.4 for CPU
Set CPU to 233 w/12x for 2.8
It fails PRIME 95 in first 5 mins.
Please help! I'm new to overclocking but am learning fast!

I raised my vcore of cpu voltage (same thing right?) to the max my mobo would allow that being 1.45 and the temps were to high. Under load they were 57c. Is this too high? I'm really not worried about it if you all think it might be alright to run that hot.
I havent touched the memory besides lowering the FSB to 333 and then even one step lower I think it was 266. When I was unable to boot I lowered it to 333 and it booted and went higher on cpu then wouldnt boot and lowered once again to 266 and then it posted again.
My big concern is if I cant get it to run prime 95 for at least 15 mins then it's just not stable. I ran super pi at 2.95 yesterday (before I reset my bios) on the 32m setting it took 30mins but I really dont know what that means. Does that mean it's stable or what? I just dont think it's stable because it failed prime and crashed in 3dmark.

Well 2.95 may be too high for that cpu/mobo/ramset
I saw 1.5v on the CPU-Z shot- that may be too much for THAT chip, I don't know how accurate that temp of 57 is, as i have no idea if Asus has any temp bugs, as i don't own anything Asus.
Did you try and run just 2 sticks of ram?
At what speed WILL it pass Prime?

Something is obviously failing, and it's difficult for me to tell what it is, it could be just a crappy clocker.
I would figure out what speed it IS stable at, with decent temps @ stock vcore, and then go up from there.

Here is my overclock that i just finished. It ran for about 7 mins.
As you can see my voltage is lower than before... I am going to raise it once more to see if I can even run it stable at this speed yet.
I dont want to try 2 sticks because that is not what I am going to use. My goal is to have the fastest overal performance. I would rather not go without the extra gig.
The only speed that i've gotten it to pass prime is stock...
The fail with little overclock i'm refering to was yesterday it failed at 205mhz with voltage in auto and ram set to 400mhz.
My psu is xion 600 watt power real... how do i check the rails?
my hsf is a thermalright xp-90 w/92mm fan. I think it is running at 2000 rpm. I can tell from two diff programs. I dont know if that's fast enough as the temps were in the 50's during loads. I dont know how accurate that is two but got it from two programs. I lapped my hsf so it should be at it's max performance. I used right amount of arctic silver five.
I understand that you don't want to run 2 sticks full time, I was just asking if you TRIED it, because of the load involved running 4 sticks.
You mentioned that you are new to overclocking, well it takes a bit of twiddlin' to figure out what is the culprit, sometimes alot of twiddlin'.
Most folks run 12-24 hrs to determine stability.
I haven't even touched on software programs (that have been called culprits) running in the background, or usb devices...
You said you were just learning, but that you are learning fast, but it looks to me like you are just going too fast.
I used to use Hexus Prime(this is a fast bench), and ramp up clockspeed until it failed, then bumped up vcore/vdimm/chipset voltage etc... to make it happen, then repeat until it was maxxed out ( at that point, no matter how much voltage ya feed the system,it will not pass).
Then I would back it off a bit, and run longer instances of prime95 or SP to make sure it would be stable at full load for longer time periods.
Most folks run fans over the over volted parts to keep them cool (better chipset coolers, fans over ram + regulation circuit, etc..).
I always payed attention to the temps, in case that was the culprit.

Alright... i am probably going way to fast. I just want some sort of results.
Right now i'm thinking that it really isnt any problem besides maybe that my proc and mobo just really arent that overclockable... I will continue to try though.
I was able to get 2.78 for 15 mins stable on prime 95. Last time I failed prime I raised voltage one notch and lowered frequency one notch. I also raised cas latency to 3 from 2.5 (I dont know if that makes any difference but I was noticing on this forum that everyone else has theres set at 3).
So I decided to be brave and overclock my 8800gt too. I raised the fan speed to a steady 60% and clocks to 695/970 and on my fan control panel and PSU turned all fans up to super high till the computer just started to lift off... then ran 3dmark06 and it DIDNT CRASH:clap:
I'm very happy with improved score over stock clock which was 8409 and previous project which was in low 7k.

I would PERSONALLY leave the 8800 at stock until ya find the max stable mobo/cpu/mem speeds.
THEN I would adjust the 8800gt.
If you try to do too many things at once, it's hard to tell what is causing the problem.
Try to focus on 1 thing at a time, that way you will have a much better chance at success.
What Brand+MODEL of ram is that(most ram can run that speed easily at Cas 2.5)?

BTW- Your PROBABLY looking at 2.7- 2.9 for that combo IMO.
Maybe you'll get lucky and get a bit higher, I dunno.... it does happen.
Installed my ram today making it 4gb instead of 2. Got some beep codes and it reset cmos :down:
So im at 3ghz now instead of 3.3 :mad:
I still havn't ran orthos yet to see if 3 is stable on stock volts. I know if was before...

Right now i'm running a 4600+ X2, Asus A8N-SLI with 4x512 sticks of Centon DDR400 ram. I cant get it to pass super pi at even stock speeds. I took two sticks out to see if that was the problem and still not passing.
Any suggestions?
