@emu pretty sure your ram is causing the problem.

Thanks for all the help guys but well I am a dumbass. Enuff said.
This is sortof what it was. The CPUs werent locked in in the socket and hence orange lights and no post.
Now I do have a post and I have the error code Processor missing microcode which probably means I need to flash the motherboard right?
And finally we are crunching! :D
These Sossamans are truly awesome once you get them working especially if you are a noob like me! Might have to get a few more! ;) :D
It took me a bit to figure out why I could not get the cpus in the sockets. Dave was a big help to me in getting the font panel connections setup. I was brave enough to call him. Just glad to have someone like him to help out when needed.
That was my pleasure. Could listen to that southern accent all day..
Now you should have been here the other night when a certain jcool got a call from me in Germany..
Thank God his English is better than my German!
Hey emu?
What's your tel number?
( Now watch him run and hide in the outback!)
YEAH! ;) I just felt like a dumbass. But I think I am in love with Sossa, Dave so dont tell the wife! :D
I take it this was your last option!
Dave you were in Germany? :D
Dave my number is 555-1385
I chat with loonym most weekends lately on Messenger. Mind you quite often he has to put up with my drunken antics :ROTF:
Anymore good deals on sossamans out there?
i got a call from someone!
* i wonder who that was :p
I did the same thing when i put my first one together-thought the board was bad then went onto the nest one till I saw the screws! Just didn't feel like taking it apart-but you gotta do what you have to do! Speaking of Sossaman's I need to get downstairs and restart those babies, the power went out here a couple of days ago and they are not on!
Anyone got an extra backplate for sammy?
The $2.95 plate from Performance PC's..
The one called "Xeon backplate"
They are out and I need one.
@ Movieman: I believe u have Raptors hooked up to ur sammy - to which controller may I ask? the ICH5-R or the SI3124?
I need a backplate too.
What bolt pattern does Sammy use again? 604 or 771?
Because I found these for 771 but I'm guessing it isn't that bolt pattern.
http://www.avadirect.com/product_det...asp?PRID=11409
So would those plates work then? Since the sinks just have to screw into them?
thought so..
***HEADS UP GUYS***
for any of u considering putting a Raptor in Sammy, there may be a chance it wont work.. I recently was trouble shooting an Abit IC7-Max3 - yes I know, totally diff mobo - but it has the same SB: ICH5R. There seems to be an incompatibility issue between the ADFD/AHFD (16MB cache) Raptors & the ICH5R! @ POST, it'll take forever to 'Detect IDE drives' & then it never will, so when u go to install windows for ie, it will say there are no HDDs to install to.. I am not the only person to have come across this problem.. I have confirmed that GD (8MB cache) Raptors *do* work - MMs work plus I grabbed a friends GD & tested on the IC7 aforementioned.. if anyone does have an ADFD Raptor working of the ICH5R, please post, then it would appear the prob is IC7 specific.. I have nooo idea if the VelociRaptors are compat
I think I'll do some more soldering today  ............ ;) :D
FYI: I contacted a friend at Intel today and asked him to ask around and if they came up with a tray or two of those Merom MP's sitting on a shelf or a tray or two of the sossaman 2330's to give me a yell and I think between us all we could take them off their hands and add some $$ to Intels bank account.
I'm figuring it's ( in their mind) such old tech they'd jump at the chance to turn them into $$..
And you KNOW there has to be some of them hanging around!;)
Depending on price, and performance compared to the 2GHz Sossaman, and availability, I might be interested in upgrading sammy. :D
Compare the improvement from 1.6ghz to 2.0ghz then you will see the difference from 2.0 to 2.3ghz. :D
i'm now looking to build a sossaman since my q6600 sucks up almost 300w when overclocked. however, when i build this, i'll be killing two birds with one stone, so i have a few questions first (so excuse my n00bness). will there be any problem having this "quad" crunch at 100% while still being able to do daily desktop functions on this server platform? i don't think the lack of expansion slots will be a problem since it already has onboard video and sound, but i just need to crunch while being able to run excel/word and do all internet functions. also, what's the cheapest EATX case for this besides ghetto cardboard?
any help on finding the cheapest possible CPU's, heatsink, and memory? or does anyone want to get rid of theirs?
depending on price + shipping (and intel) i might jump on the bandwagon movieman :D
Hey Dave better be a big tray if he finds something for you:D
Lot's of people interested at some superduperultradeluxe chips.
p.s. I might also be interested at going DP for once.
I want the free :p
Now pm me with your contact info!
:slobber::slobber::slobber::slobber:
Must have! Dave! Must Have! :D
I just used something like this.
Dave, I'd hit that like a wrecking ball. I'd build two more systems if intel could find a tray of those bad boys!
count me in for 4 of the merom chips also :).
atleast u have a sossaman rig
*cough!
Cought
Dave!
I think I've just stumbled upon something interesting..
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?W...source=froogle
Could someone confirm if these are or not the same blocks that the 'Intel ABBHEATSINKS' use?
They look exactly the same
trying to search for the specs of the meroms or 2330's and i'm getting a little confused. can some post the specs of these chips dave is trying to get?
Nope,
they are Meroms
SP.
That second link is to some dual core processors, not singles.
Core Duo T7800
are not the correct versions
these are pin incompatible.
Yeah, this is a must.
hmm Dave, care to chime in on what exactly you're asking intel for? how did you know about these if there are no published specs?
I just want 1 working !
If I don't get a board soon. I'm not looking for any more modfications!
:p
hmm I don't know didn't see it. what about this one? is this a sammy?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
i don't wannna threadjack from this sossaman build, but how does this AMD build compare:
- K8N-DRE-2GBL-PB $19
- 2 AMD Opteron 270 Dual-Core 2GHz CPU Processor S-940 + $40
how do memory prices of ECC DDR compare to ECC DDR2? and what i'm really interested in is total power consumption and point output, but it looks like this platform will lose to sossaman? according to wikipedia, each apteron 270 chip sucks up 95w? that's nearly triple what the intel chip needs.
anyone running a rig with a 4-pin CPU power connector instead of 8-pin?
Yes. You can't stick it in the side that it fits though. Once CPU runs off the left side, one runs off the right. Because of the low power of the CPUs, you can get away with just pushing the 4 pin in the middle of the 8 pin socket. That way, each CPU gets on half of the 4 pin plug. Little bit of a tight fit because of the keying of the socket but it'll fit :D Or you could trim the key on the 4 pin plug, or get a 4 to 8 pin adapter if you don't want to shoehorn or modify the plug.
well that was a fail... i'm over it.. how much do 2x SL8WT fetch these days?

OR
Buy my whole set for 150 + shipping :D
I'd be interested, but I don't have the time or energy to build another system from scratch, even though I've only ever seen one Sossaman based system on fleabay (and the seller never answered any of several questions about the item)
Ahhh there's the other three components I don't have, a SAS hdd, a server power supply and the money to buy any or all of it.
I believe this is the PSU I have for mine
All in all the system costs about 160-200 for the board, cpus, memory. You just just need a power supply.. 30-50 and hard drive.. 20-40, $12 for the backplates and $20 for the sinks so in a little less then $300.
No SAS on these boards. I have a SATA drive on the one, and an IDE drive on the other. Just uses a standard 24 pin PSU (preferably with an 8 pin CPU power but as mentioned above there are ways around that ;)). So heck use an old 20GB IDE hard drive and a random PSU and there ya go ;)
Pity I don't have the money.
I also have a pair of 2.0Ghz cpu's which are not being used. (+ heatsinks + backplate)
Joy. Everything a guy could need to get one of these running is sitting around in XS folk's spares bins and my total budget runs to $50AUD. :(
I feel stupid now, thanks
I've been stewing over that lot, too, but won't have the money any time soon. Grab them if you want them ... just put them to good use, k.
