As far as I can see I agree, all the same. The key is what cause the issues. Like our old friend GTL, it looks like the QPI is sensitive around 4GHz. Nearly everyone can hit 200 Bclk, but a few drop off by 210, and nearly all by 220.
1.4v will get nearly everyone to 4GHz, that is, no one that high has reported being unable to reach that level. By 4.2GHz the voltages are higher. 21x210 is 4.4GHz and fewer have made it there. All air cooled have temp problems by now, and most waters are getting hot. There could be as much as 350w in the processor by this speed, making the core to water 42C or so with a good water block. Anything but the best radiator will add 5-10C to that above ambient. Those on air are getting core temps in the 80s.
Few have gotten beyond that on air or water. None reporting prime stability. Those on air report temps in the 90sC range. I would imagine nearly all should be capable of 21x200 or 21x205 with adequate cooling.

Kensek, nice points. I keep saying that, but people are expecting miracles right now. This technology is ***brand new***. It's a miracle it works at all really. That's not a slam, but a compliment to the people who have made it work as well as it does. It's gonna take time to get the BIOS's worked out, the brand new X58 Chipset Drivers worked out, and the brand new ICH10R worked out. There are gonna be new drivers and BIOS's versions for all of these things. ANy one of these things (or a combination of them) could be holding max clocks back.

Hi guys. New member here, been on OCN for a little while but just recently discovered this forum. Have somewhat of a build thread running over there, but really been following the i7 920 OC discussion there, and spent the past few days going through this thread.
With the 965 and P6T, 4.0 was so easy that I didn't feel it was worth shouting about. Understanding the impact of voltages, ratios and such to get >1GHz OC has been a bit frustrating. I can up the voltage (labelled QPI/DRAM core in the P6T bios) but due to the cost of this CPU I am trying to keep my voltages pretty close to specs - VCore is 1.37V (with LLC enabled, it only varies by +/- .05V), and Uncore voltage up now to 1.325V. I'm sure more voltage would help, but - I'm afraid! :)
I am trying to find optimal performance for the system overall, not just a trophy-winning CPU clock. I'll try some Sandra tests to see if I can find a relationship between overall performance and Uncore speed, at least, the point at which a low speed Uncore impacts overall performance. Problem is, what is "overall performance"?

The TJmax exists for a reason - that's the temperature that, if exceeded, for extended periods of time, may begin to shorten life span, and you're never going to be at that temperature for long because it will throttle and kick back down. Maybe i've missed something but when was the last time you heard of a cpu dying because of heat and not high voltage?

My i7 920 arrives tomorrow, can't wait to see what I get. Unfortunately, I do not have a tracking number on the motherboard yet so I don't know if it is coming tomorrow or not. It's coming from a different warehouse but I paid for overnight delivery so, if it did ship, it should be here as well tomorrow. NewEgg has been having some major server issues as, in addition to only receiving one tracking number, my order status on the website is still only in the "verified" stage which is step 2 of 5. I also didn't receive said tracking number until this morning and it shipped on Friday. Definite weirdness. Anyways, I'm rambling...

With all the high temp/volt, high clocked overclocks I was wondering if any of you had seen how high these chips can OC on extremely low voltage. BTW, I had no problems running my QPI/Dram Core (Asus Terminology) at Voltages up to 1.65v on P6T Deluxe.
Just haven't tried higher than that as it seems to have no effect above 1.6v and above 1.65v is too much voltage IMO.:eek:
I am watercooling my chip pretty good, so far My max temps are about 60-65c on the hottest core, so extreme high temps are not an issues for me.

I have the R2E and I found running Uncore below QPI does not work too well on my board. Try running QPI with 22x multiplier when using 180MHz BCLK. 24x multiplier will not work as it is too high (24x180MHz > 4GHz which is max for QPI).Quote:

Guys, I'm going to order an i7 940 tomorrow and swap out my i7 920. I'm convinced that the BCLK set to anything above 191 on my Asus RE2 is causing me problems.
I think that going from 20x190 plus HT enabled to 21x190 HT enabled, will enable me to go from 3.8GHz/4.0GHz to 4.0GHz 4.2GHz prime stable (where I really want to be). This obviously can't be done with the i7 920.
Lowering my memory multi and/or raising my Vcore seems to make no difference when @ 20x200. However, lower the BCLK from 200 to 191 and my rig will prime (small FFTs) for 14.5 hours+ (have not tried longer). Obviously, my DRAM, QPI and Uncore frequencies are slightly lower (1523, 3438 & 3056), however, the 8:9 ratio still remains. 1.4v Vcore, 1.35v QPI, 1.8952v CPU PLL & 1.65v VDimm by the way. Everything else set to AUTO.
dejanh is absolutely spot-on with his 20x200 observations, as I have had little success with this combo. I really am starting to think it's more about frequencies/multipliers than voltage now. I think I have found the best voltages and timings for my board & RAM, just need to get a 'slightly' higher multiplier me thinks now?

Basically the cores temps are the ones to trust - they are designed & calibrated by Intel to safeguard your CPU from too much heat - but the sensors are only accurate at high temps .. and even then nobody has a clue what the absolute true temperature is (since actual Tjmax is unknown for each core) ..
If you have an i7 though - the sensors have improved in accuracy right down to Idle temps .. and if you follow Unclewebbs calibration guidlines for Realtemp you can get pretty good readings ..
As for CPU Case temp .. If your readings are that much higher sounds like you have a similar problem to me .. ASUS PC Probe totally screws my CPU temp readings .. so I dunno which program to trust ..
Core temps are calibrated at the factory by intel and are read directly from the cpu by programs like real temp, and are the only temps that matter (especially on core i7's where they are more accuate), as they are the temps that intel calibrated to protect the cpu.Quote:

The Corsair DDR3-2000 7-8-7-20 GT needs 1.65v on QPI and 1.65 v Dimm

All the new fast DDR3-2000 Ram that run at 1.65vDimm need 1.65 QPI volts also.
This is needed since Uncore must run at 2X DDR3 Frequency.

Strange problem I just noticed on my P6T bios with my 920. It won't let me raise the CPU Ratio (miltiplier) above 20. It says something about a min od 12 and a max of 20. Is there a way of getting around this???
Well, :), a 940 would let you raise it to 22? Or a 965 to 256 I believe. Turbo effectively gives you 21. And turning off hyperthreading I believe gives you 22. However, it may not give you better performance.
