BrotherEsau: Saw you need a description of CPU-NB Vlotage (should be Voltage of course). That is the voltage for the cpu's north bridge. Due to the split power plane design this gets handled separated now.
With my 9600BE ~1.3V was good up to 2.1GHz NB speed. For stock (1.8GHz) 1.1V was a save value, min possible was ~1.0625V.
You can use AMD Power Monitor to check what NB VID is actualy used.
@oese: umm yeah, the unlocked multi is an argument. :)
Achim what's the maximum voltage you've tried? Given it 1.55v (limit) yet?
Tried 1.5V (bios) max, temps go up rapid with those voltages so I'd need better cooling for testing first.Quote:

Well I feel better now, finally got my board back from DFI (took them the whole 10 days and no communication, never even let me know they got it in the first place :rolleyes:) and I just got set back up, bumped my multi from 11.5 default to 12 and set full default ram speed and voila, booted into windows.
Thing is, I may be selling them all off because my car spun a rod bearing and I need a new engine now :(
you need a crank grind and new bearings, this can usually be done without even removing the engine if you go to a good shop ;)

Mem is rated for 2.2V at those timings and i used ~2.12V with the 9600BE all the times. I'm unsure if this low consumption has todo with the new b3 stepping because i never tried below 2.12V with an B2.

I said yesterday that AMD power monitor can be used to monitor NB voltages. That is not true! It works only if you tweak the p-states and switch to them manual or via cnq. Normaly AMD power monitor reads the vid's from the msr registers, but those are not used on the DFI board and they always show the stock vid's the cpu is rated for.

Brother Esau I'm interested to know how well the 6-phase digital PWM handles overclocking the mighty 125watt 9850BE. If you haven't heard, cheaper motherboards with 3 to 5 phase PWMs blow their MOSFETS with these 125w CPUs. If the 6-phase on this board can't get the CPU to 3.2Ghz (which it will do on air with the stock cooler @1.4v) then I need to consider an 8-Phase ASUS or Gigabyte (both have crappy bioses though).

EDIT: From the looks of the 6400+ overclocking, it seems this board is more than capable, but I don't see any validation with the 9850BE to put my mind at ease. I'm pretty sure it can handle it but just wanted to get your go ahead with my little project. BTW, this is my first post. The board you are thinking of at Anandtech I believe is the Gigayte 780G that is blowing the Mosefts...pretty sure about that one.
LOL, no, none of the 790FX boards have a problem or blow up with Phenoms, but 3-phase cheaper 780G designs with 125W mainly or 3+1 phase if you don't cool the PWM area or top the 160W CPU boundaries - then very possible. Nothing above 3+1 phase has a problem that we know of.Quote:

The DFI has no problem with these wattages nor does any other 790FX board that I know of.
1.4v 3.2G? That has nothing to do with board if you have a decent board, that's good, but don't expect it unless you get a good oc chip. Mine and Achims won't do that. Mine will not even POST at 1.4v 3.2G, let alone stable.

Is it critical that I pair that motherboard with DDR2 from the compatibility list on DFI's site? I want a 2x2GB kit because I may get another 4GB sooner than later. The 1066 on DFI's site are all 2x1GB kits. How sensitive is this motherboard to memory? Also, does this board have a problem with all 4 memory slots being filled?
Let me ask though, do the power management chips gets very hot to the touch? I wonder if they could benefit from an added heatsink for extra cooling.
After reading that, I think I'll wait for you to flesh out a good build with 2x2GB 1066. When you have things settled I'll build according to your recommendation. I really appreciate you doing this for the AMD community. I usually go my own way and do the trial and error bit myself but I want to get it done right the first time. The "TeamGroup" ram might have Micron integrated circuit chips and the G.Skill might have Powerchip integrated circuit chips. If that is true you might want to consider the TeamGroup ram. (Nobody is totally sure on the G.Skill brand of chip because the PC-8000 speed has the powerchip 6-layer PCB and the PC-8500 has an 8-layer PCB and nobody has verified what chip it is... but it is probably powerchip. Knowing what I know TODAY I would probably order the TeamGroup ram if I placed my order today.)
From what I have read the Micron ram seems to overclock better... but takes more voltage and runs hotter. The current powerchip IC take less voltage and run cooler but some people might have problems.
I might RMA the G.Skill and order some of the Teamgroup ram if G.Skill works poorly. (BTW: When I hit the "buy" button on Newegg the TeamGroup ram was $20.00 more than the G.Skill and I had no reason to believe it was any better.)

If you have an intel mobo thats about as helpful as it gets. They tell you all the BIOS settings you need to use. I hope some of that can translate to Phenom IMC performance and stability.

How stable is it?
Well, didn't run any stress test, but is much better now, all my previous MSI/ASUS tests/bench's was done with an LC-Power 480W Scorpio PSU, did fine, stable 2800 in both boards, when changed to DFI had problems running 2750, was Prime stable, but random BSOD's.
Today I changed to an LC-Power 850W Arkangel the one in my Sig, i could boot 2800 255HTT/x9HT/x9NB, no random BSOD's did some benchs, all seams OK, will do some Prime later.
I know..., but I don't want to miss some fun with the 9850, and my oldest son will have some fun with 9500 too.;)
vdimm isn't processed via the IMC on any of the A64s, the timings are handled but the memory is powered directly, just like any other platform. Can you prove the vdimm power being supplied is directed thought he IMC on the X2 and/or Phenom
@aGeoM ...How old are you man you my age or older? I don't have any kids myself but I'm guessing with a statement I'll give it to my Oldest son I am sure your not a kid yourself obviously:)

Took that screenshot after half a minute and stopped prime cuz i had auto power off set to 80°C.
I have the monitoring software for the psu running on a laptop and noticed up to 375W DC system power consumption. Max used at 12V1 was ~11A at 12V2 ~12.2A. Should be save for those rails handling up to 18A. :shrug:

Primed 1.30625/1.26875/2.0V for 2.8GHZ CPU/2.2GHZ NB/1066-5-5-5-16-18 MEM for +8hrs, ran a few apps afterwards and it seems stable.
Trying 1.2875/1.25/2.0 now. Had all the SB and NB chipset voltages at lowest first upped em all in the 1.2V region to be save.

@aGeom: :Yepp: might be worth trying another psu anyway, the DFI requires more power than other boards. Can't compete with your 3DMark06 result here with an HD2600XT.

Yep, your board is using 8-pin 12V connector (black), with that PSU, first 4-pin is 12V1 and the +4-pin is 12V2 ;)
The MB connector as well as most peripherals are 12V4/5V/3.3V.
12V3 is PCIe 6-pin.
2.8/2.2GHz will give the best power efficiency i expect. Priming that at 1.2875/1.25V. It failed at 1.3V on the first day I hadt this cpu but i had used 4-5-5-16-18 timings and lower chipset voltages that time.Quote:

Are the CPUs dying or are the motherboards burning? I find it hard to believe the Phenom can get burnt up so fast unless something totally improper was going on. AMD's 65nm process tech is actually very good, only the complex CPU design holds them back compared to Intels@65nm (monolithic quad ftw/l!).Quote:

had to add little voltage to get 3,5ghz stable, got freezes at 1,4v... and unfortunately 3,6ghz won't boot into windows even at 1,55v.. i'll try other bios and lower multi/lower ram divisor/higher htt perhaps there's some little peculiarity somewhere here..
bit the cpu seems to be running really cool.. i got 39/44°C core temps and only 60°C cpu temp (the 4600+ was at 92°C at 3,5ghz :lol2: )
Oli I had that CPU @3.5GHZ on stock voltage you don't need 1.40Vcore!

which core temps did you have??
you experienced some preferences of the cpu? perhaps its the 4gb ram again that it needs a little more voltage...
edit: ok i flashed 03/12 and set ram timings to default except trfc and it seems to run better @ stock @ 3,5ghz.. will have to wait for prime..

Brother Esau, have you considered water cooling or a TEC cooler for your Phenom yet? For that matter, have or do any of you run one of those cooling setups?
mmh i dont think its the psu, i get a 12,24v at idle and 12,15v at 3dmark load... that should not be that problem..
now priming at 3,5ghz 1,456v, perhaps its really because of the 4gb set.. i'll test with one kit tomorrow..

Serious question. How many of you have issues entering bios with a phenom even when you are 100% stable?
I have an issue here with my M2R that seems Phenom related, im going to make sure with the 6400+ again also and I have an RMA authorized but I have seen others having the same problem.
Boots fine, hit delete, board starts to enter bios, hangs with blue bar and flashing cursor...hit reset, same again, hit reset, same again, hit reset..hit delete just after the sata drives have loaded on the splash screen and boom into bios.
anyone else seeing this, is there a work aaround?\

tony which bios release are you talking about exactly? I did not encounter that with my x2's..
@ be: look at my last prime run last night, it seems stable with that rather high vcore.. currently trying to manage getting it stable at stock with 01/30 bios..
but i think it was a little too much as5... got about 3°C lower now, perhaps that will be the solution..

This is after a few hours of running Prime95 on and off and messing around with other things.
THE STORY OF THE BUILD:
G.Skill 8500C5 2x2Gb:
When I first booted I had put the ram into slots #1 and #2... and it wouldn't go past the C1 on the readout, scaring the crud out of me. So I switched to slots #3 and #4 and it booted okay at 800. <phew> Then I realized that I needed to use #1 & #3 OR #2  for the ram to be dual mode; it is completely different than my old motherboard. So I used #1 and #3. No problems... again at 800. I went in and set the ram to 2.1 Volts (as the G.Skill rep says to do on these forums.) and manually told it to go to 1066 left everything on AUTO on the timing page. It booted 1066, ganged, 2T, but at 5-7-7-20-41. So I then manually input 5-5-5-20-41 and that worked find. (I also messed with unganged.)
SOME OVERCLOCK
Then I increased the multipler on the CPU to 15.00 and that worked okay but gave a Prime95 error after about an hour. I didn't want to increase the CPU voltage so I backed it to 2.9Ghz. Preparing for an all night burn-in test.
TESTING & TEMPERATURES:
Anyway... priming away. I will go all night at 2.9Ghz and see how that works. My CPU temps are 58-73 at load depending on whether I run the CPU fan at full blast or the slowest speed. (I have a four knob Thermaltake fan control system with multi-colored LED. Blue/Green/Red. Can you say OOOOHHH? It was a splurge purchase when I was on vacation in Vegas. We don't have big giant computer stores here.)
The GPU temp went up because while the PRIME95 was using 100% of the 4 CPU cores I also ran NVidia Cascades on my other monitor. (I wanted to test hte case cooling since everything moved around a LOT inside the case.) The vid temp never appears to go above about 58C at load. VERY good for a 8800GTS. The Thermalright HR-03Plus is GREAT.
CRAZINESS
The only thing "crazy" now is the temperature of the mainboard. The sensors seem to be off because it is NOT that hot to the touch. I have not mounted the TRANSPIPE thing yet but I can't see that really lowering that temperature that much. (I'll mount that up after I verify all is going well.)
BIOS
The board came with the 12/11/2007 bios and I flashed to 3/07/2008. No real difference that I could notice other than they moved things around a bit.
NOTE: I haven't reloaded windows yet. I just plugged in my hardware raid card and ran what was loaded. (You gotta love that.)
CONCLUSION
I'm a happy puppy. Tomorrow I'll mess with voltages and see how high it can go. (I'll probably go back down to stock or just above when I'm done playing around.) Time for bed... it's 2:30 and I gotta get up in a few hours. <grin>
(And I think the G.Skill 8500 memory worked just fine. I might grab two mores sticks soon. Not because I need them today... but because I'd rather have matching RAM a year or so down the road when I might need them. Oh and SIDE BENEFIT: This motherboard gives you about 3.3 MB of ram when you have 4Gb. My old only gave 3.0. But I'll load Vista64 tomorrow probably.)

around 1.375V CPU and 1.375V NB is where the CPU here starts to take off, much more ont he NB does not help, CPU core at 1.475 looks to get me 3.4GHZ. Note that i was setting less on the DQ6 but I have a feeling the droop was less also.
small update.. stock vcore now seems stable :up:

Normally I would have let Prime95 run at STOCK all night... but I got excited and wanted to see more. So tonight I'll run it at stock all night to make sure I'm 100% good at stock. Maybe I'll run the Sandra benchmark WHILE the Prime95 runs on 3 cores. Won't give me good readings.. but it WILL stress things.
I might also try 1.375 volts to see if that helps it "take off" as Tony mentions. It doesn't seem to go over about 62C with the CPU turned on MAX for the Zalman 9700.

12/11/07 Official is actually a Beta Bios and quite Horrible :rolleyes: You will be much better off with Current 3/7/2008 Official except Temps are quite high on Read out in both Bios and SG ....I guess a Bug who knows.
I will be getting my 2x2gb OCZ Reaper HPC (PC2-8500) 2day will see what that brings with shipping SPD

They booted fine with the 12/11/07 bios AND also the 3/7/2008 bios. As I mentioned there was the problem using marked slots #1 and #2... and getting a stop at the C1 on the readout which made me panic for a bit. (Since that was the problem seen before.) But switching slots fixed that problem. Or maybe it just needed a few minutes with the juice turned on. Need to fill all those pipes with electricity you know.
yeah campbell seems like somewhere there is the wall for that chip. I think 3,5ghz at stock is quite nice and that seems to run really well, but i don't get it into windows even with 1,6v @ 3,6ghz.. perhaps one cold night i will take that thing out onto the balkony and do some benchies at 5°C water :D
4GB may be the Issue try a 2gb kit:)
These clocks @ 1.43-1.44 real:D Low voltage is received better on that chip then High Voltage so take your time and be patient ;)
P.S.........Stick with 11/22/2007 Official by far the best Bios for Dual core! Although I really enjoyed the 3/12/08 Beta Release but I never Pushed on it as I was primarily looking for stability and presence of bugs or inadequacies in the Bios compared to 11/22/07
Doubt you are interested but I will be selling My OCZ FLEX (PC2-9200) wich work exceptionally well with the DFI 790FX and P35 for that metter with very low voltage and have been ca5red for very well and never High or excessive voltage thrown on them ...Ever!
