Ladies, any chance we can stow the bickering and personal attacks and behave like civil people?
No need to make all this stuff so personal. Unless you are a marketer or have huge stakes in a given companies future... why care so damned much? Spend more time using and enjoying said products instead of fighting about why others should and shouldn't use them...
On point, does anyone know if quiet mode / user mode is hardware selectable (ala 6970) or a software option this time?
Some more results R290X vs GTX 780
Attachment 131591 Attachment 131592
*The R290X is eating the GTX 780 at high resolution, these 512bits in normal resolutions should not make a big difference ... but from 1600p being decisive this ...
Yeah, it's kinda a premature ejaculation thing to cry wolf regarding a reference 290X on air OC performance with 100% fan speed & its loudness, while any other high end, reference cards that i know will behave similarly when their fan pushed to the limit, more or less. Any high end reference card with 100% fan speed = loud, and 290X OC potential is still to be known, nothing is set on stone.
It's quite amusing, isn't it ? :yepp:
I'm wondering about the same, it says nothing about the overclock in the article
http://www.techpowerup.com/191312/ra...ats-titan.html
nossy23, any other links?
People, we may as well discuss loudness of waterfalls and how that affects loudness of gpus because SOME people live near them ...
To teh point, there is no data for R290X loudness. So theres nothing to discuss on the matter.
As for PurePC.pl scores, i can vouch that this is pretty not biased site, which normally is pretty professional in their approach, they never do fakes also.So theres that.
As for my own speculation, i think they got AMD`s blessing on releasing those few scores (high res results only) but the testing and platform was their own.
New Hawaii chip looks like a monster performer :). OC and CF two of those and it will be basically untouchable.
I think he's right. Upper bar looks like a 290X overclocked.
I also guess that 2nd bar and third bar are 290X and 780 both@stock.

That wattage.
Sounds like its back to to 1200w+ PSUs for triple setups.

I guess my 1600w is good to go!
Benches came originally from over here:
http://videocardz.com/45753/amd-rade...ster-gtx-titan
"The leaker claims that his sample could run at 1020 MHz core clock and 1250 MHz memory clock. That would be the peak performance for the new Radeon (we don’t know yet if this is the reference clock). You may think that 1250 MHz clock for the memory is not very high, but that’s due to wider memory bus. This is in fact 5Ghz effectives peed with a bandwidth of 320 GB/s. The Radeon R9 290X will operate at lower clock (something between 800 to 900 MHz), It has dual-BIOS feature for a reason. "
Thanks for the link but I can't find anywhere in the article about the R9 290X was OC vs reference clocked Titan when tested. It does does not make much sense to compare video cards like that.
Also from the link:
Nothing about overclock in the charts.Quote:
Speaking of power consumption, the leaker also posted his results in this field. Supposedly AMD Radeon R9 290X would consume less power than GTX TITAN (357W vs 372W). EDIT: Since we actually found the original source and thus charts, I suggest you take a look at them and see how each card performs.
I thought the operating clock range for stock 290x is 800-1000Mhz with clocks sittings at 940-960Mhz in vast majority of gaming workloads?
Well provided the GPU clock speed in this chart, from the same link you posted is correct, that's not overclocking.
Attachment 131604
The article you linked was edited and made up from two sources. Most likely all the benchmark come from Chinese forum posts and a lot might have been lost in Google translation.
Good news is we have ONLY few days before the real benchmark. I doubt the R9 290X is going to be faster than the 1000 USD NV Titan. Maybe true in some games and probably more so in high resolutions.
Maybe those charts with 2 bars for 290X mean the "quiet mode" and "uber mode"? I read somewhere that those modes define TDP limits, and thus the card will boost higher on higher tdp limits.
AMD Radeon R9 290X makes the first appearance in a store
Attachment 131613
Maybe one of these cards is yours:D
hahahah they forgot to put windows 8.1 compatible banner on the box :D :D :D
I'll grab a few later when I have time. Just cut a rectangle hole into the shroud between the gpu heatsinks and taped that fan into the hole pretty much. Nothing special, just fresh air for the second gpu.
I was going to duct it with the fan laying down but got lazy.

R9 290X Card will cost??
$800:eek:
$700:shakes:
$650:up:
all the gtx780 at ple are $850+ other than a palit card at $739
if the first bf4 pre order prices are under $800au then id say $650-700au is in with a fair chance once normal stock appears
7970 -> vanilla version with 4 games
290x -> premium version with 1 game
AMD better evolve their bundles or I'll go green this time
I was hoping for much better price. Maybe around 600 USD max 650.
The XFX Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Bundle $799.00 you posted is being offered by Australian retailer.
http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?...CategoryID=468
Guys, AMD hasn't released the official msrp. If I'm not mistaken they've released something like 3000 pre-order bundles world wide. So retailers are just gouging.
Just like with every launch that I can remember don't go by pre-order prices. I am always shocked that some of you guys who have been here for at least as long as me post those pre-order prices and go "omg xxxx is going to be so expensive". It happens on every launch without fail.
I never trust pre-order prices especially in my country where pre-order price of iphone 5s 16gb in some places was 1000Euro.
I'm happy to see gpus bundled with decent games again for a change... Last bundled game I liked was YEARS ago when ATI had their HL2 / steam bundle. More than not included games have just no longer been included to cut costs for the board partners. Trouble is the prices didn't drop for the customers as a result more than not.
All in all AMDs aggressive push to better their developer relations has gotten Nvidia attention. Mere months ago Nvidia only offered free to play game credit... now they are at least trying to match AMDs offers.
Tell me Sony/Microsoft, is your PS4/Xbox One including a nice handful of games with purchase... I'm waiting *crickets*
yoda, "Begun the bundle wars have... '
So anyone wana buy? :p:
http://www.casetac.com/index.php?rou...BP&language=en
Remember the Asus 7970 directcu ii? they didn't use a reference pcb so you couldn't flash the GHz bios onto it...and then it turned out they used "bad" voltage regulators so you couldn't give it much more voltage.
Bundle wars are cool, I just bought two 7970s and got $40 back by selling the game bundle...that's guaranteed $ back, unlike a rebate.
you can increase the v a lot i had my 7970dc2t up to 1.45v with software verified with a multimeter trouble is it made no difference to clock speeds vs 1180mv it still topped out at 1204mhz and this was the typical result with this card so they bodged somthing
many of the 79#0dc2 models were totally voltage locked against software adjustment though which is a really :banana::banana::banana: thing to do
the heatplate on the card only half contacted ~3 memory chips the rest it made no contact even with thick pads and tightening it wouldnt help it just didnt fit the card

Newegg USA has R9 290X listed from 4 vendors, but no price. All listed as coming soon - auto notify.
All have Battlefield 4 game included, limited offer.
Newegg Canada has the same listing.
Edit, the R9 290 are also listed
^^ that's old news from a few pages back
Little issues like that are of no consequence, Nobody expects everyone to read every single post on every single page all the time.
I didn't know the NDA on both cards does not end at the same time. Guess because there was not much rumors about the R9 290 or I was not looking for them.

He doesn't sound too impressed. The card seems to have problems clocking down in 2D. 50+ ?C in idle is quite high.
Im not sure GPU-z is compatible, it look like it make jump the GPu to 1000mhz instead of 304 in idle.. ( CCC show 45?C ) I dont speak about the temp, but about the clockspeed.
But even at 304 MHz, 45?C is quite high. If the card is only generating about 15W of heat on a 440 mm2 die, where is the problem?
probably power stats not working correctly, 1000mhz in idle will give you quite high temp. :p
Lack driver, it says that exists a problem between 2D and 3D modes, and so had to turn off the aero windows. He confirms that the GPU-Z is not working and maybe causing a problem (instability)
The guy sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing. The GPU-Z bug was fixed already.

290X is not so expensive, so don't be fooled by crazy pre-order prices :D

Amd failed on the cooler again :/
Wow 290x is shaping up to be a BEAST lets hope the real reviews are even better numbers !!!
How about:
- AMD made quiet fan profile for idle and load,
- AMD on-die temp sensor is not calibrated,
- someone is testing in the middle of desert mid-day,
- someone is testing in uATX case with no fans,
- and so on :D
Let's wait for reviews and then decide to buy stock or custom solution from AMD partners.
If the price is 550 dollar, honestly, what ever Nvidia does, their high end is going to be priced uncompetitively. Nvidia needs to discontinue their regular gtx 780 line and only sell OC editions at the same price as 290x, while additionally if Nvidia wants to price their gtx 780 ti at 650 or more, it better perform atleast 10 percent better.
However the noise and wattage concern me. Particularly if I want to overclock this for gaming.
I couldn't care less if it idles at 50C, it won't hurt anything doing so, and if it is because they make the fan barely spin at idle then that's just fine. I mean, really, who cares if it idles 35C or 50C? Load is where the temp matters more, and at idle silence is more important.
At the same time, part of me also doesn't care too much since I watercool anyway :p: And then in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't affect me at all as the odds of me buying a new card anytime soon is next to nothing as my 7950 is doing just fine :D
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/2448/oap1.png
100 MHz overclock on the GPU, about the same score as a GeForce GTX 780 at 1250 MHz - pretty damn good going.
Few hours...Im looking forward for Computerbase, Hardwarecanucks, Pctuning, Techpowerup, Guru3D, Tomshardware and few others reviews.
AMD Radeon R9 290X Video Card Review - AMD is launching the Radeon R9 290X today. The R9 290X represents AMD's fastest single-GPU video card ever produced. It is priced to be less expensive than the GeForce GTX 780, but packs a punch on the level of GTX TITAN. We look at performance, the two BIOS mode options, and even some 4K gaming.
This review will be published at 11:01PM CST tonight.

IMO Techpowerup is hands down the best. The rest Flanker has listed are not bad either :).
It will be more. If are CPUs launched, Im reading all reviews aroudn the world. This is my fetish since Phenom 65nm Agena time. So for one CPU product Im reading around 30-50 reviews in next 14 days :). Sometimes Im downloading reviews to my HDD :). And in last years Im finding all interesting and performance chips to my collection - next fetish :D. From GPU part I give up, because its very time consumed (I was only reading 10-12h per day reviews and many days). For GPUs now maybe only 10 reviews :)
I would have to agree recently. Too many website are shrinking their testing suite to 6 titles. Particularly when results can be lop-sided for one game or two, its really skews the overall results. They seem to have the most comprehensive power testing too.
I like to mix in hardware canucks because I know they record in game results rather than a canned benchmark and Hardocp too for their unique testing.
I am wondering, since they are testing 4k results, did AMD give every tester a 4k screen?
If the R9 290X price is 550 USD and the rumored benchmarks are true, it sounds as very good deal. If that's true Nvidia will have to reduce few prices because there is also R9 290 coming next week.
If GTX 780 Ti is at least 10% faster than R9 290X, than it's going to be about as much faster than the NV Titan (if the rumored R9 290X benches are true). That's going to make some Titan owners not too happy,( specially the more recent buyers). Even many recent GTX 780 buyers are not going to be too happy I still see the price at newegg $660 ( most prices even higher).
Well there are way too many if and speculations above, good we have only about 6 hours to wait to find the true.
As per your overclocking concerns, I believe ALL cards are noise to run over clocked on reference air cooler heat sinks, but I did not have any Nvidia card card recently so anybody can correct me if I'm wrong. :)
Looking forward to the reviews as Flanker point it out , hopefully at 12:01am I can get hold of one or two R9 290X online , f5f5f5f5f5f5f5 all over again starts at 12:01am
I have quite a few gripes with TPU. They use older drivers in their reviews a lot of the time. Also, every benchmark is a time demo. I've not once ever seen TPU ever mention having an issue in game. I consider Wizzard to be the worst offender when it comes to judging a video card by nothing other than average framerate. Its one of the reasons that microstutter was swept under the rug for so long.
I like what Wizzard does. Its nice to see a large suite of games but I can't take much from the review due to the testing methodology.
[H] uses too few games for me to bother with their reviews tbh. I do agree that Skymtl's reviews over on Hardware Canucks are my favorite. I'm also glad to see that he is now doing their cpu reviews and using his testing methodology. I'm very happy to see that.Quote:

I'm also very fond of the tech report and their emphasis on smoothness. I am so happy that someone decided to start that trend. Thats bought about some big changes recently.
techreport fan. Very professional reviews and articles.
Titan owners should be mad at themselves for buying a 1000 dollar card. No one forced them to buy it and even cards like gtx 780 classifieds which can be 10% faster in some reviews are already 699.
I wish no one bought Titan in the first place and there was a price drop in place already. People buying 1000 dollar single GPU videocards sends a bad message to videocards makers as I have said earlier.
I think anyone from a mile a way should have known titan was a bad long term investment. That is of course unless they really need 6gb of memory and uncrippled DP. In addition, I would hope the people who bought titan have a lot of disposable income to the point where such a purchase doesn't cause them that much grief.
What about AnandTech reviews, nobody likes them?
AT is now just "ok" I suppose. It's their own fault.
Pretty exciting...I hope my two 7970s hold their own significantly since I spent my R9 290x money on them instead of waiting. If the price is $550 I will be impressed (and wish I waited), but I doubt it will be.
techreport and pcper
Bugger. These are NZ $1399. I guess that counts me out. :-( $300 more than the GTX780.
