Well there you go. Easy enough right? ;)
Yeah... just gotta find a splitter.
Keep us posted-would like to know how this works. 2 boards on 1 power supply would be not bad at all:up:
Not bad really, pretty much in line with buying cables from anywhere else. Figure there are 48 wires, each 12" long, so 48 feet of wire, plus plugs, plus pins, and all the work putting it together... really isn't all that bad when you sit down and think about it :D
I also got a 6pin PCIe to 8 pin EPS adapter from those guys too, since I'll need another one and won't be putting a graphics card in this one sammy anymore - all after I kill and bring that board back to life from modding the x8 PCIe slot :ROTF:
so if we managed to get 2 dual sammy boards into one case we could use a single psu for 8 low consuming cores? ( despite MM´s piece of advice )
That's what I aim to find out
Does anyone have another 1GB stick of ECC DDR2 for this system? Just as I want to upgrade from 1GB my retailer stops selling the sticks I need
here you go :
http://www.alternate.nl/html/product...&l3=Registered
That is my local retailer and they're out of stock ;)
I'll check my stock when I get home I have some 1gb sticks
Normally I agree with your reservations about running multiple computers off a single PSU, but in the case of a Sammy, it's probably cheaper and more efficient to run multiple sammies off a single PSU. Most PSUs aren't hitting max efficiency until around 50% load or higher, and at 100 watts a piece, a nice 400-450 watt PSU (eg Corsair VX450 or CX400) could easily handle 2-3 Sammies without breaking a sweat.
The down side is that, as far as I know, turning one off would turn them all off, and turning one on would turn them all on.
Eller
I believe a slot in my board is bad/not recognizing memory- I have 2 2gb sticks in there and it is only listing 2 gb total. This is the second set of memory so I don't think it's the sticks- I have them in the first two slots which others can I try them in?
Thank you very much
Ya where ya been gongo working hard? It's gettin hot here finally on the East Coast- Sammies are the thing to have in this weather because they stay CooL:cool:
If you ground the green wire from the power supply, it will keep the supply on, regardless of inputs from the MB. Also, I think in the cyberdruid thread mentioned earlier, he states that turning one MB on does not turn the other on, and likewise, shutting one down, does not shut the other off. Grounding the green is a surefire way to keep the supply on if in doubt
I have a entire 2.0ghz sammys rig for cheap (motherboard, cpus, heatsinks, backplate and ram). pm me if anyone interested.
I can build a Phenom II X4 940 system for $191 shipped with Biostar 790GX board and RAM. I'm assuming it smokes a Sammy for the cost?
Ok, show me links then and here is my cost to build a sammy rig for those parts:
MB :$30 delivered
HS: $20.00 for the pair
cpu's: $80.00/pair
memory: $40 from newegg for 2 times one gig or cheaper on ebay.. DDR2-400 ECC REG is cheap to buy today.
Total:$170.00:p:
Lets add in that the MB your using ain't exactly what I'd call primo vs an Intel server board that should last quite a long time.
Then electrical cost, what does your combo draw?
The Sammy is 117w at 100% load..
That's the point here, sammy is the ideal machine for people who aren't crunchers by nature.
Those that don't want elec guzzling hot machines..
It is not for all and I did it as an experiment to see for myself what were the good and bad points..
I assumed you bought it on newegg.com with 20 dollars rebate right?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.209473
Interesting, well if its the same price then seems like a no-brainer to me.
I guess I admire any machine that can pump out massive amounts of points for research. Sossaman's can within reason-it is the Low heat&electrical output that is attractive thing about em. Hey they are not for all-But if a few of us could get together and sneak 1 into every home in the country:eek: No one would ever notice!! Like a 100watt light bulb on all time:cool: Big Deal
Not everyone can afford to pay 300 dollars electrical bill every month. Thus, i chose the sammys. Produce about 7-8k per day and help for a cause.
I like my sammys. And they like being together. I'll have to grab pics but they are running in one box with the Y cables just fine
ok ok, plz show me where to build one :D
I can't stand this P4 makes more heat then the i7 Xeon and ungodly slow
For the CPUs, you can buy a pair of 2.0ghz sammys from me for 85 shipped con usa. Or you can buy it from ebay for 115.
Motherboard: http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=4675
Awesome, thanks. So I need ECC DDR2 and some heatsinks.
Still trying to decide between this and PhenomII 940 Oc'ed
depends on your situation.
Do you live at home?
How much is electric?
Will heat be a factor?
Are you a gamer?
Sammy isn't the right choice all the time.
Just a niche machine that is very good at somethings but not so good at others.
It's not 64 bit capable
It only has a pci-eX8 slot and one pcix slot..
it is a EATX board so needs a EATX case(12x13" motherboard)
Needs a 24 pin and 8 pin plug off the PSU.
Depending on your needs a AMD940 may be a better choice.
Well I kinda wanted a Phenom II to play with because can get it soooo cheap right now.
Cost really isn't an issue though, in fact I may build a Gainestown soon I miss having server hardware :)
Will do tomorrow. I'm not at home right now to get pics.
don't show this to Dave
really nice but shippin would not be nice:rolleyes:
Really, we should get that as a team... $85 a pop is nothing
Could pick them up- says they are 400 miles away/6 1/2 hour drive hmmmm worth the gas??
With that price, hell yea.
Gas is way cheaper in states that it's in Finland...
http://cgi.ebay.com/Silicon-Mechanic...130316366139QQ Here's those sammys sold separetely.
Guys.. that's a great opportunity. However I don't see intercontinental shipping on those, so here is what we could do:
1. Try and find someone who would be willing to run those all together. They are around 100W each so that's 1KW/h for the whole. I'm thinking of bob because he has the lowest elec costs (0,05$ right?) :D
2. Find enough people to buy those. Like everyone interested could buy one if the ending price is reasonable (maybe we set a max of 1000$?).
3. One person runs those as a farm/cluster, either under the names of those that bought them OR as "Team XS Sammy Cluster" <-- :D
Those should do approx 60-70k WCG/d put together.
Sound like a plan? :D
I would definitely put 100 bucks up for that project.
That is an insane price for 10 systems.
But those elec costs are a tad high for one person to bear, especially in this economic climate, but the 'receiver' can always individually ship them, maybe at a small premium :p:
Perkam
That lot is very very tempting, instant mini farm on a rack!
I'd rather see the auction expire, then negotiate a price w shipping and have him relist it as a Buy it Now.
Still 85 a whack for a full system, drives & case is a steal.
OK here are pics of my dual sammys on one PSU in one box :D PSU is a 400W antec and it barely even blows warmish air out

@sparky
You use the box that came with your motherboard. Hahaha
Amazing, what a work of art. :D
SparkyJJO- You are my new hero! That's so cool.
(I feel like I should be pushing up some glasses and adjusting suspenders...)
I'd be up for a system or two if we can get them :)
Probably to let it end then try to negotiate with him.
Yep-we should negotiate and see where that takes us. See if shipping it is cheaper than driving out to it
Wow that is so cool....The Helmer. Ok but Helmer II is insane:shocked:
I have the lowest costs and the lowest quality cruel aunt :D.. on topic: that thing is a steal.. even the PSU or the chassis alone would be a deal..if somehow that thingie could arrive here I can run it without any hassle with the name you want.. IIRC my costs are something like 0.0015 /kwh..I´ve written it here long time ago but can´t recall atm..
I'd rather see a bunch of 4 socket 8 core/chip rigs in it. hehe
Maybe overclocked and liquid cooled. =p dreams... dreams... i bet this one would be a nightmare would WUs lol
Correct me if I'm wrong but that should come out to 50-70k ppd. For a $850 system that's untouchable!
Edit: Oh and this would be sick- do it with OC i7 and GTX 260's...
To bad to do it for just 3 towers would cost $91,000 ($500 per i7-920 + Board and $170 per 260) if I did my math right. Plus then all the engineering that goes into actually building it and Power supply?
Anyone up for it? :p:
15 mins to go and the price is the same on ebay.....Man you get good deals over there
Well he put em for sale separately or in lots of two/three!
Sold separetely:

Go bid yer own sammy :p:
Oh if only I wasn't broke. :(
good deals?? that monster could be had for a min of 3k each of the 10 at least in here
...for 4 Peta Flops. Hmmm, so 1000 Gflops = TeraFlop. 1000 TeraFlops = 1 Peta Flops.Quote:

My sossaman should be on it's way so I am wondering if anyone is using their's as a file server? I have one of my quads setup with WHS and a HDD died the other day and I lost all my data.
So can I put some sort of RAID card in it to avoid losing my data or should I just use a cruncher?
:banana::banana::banana: too many people getting sossamans .. I guess I will try to have mine ASAP ( after I recover from some stuff :P)
