Yes, I think you did mis understand. There are 3 power connectors on the DX38BT. A 2x12, a 2x4 by the CPU, and a 1x4 next to the HD audio link. I had the first two connected, but not the last one. The 1x4 is not required, but recommended if you use video cards that use over 75w. I don't know how much the 4850 uses, but I figured it won't hurt to try. So far it's running stable for about a day.Quote:

Are they overpriced? I certainly understand those who think they are. I don't think so, but they do cost a lot more than most are willing to pay. The thing is, many people have no problem spending $660 on a GTX 280, or $1000 on a QX CPU, or $600 or more on RAM. In comparison to all those components, I don't think $400 is a lot for a good case. Especially if you intend to put a lot of hard drives in there with some Raid cards, and some external drive bays as well, like me :D.

Hi everyone,
This is my first post here, but I have been reading the previous posts I found since January or so, by xMrBunglex and others.
I was hoping to build a stable, bug-free, reliable system, so I went with Intel as many other people have done because of their supposed reliability, engineering department and customer service. The BadAxe being outdated now and not really in stock, I bought the DX48BT2 two weeks ago. I have been disappointed, as I have found more bugs and issues than with the previous systems I have assembled...Anyway, I have a couple of questions and suggestions for the experts here ;o) based on numerous tests I have done over the past week and a half:
1. I found a bug during the first boot sequence of my motherboard with my configuration. I know that the motherboard is supposed to cycle power on/off after BIOS changes or other hardware changes (which is a little strange to begin with!) -- however, on my first boot ever, the power cycled on/off twice, then booted. Subsequent boots are fine. Then I installed Vista and updated from the March 2008 BIOS to the May release, and now it only cycles on/off only once on the first boot, then displays a message saying that the POST was not successful and asking if I want to go in the BIOS to check options – even though all settings are unchanged, and subsequent boots are fine, so there are no issues (subsequent boots, reboots, etc, Vista are OK). This would happen again if I disconnect the power supply from AC, wait for the LED next to the RAM to go off, then wait again another minute (or keep the power button pressed), then re-plug the power. Some people apparently do not experience this issue; I have talked to Intel, and they did tests on their own motherboard, and found the same issue (POST unsuccessful message on first boot)!!! The two techs at Intel doing the test I asked them to do on their own computer were surprised. Although on their PC it was random (less than half the time on more than ten tests that they told me they did) – for me it's all the time. In each case, there is the DX48BT2, DDR1333, and a 45 nm quad processor. They have escalated the issue to engineering and are currently investigating, since they saw the bug on their own configuration!! The first boot with correct settings should not be unsuccessful. The POST message is not because of the watchdog seeing the power removed on contrary to what an Intel tech first said (they know think it's a bug with the standby power not being applied correctly at first or something). Also, the fans spin on very high no matter if you have the BIOS control the fans or not – only on subsequent boots they return to normal control. There is the same bug with or without the watchdog as well. I'm now waiting on Intel. I've done other tests with other power supplies, other memory brands, even nothing else plugged to the mobo (no keyboard, even no graphics card), the issue on the first boot after applying power the first time is the same no matter what.

2. I found another bug with my motherboard, with the SMBus controller (SMBUS – 2930 in system device in the device manager). On my second re-installation of Vista, a popup message in the taskbar said that no driver for the device were found. I did not see that message the first time but maybe missed it because it appears only once long after installation of the drivers. In the device manager, it shows no exclamation point, no error. But if I right click on it, properties: in Device Status, it says "no drivers installed". But on the next tab, Driver, it shows the Intel driver and date! Clicking on driver details of the same tab says: no drivers found! WTF?! I reinstalled Vista from fresh, nothing else but just that, no other drivers or programs, same bug. Then I contacted Intel, tried to uninstall, reinstall the driver, same. The version is from the CD, 8.3.1.1010 from October 2007, same as the website. Then the tech guy said to look in the general chipset page of Intel's website, and there you search and can find the INF driver for Intel series 4, dated June 2008, version 9.xxx, but it's not shown on the page of the DX48BT2!!! The tech explained that it's because they need to "update the page", and the "series 8.3.xx and 8.4.xx of the drivers had issues", and I should reinstall windows and use only the 9.x series dated from June. In addition to the confusion between their own versions and different drivers for the same product on different pages (great quality control guys! This is crazy!!), I found after yet another vista reinstall, that the same issue is there. I only found it because of the Vista popup message in the taskbar since in the device manager there is no exclamation point. Vista offered to download again the ICH9 drivers (again, they are installed, the "installation successful" is there, all other devices show OK with no such error and the correct Intel version etc!!). The popup message from Vista happened at different times after installation, sometimes after many reboots, install of all other drivers and programs, sometimes early on.
Also, the version on the CD and on the DX48BT2 page is 8.3.1010 (10/2007), while the new one on another Intel page is 9.xxx for the INF installation package (dated June 2008), but the actual driver version is 8.6.xxx, dated from 2007 up to 02/2008 for some drivers depending on the device (PCI, etc). It sounds like they had updated the drivers, but waited until June to update the entire package/installation program to be released; indeed the installation package has a different name now according to Intel: " Chipset Device Software" but there is a bug where "the old Intel (R) Chipset Software Installation Utility name can be seen briefly when the setup program is executed".

3. I saw posts from xMrBunglex and others about the northbridge temperature, but people use the onboard sensor which is not the chipset itself. You can't use an IR gun well unless you set the emissivity correctly, and does not always work great, because the heatsink on the northbridge is metallic and reflective. My motherboard says 30 to 45 degrees C for the onboard sensors, but touching the northbridge heatsink it's very hot – by far the only and warmest part of the system. Based on comparison and the time until you have to release your finger because it is too hot, I would estimate the temperature to be between 55 and 65 degrees C. It is almost burning to the touch. Can anyone else try that too? If you have a small 40mm fan, is the base of the heatsink very hot? Note that apparently it's supposed to operate up to 97 degrees C (which is extremely hot!!).

regarding number 3: i have a 40mm fan on my NB heatsink and it's always cool to the touch. i just have a quiet little Scythe Mini-Kaze. it doesn't take much to keep it cool.

Regarding #1, I'd also like to know if and how many people see the same bug at first boot or after removing power. In any case when I get an update from Intel I'll let everyone know. Yesterday they told me their engineers are still working on it.
I have a 40mm Sunon on mine as well, and the heatsink is pretty warm. Then again, I am shoving a lot of volts through it..........
I replaced my Northbridge sink with an Enzotech RNB-B1 heatsink.
tRD option is under test plus some skew options that help with memory overclocking. Watchdog is playing up so what I have stable one moment will be eaten by the watchdog timer the next, so the bios is very Alpha and I can not share.
I did see 550FSB X 7.5 with 1700MHZ ish ram 4GB 7-7-7-24 with 6800MB/s+ in memtest and a short test in vista at 533FSB X8 so there is promise.

My SMBus controller says version 6.4.0.1 dated 1/1/2007. I don't remember having any of the issues you describe with the drivers.
If you're not overclocking and the heatsink is hot, maybe you don't have enough airflow in the case. Also, running with the case open can cause overheating because the airflow isn't directoed over the components any more.
my NB heatsink was never really hot to the touch (445 FSB, 1.35 vFSB, 1.425 vMCH for daily use). it would get warm at the base before i put the fan on it, but never so hot i couldn't keep a finger on it. but i do have an Antec 900 case with a 120mm side fan, so airflow has always been really good in there.
Miwo has an Enzotech heatsink, which explains why it would feel hotter to the touch than my stock one. Enzo makes good stuff and a hot heatsink means it's transferring a lot of heat, which means it's doing its job well.
I think it just means that the heat isn't being carried away fast enough. :)Quote:

Copper heatsinks conduct heat better, but require higher airflow to dissipate the heat over aluminum. Thats why a lot of heatsinks have a copper base and aluminum fins.
Unfortuantely for me, I absolutely CAN'T STAND high rpms on 40mm screamers. Tried a 40x28mm Delta and that thing pierced my skull x_x . Im using a slower speed 40x20 Maglev Sunon and its much more bearable,.....though at the expense of cooling obviously. Infrared Thermometer shows 115F on my Enzotech Northbridge Sink with 1.55v vMCH running through it (bios setting is 1.625v)
ohhh i take that back, my Infrared Thermometer was hitting the front fits close to the bottom of the fan. Measured the lowest point closest to the heatsink base and temperatures are roughly 126F under Prime Blend on the Northbridge.
Toastyyy, but I am rock stable regardless. Will see if I can reduce the vMCH a tad ;)
My NB sink was pretty warm to the touch before I went to H2O. I don't recal what my IR them. said, but I couldn't keep my finger on it for long.
It's under water now though, so should be as cool as it can get. :)

a heatsink that is cool to the touch can be a sign that it isn't transferring heat away from the chip well. it doesn't necessarily mean the chip isn't getting hot. but you guys are right; a really hot heatsink is usually not a good sign.

I have my Crossfire 4870's in place and it does get me another 2500 or so 3Dmarks. Unfortunately, gameplay (Bioshock) is slower and choppier than with the single 280GTX. Although the install with the 8.6 drivers was a lot smoother than my attempt with the 3870's I tried earlier. The problem I always have is the question of whether or not Crossfire is functioning or not in gameplay, and correctly. I'll do some more reading and decide which one to stick with, but I really prefer the single card solution.
I also purchased this board recently (middle of June 08), but have had stable reliable performance, with the exception of S3 Standby. Found that when I had S3 Standby issues, I could enter the BIOS, save changes (without making any) and it would return to proper operation. :shrug:Quote:

If I click on Downloads and select Vista x64, I don't see the same version options you receive. I also note that the release notes specifically state the X38 chipset, where as the links you provided talk about version 4 chipsets. I'm not entirely certain, but the chipset versions listed seem to be for much earlier chipset models. Could there be some confusion over the model of chipset? Or perhaps it's because you are using 32bit Vista and I'm using 64bit?
I'd a 40mm fan from a Jing Ting JTS-0006 northbridge cooler I had for my older AMD nForce 4 MB. I'd moved that fan, but not the older heatsink, to my DX48BT2 (since the old board is toast after 6+ years). I'd performed the fan move, because while the specifications stated it was within the recommended tempuratures that the passive heatsink would burn you when touched. This has turned to very warm with the fan, but no longer the pain inducer it used to be. If others have a Jing Ting and had worked out how to mount the copper heatsink/heatpipe combo, it may be much better than the aluminum block Intel provides.Quote:

What used to work for huge overclocks with my old AMD X2 obviously isn't anywere up to par for Q6600 based OC's. I've a Xigmatek S1823 on the way along with the optional 775 bracket (so to releave stress on the MB that the pin mount applies).
Can you provide us more details on the case, power supply and other aspects to your computer. All of these add up to the comprehensive total and provide better troubleshooting of the stability issues.

i have dual 4870's on my BT and i love them. i actually feel true love for these cards. CrossFire performance is awesome in games that scale with CrossFire. there are a few games that don't play well with it - those are the games i disable CrossFire for before playing.Quote:

Like gtj, I have SMBus driver 2.0, 6.4.0.1 dated 1/1/2007, those I believe were installed with the IDCC, not the original INF ones. No probs here.
The USB issue some of you refer is within specs I believe. USB legacy support is on at boot, then disabled after POST until OS starts, then USB support for the OS is loaded from the drivers. This is how it's supposed to work really. Unless I misunderstood your problem and this is not the way it happens to you.
Regarding INF/chipset versions, well, the new 9.xxx do state 3 series support, so I guess we're on with the BT/X38, as well as the BT/X48, since 4 series is supported as well. As usual, Intel forgot to update the download pages and include this last version. I believe they always have issues with their INFs, never clear which are the latest and work with which chipset. Always been that way I guess.
Haven't flashed 1554 yet, was waiting for the new BIOS version but it has been 2 months since last release, guess guys at Intel are hard at work. S3 is a setback then, glad you mentioned it.
If anyone has any suggestions on overclocking my system I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm pretty new to the overclocking and this board seems especially touchy.
Randy I see that you are also running a quad, maybe you'd have some advice for me or anyone really I just noticed you have a quad and its running about 45c under load, am i reading that right?
this isn't the most nub-friendly overclocker in the world. i'd recommend reading through this thread at your convenience to learn as much as you can. also make sure you have the latest BIOS. and i personally wouldn't install IDCC until at least you're sure everything is stable. IDCC was the source of many headaches for me. and 45° load for a quad core is a lofty goal. don't worry if yours runs hotter. shoot, my dual core runs hotter than that.

Watchdog is killing me at this time, i had hoped for some screenies as 533fsb was really easy, now i think its stable and watchdog kicks in on every other reboot and I have have to clock down only to clock all the way back up slowly.
It is getting better though, skew options worked well with 8GB and allowed for moderately higher ram clocks using the ubber 1333kits here.

I have a 5.1 analog speaker set, and am only getting mono sound in games, mainly out of the center channel. I can do the speaker test in the IDT Audio Control Panel, and get sound out of all 6 speakers individually (open configuration), but in games all I hear is the center channel, and faint sound out of the others if I press my ear against it. There's no separation, it's the same mono track that the center channel's piping out.

Driver version 5.10.5790.3, date 5/7/2008
In the XP Sound control panel, Advanced Speaker settings, the drop-down is set to 7.1 home theater. I can change it to 5.1 surround, but it doesn't stick. Next time I go back in, it's reset to 7.1. The same thing happens in games like HL Ep 2, which I assume uses the windows default settings.
I've uninstalled the driver, updated to the version above, turned on and off Dolby Live support, Virtual Speaker & Pro Logic II, no change. I updated the Bios to 1554. No luck with the various Hardware Acceleration settings. Changing the Default playback device from IDT Audio1 to IDT Audio2 turned off the sound in games, but not in Windows itself. I am getting stereo sound from iTunes, so it appears to be a surround only issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

* Regarding the heatsink temp, it's indeed hot to the touch, not quite burning, but definitely hot. I can keep my fingers on it...It seems to be consistent with what you guys reported, so I don't think my board is faulty; regarding ventilation, I should have mentioned my setup...I have a NZXT Lexa case, I replaced the front and back 120mm fan to more powerful ones (Antec and Noctua NFP12), there is a top 80mm, and a side 120 mm that actually blows almost on the northbridge, but it's not very powerful. And it gets hotter with the case open as mentioned by others, so I've always kept it closed, this is how to cool the case with good airflow, I agree.
It seems though that a 40mm fan would be necessary. Especially if overclocking. I've also read that Intel chipsets are designed to work at higher temps that the Nvidia ones.
* Regarding the weird boot issue, I got an email update from Intel, saying they haven't forgotten me, and are working on the case...
* Regarding the SMBus and INF drivers: during the installation, it clearly says X38/X48. I'm using Vista 32 SP1. And the version is indeed newer, I compared with the previous installation and the newer one. They really should update their web page and make clear which version to use. The tech at Intel said to definitely use the 6/2008 release (actual driver date range from 09/2007 to 02/2008 depending on the component in System Devices in the device manager).

Click on System Devices in device Manager, Intel ICH9 Family SMBus Controller - 2930, properties---> then in the General Tab, under Device Status, what does it say? And if you go in the next Driver tab, and click on Driver Details, what happens?
Because, if I just click on properties and go to the Driver tab, like the others here have reported, it shows the correct driver date and the "Intel" name. The bug is *only* when clicking on Driver Details and under Device Status of the first General tab...weird.

Are you noticing any other side effects? Does Everest show all of the temps, voltages and fans? If so, the SMBus controller is working fine and I wouldn't worry about it. The SMBus controller is actually embedded in the ICH9 so it's very unlikely to be bad.Quote:

Mine also shows "No drivers are installed for this device. " on the general tab, but shows a driver on the drivers tab.
Mine shows the same thing, but Everest, Speedfan, and any other monitoring utility that supports the dx38bt are working fine. I wouldn't worry about it :)

Just FYI, I'm not paranoid, but I 'm bringing this issue because Vista showed a popup window saying there was no driver installed for the device, and an option to try to resolve it (just downloaded the drivers again). Some people may have missed it, because the popup windows fades pretty quickly.
I wonder of many of you have the same bug. And it would be good to know if it's just a display bug or if it affect (or will affect) any functionality or reliability...I also disabled the onbaord sound and maybe there is a relationship, not sure. Or it's because of SP1, new, Intel hasn't seen the bug yet.

By the way, have you tried IDCC back again? (I think you had some issues with it?) Were you able to get back to normal by uninstalling IDCC without re-installing Vista?
I found that you'll see errors in the Event Log if you empty the Temp folder of your user account, because IDCC stores permanently files there, which is definitely not something it should be doing. Other than that, after installation there are some IOCBIOS and XT errors in the log sometimes. But definitely you have to not delete files in your user/app data/local/temp folder...

IDCC is so completely broke on my machine. Changing FSB does nothing and its hung up my system on more than one occasion. I've all but given up on it. Didn't have much success with IDCC on my XBX2 either, oh well
Hope the new bios comes soon, im itching to tweak tRD settings!

OK, I talked to Intel again (45 min of tests), and after trying to reinstall the drivers another time (!), they said it could be a conflict somewhere (really?) or they could RMA my motherboard but don't think it will solve my problems. They said that if I get the message "no drivers installed", there is a real problem, and it needs to be fixed. So I insisted on them trying the same driver version as me, and also the latest ones, with Vista SP1, to see if they have the same bug-- they say they will find a computer to do the test. mryerse, Miwo: so for ICH9 Family SMBus Controller - 2930, under the General tab, Device Status, you get "No drivers are installed for this device.", but on the Drivers tab, it shows Intel's name and the driver version -- which one and which date? What happens when you click on "driver details"?
Randy, down8, oldsarge: thanks a lot for your update!!! You have version 6.xxxxx, which is definitely different from me. With the DX48BT2, it's 8.xxxx in the CD or on the website...no choice for the older 6.xxxxx...
The other thing that could happen, is I installed from a Vista SP1 DVD. Intel may not have tested that. Also, I flashed the BIOS to the May version.
I wonder if the bug is:
- all 8.xxxx versions
- because of 8.xxxxx and SP1 (install with SP1, not upgrade to SP1)
- the new BIOS
- something else
More info from mryerse, Miwo would help me investigate ;o) .... and others if you get a chance ;o) So far I don't like the guy at Intel telling me there's a problem if I see that, there is a conflict or it's really a bug....sounds like I'm doing research and testing for them here.

I have 8.3.0.1008 1/13/2007. I think these are what Windows used during the OS install. I have Vista Ultimate 64. Downloaded 8.3.1.1010 10/2/2007 (Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility for Intel® Desktop Boards) from their website, it says I already have 8.4.0.10.1016. I can overwrite if I want to. Clicked no for now.
This reminds me that I had tried installing the "RAID: Intel® Matrix Storage Manager Driver", but running the .exe from within Windows doesn't seem to do anything. Can you only run that during the OS install? Am I missing some RAID functionality because of that? When I go to Storage Controllers in the device manager, I see Marvell and Microsoft, but not an Intel controller. I think there should be an Intel controller in there, no?
Edit: The Vista DVD I used has SP1 also.
Miwo and mryerse -- thanks a lot!! It sounds like the bug is with the 8.xxx drivers (CD or latest version) and SP1. The guy at Intel asked me if I could try without SP1...well no I have the SP1 DVD, I didn't patch or slipstream, so no choice there.
BTW, what happens when you click on "Driver Details"?
I don't know if I'll get answers from others but it sounds like there is a bug with Vista SP1 and the drivers to me. I was hoping Intel would say something along the lines of "yes we know, we'll fix it and don't worry it doesn't affect anything", but it's not what they said at all. Hopefully they'll escalate as promised and I'll know more soon ;o)
Driver details behaves as you'd expect. Properties and their values are available to look at. Driver version and date match that shown on the driver tab.
So if you click on the Driver tab of the SMBus controller properties, it shows the driver date, the Intel name, and below if you click on the Driver Details button, it shows you the details OK? But on the first General tab, Device Status, it says "No drivers are installed for this device"?Quote:

After wasting some time with the Asus P5Q3 Deluxe board... it is either Asus or the p45 chipset/ddr3 combination isn't ready yet, at least for now.
I have decided to try the more mature x48 chipset.
I have not done any overclocking on the board yet, I have only installed a clean windows at default settings. Board is behaving as it should for now.
I hope this helps some of you. 2 observations so far...
1)After a fresh install of XP x64 (before any windows updates/service pack etc), I installed the latest chipset driver from Intel's website for the board. All of the usb devices stopped functioning...keyboard, mouse, flash driver...none of the usb ports worked.
*I suggest people download the latest chipset driver from the chipset section as that one works.....not the one on the board's download page.
2)I updated the bios to 1554 using the ISO image and I had to use the Plextor DVD Writer, as the driver on the CD image was erroring out on my ASUS DVD Rom. All bios settings were correct and same and I used the same burned CD.
*So it probably needs to be a writer drive to work with the BIOS ISO image CD or it may just not be compatible with some drives.

Yes, in fact, it may be specifically Vista SP1, if I'm not the only one with the same bug (I'll compare Miwo and DiscoTech screenshots). Intel told me they tested the driver on Vista with no issues and certified it.Quote:

This is a very good screenshot and summary of the problem...
The conflicts:
- No exclamationp point in device manager, but the Device status says "no drivers are installed"
- A driver version and date, but Driver Details says that no drivers have been loaded
Intel wasn't aware of it. I only found it because a huge popup window showed above the taskbar sometome after installation, mentioning the issue (no drivers for ICH9 SMBus) and offering to find a solution (downloading drivers again, which did not work).
Thanks again Miwo for your time. If others have the same problem, give me your configuration & I'll gather to give to Intel so they can tell us what's going on and if we can safely ignore...
I got the exclamation a while back, but didnt think anything of it and just ignored it. I never saw the problem again after the first install of the driver I believe.....

The only reason I found the issue, is that Vista SP1 showed a popup window saying no drivers were installed or could be found for the ICH9 SMBus Controller... Then a second window appears and says: click here to find a solution to your problem! Which does some scanning and offers to download the drivers again. Which does not solve the issue...
However, as I said, I did not notice the message the first time, only on the second and third Vista reinstallation. The popup window does not stay long on the screen, and it appears at a random time long after installation based on my two tests (in either case long after drivers installation and a few reboots). If you're not in front of the PC when that happens you can miss it...
Not a very good job from Intel: 1) not knowing the issue, 2) suggesting I have a real problem or conflict in my configuration and they assured me I should never see such an error message and their drivers are just fine 3) spending more than a week doing tests for them like reinstalling Vista a couple of times, testing driver installation uninstallation and reinstallation many many times, removing the board out of the case etc and other countless of suggestions that I had to follow for them to continue to help me but obviously solved nothing because their driver has a bug :mad:
Note: I contacted them by email, then after some tests and emails they told me to call them for better troubleshooting, then they said they needed to research further and they called me back 24 hours later, and this is where we are...it's not like I just happened to talk to one Intel tech that was not as knowledgeable :rolleyes:
Next time I'll just assume they have buggy drivers but my installation and board are fine ;)
I sent an email to Intel to explain the findings and ask them if they had indeed "escalated the issue". I'll put that issue to bed and if I do get an update from Intel regarding that driver bug or the POST issue on first boot that they said their Engineering department was investigating, I'll post a quick update as to what the findings are...
Meanwhile, back to a more productive use of my time!! ;)

Been away for a while, reading just now.
My board is the DX38BT, running on Vista 32 SP1 and with the SMBus v2.0 drivers. I see most of the screenshots are only using the "regular" SMBus drivers that comes with the INF package. The v2.0 driver for SMBus I believe was installed with IDCC, not sure though. I have it installed and works fine, no error like the one you're reporting.
General->Device Status states This device is working properly.
Driver says Intel 1/1/2007 version 6.4.0.1 and Driver Details confirm this info.

Try installing the SMBus driver 2.0 and see if it works.
Seeing audio issues coming up, how do you guys find the audio drivers? It's not that they're not working for me, they are, but I don't get the Dolby tab in the IDT drivers, although everything seems to be in order. Does it only show if you have a DD receiver connected?
Also, the looks of the audio control panel is awful, those guys at IDT need a few lessons on GUI design I guess. I have seen info, long time already, on a v2.0 GUI, as opposed to the current v1.8, with newer drivers but so far haven't seen anything new. Also, the latest driver update had nothing new from the previous version.

I did install IDCC previously on my previous Vista installation last week. I did not check SMBus after that, unfortunately...didn't know it came with drivers. I would rather avoid installing it, as others have stated here, there are some bugs with its behaviour after a while (beta version still), you shouldn't empty your user/local/temp folder, and there are some bugs in the Event log sometimes...plus it adds one more thing on startup ;)
How did you find your drivers were revision "2.0", or that there was a revision "2.0" available? Did Intel say what issues were addressed with this new revision? I wished the Intel tech would have mentioned something about that or it could be on there website! (maybe I missed it?)
* Speaking of event log, I get a TCP/IP error "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts." It shows after startup. Even just after Vista installation and motherboard drivers. I don't have any virus (fresh HDD, scanned anyway), and no automatic program connecting to Internet really. Strange.

I know some people have issues with IDCC, but it works ok for me. It's still beta alright, and it seems will be forever, but so far looks good. The guys at Intel must clean the house alright, every new version is better but there's always something... even the install paths keep changing. Maybe with the new BIOS revision coming up IDCC gets it's final status.
Regarding the INF (or chipset instalation utility as it's now called if I recall correctly) files, that's another Intel mistery. So many different versions and no one seems to know which is the latest or the right version for your mobo. I have also been around searching for the latest for 3 series (in my case) and this is different from the one on the CD as well as on their web page. Anyway, just decided to leave it as it is. The one issue have is that my SATA drives show up in IDE channels, not sure if this should be like that.
Regarding SMBus 2.0 driver, this what the description appears like in the System Devices in Device Manager after installing it "Intel (R) 82801 GB SMBus controller - 2930 (Intel (R) SMBus 2.0 driver). Reading the release notes I get even more confused, since the dates report back to January 9, 2007 and May 21, 2007. It states ICH9 support, ClearBus hang bug fix, WHQL certification, soft reset for ICH8 and ICH9. Go figure!!!
TCP/IP error? Could it be Vista connecting home, M$ is watching you!! Just kidding, not sure what could be, should check mine maybe.
Just a quick note here for people with S3 issues running Vista. S3 only works for me if the plan I choose is default. If I modify that plan - say to change standby from 1 hour to two, it won't work. Just set up a Windows Home Server in the past few weeks, and if that box is on, same thing, no S3 - so it may be a Vista issue. Just an FYI.
Running the the Beta's and I am very pleased with the performance now over the 280GTX. I had to wait like a vulture on Newegg to get these, but of course, they are now readily available:)Quote:

I agree with you, the driver version mess from Intel should be cleaned up...even their tech people recommend different versions from different pages when you call :confused:
I researched more my TCP/IP error but it shouldn't apply in my case. I wonder how many people here have the same event. It appears in Event log sometimes after startup.
Liek you I also have my drive tagged as "ATA Device" in Disk Drives of the device manager, and in IDE ATA controllers, the first ATA Channel 0 shows that UDMA mode 6 is used under the Device box (doesn't show which drives) -- the other chanel 0 devices show nothing there.
I guess it's just how it's labelled. Nothing shows anything with the words "SATA" in my device manager actually.
You have to go in the device manager, under the Intel Ethernet driver, and uncheck all of the wake on Magic Packet settings or else the WHS will constantly cause the machine to come out of S3. With everything unchecked, and PP1 installed on the WHS, it wakes it up just fine to do the backup.Quote:

The last on my list was the TCP/IP error in the event log... I wasn't too concerned about it, but on the other hand it does not seem it should be there before any program is installed after Vista installation. I've tried netstat before, and tcpview yesterday based on the suggestion from mryerse...there are a few processes, not all easy to identify, and the TCPIP error occurs after startup but it can be 2 min or 2 hours...so I have to be patient, monitor all and hopefully I'll see something to be able to understand.
I also found a lot of Time_Wait, from SystemProcess [0]. Then when I close, the firefox processes close, but those other stay there as Time_Wait (for example Google.com, some IP addresses, etc), but they are under SystemProcess [0] in tcpview. Maybe I'll use netstat and the PID to see better which process is being used.
So I wonder if others see that too...I mean, this error message but without any program installed like torrents...it's easy, you can go back to the first few events after Windows installation, you'll see if it's there already, that's how I found it was there early on ;o)
Well, I don't see the error message but the TIME_WAIT entries are normal. Windows defaults to a 240 second delay after a connection is closed before it flushes its resources. Google "TcpTimedWaitDelay". There's a registry key you can set to reduce the delay. I normally set mine to 30 seconds.

fine and fine. your E8400 will hit its wall before the motherboard hits its FSB wall. i've known people that ran their memory as high as DDR 2000 on this board. there is no real reason to go higher than that unless you're just looking for bragging rights.Quote:

500x9 might be pushing it a little, at least with the current BIOS and I don't think you'll get that on the X38. With the X48 and an upcoming BIOS, should be do-able. Tony from OCZ has been working with Intel on the BIOS and has reported some encouraging test results.Quote:

I installed my DX48BT2 and Windows Vista 64bit service pack 1 yesterday, immediately I saw in the device manager that the SMBus controller had a yellow exclamation mark.
So I went to the Intel website and downloaded the chipset driver version 8.3.1.1010 and after restarting Windows the device disappeared.
If I right click the SMBus controller and check the properties, it says "No driver installed", however, if that was the actual case, Windows should still be reporting the SMBus controller with a conflict (!) and it is not.
I haven't see any pop-up configuration wizard asking for drivers since...
I'm a little concern about it, but other than that, my system is running like a champ, I had to work with Kingston to clock my memory at 1600mhz since later on I discovered that most of nowadays memory by factory defaults kicks at basic frecuencies to ensure POST.
Hope my experience helps you clarify something with the issue reported by nick DX48BT2...

5. This issue is not observed by people who have the older 6.x series driver from 01/2007, that apparently is installed with IDCC, but yet has the name "SMBus 2.0" (vs. "SMBus").
6. The popup message shown by Vista is random. It may or may not show on your system. It does not stay on long, you can miss it. It appears only once. It is normal to see it given the bug that the SMBus device says "no driver installed"!
7. This is without doubt an Intel bug. Either there is a driver installed, or there isn't. So the fact that no exclamation point are shown in the device manager, and driver date/name/version are provided, conflict with the fact that the status says no driver installed, and that clicking driver details show a message saying that no drivers were loaded.
8. Now, the real news: I've been on the phone, email, etc with Intel for more than a week. I've done all the tests they asked me to do, half of them were not relevant or smart suggestions, but I did it anyway. I asked them to escalate, because they were concluding by: sorry it's just you, or you could try to RMA your board.

The situation was handled better by Intel after I posted the information below, and I do think they read it (see my post 7/18/2008 6:57PM for the reason/details)
I've finally gotten a call back. Read on, you will be amazed:
a. A voice mail tells me that the error I found could not be duplicated on Vista SP1 on their systems, and asks me to call back. I have saved the voicemail and can post it if needed.
b. I talk to yet another Intel tech support guy, explain the situation. He says basically it's just me with the bug, no one else. In order to explain the situation better since he's not really top-notch up to date with the situation, I ask him to come to this forum to see the posts, and screenshots of the bug. OK, now he puts me on hold to go talk to other people, for 5-10 minutes.
c. Finally gets back to me. Funny, now the story has changed: they were in fact able to replicate my bug!? He tries to explain a few things that are completely incoherent, then goes on to say that if I want to get rid of the message, I should try to install a RAID system, it could work, because of different drivers. I explain that I do not want to buy another hard drive and RAID it to see if it solves their bug, but am asking simply if this bug is an issue or not. He does not answer the question, and immediately says: it's not an Intel bug, it's Microsoft, it's not our problem, you need to talk to Microsoft.
d. I explain calmly again that this is visible BOTH on Vista and XP, specifically with their drivers, the one that come with the board or on their website, and no other board on the market has this bug, so really, it's up to them to investigate. I tell him again that I simply want to know if I can safely ignore the bug, and if there will be an update, investigation, or maybe a note on the FAQ section of the Intel website.
e. Now he suddenly changes story again, and tells me that I'm really the only one with the bug, "no one else has reported it".
f. At this point, I am wondering how many times he is going to change stories, and if he is under the influence of drugs. So I again explain him that he just said they were able to replicate the bug, that it is posted here by others, and that the DX48BT2 has not been on the market for long (although same bug with DX38BT2). I know he is lying because I know personally someone else who has also wrote to Intel to mention the bug, with an assigned case number. I have his case number too.
g. No hope at this point, I ask if I can talk to someone else or if the case can be reviewed and escalated.
I tell him one more time that I have seen an error message in Vista, have seen the Device Manager bug, and other have seen the same thing, so I simply want to know if they have confirmed the bug and if I can simply ignore it or if they are going to work on it, that's it, I'm not asking for the moon! For God's sake, it's Intel most advanced "Extreme Series", most expensive, most recent board for a company that people buy because of engineering/technical support and reliability vs. some cheaper overseas boards! From the world leader in semiconductors, they make the board, the northbridge and southbridge, and the processor too!!! And their profits are up 25%, announced two days ago(http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/15/tech...ion=2008071518), it's not like they're going under.
I'm sad that the phone conversation was not recorded. I've called Intel before and it was handled in a much more professional way, no complaints. For this case, the previous guy that escalated the issue wasn't great either, and this last one was definitely unprofessional and/or really incomptetent. I will not give his name because it's likely not his real name -- please note that I don't think that the fact that English was not his mother tongue did not create any communication issues, there was no miscommunication. He was just trying to blame anything on anybody, "Intel has no responsibility".
So in the end he said that he would put a note to escalate the issue after I insisted, but "probably nothing would happen", and that "no, he can't say the bug is not an issue, it's not true, I shouldn't have the bug, he says there IS an issue" but tells me I'm on my own. Wonderful. Poll: Should I buy again Intel in the future? (no need to reply ;) )
Note that I also sent an email/letter to Intel, but save your some time: they handle by email only simple requests. When it doesn't work or if there is a real bug, they will eventually ask you to call them.
PLEASE, IF YOU ARE READING:
- Call Intel at (916) 377-7000
- They will ask you first an email address where they can reach you, your motherboard, and give you a case number
- You will be transferred shortly to the Tech Support line; when you get the guy/girl on the phone, reference immediately this thread, specifically page 51 with the screenshot: this will save you a lot of time in explanations
Hopefully if a few people call they will at least do something.
Hopefully someone at Intel who handles customer satisfaction or engineering development or marketing of their top-of-the line boards will read this forum...nooo, who am I kidding ;) You can find it with Google though...]
