well the asus heatsink is about the same as the blackops one, just that it has the heatsink sorounded by the copper walls of the block, and it uses only one heatpipe while the asus one uses 2. the latter doesnt make a different tho if you ask me :D

getting the air to flow through the nb heatsink isnt that easy i think... so maybe the way you put the fan over it, it isnt really pushing the air through the heatsink?
i cant really tell from the pic you posted, but it could be your just pushing air on top of the heatsink... which doesnt really help as it has nowhere to escape to since the sides are blocked by the waterblock walls. can you try to mount the fan in a 45 degree angle so it blows the air half over, half inside the heatsink from one side?
that should work better and lower your temps :)

Here are two more pictures, and such as the air pressure is created more on sides of the fan, and I have plenty of dissipating surface on the sides of NB block, it should be fine, though your idea makes sense and I will definitely try it. It will not look as good as it looks now though, anyway "Temperatur über alles" :D

Well, after fighting with this new MB trying to get it to do Something!!!, I was about to give up and put my ASUS Maximus back in, which I did NOT want to do. Then I found this thread and saw that everyone else is having the same issues that I am. Sorry guys, but it did make me feel a little better knowing that all of a sudden I didn't know how to do a simple OC. Been doing this for too many years and I have never been this frustrated with a MB before, came close with the Maximus, but this Blackops has put that frustration to shame....sad. To say the least, I am very disappointed, especially after all the hype and reviews about how sweet and easy it was with this board.....sigh. This post is not a bashing of hate, please understand that. It more like a bashing of frustration, frustration from all the positive reviews and advertisement about the Overclockers Dream MB. As of this moment, it has not justified itself as one of the most expensive MB out there, not to me anyway. But I will give them a chance to fix it, and of course, that takes time.

Anyway, after reading this whole thing and trying all the different things you guys did, I finally got it stable, tho its not much of an OC. Right now I dont care, it is ACTUALLY OC'd and Prime95 & OCCT stable. There are many issues that are so wrong with this board, the Bios mostly, and that still has me shaking my head at Foxconn. I am happy I have an OC, tho I am not happy with the OC I have by any means. With the setup I have this MB should have been itching to start cooking, such is not the case unfortunately. Hopefully they will keep working on the bios, one can only hope because this board has such promise. For those who are curious you can see my setup (Quadzilla) on OCForums in the watercooling section under the thread Quad Crazy.

I do not understand the memory issue. I cannot take it off of SPD or even begin to raise it to the manufacture specified voltage, and that is really jerking my chain. There is no reason that I should have to set my memory to 1066 when I have OCZ Platinum DDR3 1600. If I try to raise it in any way at all it will BSOD. I can get it to boot at 1333, but I cannot go over 9x and 333 FSB. If I take this 400 FSB now and try to raise it, same thing, BSOD. The 333 FSB is not stable anything in windows but the 400 FSB is rock solid, but only because its turned down to 1066 with the 1:2.665 setting. And trust me, I have tried every voltage setting combo you can try short of knowing I would hurt the MB if I went any higher, way into the red. Very disappointed with the memory handling right now. And also I am wondering why they would place the memory slots where they did, it makes no sense what so ever to me. Right now I have 2 of the 3870X2's that have EK waterblocks and the memory clamps are pushing my master video card which is causing it to warp. I just dont understand why they could not have seen this during development. Everyone knows how big and long video cards are now. Foxconn, try paying attention to placement, this is unacceptable. I'm sure its not hurting anything but geez guys.

My second issue is this stupid throttling of the CPU. I cant stand that garbage. When I set a bios to a certain setting, then thats where I want it ALWAYS! I cannot for the life of me turn the stupid thing off. From reading here, it has to be that EIST function, because I have EVERYTHING else turned off! But if I disable it, no matter what I have the bios set too, it reverts to 9x and 333 FSB in windows and stays there. This is just insane. Again, a bios issue thats need fixing. Perhaps I am not doing it right, I am not discounting that, but I dont believe so.

I cant find any program that will show me the correct voltage settings that I have in bios. Not CPUz, OCCT, Everest or Core Temp. They are prolly not coded for X48, or if they are than not for Blackops would be my guess. Would be nice to be able to see proper numbers when in windows.

Havent done my sig yet. I will do that after I post this so you can see what I am using.

Apply at least 1.85V on your memory, better 1.9 V - and everything will be completely different. I personally don't like OCZ as a brand, but it is not your major problem.
I have never seen CPU throttling on my boards ... something should be wrong - CPU temps, thermal contact, dirt inside your WB, etc. ...

Under control panel of vista, power options, change from power saving to maximum performance, your multiplier should be set.

4 x 2GB is gonna be really tough to run at 1600, you will high NB voltage, plus loosen performance level a lot.

I'm having the same problem with OCZ... maybe foxconn need to test OCZ memory with this board? Also, am I running my SATA hard drives at IDE speeds? In the bios there is an option for IDE, RAID and something else (which I forget right now). Its set to IDE.. does this mean I am running at IDE speeds, or is this just a term now used for not running under RAID when connecting SATA drives?

Thankyou LardArse so much. I had no clue and would never have checked that. It doesnt throttle now that its set to performance. I had no idea Windows could even do that. I've already appologized to my MB, many times...I hope it believes me.

As far as the NB voltage goes, when do you think I will be getting in the danger zone. I have read that a NB starts to get flakey and could possibly be damaged when the temp goes over 45c, tho I am not sure if that is true or not. I have the NB on its own loop and it gets cooled as good as you can with water. I am worried about getting too high with the voltage. Any suggestions on where I should stop if I have to keep turning it up? I am guessing 1.6 maybe 1.7. I would think any higher may damage the board, but in all honesty I dont really know.

I am not a OC'ing guru by any means. I understand the basics and usually stay in the mild to average zone when OC'ing. There is alot I still dont understand. Memory has always been my biggest downfall when it comes to all the different settings. I envy you guys who can just go into memory and start changing things properly. It confuses me to no end. I know that the biggest problem I have now is the memory settings and I feel that is what is stopping me from raising this FSB and memory ratio. I know just raising the NB voltage isnt the only thing I need to do.

I have attached the current CPUz readout for you to see. What is confusing me is the sticker on the memory says 7-7-7@1.9V, yet CPUz says 1.5V. Right now I have no choice but to believe CPUz because it will not post if I raise the DRAM voltage to any setting above 1.686V. It just beeps for about 10 or 15 sec and then recovers the bios so it will post again. Can you please push me in the right direction?

You're fine. You're running in IDE mode, which means that you have individual HD's just like if you had IDE drives in. Your not as fast as RAID would be at all but is as fast as they can go without being a RAID array setup. As long as you keep them defragged well they will be plenty fast enough for normal use. If you want super fast HD's, then you need to look into RAID. I cannot speak for RAID because I do IDE myself. I dont see any reason for them to be super fast for normal everyday use, but thats just my opinion.

I used to run RAID on my 2x 74GB Raptors, but I found it a long winded way of getting better performance. The setup just isnt worth the agro.

How was windows throttling your CPU, I dont understand? Also, the memory is being undervolted by the motherboard, same as mine. OCZ performance memory runs at 1.85v and over, whereas this silly motherboard wont let it run at its basic voltage, which is the most stupid thing I have ever heard of.

I would love to... what didnt you understand from my post? I cannot, CANNOT, get my memory to run at stock speed. My memory runs SLOWER than it should do with this motherboard. I am running at 1066, when I should be running at 1333.

I get 3k+ score on 3Dmark on the Asus at lower CPU speeds. For example: -

Asus Striker II @ 3.0GHz with 1600MHz 3GB RAM under XP I get 15000

Foxconn Blackops @ 3.6GHZ with 1066MHz 4GB RAM under Vista I get 12500

Now does the performance difference add up to you? If it does, please explain how, so I can finally put this motherboard to rest. OK I am running Vista, but I have turned off all the features etc... I know I should discount around 900 points maybe, but that doesnt add up still. I just need an explanation! I am thinking its a combination of the slower memory speed and vista. Would I be right in assuming this? One thing I have noticed is that the CPU speed is around 1000 points lower on 3dmark on this board, would this be due to the memory or vista or both?

Go look around for any thread about X48 boards, OCZ RAM is not much supported. I had issues with it on my old P5E3 Premium, it ran at 1600Mhz but that was it. On my BlackOps I can run them at 1333Mhz, but no more than that. My advise, get rid of them if you can afford to get Corsair Dominators or CellShocks. I paid just over $500.00 for 2 sets of 2GB DDR3-1800 [OCZ3P18002GK], got rid of them for $400.00 even, and I do not regret selling them [even with the $100.00 loss]. The cellShocks I bought with that money [even though it was just 2GB kit] are not giving me any issue whatsoever man; I can run them at higher frequencies and tighter timings if I want with just a tiny bump on the voltage.

Go into the control panel, open Power Options, click on High Performance and you CPU will stop slowing down at idle. Mine was set to Balanced, so that will still slow it down, as well as Power Saver I would say. I had no idea Windows could throttle your CPU. I thought only the bios could do that. Thats what was driving me nuts, Live and Learn I guess.....

Memory is my biggest weak point. I am hoping someone here will help me figure out what to do so at least it will post. My biggest frustration with it right now is if I raise my DRAM voltage at all, it totally freaks out and wont post at all.

Telo - If this is true, which it seems to be so far, then I am very disappointed. OCZ is not garbage ram, they are one of the Big Boys when it comes to ram and IMHO put out a very nice product. Makes one wonder WHY would a MB nowadays not even support ram from one of the top 5 Ram companies. Just absolutely makes no sense to me at all.

i know i ran 1.7v on nb with the fan attached in a case o/ced in a demo rig that runs for a week at computex at intel booth for about 8 hrs per day for a week
have u tried cl8-8-8-25, Cmand rate 2T, perf level 9 - 10 for your 2GB x 4 and try 1.9v?

Its due to vista, i would have to say ram speed doesnt make this kinda difference in 3d mark 06 single card scores
if possible please run exact same setup on striker and same OS to see the difference

I will try... going to buy another Q6600, hopefully with a good VID rating if anyone has any for sale;) I will build another PC and create exact benchmarks between the two and post here. I will then sell on the lesser system, which will probably be this one, if current benchmarks are anything to go by:( I will also try this system on XP and see what I can get.

My thoughts exactly. I wouldnt listen to this personally. I ran the same memory @ 1600 stable on my Asus striker II Extreme.

intels very own x48 board uses a small passive alu heatsink and even at stock the chipset gets hotter than 45 celsius :P

1. cpuz doesnt read the memory voltage! thats the voltage programmed in the SPD!!!
2. your memory doesnt boot with more vdimm because the chips/pcb dont like it. thats a big problem with double sided ddr3 sticks, the pcb needs to be really good, and even then theres a lot of crosstalk and the signaling is far from perfect... as a result double sided sticks dont nearly clock as well as single sided sticks and cant run as high voltages.

i dont want to say anything bad about ocz, but there have been a lot of compatibility problems from what ive heard. thats mostly due to the 2gb sticks requiring a lot of tweaking and running way different on one board compared to another. so its not really ocs fault, they probably didnt notice that the sticks varied that much from one board to the next.

Most of the things you guys complain about are not related to the board at all and are actually something you can solve yourself spending a couple of minutes with your good ol pal :google: and doing some research.
Im really shocked by some peoples attitudes here... blame it all on the board and bash it like theres no tomorrow when the problem doesnt even have anything to do with the board.

Now the board DOES have bugs and problems like EVERY piece of hardware out there, can we please focus on the REAL problems and fixing them? Please let me know what exactly isnt working or what you need help with and ill do my best. but for the love of god, please calm down and stop bashing the board.

I have tested OCZ 1600, Corsair 1333, and cellshock 1800 in the black ops board over the last few days and the OCZ seems to have a definite issue with running over 1066 speeds, no matter of of voltages and settings.

The OCZ will not even run 1 stick at 1333.

Extra North bridge volts lets windows load a little further each time but still results in a BSOD and restart.

The cellshock RAM works with mostly stock settings, as does the Corsair.

Board is a retail black-ops, with P04 BIOS, fan cooled NB
chip is a 9770 @ stock 3.2
PSU is a coolermaster 1250
HDD is a velociraptor

I had problems with OCZ even with 790i board using stock clocks (couldn't run with settings according to it's specification) and had to RMA the memory while Crucial DDR3-2000 and Corsair DDR3-1800 worked just fine. The 790i board was not stable during hours though and I switched to BlackOps, which is rock stable.

So back to topic, if this is the right place for.
I got most recent Beta G27 today. Compared to G25/G26 I can see a little improvement of memory stability, but that counts only for the working dividers. I still run into trouble while using Auto, 1:3, 1:3,2, 1:4 (strap 200, 266 and 400). Divider of 1:2, 1:2.4, 1:2.665 and 1:4 strap 333 performing quite well.

So here is what I experienced after a full set of settings with 4 different memory kits. Memory using was Corsair XMS2-1600 CL7 2x2.048 (only kit can run at 1T), Mushkin XP3-14400 2x.1024 (with XMP-Profile), CSX Diablo-2000 2x1.024 and CSXO-CEC3-1333 2x1.024. FSB is set to 500 and thats stable of course (@Auto and 1:4 memory should run at 1.000 MHz). CPU E8500. All memory-modules have been tested to run at 1.000 MHz on a 790i (yes I know and I will not compare to it). VDimm is set to 2.044 and measured with DMM at 2.014.

So here is the first test with Diablo-2000 CL8-24-75 2T:
Divider Auto no boot, error E1
Divider 1:2 fine
Divider 1:2.4 fine
Divider 1:2.665 fine
Divider 1:3 BIOS-Boot shows only 1 Core out of 2
Divider 1:3.2 no boot, error E1
Divider 1:4 strap 200 no boot, error C1
Divider 1:4 strap 266 no boot, error E1
Divider 1:4 strap 333 fine and primestable for 45 minutes b4 I skipped testing
Divider 1:4 strap 400 no boot, error C5

Next Test Mushkin XP3-14400 CL8-24-75 2T (XMP-Profile):

So what I am asking is if you guys can confirm that especially the 1:3x dividers not working as they should. I think they are pretty important to close the gap between 1:2x and 1:4. Im neither pissed nor upset, the blackops is just great (which other x48 except the evo delivers such big fsb) and even the memory-performance increased alot. But I am unhappy with the dividers. As you can see, there is a difference between memory running at 2T (cannot boot at Auto and strap 400) and the Corsair-Kit, which is able to run at 1T (boots at Auto and strap 400), also. And no, I did not tweak any memory settings in the test (I usually do, when pushing the memory clock beyond 1.000 and thats working well, but divider-problem remains. The blackops here is a media sample with factory testreport included ;)

Any help is much appreciated.

you need to lower latency of memory trhe smaller dividers, like CL5 or CL6 performance level 8,9,10

like run 580fsb with 1:2.66 or 1:2.4 , CL5-6-6-18-perf level 9-10, or cl5-5-5-18

Ummm, I think you need to read the comment again. Also, if you work for foxconn, I hope you arent an actual official representative, as even the most down on their luck coffee fetchers will tell you, THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.

OK I respect that you are defending your board, but bashing US, the people that pay your wages, is not the way to go my friend. Also, why should OCZ send you free memory, is your company THAT cheap that they cant afford one set of OCZ ram? I mean, what on earth am I doing buying your motherboard... i have images of you lot creating this thing in your grandparents living room or garden shed.

I suggest you go away, buy some RAM and get testing. Simple as that really... I dont like the attitude, and I hope you are not an official representative of foxconn.

I took faith in your board, now its about time you stop blaming other companies and your customers and get testing and put a little faith in the people who are helping you out, doing your job for you, and telling you whats wrong. As I said, I know you are protecting your board, but there is a time and a place to do that, and that time and place is NOT here and it definitely shouldnt be from you, if your post is anything to go by.

I agree, I am a little upset and I may have gone about it in the wrong way, but I want answers and results... now I hear you complain about US complaining and telling me that you havent tested the board with OCZ RAM... COME ON, thats beyond contempt.

The reason was that I couldnt get over 3ghz with the Asus. However, I dont care about that now as I am getting 10x better results with the Asus at a much lower clock speed. Asus 1 Foxconn 0.

thanks for the info on the G27 release, but still a no go on OCZ memory:( I guees it comes as no surprise seeing as though saaya has just admitted that foxconn does not test with OCZ memory and wont do until someone GIVES them free stuff.

Hey is anyone else using the Crucial Ballistix DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)? Anytime I try to run a OC windows will load I run MemTest and get errors within seconds.. I thought I read somewhere this board was having problems with memory with XMP profile? Thinking of trying another memory set. How is the G Skill on this board? Thanks...

I am sorry, but it is not a board, it is you ... and / or components, which have been chosen by you.
I am running my Foxconn rock stable not at 3GHz, but at 4.3 GHz ...
Asus Striker Extreme II is a nice board as well if it runs stable, but it uses 790i chipset, which I don't think is 100% reliable ATM.

And BTW OCZ memory is not on a list of recommended memory for 790i chipset (at least on EVGA website), why should it be recommended / tested for BlackOps?
